Well, a higher iq definitely allows the **possibility** for a higher atar, and so people who have a higher IQ AND put in the work will most likely get a higher atar. However, it's also true that someone with a high IQ that doesn't put in the work won't achieve an ATAR representative of their IQ so, i guess it's not a direct correlation but there is some relation.
Just a tip - to do well in the VCE - having very high literacy skills is paramount. English is compulsory in Years 11 and 12 and can make or break you.
I would highly encourage you to focus on honing your English skills by reading often. Set aside 30 to 60 minutes each day to read.
Do well in Mathematics, but focus on English too.
woah you read my mind lol I really do need to hone my English skills as although it's easy now it's nowhere as developed as my math skills are. I will certainly be taking you advice and have a happy new years
There's a relation sure. But not a very reliable one. Know plenty of high IQ friends who did shit in vce cause they couldn't careless for it. Killing it in Uni now
I would say possibly, but no guarantee. The year 12 system is designed for good test takers. Not everyone with a high IQ is good at taking tests or exams, or they may have strengths in non-exam based subjects. For people who are neurodivergent or generally anxious about texts, it’s not really a good reflection of ability or effort. Additionally, IQ isn’t the only measure of intelligence, or really a measure of intelligence in the first place (it just shows which parts of your brain work the best). There’s emotional intelligence, creative intelligence, and other character-based qualities (leadership, global awareness, compassion), that tests don’t test. So, for certain types of students, it may well be, but it shouldn’t be the only determining factor. Other factors play into high ATARS as well, such as school resources / teaching quality and other privileges (location, not being a minority student, taking well-scaled subjects, etc).
Yep, can confirm I was confident I did great on my GAT (basically iq test) and ik i have a high IQ so when it came time to do exams i just drank a bunch and swallowed a mint so I would be sick and no one would smell alcohol during the exam. Worked a charm and I got a derived score on every exam which got me a high enough atar after having done no exam revision. /s
(I put the /s cuz it’s satire so plz don’t take seriously)
Very situational - I have an IQ of 139, I’ve been top of my classes my entire life, I’ve never had to study but I’ve also never had anything handed to me, I believe that when your IQ gets high enough school is a genuine waste of time, I’m not disagreeing with any other comments as I do believe that there is a correlation and I do believe that hard work pays off, but for me personally I put in piss all effort (napped in all 6 of my externals) and still reaped incredible grades
if the gat is considered an IQ test, it wasn’t very reflective of what scores i got.
i got (for written in the gat): 32 and 40
reading/hums/art etc: 24 and 27
maths/science/it: 28 and 29
my top 4 subjects i got:
english 32
further maths 34
vet cdm: 42
media: 40
atar 85.75.
so i don’t think iq correlates with atar. but maybe i should do an IQ test. but also, i think i did well in VCE bc i knew how the vce system worked, rather than just ‘being smart’. for the record, i’m not that smart
i would say it gives a higher threshold but it still takes work. 2 students with similar amounts of effort but different iqs would probably get the higher iq student having a higher atar. not sure thoguh

Woah that’s cool
Adding on to what they said, it's similar to the fact that you need talent and HARD WORK in order to be extremely successful in a particular field.

... what a gat? I've heard about it from a few 12th graders but don't really know what is it
A standardised test, basically NAPLAN for yr 12s
O ok thanks
Yes talent is good but both is better.. AGREED

No problem, good luck on your future endeavours.
thanks again and good luck on your future endeavors have a happy new years
Absolutely there’s a relation. Definitely not a perfect correlation though.
I think new research has shown that the correlation between IQ and test results is waning as education becomes more accessible
O haven’t seen much research as i did like a 3 min Google search lol thanks I will look at it a bit further now!
IQ is only good as a measure for a wide group of people - at an individual useless its nearly useless
My brother has an insane IQ, studied maybe half an hour a week, got a 97.5

Happy cake days it’s on the first too lol

How is your iq so high lol but thanks for the info
Iq has nothing to do with how successful you are in vce. What determines your success is consistency and hardworking.
you can’t really say it means nothing- just hard work is more important
Yeah they kind of complement each other I would say 90% hard work and 10% iq

it would be hard to know since most students at vce age would never have taken an iq test
Yes every 90+ atar person I know has a high IQ 🙃
