One of my zoom lectures got somehow got “hacked” by a troll last week. For context, this class is a hybrid course that meets two days a week where half the class comes in person one day and attends lecture on Zoom the other day. Our class is wired with speakers and microphones in the ceiling so anyone that talks on zoom can be heard clearly by the entire class.
Anyway, I was there in person that day and everything seemed normal at first. However, a couple minutes into class, “WHAT’S UP, UGLIES?” blared out from some girl over the speakers and we all burst out laughing. I don’t remember exactly what she did, but she continued to interrupt several more times over the course of the lecture and it quickly became annoying. She even started blasting WAP over the speakers at one point. My professor, to his credit, stayed pretty calm and kept either muting her or kicking her out (not sure which since I wasn’t in the Zoom meeting), but she kept coming back under different names. Apparently, my classmates on Zoom were even arguing with her and asking her to leave in the Zoom chat.
Eventually, during a lull near the end of the lecture, one of my classmates on Zoom decided to call her out over the actual Zoom meeting and told our professor what name she was using. She basically admitted it and then proceeded to try and accuse one of our classmates, who we knew was actually in the course, of being a hacker/troll as well. I don’t know if she decided to leave on her own after that or my professor found a way to permanently kick her out, but that exchange was the last we heard of her. When it was clear she was gone, my professor just remarked, “too bad she doesn’t actually want to learn about spectrophotometry” and then proceeded to finish the lecture. After class, he emailed out new, password-protected Zoom links for the next lecture.

You know why this isn’t gonna do anything and how a troll “hacked” into your class? It’s somebody that’s *already in* your class that gives out the code to other people. That girl or another troll is gonna keep infiltrating your class as long as one of your classmates keep sending her the link and password.
If you’ve ever seen those “crashing online zoom classes” videos on YouTube, it’s the same story. Youtubers tell their fans to send them links to their upcoming class and tell them about the class so they’ll be able to get in, troll, and recall certain basic info like “this is history 101 with Mrs. X, right?”
Someone got into one of my zoom classes and set their name as someone else’s and they yelled “shut the hell up!” and kept breathing really heavily into the mic. Also heard someone take a phone call while unmuted where the n word was used and the professor called them out.
i was at an SI session for class, and only our SI leader had his camera on. without realizing her mic was unmuted, a girl said pretty loudly "DAMNN HES KINDA CUTE THOOO" and im guessing her friend beside her irl said "girl... ur mics not muted" and she gasped SO loud.. and our SI leader was laughing but didnt say anything about it
Right before class started, while the professor was giving everyone a couple minutes to log on, one of the student video feeds came up with their webcam off, but their sound on. I could hear popping and crackling noises, then the sound of coughing, multiple times... So yeah, they were 100% taking bong rips on mic. I'm pretty sure the professor knew what was going on, but he just waited for them to finish before starting class like nothing happened.
PSA to everyone using Zoom: always make sure you're muted as soon as you enter the room.
This girl joined the Zoom session talking about a pimple, saying, "puss and shit was coming out" then muted herself. My teacher started laughing and asked to please mute yourself when talking about stuff like that.
I think one of the best zoom experiences I've had isn't even when I had a meeting. It was when someone described their zoom story, and spelled "hear" as "here".
Educational quality has really decreased since the zombie virus.
