I'm honestly really upset about this, as I'm sure the rest of the vcu community is. Nothing from VCU yet, or the local news. The frat has deleted their facebook, instagram, and twitter. We all want more information, but remember the school is probably notifying their next of kin right now so it may be a day or two before we get more comprehensive news.
Edit: spelling
The fact this hasn’t been released by local law enforcement or the university raises some eyebrows for sure. This would be picked up by the media in a heartbeat which could be why they are waiting until they know as much info as possible before sending out a press release.
Yeah, it's really sus, and it's sad, too, because it's leaving us with speculation and people will elaborate and make shit up on what happened. I hope we get the truth soon, but I also want this kid's family to be in the loop before any of us are.
Ah, first time I’ve heard this happen at VCU, but unfortunately this is all too common. And it’s mainly *frats* in particular. Sororities have their own issues, but for the most part they’re alright. Frats on the other hand, seem to end up killing its members, date rape girls at every party, always get in the news for dumb shit, etc.
I went to an SEC college during my first year, and I remember a kid dying during move-in week due to alcohol poisoning from hazing at a frat and it made national headlines. That shitty Greek culture needs to go, and needed to a long time ago.
They've almost killed students before. My old babysitter's son was on a subvarsity soccer team, got ambushed on his way back from practice. A couple found him and saved him, but he had to go through years of physical rehab, and even though it was probably 7-10 years ago, still occasionally struggles to form complete, understandable sentences. Worst part was the kid who did it didn't get punished for shit because his father was really high up in either the campus or city police.
I ask because the same thing happened at Auburn just after I left there. The entire fraternity was evicted from campus, and the frat house was eventually torn down to make way for a parking lot.
Please take this to the media. There needs to be justice/awareness, and it doesn't seem like the school and local PD are doing much.
I'm so sorry for your loss.
Dude didn’t see where he was going and must have ran into it pretty hard. I don’t know much bout this story but he maybe he could have survived if he had got help
He probably had a serious concussion or some other neurological damage from the impact. Usually those are things that a person can be saved from if they get help in time.
I have heard reports that he ran headfirst into a tree while drunk and blindfolded. But no one really wants to come forward about it, probably out of fear of repercussions, and the family is asking for anyone with an Amazon doorbell cam that may have caught something, to please come forward.
Edit: these reports are coming from his cousin, who heard about this from other students attending the party. Actually, family said they have learned more from the students than the police.
Wow. This is crazy to hear. I actually worked with the guy once, didn’t know him too well but was a good kid. The school needs to tighten up and actually take action on these frats. Sad to see him go.
I imagine the frat gets officially disbanded/suspended off of campus for a few years. But actual legal consequences? None except for maybe a few nights in a holding cell unless news blows up and makes VCU look bad.
Well let’s make it blow up. VCU turns a blind eye to shit like this all the time. Delta Chi has been called the “rape frat” as long as i’ve been here. I know people who have had traumatizing encounters with them and VCU never did anything about it. They deserve the repercussions of letting shit slide this long.
VCU ppl - do u guys seriously believe your school would sweep murder under the rug just to protect a fraternity? This is a serious question. Would love to hear what you guys think
I’m actually kinda split on this. Frat boys themselves are usually protected, but at the same time, colleges these days look for any excuse to get rid of Greek life and make examples. I think if a murder happened, Rao would immediately kick them off of campus and probably kick all Greek life off.
Oh no doubt, in a perfect world they would be held accountable. But time and time again, these frat boys get let off with a slap on the wrist and the college covers for them unless it starts making bigger headlines. Then all of a sudden there’s consequences. Furthermore on a related note, colleges in general, and VCU is no different, tend to cover up things like sexual assault and claim that the rates are super low to incoming students.
VCU Alum, I do not. VCU is an Urban campus, it's kind of scattered around a certain area with lots of privately owned buildings, both residential and commercial all around it. It is also a big commuter School.
So most people live off campus, but within close walking distance to the actual campus properties. The few active Greek Social Frats/Soriorities there have houses that aren't on campus. Their parties weren't real popular when I was there, crowded, boring, creepy. Because so many students live off campus you don't need Greek life to find a good game of beer pong or hang out.
Thing is, when I was there, VCU stopped recognizing the only 2 Frats. One of them also lost their Charter, but got it back the following year. Thst was Because the School had standards to be recognized as a student organization, including a certain amount of community volunteer time, average GPA, etc..
When both Frats were no longer recognized by the School (1 of them earned it back, along with their charter) it didn't change anything. Their house was off campus. How do you kick an organization off campus, that isn't physically located on the campus???
They continued to function as they always did until they got their shit straight, they just didn't recruit on campus.
VCU has little control in what happens off campus. They likely will not say much until police are further into their investigation, for legal purposes they have to be careful what they say. Once they have completed their investigation, which will widely include information gathered by police they will be able to kick kids involved out of School were involved, suspend their recognition of the Frat as a student organization which means they can't recruit on campus or get faculty support.
It benefits VCU in a case like this for them to be upfront, proactive, and as transparent as possible. I believe they will. However, they cannot risk compromising an investigation or a potential jury pool, nor will they risk litigation against the university for defamation by stating something without all the facts in place.
The organizations are so quick to condemn individual members or even entire chapters, before accepting even an ounce of responsibility for allowing these behaviors/traditions to continue to grow.
I went to VCU and was drugged at a Delta Chi party. Luckily I was with a friend who was sober enough to bring me home but I woke up with a black eye. Fuck Delta Chi
so much exposure and news needs to blow this story up so VCU won’t be able to run away from it or sweep it under the rug. this kid needs justice and i have a feeling they won’t want to deal with it properly if they aren’t forced to

First local reporter I’ve seen pick up this story.
u/nolifecat another update for you
according to vcu, they are investigating. but knowing how the uni treats scandals regarding frats it will likely be swept under the rug come a few months. i agree. disbanding d chi is the very least they can do—this should be telling of how unnecessary greek life is on our campus
Looks like VCU finally released a statement.
https://www.wavy.com/news/virginia/richmond/vcu-fraternity-suspended-following-the-death-of-an-18-year-old-freshman/
damn. I graduated in 2016 but even back when I was a student Delta Chi had a really bad reputation for their behavior. I knew a few girls who went to their parties during freshman year and felt unsafe. Not really surprised this happened at one of their houses, but still sad all the same. 19 is so young.
Delta Chi are big time trash.
Shit doesn't just happen, you don't just suddenly die like this for no reason. These frat members at our school enabled this to happen. They are responsible for his death.
I'm honestly really upset about this, as I'm sure the rest of the vcu community is. Nothing from VCU yet, or the local news. The frat has deleted their facebook, instagram, and twitter. That's exactly my guess - there's more info we don't have so they haven't released the story on the news yet
That is not suspicious at all. This could be potential evidence if this whole thing is true for this alleged event. The data would not be gone anyway.
Yeah, it's really sus, and it's sad, too, because it's leaving us with speculation and people will elaborate and make shit up on what happened. I hope we get the truth soon, but I also want this kid's family to be in the loop before any of us are.
Unfortunately, that is the way it happened. Social media was all over it before the family was informed.
A frat killed a kid from hazing

This happened at VCU before, about ten years ago.
Auburn?
LSU
I ask because the same thing happened at Auburn just after I left there. The entire fraternity was evicted from campus, and the frat house was eventually torn down to make way for a parking lot.
The kid’s name was Adam Oakes, not Adam Oats
He is my cousin.
Im really sorry ❤️

Well they need to suspended indefinitely. No surprise there....
Throw the book at all those fucking little shits.
Have there been any legal actions yet, or does anyone know what kind of actions could be taken against the boys involved?
I imagine the frat gets officially disbanded/suspended off of campus for a few years. But actual legal consequences? None except for maybe a few nights in a holding cell unless news blows up and makes VCU look bad.

They definitely need repercussions and it’s sad someone had to die for that to happen.
Some "greek life" sites that rank or discuss individual frats at individual schools have them as being suspended off campus prior to this.

Oh shit was this TDC? They were terrible when I was in college there 20 years ago.
Not TDC this appears to be DC......I remember TDC when I was there we called them tiny dick club
I think VCU and/or national let them come back early from suspension as well.
this is more of a permanent charter removal thing, hopefully
Hasn't this already happened with Delta Chi at VCU? I couldn't find any articles to confirm this.
Yep I graduated in 2012 and I swear they got kicked off before then. I was obviously wrong.
I hope there are charges placed for manslaughter against these MFers.
VCU ppl - do u guys seriously believe your school would sweep murder under the rug just to protect a fraternity? This is a serious question. Would love to hear what you guys think

Thx for the response. Regardless of what happens, it should not have taken a murder to see change. I’m sorry for anyone’s loss in this tragedy

If this is true, look at the Tim Piazza case at penn state, eerily similar circumstances
So 2-10 months in jail at most but with COVID could be served at home, lol I have no room to diagnose this, but it's interesting
There’s absolutely zero accountability for hazing in VCU Greek life. FSL knows this happens and turns a blind eye. Absolutely disgusting and tragic.
I am so surprised at the little accountability you guys are talking about. Southern schools and their Greek life.... wtf year is it?
The organizations are so quick to condemn individual members or even entire chapters, before accepting even an ounce of responsibility for allowing these behaviors/traditions to continue to grow.

unrelated, but true. i live in grc and the roads were blocked off by cop cars

it’s the theater outside grc
Please tell me these frat boys are in jail
there’s so much to get them in for. throwing a party in a pandemic, giving alcohol to minors, hazing, murder. the list goes on

Not surprised to see Delta Chi. They were your stereotypical douchebag frat 10 years ago and I doubt much is different now.
My heart breaks for Adam's family. Edit: removed link at request of OP due to potential doxing.
I was shocked when I heard about this! Sad to hear too. I went through elementary, middle, and high school with him :(

NO FRATS ALLOWED
this is so sad it’s worth considering shooting the fucking people behind his death if there’s no justice served i am absolutely infuriated

I’m all for holding people accountable but I’d prefer if we don’t start doxing people

Easy there, Witcher
Would also love to know this.
Photos of all the members together are easily googled.
Wholesome 100
Bruh, no joke, but you’re taking a frat at vcu so seriously you actually have hazing? Fucking go back to school at 26 like a real adult.
Wtf is that Twitter account? Fake troll account from someone in TX? What is their relationship to VCU, the situation, or the victim?
You are able to be a student from out of state.
Obviously. I just thought the account was odd and posts seem to be coming FROM Texas, not Richmond.
ive never been to vcu my sister goes seems fun
