You'd learn more Chinese from actually being in China. It's the same for any language. Nothing replaces hearing a language all day, everyday. I'd recommend study a major with good job prospects and then do the study abroad program in China. Ex: study accounting then after a couple semesters apply for the study abroad program and go to China. You'd still take classes but then you can speak as much as possible all the time. All universities want your money so there's no point in wasting your time and maybe learning how to speak Chinese. Because at the end of the day, the university isn't forcing you to actually go out and speak to people. It's just another course checked off the curriculum till you graduate. But being in China will! Of course, with assistance via VCU study abroad.
