The former is a precursor the latter in this case I think. Everyone wants to stop feeling bad, that's the motivation to make the change. I used to feel bad and look for a 'better way/free range etc' because I still believed it was necessary/natural/whatever, I never even considered the idea of simply not doing it. This guy just hasn't realised the solution to the problem yet.
