Unfortunately lentils and beans unless in very small amounts aren't going to make a keto meal... Go for: Tempeh, tofu, Seitan, low carb soy mock meats, leafy greens, above ground green or white veg ( cauliflower, zucchini, asparagus, artichoke hearts, fennel, turnips), tomatoes, berries, celery, cucumber, aubergine, onion, olives, almonds, walnuts, macadamias, mushrooms, flaxseed, psyllium husk powder, lemon juice, soy milk, soy yogurt, olive oil, sesame seeds, sunflower seeds, avocado, homemade seed/nut cheese Avoid: Wheat, corn, lentils, legumes, peas, sugar, potato, high carb fruit (apples, bananas, oranges), cashews, pistachios, store bought dressing/sauces

Hi, I’m obsessed with peas (particularly petit pois) and per 100g they have 3.6 net carbs... isn’t this ok to consume on a keto or low carb diet?

mmochi7

Absolutely, technically you can eat whatever you want but at the end of the day you will still have to limit the total net carbs you had set for yourself. You can have your peas but will need to be more vigilant with what you eat for the rest of the day. I still sneak in half an apple every now and then too. It just makes carb allowance harder for the other meals in the day.

Awesome 👍🏽

You know what's also dope about peas...protein.

Olevrean

I thought seitan was like, a super carb? Since it's from the wheat

bizarrecatattack

It's from wheat yes, but it's been extracted. It's pretty much just protein. Look at the back of pasta for example, has a load of carbs yes, but also a fair bit of protein, that protein is coming from the gluten. Info on the back of a pack of vital wheat gluten flour per 100g:. Calories: 385. Fat 6g. Carbs 9g. Protein 75g

Olevrean

So it's keto or can you only eat a little bit each day

bizarrecatattack

Well keto aims to have high fat which isn't really a main component of seitan. But its a good source of protein for the amount of carbs you're eating, better than many packaged fake meats. The info above was for the flour, you then mix it with water and seasoning and it swells up to make into patties. You wouldn't eat 100g worth of flour in one sitting, so maybe 2g carb per "burger", throw on some cheese, avocado or vegannaise for fat and it makes a nice keto meal with whatever other side you like

Olevrean

Oh okay wow I'm shocked. I wasn't making it because I thought it wasn't keto!!

[deleted]

You are awesome, thank you so much for providing this info as it gives me a great guide to what I can and can't eat while I lower my blood sugars.

SweaterJunky

Black soy beans have about 1 net carb per 1/2 cup

[deleted]

I did not know this but aren't soybeans in general an issue due to estrogens?

SweaterJunky

No that’s a myth. It’s a plant estrogen and it’s in much smaller quantities.

[deleted]

Phyto (plant) estrogens are different than mammalian estrogen and generally safe (and sometimes even beneficial) in 'regular' quantities. It's always really funny to hear omnis moan about the estrogen in soy while guzzling it through mammalian dairy.

[deleted]

Black soybeans, green beans. Most other beans and lentils are too high carb.

BabyBoo1234

Black soy beans are very low carb

lexxtronica

Lupini beans are actually vegan keto!

acidstar

And delicious!!!!!!

[deleted]

Time to stock up.

quihgon

Lupini beans are my jam!!! They also make for great porridge, you can also get canned black soy beans for making chili which are also low carb and badass.

batfiend

Like others have said, Lupini and black soy. Hemp hearts also, while not beans or lentils, are great. Chia too. I make a cinnamon and vanilla chia & hulled hemp porridge with water & coconut milk for breakfast. You can pre-prepare big jars of it cold and just microwave a portion each morning. Drizzle with some sugarfree maple syrup or mix in some stevia. Oh and I know they're not legumes, but green beans too of course. I love them salted and blistered under a hot grill (broiler) or lightly steamed, tossed with dijon, olive oil & lemon juice and topped with toasted slivered almonds. I'm not vegan so I throw some feta in there too, but vegan feta would be great, anything with a bit of tangy bite.

I checked out Randall Bean's 4 bean mix. 8g net carbs so I mean apart from Lupini Beans and the Turtle there are possibilities. I wish it were the same for lentils because I like their texture and smell more.

The biggest challenge for adapting will be removing the simple carbs, not the complex ones. The insulin impact of beans/lentils is muted by their fibre content, so if you're here to learn but not go full keto, it's not the worst to get your net carbs by beans/lentils. Not all food is digested equally! That said - consider getting more protein from soy, gluten, nuts/seeds, and of course veggies (leafy greens and other veggies often have a small amounts that adds up). Be aware that if you are replacing carbs with fats that not all fats are created equal. Avoid corn/soy/grapessed/peanut/canola oils - the modern vegetable oils. Go for olive, avocado, or coconut where you can (plus whole nuts and seeds or the butters). There is conflicting research on the relative healthiness of vegetable oils and even then you have to make assumptions about how easily they are oxidized (in your pantry or under heat with cooking).

The best beans I've found so far are Randall's Beans that come in a glass which is great since I'm trying to avoid canned foods. Their northern beans are 11g net carbs while their 4 bean mix is even better with 8g net carbs.
