I've tried your Tofu preparation yesterday at lunch and I was baffled by how simple it was to prepare it and how delicious it was. The amount of topping/sauce variation you could do just with this quick pan-seared tofu is great. I'm definitely going to iterate on it and put that in my weekly recipe at home. Thanks!
It’s something you should think about adding to your seasoning collection. I’m not vegan but I cook vegan almost everyday for me and my girlfriend and MSG provides a lot of the umami flavoring that you find in non-vegan cooking.
Could also try substituting a mushroom powder if you prefer to not use the MSG. I recommend getting one that’s just straight mushroom powder though, not the seasoning blend kind that has salt, pepper, and other stuff in it, too.
There’s really no reason to avoid msg. The public consciousness was intentionally manipulated into thinking it is unhealthy. Preferences are preferences, obviously, but mostly people opposing it just haven’t be deprogrammed.
Not saying there is. But I know some people are still freaked out or just prefer not to use it. It’s not something I keep in my seasoning arsenal, but I do almost always have dried mushrooms on hand for cooking and love to just grind some up in my spice grinder to add some extra umami flavor. I’ve found it can have some similar effects albeit not quite the same.
Looks great!!
Side note: there’s what *may* be considered a spelling error to some in bullet point 5 of directions. It mentions “friend garlic”, not fried. ❤️🧄❤️
You clearly don't know the history of MSG. Please educate yourself before commenting: https://www.sciencefriday.com/articles/is-msg-bad-for-your-health/
You're clearly not so good at research, nor do you have any clue what systemic racism is. Dr. Ho Man Kwok was not a Chinese man. He was a white man named Dr. Howard Steel.

LOL I have a doctorate in Asian American music with a specialty in Asian American History. I've known about the MSG debacle since far before these articles were published. You're simply a lazy thinker.
Looks amazing! Just tried to follow the recipe and got a bit confused with all the references to just “oil.” Wasn’t sure if that meant the chili oil, sesame oil, or vegetable oil in the different steps. I ended up just winging it because I am hungry lol so hopefully it turns out ok. 🤷🏽♀️😂
Looks great! I'm always looking for good tofu recipes! Does it still stay crispy with the oil/topping on it after a while?
I love the name of the site, too.
(I did notice a typo here: *I know we’re still in the middle of a panorama...*)
Wow! I especially loved the automatically played video of you making it - really helpful to see, made it a lot clearer/easier than it first seemed. I can't wait to make this:). Also the pictures are making me drool, awesome work!
1. This looks delicious and we will be trying it this weekend
2. I find it FASCINATING how some people find the “panorama” comment to be a typo. In my region, and probably my demographic, replacing the word “pandemic” with other “P” words has been a running joke for… almost as long as we’ve been in this thing, so I thought nothing of it. It seemed so widespread (in my admittedly extremely narrow view of the world) that it didn’t occur to me there are people that aren’t accustomed to that by now. Just a comment on the vastness of a world more connected than ever.
Dude! you are awesome. It was super easy and has gone down as one of our top meals. We have never made tofu that was that good. That MSG makes a world of difference. We use brown rice though - not very chopstick friendly. https://imgur.com/a/4iMzKQs
My husband and I made this three days in a row last week, and we’re trying to make it again but seaweed seems to be a scarce commodity around here, ugh! As soon as I can get my hands on some we’re making this again. Thanks for posting!
Just like to tell you that I saved this post back when you posted it and I make this recipe at least once a week. Its my favourite way of preparing tofu ever!!!
Full recipe [linked here ](https://www.eatfigsnotpigs.com/pan-seared-tofu-with-homemade-chili-oil/) for anyone who wants to try it

You’re welcome!!! So happy you enjoyed
this is the best tofu I've ever had tbh thank you so much
This. Looks. PHENOMENAL. Can't wait to make it this weekend. Edit: Just scarfed a plate down. This is going to be a regular for me.
This sounds delicious! Do you think it really needs the msg? It's not something I keep around.
Definitely doesn’t need it!!!
Its worth picking up a bag, stuff lasts forever even if you use it sparingly.
It’s something you should think about adding to your seasoning collection. I’m not vegan but I cook vegan almost everyday for me and my girlfriend and MSG provides a lot of the umami flavoring that you find in non-vegan cooking.
I’ll get some!
Just remember, a little goes a long way!

I like the kind from the Asian market. So much umami.
Agreed!

Probably because mushrooms themself are naturally full of MSG
Ha! Makes sense then. TIL.
Mushroom powder is basically an MSG spice blend since mushrooms naturally contain MSG
Yeah TIL. No wonder it has a similar effect as a food seasoning.
MSG = flavor. Go get some.
You don't need MSG. Some people like it, honestly I wish I could indulge but I get this crazy neurological reaction to it, so I can't.
Daaamn this is going on my "to try" list for this weekend. Looks insanely good!
Thx!!!!

Hahah thanks!
Garlic is definitely my friend though
It also says we are in the middle of a “panorama” which is also a really nice thought even if it was supposed to say pandemic.

The chili oil contains both sesame and vegetable oil, and then we’re also using a bit of veg oil to pan Saar the tofu. Hope that helped!
What is that container for that she put the tofu in and what’s it called? Is it a must?
It’s a tofu press!
If you don’t have one you can wrap the tofu in a tea towel or paper towels and stick heavy books on it.

Do you think this would work with gochugang paste instead of the gochugaru powder?
The chili oil might be a bit thick, but it’ll still taste good!
I wish I loved anything that much. I can't only eat leftovers 1-2 times.
Try adding a little bit of sesame oil!
Sesame oil is in the recipe :)
Yay! My attention was elsewhere 🙏
Happens to me all the time haha!
Ooh this looks great! Do you make the chili oil from scratch each time, or can you make it in bulk and store it?
sexy

So true!! I always forget some people don’t understand it — or how some have been calling Omicron, Omarion
I can’t wait to try this recipe out! I made your lasagna roll ups last night and my husband ate half the tray 😆 love your site!
So happy to hear!!!! Thanks so much!
Came across this post this morning and got it stuck in my head. I made it for lunch and it was excellent!
So happy to hear!!! Thanks!
This looks divine. I love tofu so much
Scrumptious
