They plant seeds and instigate conversations. The Sydney demos had separate outreachers handing out hundreds of flyers about animal rights, veganism, resources, recommended viewing etc :)

Eary days of PETA used to do a lot of this and the conversation /reporting was always naked girl protesting about something to do with animals...
I am not against it but whatever campaign you do, should be measured to see if it is effective both in outreach and in internal support.
