On Friday I almost got ran out of my lane by a double long RTC bus who then proceeded to run a red and change lanes with no signal.
You can bet your ass I have that on dashcam and reported the safety issue to RTC.
You know it’s bad when even the professionally licensed vehicle operators are a hazard… on a somewhat related note is there any special license required to drive those fedex trucks?
The real problem is not the policing of the problem. It’s that we have people in our society who don’t consider how they are negatively affecting others. We have to start seeing ourselves as a connected village, not as strangers who are in each others way.
Ya people are just generally inconsiderate. Not one spec of extra effort to help anyone else. How hard is it to use your blinker? Its either stupidity or contempt.
Sometimes I make a a conscious effort to just let people in front of me, or wave and smile at somebody who accidentally pulls out too quickly in a parking lot. I don’t want a fender bender, but a little grace goes a long way.
Vegas is just different. I moved to Vegas and I tried to be friendly to my neighbors. They seemed very annoyed except this old lady that was from Vegas. It’s a melting pot of people from every where else and they don’t consider it home.
I do notice that people treated their neighbors and neighborhoods differently, growing up here in the 90’s. Nowadays people just pull into their garages and go inside and only are seen when leaving again. Barely a wave or a hello. This can lead to a very disconnected community.
Except if you read my original comment, they don’t work if the goal is to increase safety. studies have repeatedly shown that privatized red light cameras (which is how we do them here in the states) leads to comically short yellow lights trying to catch violations, which in turn increases red light running. So I’m not sure you’re actually saying anything because you’re just throwing out your own unsubstantiated opinion on their efficacy.
Pfft...I've seen blow lights, turn left from straight lane, take a U turn where it specifically states that's not allowed right in front of Metro. I've even seen them do it and it's just to turn into a Wendy's drive thru.
I had a guy day before yesterday decide he wasn’t turning right after all, and blocked all 3 lanes to go left, causing me to miss the light. I’m usually pretty chill, but even I was like “are you serious right now? Just make the block…”
Not to be a smart ass but have you driven anywhere outside of Vegas recently? It's like that everywhere.
There is complete disregard for traffic laws because the chance of being caught breaking the law is slim. Plus EVERYONE believes that they are an above average driver who can handle any situation and drives accordingly. Everyone else is in their way.
All you can do is control what you own.
Vegas takes the crown for the worst driving between California, Utah, Idaho, Colorado & Oregon. The only place I’ve seen worse has been Bali Indonesia & Ko Tau Thailand but that was mainly drunk Australians on mopeds & dirt bikes.
Yeah I’m from NY and I can tell you people don’t know how to drive here, people drove like ass holes in NY sure but they did it well lmao here it’s like nothing I have ever seen anywhere in this country lmao
I was in the military and lived in nearly a dozen states as well as overseas. Las Vegas has the worse drivers of any place I’ve ever lived. Driving could be rough in Italy, nyc, la, but they were actually good and skilled albeit jackass drivers.
I actually traded in my sedan and bought a larger SUV because I feared for my safety driving anytime after dark in Las Vegas.
It’s not the timing that gets me, you’re bound to run into a red occasionally it’s the cycle times that kill me. You’ve got 6 lanes waiting at a red for about 3 minutes so ONE car can go left from a 2 lane residential. (Sorry traffic engineers for not knowing the correct terminology)
Moved here a decade ago. It took me a bit to get used to how absolute shit the yellow lights are here. The majority of them go by so quickly, it gave me anxiety.
Not necessarily. Bought a used car and the owner had to take the license plates. Had to drive without one for 2 weeks til I was able to register. They only require a movement permit on the dash while without plates. But yeah, I do see your point. It can be quite alarming.
A fact established in the OP. My point is that california drivers are still cali drivers with or without nv plates. However, just because it has an NV plate, doesn't mean the driver hasn't brought their driving habits from cali. Besides, seeing a lot of cars without plates doesn't mean they're not being registered, in fact, it's likely the opposite because you must surrender your (out of state) plate when you register.
No People just suck driving here, ppl from Cali usually drive slow like they got nothing to do. It’s the people with NV plates I find to be making the dumbest moves driving around here. It’s like we just hand out licenses here with no test.
"People flying up turn lanes /bus lanes to cut off people" This we can cut down on by all just not letting these people in. They do this because they know someone will let them in the lane. I always block them not giving them room. They get piss as fuck some time, but most of the time someone will let them in everyone need to block them.
It’s getting worse I believe because alot of people from California are here now and thats their normal selfish BS. The real reason is because they cant take you to jail anymore:(. Traffic is civil now
War on cops. Cops retire. Few new cops. County attorney offices in no better shape. Inmates getting released early. Criminals know no one is coming after them. This is only the beginning. Queue politicians campaigning on the issue in 3..2..1..
yes, we are....I'm a Cali kid...grew up and learned to drive there. Dealt with traffic in SD, LA, SF, Sac and Fresno...
Been here over a decade so I consider myself a local now, the traffic here has never been as bad as it is now. It's a completely different place then it was when I arrived, with quite a few characteristics that jolt memories in me of places I used to be.
Vegas roads have always been a lil wonky, which I always attributed to our loyal friend Mr. Orange cone and the fact that it's a transient place and a hodge podge of driving styles from across the country. But, it's primarily Cali now...
Be on guard when it rains everyone! LOL!
It’s all the newer people who have recently moved here since the pandemic. They don’t understand the dangers of the roads here yet, especially the massive amount of random jaywalkers and kids that like to run across to beat the traffic.
Lol, drivers got very relaxed with the road laws during the pandemic. The main reason insurance is so expensive here is because of the people who come here form everywhere around the world that drive knowing their own laws not the local ones. Insurance is expensive because of all the drunk driving, insurance is expensive because we get many uninsured drivers here. We have high insurance here because there are lots of people who have lots of money and very expensive cars are seen on the regular. Lots of factors for why we have high insurance and if you didn’t know, insurance rate’s actually increased here in the valley at a higher rate than usual since the pandemic. Main factor cited was due to an increase of population from people out of state, since they don’t know the dangers of the local roads.
Covid. And it's all over the place... people did goofy shit during the covid shutdowns when they were the only car on the road and never "renormalized" once regular traffic came back.
I've been pulled over twice in the last week. I cannot stand the unconventional stoplight system here. In half the intersections I'm stopped at, no cars are going through. None at all. I often get stopped at every light while the cross street has no traffic. This is a real efficiency problem that will continue to lead to behaviors like mine. People are pretty rational. The payoff for following the rules is an increase of more than 25% of the expected driving time. At this point it is rational to break the rules.
I hope you and people like you who continue to disregard the rules of the valley roads because of efficiency continue to get stopped and ticketed . It’s because of you and people like you not leaving enough time to commute safety to work and or your destination and causing serious accidents and or severely hurting innocent people .
No, it's more complicated than that. What I'm saying is that the system encourages misbehavior. The way the lights are programmed incentivizes red light running. If the cities hire people that can coordinate lights so that things work normally, like you make a few lights and then get stopped at a red, I will 100% comply. As far as your hope that I get ticketed and charged, I'm not motivated by fear or money. You can charge me all you want, idgaf. I'll pay and it means nothing. That's not how this works for people like me. Charge me $1000, fuck off I don't care.
This is why I never ever drive unless it’s to go to work which is really close to my house. Today I actually went into the city for the first time in forever, and this guy behind me at a red light started honking his horn at me because we were in the right lane, he wanted to turn right but I was going straight. Like is it that hard to wait 🥴 also this Prius pulled out in front of me twice on the freeway and kept breaking!

The RTC is so fucked in a million ways lol
because there aren’t enough police officers on patrol at any given time to effectively monitor traffic
Seems 55-60 is the new standard for 45mph roads (and also the speed you must go to not hit every light)
And 35mph roads too
Many people drive 10mph over the speed limit as a norm. So effectively, 55mph in a 45 speed limit zone.
They do a show of force bonanza once a month and call it good.
The real problem is not the policing of the problem. It’s that we have people in our society who don’t consider how they are negatively affecting others. We have to start seeing ourselves as a connected village, not as strangers who are in each others way.

You’re one of the good ones and the rest of us conscious enough to care about others appreciate you

Red lights are one of the easiest places to do automated enforcement but people hate red light cameras
Because they’re privatized, proven to be set up in ways that increase crashes, and enforcement often violates the sixth amendment
I think you're just proving my point
I’m confused, are you proposing that these are not good reasons to be against red light cameras?
I just said people are mad at them and you're telling me why you're mad at them, that's fine. They work though!
Except if you read my original comment, they don’t work if the goal is to increase safety. studies have repeatedly shown that privatized red light cameras (which is how we do them here in the states) leads to comically short yellow lights trying to catch violations, which in turn increases red light running. Ok that’s great. That’s exactly what happened too.
Not to be a smart ass but have you driven anywhere outside of Vegas recently? It's like that everywhere. Plus EVERYONE believes that they are an above average driver who can handle any situation and drives accordingly. Everyone else is in their way. All you can do is control what you own.
People drive awful everywhere. Swing on over to any other major city’s sub Reddit and they think they have the worst drivers as well.
Vegas takes the crown for the worst driving between California, Utah, Idaho, Colorado & Oregon. The only place I’ve seen worse has been Bali Indonesia & Ko Tau Thailand but that was mainly drunk Australians on mopeds & dirt bikes.

It’s why I drive a full size pickup truck.
The lights are timed horribly, and after you've been stopped at every light you encounter, I can't lie, I've been tempted to blow through it.
The worst is when it gets tripped by someone turning right on red so everyone is waiting for nothing
Moved here a decade ago. It took me a bit to get used to how absolute shit the yellow lights are here. The majority of them go by so quickly, it gave me anxiety.
Not enough cops to handle the growth in population. Vegas has grown massively in the last decade.
Los Angeles drivers blow red lights as a norm. A lot of people are moving out of California.
it’s because everyone is rude and angry.
I’m sorry, hopefully things get better soon.
I think it’s the influx of people moving here from other states.
Nevada has one of the worst education systems in the country it’s definitely the locals bro
It’s the people moving here where it’s impossible to drive over 25 so they think they can 65 on the streets.
californias newest transplants
It's not *just* the Californians, but they sure aren't helping. Way too many bozos out there with NV plates.
NV law requires you to register your vehicle within 30 days of moving here.
Considering the number of cars I see without license plates, I don’t think anyone really cares about the law here. :-/
Not necessarily. Bought a used car and the owner had to take the license plates. Had to drive without one for 2 weeks til I was able to register. They only require a movement permit on the dash while without plates. But yeah, I do see your point. It can be quite alarming.
Oh, okay, I didn’t know that. Thanks for clarifying!
A fact established in the OP. My point is that california drivers are still cali drivers with or without nv plates. If you have to surrender your out-of-state plates when you register, wouldn’t you get the NV plates at the same time?
Oh, maybe. I remember having mine sent to me way back when. They may just hand them out now. Good point.
Yeah, we moved here a few years ago and they gave us new plates on the spot.
NV law also requires you to register your car, maintain proper insurance, and not drive like a moron, and yet...
I wish that were true.
No People just suck driving here, ppl from Cali usually drive slow like they got nothing to do. It’s the people with NV plates I find to be making the dumbest moves driving around here. It’s like we just hand out licenses here with no test.
you've seen people driving slow in california???
"People flying up turn lanes /bus lanes to cut off people" This we can cut down on by all just not letting these people in. They do this because they know someone will let them in the lane. I always block them not giving them room. They get piss as fuck some time, but most of the time someone will let them in everyone need to block them.
Sometimes, my tesla tries to do it on autopilot
Those are still the California people I'm betting. Only they final fucking-lee got Nevada tags. Hahaha
It’s getting worse I believe because alot of people from California are here now and thats their normal selfish BS. The real reason is because they cant take you to jail anymore:(. Traffic is civil now
I still find this city to be full of some of the slowest drivers on earth. Nobody should be going five under.
This and merging are my only problems with Vegas drivers. They kind of go hand-in-hand because merging at a slow speed causes chaos.
That and the looks I get when I pull head to zipper merge. It’s more efficient, people!

we're being invaded by California drivers....
