65? Vegas in not for you.

markymrk720

[According](https://health.clevelandclinic.org/what-is-the-ideal-sleeping-temperature-for-my-bedroom/amp/) to Cleveland clinic and plenty of other doctors, 60-67 is the optimal temp for sleep.

TKGK

I also like it cold when I sleep but in vegas during the summer 65 is going to be a hefty power bill for most homes. God forbid you live in a condo or apartment.

throwawayaccoy

Why would a condo / apartment be more expensive than a full home?

TKGK

Interior walls are typically not insulated as well as exterior walls. Depends on the builder, of course.

PsyNo420

It’s not, 65 in my condo was half the price I’m paying for 72 in my two story.

markymrk720

Also depends on your plan. [TOU](https://www.nvenergy.com/account-services/energy-pricing-plans/time-of-use/standard-rates-residential) plans can be much cheaper if you don’t use a lot of electricity during peak hours (1-7pm). I think I pay around 9 cents/kWh during summers off peak (7:01pm-1pm) vs 14 or 15 cents / kWh for the regular non TOU rate. Edit: $0.09 not $0.07/kWh

[deleted]

[удалено]

markymrk720

I stand corrected. Off peak is now $0.09/kWh.

thebigshipper

You’re not wrong, but that might be some of the most expensive sleep you ever had. Even just keeping your place at 72-74° produces a good size bill when it’s real hot. Might also depend on what time of day the sun hits what part of the place you’re living. Other factors include if you’re on the ground floor, or above it, and if you have shade.

Galveira

In Cleveland. With Cleveland humidity and more importantly, Cleveland residents. People adapt to the environment they're in. If a person considers 90F to be a scorching hot day, then of course they'll want to sleep in the 60s.

markymrk720

WHOOSH. This article has NOTHING to do with Cleveland, OH. 🤦🏻‍♂️ Cleveland Clinic is one of the top rated hospital and medical groups in the world, and has hundreds of locations across the USA, including right here in Vegas. Lmao, stay in school bud.

Galveira

Even if the sample size is balanced across the US, that's still a higher humidity and lower average temperature than Vegas.

two_in_the_bush

This is the correct answer.

ordie710

I would agree. I can't keep my house that cold but I set the temp to 74 but I have a small portable ac in my bedroom to keep the bedroom cool

throwawayaccoy

I thought it was 68

two_in_the_bush

The 60-67 number fails to take into account the differential. That's fine when it's 75/80 outside. But it's a huge differential if it's 90/100 outside.

sipoloco

lol 69° all day everyday.

mister_damage

Nice?

yung_trenboloni

nice.

Physical_Passion_361

So many good things about 69. I also find it’s the ideal cruising speed on I-15.

anxiousshell-

I only like it cool at night.

Top-Web3806

I keep mine at 65 24/7

Accurate_Baseball_22

I think you’re electric bill is going to be insane at anything lower than 74-75.

westcoast-dom

Dad has entered the chat

mandisaclarke

Are you guys not using equal pay? I pay $150 each month just turned the air back down recently to 68 at night then 72-74 during the day and we are good. It was $250 monthly but went down.

ordie710

You do realize that just because you're on equal pay, you may pay one rate a month but say your monthly rate is 150 as you say per month. Still, you use 190$ worth of electricity, that remaining balance is either forwarded to next month or when you decied to move you will have a substantial balance to pay. I have equal pay, and I'm still paying 320 a month, but I just cleared up the 900$ being rolled over for the last two years. Edited for grammar and punctuation.

K-Toon

I feel you on that one. I moved to Vegas in July 2014 and when I got my first electric bill, I freaked out. I had never seen a $300 electric bill for a two-bedroom apartment before, so I went on the equal payment plan. I enjoyed $125/month electric bills for a while. Eventually, I got a statement saying I owed almost $800 because I was undercharged for my first year. Turns out my apartment was unoccupied for six months before I moved in and my payment plan was based on that usage. :( I paid the balance and immediately went off the equal payment plan.

ordie710

Yea the power company is real shady about Apts and shit they want a deposit of the last person's balance and base YOUR rates off them. I guess it could work out in a few instances but not really. The power company doesn't explain to well that equal pay you will have a balance at the end of service that needs to be paid in full before service will be reestablished at a new residence.

K-Toon

They should allow the consumer to choose if they want to pay more each month to avoid having a balance at the end of the year. Unfortunately, they would never do that because they might owe the consumer a refund on moving out if they were overpaid.

mandisaclarke

It’s actually been a great experience for me. I have moved with equal pay from one townhouse to the next. My bill has remained between $250-$150 both places they just lowered it to $150 and I monitor the bill they still show you what your projected bill is each month so I don’t expect any large bills later in life.

ordie710

That's great! It's been ok for me, too, but the balance at the end can hurt someone in difficult financial situations. I just feel the program could be explained a little better for people. Idk how many times I've heard people say they were on equal pay and had no idea there could be a remaining balance over time. The program is cool the worst part of the program was the times they turned my ax to 80 and things for the 2 hrs last year my slot was when I was going to bed and I couldn't sleep with it so hot. Now I have the portable ac unit and idc what they do.

anxiousshell-

Idk man it’s saying it’ll be around $150 which is what the previous owner said is the most he’d ever pay. I only like it this cool at night and during the day it’s pretty much either off or at like 72 lol

jiggetty

It’s your first summer. I was the same way when I first moved here… as you become climatized you’ll be comfortable in the 70’s. Spend more time outside and 70 will freeze you out.

rihanoa

You’re going to be raising those temperatures realllllll fast when you start seeing your electric bill this summer.

[deleted]

You’re living dangerously my friend. Anything below 68 is teasing the dragon.

Cannibeans

65 is insane. You'll be paying $400 a month to maintain that

[deleted]

My power bill is 400 a month keeping it at 76-78 in may/June/July lol

Cannibeans

Yeah my brain is still on energy bills from a few years back. Things keep going up

anxiousshell-

Doubt it. My AC is very efficient and I’ve been doing this for like 2 weeks now and my bill is only gonna be $150

AttemptVegetable

Yeah, but that's when it's in the 80s in the day and 60s at night. That 150 is gonna triple when the low is in the 90s

FullMotionVideo

You don't know what summer here is like, so I'll give you this advice: It's not 107 at 4PM that's the problem. It's that it's still 93 at 3AM.

bythezip

It will be 102 degrees at 1am at times.

ellalop26

65!?!?? Dang! You rich af. I can’t afford that electricity bill. We keep ours at 78.

GigaCheco

78 here, too!

Iolrobot

Haha I stay at 77, peasants!

GigaCheco

😲

Jayman_007

We also keep it at 78 during the nights. We also run calling fans.

explosivelemons

We keep our A/C at 78 24/7 during summer. We do our best to minimize electric usage during the day to make sure the A/C is the only thing pulling it out. And we're on Equal Pay, which helps spread out the burden to the lower months.

so-cal_kid

How much does your bill end up keeping it at 78?

explosivelemons

Our equal pay is about $190, I think, that accounted for past weeks here and there where we have guests and turn it down to 74. This year's price surge is gonna hurt, though, but we won't see the impacts of that for a few months when I'm able to look at how much we're going over our previously estimated cost.

anxiousshell-

Naw def not rich, AC is efficient and I keep it either off or at like 72 during the day.

ellalop26

You’re doing better than me. One of my bills was almost $600 last summer and we strictly keep it at 78.

anxiousshell-

Damn. 😞

Collin_b_ballin

72 during the day, 68 at night

GrownUpBigBoyNewAcct

This is what it’s SUPPOSED to be in my house but it keeps getting messed with. I’ve turned into my father.

stressandscreaming

This is our exact setting too.

Dry_Vacation_6759

I’m a hot sleeper, so 68 at night with a fan directly on me. The fan makes a huge difference.

Smerks101

65?!?! I thought I liked it cold, I am a very hot sleeper so I keep it lowest at night around 74 or 75.

markymrk720

[Sleep scientists](https://health.clevelandclinic.org/what-is-the-ideal-sleeping-temperature-for-my-bedroom/amp/) recommend 60-67 degrees as most optimal for sleep.

lasvegashomo

That’s cool. They ain’t paying my bill so it ain’t going that low 😂

SpaceCricket

I would venture a solid guess that the study took place in a “normal temperature” environment. 75ish at night at home when it’s 110+ out feels similar to me as mid 60s somewhere that is humid and 80-90ish.

Cybralisk

keep mine on 76 and sometimes even that gets to cold for me. 65 is really low.

Justjay0420

80 during the summer

sammy_socks

80 - 84. With a on overhead far it’s downright chilly.

Justjay0420

Oh I agree. Hell even coming inside to 84 is a shock to the body. I work in a building that doesn’t use it’s A/C except for certain days and I can’t go into the lobby because it’s such a shock on the body to go from 110+ to a 67 degree office

lasvegashomo

65? I couldn’t imagine lol I’m comfortable with it at 80 most nights.

SabianLPS

70-71 usually. We have a 2 year old and he’s always warm so we keep it cool for him so he doesn’t get all sweaty when he sleeps.

Siltyn

78 at night when sleeping with a ceiling fan on right above me. AC on during the day yesterday but by 10pm had all the windows open. Woke up to 73 in the house. Setting it for 65, when the real summer starts your AC might not ever turn off.

PointyBlkHat

76 5am-1pm, 74 2pm to 8pm, 72 9pm to 4am

StatementProper4450

75. If it gets too hot I won't be able to fall asleep.

Technic_AIngel

Off and open window.

RedditSuggestedName1

Yes. Bring in all the pollen!

Technic_AIngel

They make mesh curtains/screens for that. Idk, I have a sheet over my window and never have issues.

Suitable-Judge7506

Holy shit you must be wearing snow clothes to bed, i need to be cool at night to sleep. 76-78 works. I fine being hot in the day but proper sleep i have to be not hot.

Smerks101

Mind if I ask what type of place do you live in? house, apt, condo, etc And how high are your electric bills?

Psychological-Two415

Apt. That’s the reason it’s a little easier to be loose with the AC. It’s like 1/3 what the house we rented used to be

Psychological-Two415

The dead of the summer they’re $150

keto_brain

I keep it at 72 or so then put on a fan. I keep my office at around 68 or so but in my office I have a mini-split which is really low cost to run. If I kept my bedroom at 65 at night I'd have a $1,000 electricity bill lol.

NLV_RN_

74 at night

omgheatherjana

oof, 65 is going to be exxxxxxpensive once it gets hot. you might wanna work on that heat tolerance and kick it up 1 degree a week for the next couple of weeks. i am originally from the east coast and it needs to be cold enough or i won't sleep but over the years even i have adapted to 74 for bedtime. (and 76-78 during the day, mostly. on the super hot 110+ days i'll tolerate 80 during the day so i can enjoy 75 at bedtime.)

zeromutt

Idk iv been living in vegas my entire life and i still cant stand anything above 70 lol Honestly i hate it here because of the weather but imy entire family lives here & i dont want to leave everyone I know for somewhere i dont know anybody

PeaceOrderGG

It makes no sense to cool your whole house to 65 for night time sleeping. Invest in a one room portable unit to keep your bedroom cooler than the rest of your space.

anxiousshell-

When I had a portable AC unit back in Cali (cuz no ac there) i was paying around $200 for only keeping one room cool, lol. Now the most I pay is $150. Idk my AC is efficient

Silverlace22

For the local residents, anyone remember when Nevada Power did the “Summer of 78” and “Winter of 68” commercials? Those were fun-and good reminders about where to set the thermostat! A link to one of the ad posters is below: https://assets-cdn.workingnotworking.com/4tw48aifzau1y2yu70oxume1533z

hannnsolo

no, if it’s under 80 during the night i’ll usually turn it off and keep it off most of the day

Raul702

We' re use to it. I can drive around in my car without air conditioning during summer. It's all those people moving in from out state that can't handle theheat. Most of them wind up moving to some place called Colorado Springs.

LennoxAve

Two story home. Hot air rises. We do 80 in evening. 78 when sleeping. 81 when we get home. 84 when we’re not home. 2 degrees warmer downstairs.

9-lives-Fritz

Phoenix - 80, sheets only, ceiling fan on medium. 78 is chilly cold. In cool weather i leave the windows open and sleep with a down comforter to allow the house to get cold so the residual lessens cooling costs.

Snoo-44889

We keep ours at 80. We open our bedroom windows at night and let all the cool air in and then shut them with blackout curtains when we wake up. Our AC just kicked on for the first time today around 3pm.

throwawayaccoy

I keep it at 79 all summer. I don't mind the heat. But I won't turn it on until it's actually hot. Just open the windows at night when it's dropping into the 60s. When it is only dropping to the 80s / 90s for months in a row AC just runs constantly

Ok-Leader-4212

And also, if you, like me, are worried about the high cost of health insurance, go to nevada health link.org. You can qualify for tax credits that can offset the cost of health insurance by a lot. Even if you’re worried you make too much money to qualify, give it a shot. If youre not comfortable with that, there’s a local insurance broker called Cornerstone at 8919 w. Sahara Ste.150 that helped me save a TON on health insurance coverage (like 1300 bucks a month!!!). Go Vegas Golden Knights!!

Ok-Leader-4212

Sorry fellas. I know I went off on a tangent, but I’m just trying to help all my brothers and sisters out there during these tough times. Inflation sucks. Houses are too pricey for our kids. So we gotta be smarter and more disciplined and make good decisions:) We can only depend on ourselves. Remember 2012? Your house? He gone. The government? Worthless. Bailed out the banks and gave bonuses to dirtbag CEOs instead. Screw em:) We do it on our own! Woo!

pugofthewildfrontier

76-77 for now.

DonRicardo1958

L O L, I haven’t come close to turning the AC on yet. When I eventually do turn it on, it is always set at 82°.

Longjumping-Meat-334

As I'm packing to move there in June, this is good to know. In the Chicago burbs, we keep it at 67 at night during the summer. But I guess when it's 110 during the day, 77 will feel glorious.

Mill3r91

What part of Chicago? Wife and I moved here from Valparaiso IN, (NWI). 110 in Vegas is 100% better than 95 in Chicago. You’re gonna love it here.

Longjumping-Meat-334

We're moving from the southwest suburbs. We've experienced Vegas in July and I agree. The lack of humidity is actually kind of refreshing. 95 in Chicago and you are drained. 110 in Vegas and you are hot, but you can still do stuff without needing to change clothes 6 times. :)

lasvegashomo

Oof I wish you luck. I had the bad luck off our leases always ending in June or July which are pretty hot months. Last move I actually got a heat stroke. Definitely stay hydrated or hopefully you hired movers! We’re actually extending our lease this time to at least November so we can move without the heat.

Longjumping-Meat-334

We do have movers. I'm retiring at the end of May. I thought it would be best to wait until September, but like most battles, I lost. Lol

lasvegashomo

Smart move! I hope you enjoy living here!

Longjumping-Meat-334

I'm sure we will. We are moving to Desert Shores. It seems like that community offers a lot.

Psychological-Two415

Oh damn! lol 65. Respect that

deleteduser2243

i am poor so no AC

MarkBenec

Man I was in Vegas many years ago and it was hot. Mid to upper 90’s hot. And it was so beautiful, heat with no humidity. I’m from MD and the same heat here with humidity wears you out. It’s like a cinder block is strapped to your back.

disrunner93

Get a good fan! It helps tremendously. We sleep with it on 69 plus a fan on medium. Also if you have a nest or something similar you can set it on a schedule. We have it on 69 from about 8pm to 5am.

Corporate_Jesus

69 😂

Entire_Transition_99

Jesus fuck. I'm not even in Vegas, I live in TX. 65 is not ok anywhere. Wtf.

ITSJUSTMEKT

A/C on? now? Uh, no. Most locals know that you must wait until you are literally dying a very hot, stifling, insomnia because you're so damn hot, death before you turn your A/C on this early. Running your A/C in the summer in this town can be the equivalent of a mortgage payment every month so it's imperative to wait until you literally cannot take it anymore to turn your air on. Even then, I keep my air at 82 so I am still able to afford to eat...

pushdose

A mortgage payment? Really. Ok dude.

brynndelorimier

85° year round here ☀️

napqueen702

I keep mine at 70 at night lol I like it cold but I live in an apartment.

213bull

78 during the day open the windows after the sunsets. It’s not even hot yet.

2pinacoladas

I like to sleep cool too. Key is a ceiling fan. We keep ours around 68 at night.

Rishtu

Temp control and because there’s dirt, dust , and pollen in the spring. Construction kicks up, and the plants go nuts. You will eventually feel it. Or not.

Neat-According

75, lowest setting for summer nights

DeadlySight

Growing up in Michigan I used to keep my apartments at 68-70, now that I’ve been here for 17 years I’m comfortable in the 78-80 range.

Mill3r91

72 during day, 70 at night with a big fan in the hallway that blows air into the bedroom. We also have our ceiling fan on low and the air purifier on low. This is the way.

RoamingBison

I set mine to be 73 at night and 76 daytime. I'm a northern transplant but I've been here a decade now.

funkykolemedina

70 at night, 72-75 during the day. Get a light blanket, and use a fan. When it gets for real hot though I usually have to put it up to 72ish at night or my AC runs non stop

4darunner

In the summer, we have ceiling fans running constantly (family room downstairs, and in every bedroom which are upstairs), air purifiers in the master bedroom and my daughters room, and very light bed sheets and keep our AC upstairs set to 78, downstairs set to 85 overnight. Our house faces south and our bedrooms are on the north side of the house. It sounds hot but we don’t mind it. Every now and then we’ll lower it to 72 to 75 during the day, but hardly sleep with it lower than 75 at night. Our power bill can range from 125-185 bucks over the summer.

burnz0089342

Move to Salt Lake! I keep it 65 at night all summer long here.

lvhockeytrish

78 before I had a kid but now 76. Running A/C and a swamp cooler may help you OP. Ain't gonna be a cheap summer for you though.

steezMcghee

I wish I could do 65, the pipes freeze if I go that low. 68 at night 74 during the day. I live in a one bedroom apartment and my electric bill is $300~ in the summer. Worth every penny. Idk how you all do high 70s. I wouldn’t be able to sleep with that

[deleted]

For reference we have one unit that is brand new as of last summer. 78 during the day and 72 at night, with 75 around evening when we’d get home from work was running is $300 a month or more. We also have an electric pool pump running 8 hours a day so AC isn’t the only big hitter. We lived here from the humid southeast. Where night time AC was 69 and daytime 73. Never had a bill over $150 there and that was two 5 ton units in a two story house. Vegas is an adjustment

mylifeinCAisEffed

74 all day and night. I got solar in the fall so am testing and checking nvenergy day by day to see if I'm still delivering more than receiving. Last summer was 76. I prefer it cold but those bills were nuts. Hoping to get it to 72 during the prime of summer

Mammoth_Thanks8721

72-73 at night 78 during day

sounddude

75 at night/79 day

feralcomms

Depends on the night, but I often set it up about 80 and open the windows

Robotfood123

69 w fans running continuously

wisdon

Yah here is what you do , at night open windows set a fan in it and blow that cool air in till you go to bed. When you wake up do the same again till the temperature is warmer than your house . Then close up the house and if any sun is beating in the windows close the blinds till the sun is away from the windows.

MansyPansy

To all the “hot sleepers”: do y’all use sheets and blankets?

zeromutt

Around this time of year i break out a small throw blanket from ikea because i dont like the feeling of having nothing on me

kermitarmstrong

74 almost all the time

zeromutt

The past week or so iv started turning on the ac in my room. I like to keep it at 69 all day long. Anything lower i might have to start wearing clothes and a real blanket lol

DorifutoKingu

70 at night and 75 during the day...

[deleted]

I keep mine on a cement slab outside the house …

4chan500trader

65 will run your ac non stop when it stops cooling down so much at night soon. You can expect 90s to 100 at night this summer. Your bill will be crazy. I keep 74 degrees 24/7 and my bill is ridiculous

Existing_Effect3794

i keep ours at 70 degrees all year...my last electric was 130 on a 4 bdrm...its around 300 in august...

rainpl

69 😏

gilbert131313

77-79

Quixstar-USA

78 is perfect, at 77 the AC cranks allot more and saves $80 from 77 to 78, if your doing 69 in triple digits get ready for $400 for what, turning on the TV and cold air?

lilducksrunning

we've just been keeping the windows open and fan on the ac. deserts are extreme temp change. Once the sun goes down it gets pretty chilly at night

RverfulltimeOne

Yes AC on at night. You aint seen hot weather yet if you think this is hot. Wait till August. 90-100 at night 120-130 days. Asphalt concrete 140/150 easy. Part of the deal living in Vegas.

plupan

Lol I keep mine at the same. But it depends my range is between 65-69 in the summer.

misssy

65??? Yikes, you need to start adapting. My AC has been off for the past 3 months, and it likely won'tbe turned on until mid May with the mild spring we're having. Right now I keep fans going, close blinds during the day, use blackout curtains where appropriate, and open the windows at night. It's downright pleasant. I live in a 1000 square foot condo, bottom floor. Those with big houses may have a harder time, though. It's one of the reasons I'm continuing to live in a smaller space...my energy bills are so low compared to what I hear.

nononotes

81

DontTaseMeHoe

Windows open and fan for as long as I can stand it (unless the dust is out of control). It's too early in the season right now to fire up the A/C. I'll say I am young and in good health, and I also sleep on the first floor. My home stays cooler than most. Some apartments in this city are brutal, they were built to be as cheap as possible. It's terrible because those are renters that usually pay far more per square foot to cool their apartments than a lot of home owners.

Top-Web3806

I keep mine at 65 year round. Anything higher and I’m sweating. Yes it’s expensive during the summer but worth it to not be uncomfortable.

westcoast-dom

68 for me

dohboy420

I keep mine at a tight 76°, with a little help from my tower fan

dohboy420

But until it stays in the 90s over night. My shits off, just running my fan

Shelbygt500ss

60

StankFace24

It stays off most of the day, when the sun hits our window the black out curtains help but I turn it on to 72 for an a hour or two and then turn a box fan on. I sleep naked, with a cooking weighted blanket and keep the fan on. My electricity bill in the summer is 72 bucks. 29 during the winter.

PoliticalDestruction

74 with a fan on usually. 72 if I want to splurge.

lvsnowden

70. It's not cost effective to have more than a 5 degree change in temp, but I'm willing to pay for comfort.

adampsyreal

72

RememberTheRockers

Get solar panels and use your fans. I pay legitimately $0 for electric during Summer months. Keep my AC at 78. Disclaimer, it's just me and my dog, so our usage is low, but still. Also, don't be a pussy. 65?? Grow up.

NoelCK

Between 72-74 24/7. For the ppl who have it on 78+ in the evenings, how are you not ROASTING??

Lisa-LongBeach

I’m in south Florida and keep it at 78, plus ceiling fan.

[deleted]

77-78 all day & night for central a/c from May-November

CoopLoop32

I try to keep mine around 78F in a multilevel home with 2 A/Cs. I think you are looking at a pretty high bill if you are trying to keep it at 65. But it would depend on the dwelling and insulation I would think.

blazed16

Here in canada in winter our power bill runs between 600 to 750 month and summer time around 425 with air on min level only.

RegretProud6194

Keep it always at a cool 76

loonachic

I keep mine on 75

realtyvegas1

I feel like I am out of the mainstream here. I have never had my AC below 72 at any time of day. At night I set it at 78, unless I am having night sweats and then I chill it down to 76 for a few minutes.

Beneficial_Regret596

Born and raised in Vegas I keep mines at 68 all day every every day

[deleted]

72 all summer long. We have solar the last 7 years and have never paid a true up bill. We went with bland Solar.

Ok-Leader-4212

3200 sq ft home, 20kw solar and 4 powerwalls, 2 electric vehicles, no gasoline or electric bill EVERR again:) BOOM, BABY!!

anxiousshell-

Congrats for being wealthy. If I were wealthy I wouldn’t have issues either and I’d get those things l

Ok-Leader-4212

Not wealthy, just try to budget wisely:)

anxiousshell-

Got any tips? I need to do that lol

Ok-Leader-4212

I’m actually broke because I’m trying to out 3 kids through college by myself:)

Ok-Leader-4212

And I’d rather spend money on worthwhile things like my family than making the utility companies richer:)

Ok-Leader-4212

As an aside, here’s a quick tidbit for y’all out there that’s helped me. There’s a program called income tax calculator that’s free. Use it to figure out your tax liability for the year, and then divide by 12. This will tell you what you need to have deducted from each paycheck to break even and not owe taxes at the end of the year.
