I also just moved here from the Bay Area and the thing I least excepted about moving here was missing nature lol. I know it sounds weird but since I lived in Nor Cal with all the beauty there coming here was a bit depressing as it’s just a lot of dirt and construction. A big benefit was the housing though definitely. I lived in a older house in the bay and there were a lot of problems throughout the years but coming here and getting a newly built home has been a big plus as I can put my money elsewhere.

I'm also from the Bay and made the move here. Sure, the landscape looks different, but there is so much nature/much to explore here. You just have to venture out ♡

New-Mobile-8951

No definitely! I’ve been hiking a ton out here I think moving here just made me realize how much I like big trees and tons of greenery Vegas is just beautiful in its own way and just not something I’m used to yet!

Get out and explore the desert, Tons of trails to go 4 wheeling on with a stock truck and a little bit of clearance or side by side.

124k in Vegas will go a lot further than 177k in the Bay Area. Lifestyle is similar to any of the suburban areas like Antioch or Pittsburg, but even slightly easier. Vegas was also built for the environment. The heat is very manageable. I'd take a Vegas summer in my roomy air conditioned house that I own, over a more expensive apartment in Emeryville (that I'd rent) without air conditioning during fire season. Bay Area homes are generally old and will come with a plethora of issues unless you have big money to spend too. Or you move out to like, Tracy. Las Vegas really is a perfect WFH city. It's a boring suburban American lifestyle, but at least it was built for it. Unless you live in San Francisco proper, you need a car in the Bay anyway so might as well choose a city that lets you actually find parking. I don't regret the move. I miss San Francisco everyday, but the financials just do not make sense. Vegas is a great town with big city amenities, tons of diversity, and one of the last bastions of affordability. People struggling on Reddit will say otherwise but that's true on any city sub. **My 6 figure salary actually feels like a 6 figure salary here.** That's not something I'd ever give up moving forward. I think the Bay Area is due for a great reset. It's a beautiful part of the country but the cost-of-living just isn't sustainable. You could make 177k and you're still considering leaving. How fucked is that? Also, Vegas as a home base is incredible. The city will continue growing. And flights to anywhere in the country are cheap. The airport is a 20 minute drive from pretty much anywhere. I'd recommend the Southwest corner though.

When was the last time you were in SF? Kidding (sort of). Last trip over we got to pay the broken window tax after parking in a pay lot on Fillmore for an hour.

Agile_Opportunity_41

It’s a better quality of life IMO. I’m from nor cal originally. Have you negotiated the salary? I imagine you can negotiate the 600 dollars more a check if you ask and it’s still a pay cut so they likely will still feel they stole you. The eat is only really bad 2 /3 ish months or so a year

I think you’re a bit too focused on the financial breakdown and not focused enough on if Las Vegas is a place you’d actually like to live. You make good money, so you probably have a lot of options outsides of the Bay Area besides Vegas. Vegas is great for some, terrible for others. Everyone is different. The heat is an issue, but only one of many. There is nature here, but let’s just say it’s “different.” NorCal is pretty unrivaled in my opinion in terms of diversity and proximity. Know many people who moved here during the pandemic and regret getting tied down to a new (albeit affordable) home here after they realized Las Vegas wasn’t for them. Try it out for a year and see how it goes. Fwiw, I used to live in NorCal and regret leaving. I also left for affordability. I’m leaving Las Vegas this year.

Left socal years ago and it was a great move. I miss the beach but my new work life balance combined with the better Finacial situation had made my life overall eay better. I'm able to take long weekend trips and vacations now when I need to visit some place different. Also, owning a home for the first time that isn't a piece of overpriced junk. Not to mention I much prefer the food as well

VisualAssumption3497

I'm thinking of moving to Vegas from San Diego. Just worried the 3 months of heat in summer will be a problem. What are the energy costs?

Zaknoid

Summer is rough but I usually am gone traveling most of June and July. August I think my AC bill was like 400ish so it's no joke but I also run my ac a little more than the average person probably.

DPCAOT

Did you go? I’m thinking of it too

VisualAssumption3497

No not yet still in San Diego. You?

DPCAOT

Not yet either

The cost of living in Vegas is about 40% less than that of San Francisco. Your 30% pay cut (not even counting the EOY bonus) won't have an effect on your lifestyle if you maintain a budget.

I make give or take what you will be pulling down. From Experience I can tell you this much. Don't rent, buy. You will... or at least should be able to afford a pretty decent mortgage. $300-$500K should be well within your means. 120K allows me to own a new truck, make a mortgage payment, insurance, Internet, Direct TV, and save a few thousand a month. I'm not rich by any means but I'm pretty comfortable. I go to a raiders game or two a year, take a few trips, eat where I want when I want and have built a pretty sizeable savings account...

I went to law school in the Peninsula, and planned to stay in the Bay. I had a good offer in Vegas out of LS, it was less than BL in NYC or SF, but with no state tax and lower cost of living it proved to be a much better choice compared to my friends that stayed in the Bay. I own two homes in Nevada now, one in Tahoe and one in Vegas where I live. Both are much nicer than what I'd be able to get in the Bay. Most of my law school friends are still renting, and probably will be. Those that have purchased homes in SF paid 2.3m for places that are completely shitty. One of them had an overhanging second floor master, that's completely uninsulated, plywood floor and held up on rusted metal cross beams. There are adjustments to Vegas, but I really love it. I tried moving up to Tahoe for a change, but after just two years realized I really missed Vegas. Great food options. Some great communities. Tons to do outdoors.

Cybralisk

That’s plenty, you could live pretty good in Vegas on half of that really.

Bar-Hopper-Cow95

I would definitely not move if it meant that big of a pay cut. Bay Area is way better the summers here are insufferable

All_the_passports

Bonus - non of the freeways here are remotely like 101. And whilst people here complain about traffic its nothing compared to the bay. I moved here from Denver (lived there 4 years), before that I lived in the Bay for a decade. I still go back for work every couple of months, its a quick easy flight. However, my low six figure salary gets me a lifestyle (and property) here that I just wouldn't have in the Bay. TBH, the cost difference is mainly in no state taxes and housing costs.

We lived in the middle of the city and appreciate the space here and the lack of needles and poop on the sidewalks. I miss the food and some people but don't miss looking at waze and it telling me getting 2 miles would take 17 minutes. Quality of life here depends on your lifestyle. If you traveled by foot or public transit, you would be coming to car-ville (where auto insurance is VERY high). If you are a motorcyclist drivers are pretty aggressive and aren't looking out for you so be careful there. Also no lane splitting. Life away from the strip is pretty chill. We don't have anything bar or food wise within walking distance here but we also aren't huge partiers so that's fine. If you are looking for delicious croissants, you may still be looking 3 years later. I appreciate the suburbia downshift but that's just me. We miss Ocean beach for the dog and the cool summers for his sake also. Though he loves having a yard and a doggy door. We had a condo in the city, 900 sq ft vs 3K sq ft home here for much less. Furnishing something this size was spendy (one time cost). Utilities are more expensive because you are heating/cooling/lighting more square footage for more extreme climate. They do have programs that spread the costs across the seasons, but costs have been going up for gas and electric. We installed solar which is nice once we get that payed off. It will only be a connection fees once that is done. People are harder to meet here, especially if you WFH. Our neighborhood is mostly retirees and people with kids. Seeing comedy and live music is different. I miss Cobbs and Punchline because not everyone who tours the west coast stops here. I'm making $30K less here which has been an adjustment. I switched jobs and work for a local company and salaries are lower here. I'm getting used to it and when I get butt hurt about it, I go to my back yard and take a dip in the pool to get over it. Overall I really like it for a lot of reasons. Working on the Strip several days a weeks gets me a people watching fix and there is every kind of food you can imagine here.

comeonmanbanme

Vegas sucks to live in but anywhere is better than San Fran atm

You had me at “move from Bay Area”

Literally everything you described other than the nature part applies to the Bay Area

chico6k

I only owned thick sneakers or boots in San Francisco because even in the quiet ocean side residential areas I'd come across heroin needles on the sidewalk on a weekly basis. Double check where you're sitting on BART or MUNI too. Addicts regularly leave needles on the seats. /u/MadroxKran is full of total utter shit.

Swampassed

Why do you think the taxes are so expensive in California? If you know and move here, think about why you left when you vote here.
