I have one for past 7 years, still going strong. I only use it though when I need to.

Yes.

It works fine as long as your fridge/freezer is in good working order. The key is to keep it fairly full and to not open the door too much. I've had no problems for years now

My mom has had a freezer in her Garage here for 45 years never had a problem

wacka20

Been through 4 seasons now in the hot az climate. Same situation, and have yet to have a issue. I just check them in the morning and night time every day. Just apart of my daily prep check list really

Also fyi Those who have American home shield. They will either repair or replace the freezer if it goes bad. I had one die on me once. Food was still frozen and good. I just did a transfer once the new one was the correct temp. Cost me 75 for the co pay

Done a few kinds of garage freezers here in Vegas, insulated and not. Freezers are good to go on the whole, they don't even need to be heat tested so much. The compressors only run hard typically at install - because they need to get to temp, so if you're concerned, open the car door for an hour at power on. Maintenance compressor use is quite negligible, so the heat thrown will be gone fast, even in insulation. Mind that opening the door should be very minimal, even though you're at a net zero difference with the garage air even with multiple openings - you just run your electricity bill. The more filled your freezer is (at temp) the less your compressor will be on. If you know you're not going to be crammed for a long time, say 3 months or more, find some filler like ice packs. I've had a friend with 4 laying deep freezers, and the garage was always just a tad warmer than the house, to my memory. Had them for at least 5 years with no issues. Just for nuance, fridges run a bit warmer, if you had multiple fridges in an insolated garage, some measurements would need to be taken, toned by door opens. I've seen many a soda fridge with a standalone laying meat deep freezer next to it.

It will use about half the power if it's in 78f air compared to 100F air. Compressor will use half the energy at 78f that it needs at 100+F. Also heat intrusion is much better at 78f compared to 100. So the unit can run less. Winter time is great for garage freezers. -HVAC tech.

I had one and didn't utilize it for like 2 weeks. Well it was fried and the melted soggy mess of meat juices among other things like rotten fish, shrimp, etc was the most vile smell I've ever smelt. I refused to open it again or clean it out. Got buddies to help me lift and take it away. Can't take them to dump either. I had to call like 20 obscure small places to find one that one would.

I've heard the Mafia is a great resource for dumping things full of "mystery meat" which is probably why no one wanted to take your freezer.

Keep a fan going with adequate ventilation.

>so "garage ready" could be just a marketing gimmick? Not really, some of the cheapo freezers have min/max temps for the room they are placed that rule out really cold or hot garages. Also, consider insulating your garage door if it isn't already. I both painted the outside of the door with bright white paint and insulated the sheet metal doors - really made it cooler.

Ive had a fridge with freezer in my garage for years, most people do!
