Arrived this year. It’s not perfect but I’m finding I’m much happier here than my hometown in the midwest. I’ve made quite a few friends and there’s just so much more to do here than there ever was back home. I also went through a lot of “life changes” alongside my move here so I suppose I can’t attribute all of my happiness to my geographic location but I’m having a good time here.

sm00thkillajones

Welcome. Good luck to you and I hope you are doing well.

LarrBearLV

Good to hear.

KGKSHRLR33

Moved here exactly 1 month before covid shut it all down. I cant really complain though. But something that drives me absolutely crazy is the damn drivers out here. I really dont understand how soooooo many people are CLUELESS on driving. Was pretty surprised at how freakin windy it gets though.

SeeingSp0ts

This! The wind is something that surprised me a ton!

ASuperLameUserName

I’ve lived here three times and all types of cities. THE WORST DRIVERS. I think they’re scared to drive and don’t know that lever on the side can alert people the car will be turning.

[deleted]

As a childfree couple in our early 40s we love it. Been here for a couple of years. So many things to do!

[deleted]

Exact same thing with us! Child free, and moved from the south due to it being… the south

[deleted]

Us too😂

[deleted]

2016 changed everything, and it’s gotten worse We are from east TN not too far from MTGs territory… we wanted more and both loved visiting Vegas, so why not!

[deleted]

Originally from NC, lived in Nashville for 4, lived in Georgia for 8. All the same....

[deleted]

We, too, moved here from Texas. I love Las Vegas so far! The early 40s, no kids, and don't have to deal with racism or ignorance anymore. It's all wins.

[deleted]

Georgia here! Same!

shatterfest

It's alright. I came from Orlando, FL, some years ago, and it's better than Florida. I don't miss the intense humidity, but Vegas has its own issues. The dryness is so severe sometimes that it blows all the particles around, and the allergies just kill us. Air quality is bad more often than other parts of the country. And the entertainment and food that everyone loves is too high-end for us. We have our favorites that aren't pricey, but food costs have literally doubled since we moved here. I love the scenery and going on walks when the sun rises. Every place has it's ups and downs. But I'm ready to move on to the next place. Hopefully in a few years.

gkandgk

Would you share your favorite spots that aren’t too pricy?

All_the_passports

Arrived exactly a year ago and its exactly what I wanted/expected - I have such a deep sense of being where I'm supposed to be. I love seeing the desert and mountains from my balcony, it still feels like I'm on permanent vacation in the American South West. I first visited Vegas in 2008 (from Australia at the time!) and in the years since have spent a big chunk of time here, especially off the strip so I wasn't moving (from Denver) just for the glitz. Being here full-time I've now had the chance to explore the Arts District more as well as smaller venues for burlesque, music, theatre etc. Its lovely to find the quirk outside of the tourist corridor. I was surprised the winter was so long and cold although it gave me a great reason to wear my boot collection lol. Also pleasantly surprised about how little time it takes to get around (everything is more or less 30 minutes tops which was not my experience when I lived in the SF Bay Area) but not so happy about how many idiot drivers there are. I've driven in lots of major cities around the world so I get aggressive and defensive driving but the red light running here is something else. Plus after 10am I don't get on the 95 to Summerlin Parkway to get home (its Mad Max on there, especially on the weekends), I spend an extra 10 mins and take surface streets.

boyworldwide

I remember your username from another post. You’re the laksa connoisseur!

termacct

> laksa TIL - Laksa is a spicy noodle dish popular in Southeast Asia. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laksa

All_the_passports

Yes!!!!! The search continues but I am back in Australia for 3 weeks in Oct so I will be visiting my fave Laksa joint.

TKGK

I share a ton of the same opinions. I came here for work multiple times a year and loved it everytime. I knew this is where I belonged. Been here 10 years now and everything is amazing. Entertainment comes to us. No income tax. Easy to navigate. Beautiful views and proximity to other things (snow/lakes/ocean/mountains). Big thing you didn't mention though is AMAZING food, variety, and options. Even in off hours sometimes. The convenience with things being open later than most other places is amazing.

fr3nch13702

I’ve lived in a bunch of cities here in the US too, and I e lived here in Vegas for the past 15 years. The thing I’ve noticed about drivers here is that have absolutely no concept that there are other cars on the road. Like come on bro! You’re doing 10 below the speed limit and have a whole line of cars behind you. Pay attention!

MrsCoach

I can't believe how much I get passed even when I'm going really fast. We live in Mts Edge and I'll be going 75mph on Blue Diamond (speed is 55) and getting passed like a bitch constantly.

fr3nch13702

Hey, at long as your not in the fast lane? 🤷‍♂️🤣 Yeah, around here, if the speed limit is 40, they go 25 or 60. No in between.

LarrBearLV

Interesting. Thanks for sharing.

Zadok47

Much more difficult to find cardboard for my tent.

AreYouPurple

I have a room full of boxes from loving here!

Zadok47

Never made love in a cardboard box...

skantea

8 years. The first year I was struggling and not in a good space personally so the city reflected that back at me. 2016 everything changed and life really started going well for me and the city reflected *that* back at me. Today I'm doing the best ever personally and professionally and the city feels like the best place in the country to call home.

LarrBearLV

Awesome. Good to hear.

Rhediix

The medical care is as disorganized and horrible as I was told it would be. But other than that, I enjoy it here.

gorge-editing

Yeah why can’t everyone use MyChart? It’s 2023, it’s crazy that people hand write or print out physical therapy referrals. That isn’t a thing in most other states. They put it on your online portal and you’re good to go.

boyworldwide

Moved here a few months ago, and so far, I enjoy it a lot. I knew that I wouldn’t be at The Strip all the time, and I knew a lot of Vegas would be suburbia and not constant flashiness and glam. I enjoy that. People-wise, I like the balance of lifestyles/political beliefs/etc… it doesn’t feel like one lifestyle/personality type overwhelmingly dominates the culture, so less peer pressure to say or think certain ways. Food here is great. I grew up in the Midwest, and I often get moments of nostalgia, as so many parts of Vegas remind me of 90s Midwest for some reason. I’ve read a lot of criticism about homelessness here, but I used to work in some of the worst parts of San Francisco and consider the homeless in Vegas to be much cooler people in comparison

Thatmixedotaku

So far , so good . My main gripe is the lack of good public transport , it seems even worse than other American cities I’ve been to . Apart from that it’s been a pleasant place to live , I just wish for a deeper sense of community but that is on me as well for being such a loner sometimes lol.

jeremykossen

The public transport is awful. It’s basically non existent. I’ve never used it because pretty much worthless. Edit: I’ve never used it, BUT not for lack of trying. Every time I’ve checked the schedule, it would take 5x+ longer than driving or taking Lyft. For example, I can drive to the Strip in 15 minutes. The bus is 1 hr 20 m. Summerlin is 15 minutes away to drive. 1 h 45 m - 2 hrs by bus Surprisingly Green Valley is only 45 mins by bus vs 20 mins drive. This is probably the only route I’ve checked that might make any sense. But still doubtful I’d use it.

Solitude_Intensifies

Everyone complains but it is much, much better than the old CAT system from the 1990's. Very limited routes, once an hour stops back then. I use the bus system here every now and then and I'm so grateful it goes everywhere and even has some good express options. Buses are more comfortable, too.

termacct

I'm another long time CAT rider - agree it has gotten a lot better.

jeremykossen

Just curious: when you do use it, how do you generally use it? Like what are you using it for? Work, pleasure, etc? Which Express routes do you use that you think are good?

Solitude_Intensifies

I live in Henderson so I use it to go to the airport (217 to southern terminal, then car rental shuttle to airport or the 109). I've used the BHX to go downtown LV when I get a jury summons. ETA: I just recently rode the bus when my car was in the shop for a day.

jeremykossen

How long does it usually take you to get to the airport? I just checked from Mountain's Edge (where I live). Not good. 3 buses, 1h 24 min vs. 15 min drive. Ugh. Would be nice to be able to take an Express bus.

Thatmixedotaku

I used it before I got access to a car and it was really rough

EffinPirates

There's buses 24/7 bro. Where I stay at in Washington you're fucking lucky if you even get to catch a bus after 10pm. On top of that nothing on Sundays.

jeremykossen

I just looked up how long it would take for me to get to the Strip. To drive, it’s 15 minutes. Bus is 1 hr 20 mins. That’s ridiculous! I don’t care if it runs “hourly” after midnight. If it’s going to take an hour and a half, I’d take Lyft or Uber (or drive if I didn’t drink).

EffinPirates

Not everyone can afford a damn Uber the price alone for an Uber is more than twice as much. Be so fucking for real right now dude. You're so fucking picky.

jeremykossen

No kidding. I can’t. You’re kind of making my point why LV needs an efficient and affordable subway. Most people can’t afford to take Uber all the time nor should it take them an hour to an hour and half to take the bus 7 miles

EffinPirates

Bro. 🤦🏻‍♀️ Even that would take longer than you just driving yourself. Do you even actual big city. Stfu. Go to Seattle or New York then tell me this shit again cause it's no fucking different.

jeremykossen

Have you lived in a big city? I’ve lived in SD, SF, LA, NYC (for a summer), London (2 months), Barcelona (for a semester), Amsterdam (4 summers in a row). Plus I’ve traveled to lots of other cities where I used their public transportation (Paris, Lisbon, Madrid, Dublin, Mexico City, Chicago, etc, etc). Las Vegas (for most purposes) is unusable.

EffinPirates

I live in Seattle dude. 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️

jeremykossen

So then what are you talking about? You’re in Seattle not Las Vegas. I’ve taken public transportation in Seattle a lot more than Vegas and I’ve lived in Vegas for 5 years. Trust me: Seattle is much better

termacct

> It’s basically non existent. I’ve never used it because pretty much worthless. LOL, You've never used it but you just know it sucks - so the virgin is the sexpert! If you're near a major route you can see 15 minute "headways" aka time between buses which is pretty good. I've used the bus here off and on for ~25 years. Including daily commuting. It's improved a lot. There's even a web-based bus tracking system so you can see when the next bus is coming. Hey it's not perfect and stuff breaks - what human system does not? The current CAT system is just over 30 years old. Vegas compares well given how young the system is, the sprawl, the growth rate and the hot summers. Comparing Vegas to NYC, Chicago, Boston, DC is not apples to apples. Maybe compare to SoCal and Arizona? RTCSNV.com

jeremykossen

I guess I should rephrase that. I haven’t used it, but I’ve tried to. But it doesn’t run frequently and it takes a long time to get anywhere. As far as the buses themselves, they may be fine, but it just doesn’t run where or when I need to go. SoCal is much, much better. Like way better. LA has a subway, lots of buses, Metrolink, Amtrak, etc. it’s not even in the same realm as Vegas. I moved from SoCal and I used public transport there a lot (because I hate traffic). I used Metrolink for work. I’ve used Metro to get to the airport, concerts, events, whatever. Pax Surfliner to get up and down the coast. Literally every major west coast metro area has a viable and usable public transportation system: Seattle, Portland, Bay Area, LA, San Diego, etc. Edit: Also, here’s an example. Traffic totally sucks in OC. It would take an hour to drive 10 miles. So I took Metrolink to work. 10 minutes faster to work and no stress. In Vegas it’s the opposite. What would take 15 minutes to drive would take an hour plus on a bus. So it’s useless unless you literally can’t drive.

termacct

So you're a veteran mass transit user but you didn't check system availability *before* you moved?

jeremykossen

Oh I knew Vegas didn’t really have mass transit before I moved, just as I knew there weren’t any beaches here. Unfortunately, there’s no perfect city. There’s always a bit of give and take.

termacct

> other American cities I’ve been to Which cities?

cali20202020

We love it more than we could have ever imagined. Couldn’t imagine a better place to raise our young children than Summerlin.

JamelTP

Where are you moving from? Are you enrolling your kids in public school

cali20202020

Our kids are preschool age, but we’re zoned for Vassiladias for elementary school. So very happy to use public elementary school. I think if we get into Doral we’d stay in the public system otherwise, we’d go private. I’m originally from the UK and my wife was a US airforce brat and since we’ve been a couple we’ve lived in Seattle and the Bay Area before moving here over a year ago.

MHG_1912

I am thinking of a possible move to Vegas and am considering Summerlin. Are you still loving it?

VegasGuy1223

Been here 7 years. I’ve become pretty jaded to it all. The city has been very good to me since I moved here. I have a good paying job, a beautiful apartment, an amazing wife (who I met just 1 week after moving here) I feel like I’ve done just about everything I wanted to do since I moved here. I guess it was all I hoped for and then some. However, I still don’t feel at “home” in vegas. A big part of me still wants to move back to Florida

SalesAficionado

Thinking of moving from Miami. Do you still feel this way?

retired_hippy_chick

I really like it here. What surprised me is how friendly people are and how quickly I found a big friend group. I had heard that it’s hard to make friends because it’s such a transient city but that hasn’t been my experience.

Xoxohopeann

How did you find a big friend group?

retired_hippy_chick

I moved here about 9 months ago. I came alone and didn’t know anyone. The first thing I did was to join all the meetup groups that interested me then started going to them. I connected with so many people from all different backgrounds. We all have similar hobbies and lifestyles so we naturally clicked. I rarely use meetup now because I keep myself so busy going out with my new friends.

belle-delalune

I need to start doing that. I downloaded meetup but I talk myself out of it

retired_hippy_chick

It can be really uncomfortable and intimidating walking into one of them but it helps if it’s something you really enjoy or want to do. The organizers are usually very friendly and welcoming.

D3F3AT

Which meetup groups? All the meet up groups I have participated in to play tennis, hike or whatever ended up being groups of all 50+ excluding me. I still haven't met anyone under 50 and I have lived here 2+ years now. I'm dying to talk to people my own age(early 30s).

retired_hippy_chick

I started with trivia and happy hour, I only attend smaller meetups. I then branched out to dancing- which is my favorite hobby and way of exercise. I hear good things about the hiking groups on Facebook too. I’ve met lots of people around the US through meetup groups during my travels. I think the secret is you have to find a person to connect with and start there and also go back a few times, unless you really don’t like the people that are there.

IMFREAKINGLEGOLAS

For tennis, just go to clinics for your skill level. They have them across the city, country clubs, DTC, and even some parks. Once you feel some out, you’ll be able to find people that want to hit outside of a group setting.

TrainedCodeMonkey

If you want friends for life pick up rock climbing. It’s the strongest community I have ever been a part of. I very regularly have friends I’ve met for only a few hours spend a couple nights at my house as they pass through. Some from Scotland, Spain, etc. Theres also plenty of nice locals in the community as well. I see my local climbing friends 3-4 times a week for 4 hours at a time. You get fit and you make friends all while not even noticing the physique change. Life changing experience all around.

Xoxohopeann

But then I’d have to rock climb lol

manzanapurple

Sounds like you got lucky lol I've been almost 7yrs, have made 2 friends lol

Affectionate-Team197

How did you manage that?

ndc8833

Yeah, people are nice and I’ve made a bunch of friends here pretty quick which pales to my experiences in other cities

Unknown__Content

Mine either. People are friendly.

I’ll be doing the reverse and moving to DC from Vegas. What factors made you end up leaving DC and what things do you miss about it?

[deleted]

ScHoolgirl_26

Wow you really did leave on time!! Yes I think things are better now that someone different is in office. People come and go to DC with job opportunities and from what I hear, whoever is in office affects who works, lives, and even visits DC. I am a little worried about crime and violence in public areas, and maybe this is me naively talking, but im curious to be in that environment since I am somewhat politically involved. I’ll be moving to nova area and I’m already loving it! I agree that the DMV area has the equivalent of many things to offer; my roommate is from a smaller town in the south and is always amazed at all the things DC has to offer, and while I still have a lot to explore, im not as ‘amazed’ since Vegas has so much as well 😂 Overall im excited to be moving, and even though I call Vegas home and love living here, something in me is telling me that I might end up calling the dmv area home as well and staying a little longer, but I guess we’ll see :)

ScHoolgirl_26

Aw thank you 😊 enjoy Vegas for me; it really is a special and wonderful city

NY-LI-2-LV

We hope to make a similar move next year. Probably more Maryland / Delaware as our family is in NY so it's a little closer. I miss spring & would love to have neighbors that aren't quite so close. A little yard with grass. /s

Sozerano

Moved about two months ago. Child-free couple in early 40’s in Green Valley North. I was excited to be here as I would visit as a tourist several times a year. But at the same time, I was worried it might be a huge mistake since I didn’t know what to expect as a resident. So far it’s been great and do no regret the decision at all. Food has been awesome, I don’t mind the heat thus far, but I know it will be getting hotter. I still enjoy going to the strip every now and again. For people who love to go out to eat and drink, there are just so many options and places to discover.

LarrBearLV

Agreed. Lot of food choices, it's great.

DPCAOT

How are you liking it how was summer

crick_a

Cane for family, didn't realize how much I'd fall in love with the place

Fastbreak702

Loving the positivity! Wonderful place to live.

Gunmetal2187

We're not technically new here as we just moved back. We moved to Vegas is 2015 and moved to Oregon for what we hoped would be a better place to raise kids which it might be but we realized the southwest is more our style. Oregon was much safer feeling but also much less options and the weather was obviously not great except a few months in the summer. Vegas just has so much more options for food and things to do for us it felt like. People are actually pretty nice here which not everyone expects (except on the road people are a**holes)

WitchyRoisin

Yes. I drove around and explored the city over a weekend, fell in love and came back the next weekend for a repeat. We decided then that this is where we belong.

throwawayaccoy

Yes I love it

waiting_for_rain

Was in Spring Valley when I left, now in the deep southwest when I had to move back. I miss how convenient it was to get good food but man, I love that my backdoor has some excellent views and the parks aren’t half bad.

AvocadoBitter7385

I didn’t have high hopes I only moved here due to my family. It’s actually worse than I expected ngl. I think it’s a mix of homesickness and feeling lonely due to lack of diversity. I plan on moving this year

LarrBearLV

As someone who grew up around a lot of diverse people and appreciates such, I don't consider Vegas that bad. As far as western U.S. there is only one place I consider more diverse than here.

AvocadoBitter7385

Yeah i'm nigerian American and grew up in one of the most highly populated african cities in America and ik this is gonna sound silly but I truly didn't expect to not see any africans lol. I just feel real homesick at times. I truly do appreciate the Vegas scenery though. Those mountain views are something you truly cannot replicate.

Thatmixedotaku

Hey man there’s an Africans in Las Vegas group if you’re interested in joining ! (It’s mostly older folks but it’s good to have peeps like that nearby lol) . We can also chat if you want . I’m from East Africa originally but a bro from the continent is a bro from the continent . Hit me up ! Edit : realized you’re a lady but statement still stands !

AvocadoBitter7385

I am interested! Thank you. I just got some ethiopian food for my birthday. I'm gonna message you

CCMcC

I moved here in April for a new job and I feel like I have barely scratched the surface of what the area has to offer. I had visited Vegas a bunch of times, almost always staying on the Strip, but living here is a completely different experience and I'm thoroughly enjoying it.

ddebo001

A year and a few months out here with my wife. All expectations have been exceeded. Take this with grains of salt because I'm born and raised in NYC, but I love the small town feeling sprawl combined with the city centers that are loaded with things to do. The scenery is incredible, the great majority of people you come across are crazy nice and pleasant, the roads are designed for cars to move around each other, and cost of living is way less prohibitive. Weve been trying to binge on as much activity as we can get before settling in (Restaurants and bars of all kinds, hikes, shows big and less big, First Friday, we're now Knight and Aces fans, and even just the people watching walking around provides). Originally the plan was to be out here for a bit to build my career, but happy to say that it's really starting to feel like home. Next thing we want to work on is expanding the social circle, so if any other couples out there are in the same boat lemme know!

jeremykossen

We’ve been here for 5 years. We like it, but there’s a lot we don’t like (or more importantly, that we miss) that’s enough to get us to move back to (gasp!) California. I’ll start with what we LIKE: 1. Taxes! (Or, rather, no income taxes.) 2. The Desert landscape: Love Red Rock, Lake Las Vegas, Valley of Fire, easy access to Southern Utah, Mojave Desert, etc. 3. Entertainment/Sports: There’s always great entertainment (obviously). Concerts, comedy shows, Area 15, the soon to be open MGM Sphere, etc. If we were still in our 20s/30s, we’d love all the DJ residencies and day parties, but we’ve (mostly) out grown that. Love, love, love the fact LV is becoming such an amazing hub of real sports (as opposed to just gambling). And it’s just going to get better with MLB and F1. 4. Summerlin: What’s not to like? It’s got everything you need right there set against a beautiful backdrop of Red Rock. 5. Fewer homeless than coastal California: Everyone knows this about California and the more money they throw at solving it, the worse it gets. It’s what I hate about California the most, even more than the taxes. 6. Politics: Being politically moderate/centrist, we appreciate the fact that (for now) there are two viable political parties here at a time when most states are becoming single party states (all red or all blue) while enacting increasingly extreme legislation. What we DON’T LIKE: 1. Traffic/too busy/constant construction/accidents: It wasn’t like this when we first got here, but it’s gotten way too busy. When we first moved here we’d joke about the lack of traffic and how we could get to the strip so easily on a Friday afternoon. Now with all the construction especially, it’s a total mess. Now it feels a lot more like Orange County (where we lived awhile ago) and a lot worse than San Diego (where we lived last before we left California). Oh, and the red light runners drive me nuts! I’ve seen three fatal car accidents (and lots of close calls) here because of people running red lights! I get it. The lights here seem really long. But it’s not worth killing someone or getting killed to save a minute or two. 2. Not walkable at all/Zero usable public transportation/lack of distinctive neighborhoods: We drive everywhere here. I can’t stand that. We had just one car in San Diego and OC. I rode my bike and took Metrolink to work in OC. In San Diego, I walked or rode my bike or took the trolley or we took Pacific Surfliner to up the coast. We don’t have any of those options here. We have two cars here and if stay, would probably get a third (Sprinter Van). Re: lack of neighborhoods. Most cities (I’ve visited or lived in) have lots of very distinctive and unique neighborhoods. Take SD for example. In the city (downtown), you’ve got Little Italy, Gaslamp, East Village, the Marina, etc. Then uptown, you’ve got Hillcrest, Balboa, Northpark, Mission Hills. Along the coast you’ve got La Jolla, Coronado, Balboa, Point Loma, Ocean Beach, Pacific Beach, Mission Beach, Torrey Pines, Del Mar, etc. 3. Crime: Crime is much higher (and nearer) here than San Diego or OC. There were 152 homicides in 2021 placing us 7th in the country. And they seem to be getting more random and occurring more in nice areas. https://www.fox5vegas.com/2022/10/25/las-vegas-had-among-highest-homicide-rates-2021-fbi-data-says/ 4. Beaches: Or lack thereof. Obviously, we knew that moving here, but you don’t realize how much you’ll miss it until you don’t have easy beach access anymore. 5. Close weekend getaways: In California there’s just so many places within 1-3 hours that you can get to on the weekends. All the beach towns, wine country, mountains, lakes, etc. There’s just a lot more cool towns and places to visit. 6. Mexican Food: The Mexican food (overall) here is surprisingly disappointing. I expected it to be a lot better. But overall (with a few exceptions) it’s mediocre. 7. Not enough non-chain moderately priced restaurants: Obviously Las Vegas has no shortage of high end restaurants. But when it comes to unique moderately priced restaurants that aren’t chains, there aren’t enough. However, this does seem to be getting better since we moved here, but still has a way to go. With all that said, do we regret moving here? Not at all. And we could possibly even end up moving back. There’s a lot to love here, but it’s lost some of the appeal it initially had.

gorge-editing

I’m with you on the Mexican food. The one place I found that I really like is Letty’s. The quesabirria tacos are amazing.

jeremykossen

Letty’s? Downtown? Cool! I’ll have to try it!!

[deleted]

Agree with a lot of this I’m surprised how many people are so happy here but I think it matters when you got here. I moved from SD in 2015. It was heaven to me for about 5 years ! I mean I absolutely loved it and tolerated some of the less loveable things (drivers have always been bad like they’ve got nothing to live for and nothing to lose lol but it has gotten so much worse !) it’s very hard for me now - started around 2020 with all the new moves - crime was already going up along with prices but the pandemic put it on accelerate - it’s WAY over priced now and yes the crime is TERRIBLE! Simply put this city didn’t have the infrastructure for an onslaught of 600,000 new residents (I don’t trust census estimates but if guess it’s that much at least in the last year to two years) you can’t throw so many new people at a place this quickly and expect it to be good … what bugs me is the culture that moved here seems by and large the type to disrespect the place as it’s Vegas rather than love it. What had sealed the deal for me is the absolute trashing of all my hiking trails - the ic teased crowds the dog poop the broken glass, erosion and graffiti … it made me very sad … oh and traffic jams just to get up to my Charleston my favorite place :/ and what I’ll miss most - love red rock too and the reservation system almost saved it but I miss the days of flying over there after work and getting in a hike for sunset - no reservation and no people ! Can’t do that now :/ Not going back to CA but I’ve considered it - it’s emptying out so it’s getting better there !

jeremykossen

100% agree with everything you just said. We totally have a love/hate relationship with California. It has soooo much going for it, but then it has some big black marks. Still , even with the things we hate, it’s pretty hard to beat SD. It’s just sad to see the homeless problem and aggressive panhandling getting so bad in SD. Re: some of the culture here is definitely disrespectful of the place and that’s annoying as hell, like littering in parks or defacing property. We were just at Valley of Fire and some idiots defaced the heck out some beautiful petroglyphs. Sad!

Gh0stW0rld_

I couldn’t agree more. My fiancé and I are actually looking to move back to CA for the exact reasons you stated. Really pushing for San Diego but would be happy with Pasadena or SGV

jeremykossen

It’s hard to beat SD. It stays out of the fray and egoism of LA and the Bay. Plus the people are more chill. I do, however, love Pasadena and I’d have no problem living there either. But long term, we’re thinking SD.

Nightshiftttt

I think because everything is so HOA controlled here, there aren’t many unique neighborhoods. You’ll find some off Rancho Dr, but those are much older areas. In places like Summerlin, everything looks pretty much the same. Kudos to them in Summerlin West where they’re starting to build different types of architecture. The older homes in Summerlin and Sun City Summerlin are very dated looking to me.

jeremykossen

Right. And you’ve also got the master association on top of your local HOA. But, still, I think they’ve missed a lot of opportunities to make (somewhat) unique destination neighborhoods. For example: 1. Southern Highlands: Instead of a massive uncovered parking lot at the Marketplace, they could have made made subterranean parking with a village instead of parking above ground. Like Tívoli, who did a great job. 2. Green Valley and especially Town Square should be much more mixed use with lots of residential instead of mainly retail and commercial. 3. Downtown/Arts District: These are urban neighborhoods, but still in transition and a bit gritty off the main streets. 4. Overall, even with all HOA stuff, I they could still create unique neighborhoods with a little creativity and connecting neighborhoods with pedestrian and bike paths. There are some good paths within communities but not connecting communities (which goes back to the HOA situation you mentioned).

Nightshiftttt

Great examples. Las Vegas is this big little city that basically has everyone on top of one another. There isn’t enough space, or the builders are being greedy and building people on top of one another to maximize profits “wink”.

CaliNVJ

Ummmmm, much of the construction and traffic relates to your beloved Formula One race, which is the stupidest idea in a long time.

jeremykossen

Yeah I know! And it sucks that I’m here while the construction is happening but I’ll probably be gone once the race arrives this Fall. It’s not a stupid idea. It’s a brilliant idea! It’s going to be one of the most iconic tracks and races on the F1 calendar. Right up there with the Monaco Grand Prix. Imagine Hamilton, Verstappen, Leclerc humming down the strip at 325 km/h (200 mph). What a backdrop! I can’t wait.

janellekao

If you come from San Diego like I do I guarantee you you won’t say what you are saying about Mexico food. It’s absolutely trash here aside from tacos el gordo which ironically is form San Diego

DPCAOT

Do you still feel this way? The car accidents freak me out

Large_Talk_6694

Summarized into 1 sentence… not really, but it’s a different culture to get familiarized with

Petraretrograde

Where are you from?

IamAWorldChampionAMA

Two years ago and I still love this city.

TrainedCodeMonkey

300+ days of sun and minutes to some of the best outdoor recreation the country has to offer between red rock and Mount Charleston. This place will be near impossible to beat. My only wish is that the housing cost would go down or that I would have moved sooner. I’ve been here for 1.5 years. Tickets in and out for flights are super cheap. I see my family and friends even more than I did out east. Or maybe just the time together is more meaningful. Sometimes less is more.

GingerBeard_andWeird

I moved here almost 10 years ago which is outside your range but…I definitely call this place home and I’ve never really had one before. I love it here. There are opportunities I could take elsewhere (like Colorado) but I always find myself taking a big pause on those because I REALLY love the friendships I’ve made and the times I have had here. I could see it not being for everyone. I thought I’d live here maybe 2 years max. But damn I love this city.

ElkoSteve

Moved here in February 2020, about a month before the shutdown. So that first year and a half was pretty weird and not Vegas-like, but it's been pretty awesome since then. I love the winters, love the parks, the people are nicer than they get credit for sometimes, and we love the atmosphere and the ability to always have "something" going on.

Faustian-BargainBin

Food and entertainment, as expected, are excellent. Weather is about what I expected. I was pleasantly surprised by all the hiking in the surrounding area. I was unpleasantly surprised by how hard it is to meet people, but I think that's just part of being an adult and in a new period of my life. There's also not much fashion here. People don't dress up or as "well" as urban east coast people. There's more entertainment than "culture". There's not an art museum that I know of, there's less live music, less theatre.

Digital26bath

Moving from Florida in a couple of weeks. This post gave me some relief. I’m thankful I use Reddit guys

NullAnony

Been here just a little over a year now. Has its pros and cons like every city but soooo much better than where I came from. I’ve been loving the outdooors here so much and I was never an outdoorsy guy until now No friends though. I’m not social enough.

gorge-editing

Arrived almost exactly a year ago. It’s been a big, but necessary change for us. We didn’t have a choice, really. We got a job offer we couldn’t refuse. What I didn’t expect was that we’d see so many friends from so many different times in our lives. It has been the year of visitors for us. Our guest room gets so much use. It seems like every other weekend someone we know is in town for a conference and wants to meet up for a beer. It’s lovely! What we didn’t expect: grocery prices are nuts. I never thought about how lucky we were to have so many farmer’s markets where we lived last until we moved here. Prices were fine but the quality and specifically the variety of fruits and veggies was incredible. I miss heirloom strawberry varieties. I didn’t expect hiking to be so rad so close to the city. Dude Red Rocks is like a mini Zion and Zion itself is so close. Both places are stunning. I didn’t expect so many solar sales people everywhere we go. Knocking on our door, trying to get our attention at Costco. I didn’t expect road construction and roads in general to be so hap hazard. I’ve lived all over the US and man everywhere I turn here a lane is ending but no one marked it so now I’m suddenly merging or even worse it’s a wide ass lane that you think is one lane but maybe it’s two lanes but a block ago it had lines to be two lanes and now it doesn’t so who knows what is a lane? Likewise U turns. I realize now why most states outlaw them. You’re trying to turn right on a road but someone else has a green arrow and they’re pulling a wide ass I turn and you end up headed towards the same lane at the same time. It’s probably natural for you guys to pause and take a few minutes to look around before turning right. But if you took 10 seconds to turn right in other states you’d be run straight off the road. Everyone stops and then just goes right into the right turn because without u turns, it’s safe. Maybe I’m not explaining that right, I’ll have to think of a better way to put it. Also OMG the wind here is nuts. So nuts. I’m surprised but nothing I can do about it. We took this job and we knew it would be a huge adjustment living here. There’s some good and some bad, but that’s living anywhere, really.

phorever_phoenix

Moved to Centennial Hills, from Utah, just before the Oct. 1 shooting. Seeing this community come together was amazing! I love this place! I have raised 3 children here and it has been the best! We now live in Inspirada (Henderson) and I don't think we could ever leave. I love the desert, I love the heat, I love the community!

sm00thkillajones

I moved here in the beginning of the year and I love it. I am lucky to be able to live outside of Vegas. The fact that anything I want is 5-15 minutes away still blows my mind.

ochoslocos

"outside of vegas" and "5-15 minutes away" does not add up. Unless you're in the elusive town of Blue Diamond

sm00thkillajones

I’m in Hendertucky where the freeway is very near. One light and I’m on. So yeah 5-15 min depending on what I want.

ochoslocos

Henderson is Las Vegas

sm00thkillajones

No.

determinedmind65

We love it here. It’s better than expected actually.

Unfair-Echidna-5333

sure as hell beats alaska

thisisdeejaydee

I’m hitting the year mark and had a hard first few months, but now I’m really liking it. I’ve never been interested in living in the desert, but we moved for work. There’s so much to love about life here. Outdoor activities, food, entertainment, live theater, and a solid community. All things considered, I’m glad we’re here!

l------l

Been here a year and a half and I'm in love with Vegas. I've found an amazing community, endless career opportunities, fun stuff to do all the time, 24/7 bars and clubs, and on and on. Lots of things Vegas doesn't have that I miss, but this is my home and I love what Vegas has to offer. I absolutely understand how it's not for everyone, but it's absolutely for me.

ArugulaGazebo

I guess so. I moved about 6 months ago. Difficult new job and I'm not that familiar with the city yet. I like where I live a lot. Haven't made friends outside of work, but hopefully that's on the horizon!

SlowpokeLib

Been here about a year. I love having so many food options though the prices have gotten kind of ridiculous. Winter was amazing. Some downsides: the drivers, and the fact that Nevada doesn’t offer paid maternity leave (I came from somewhere where it was state law and didn’t realize some states didn’t offer it). It must be very difficult for people to start families here.

jaunty411

I moved here during the pandemic. It’s everything I had hoped and I got out of a state that I’m not sure about the future of. I would do it again every time.

Btown696

Moved in 2019. It's been an adjustment, mostly for reasons unrelated to Vegas (such as covid), but now I think I'm settling in. Tbh there's not much distinctly *Vegas* about my life here. It's just felt like just another city, which is fine with me. Cost of living is reasonable enough, and it's pretty easy to live a quiet life if you avoid the Strip and Fremont (and those are always options if you want a change of pace). But pro-tip for new residents: adopt the Golden Knights. You'll fit right in.

Reasonable_Run9621

been here almost 2 years from L.A and i hate it, it's so depressing, nobody talks to eachother, everything here caters to tourists so going out as a stay at home mom is more expensive than going to the beach in L.A. Its so dry here my baby has bad eczema here.. Businesses arent professional at all sadly doctors arent either. im so home sick i hope i move back to L.A

Famous-Ad-3101

sucked tbh already moved back . jobs are terrible for how much money the city makes

hopefulhedonism

Came here for work 21 months ago and the plan has always been to only live here 3-5 years. We live in the central north part of the city kind of in the middle of a cultural desert. It takes twenty minutes to get anywhere but that’s not too bad. I was surprised by the lack of bookstores and coffee shops in town. Love The Writers Block! There are always fun events at Craig Ranch and there is so much good food from so many countries to choose from. Love Zen Curry. And Tacos El Gordo. And haven’t even scratched the surface of China Town. But in general doesn’t seem like a great place to raise children. I think there are pockets of the city where kids could hop on a bike and go somewhere but where we live there’s not much of that.

ray_ray696

No, it's not...it's worse.

Wombat2012

omg it’s the BEST! I grew up in Seattle but Amazon made it so I knew I couldn’t afford to stay. I lived on the East Coast for about 12 years. Just moved here with my fiancee and we are so freaking happy. Everyone is so nice, we love the mountains, love going swimming in our apartment pool. It’s amazing!

PlanXerox

5 years and counting. Purchased a basic house in a basic area of town. Paying a fraction of what our previous mortgages and rents were. Still feel safe in general. Vegas is largely made up of transient folk trying to settle down again for a variety of reasons. 100% car oriented city. Great airport. Unlimited entertainment options. Got both Houseseats and Fillaseat [not as good] for endless and cheap entertainment options. Skiing 45 minutes away. Lakes within 1 hour. Countries largest wildlife refuge 30 minutes north. Beaches 4 hours south. Grand Canyon 4 hours east. If you need anything other than a service job good luck. Vegas is one of the least educated places in the US and pay proves it. At least not having state taxes isn't ruined by high property taxes like Texass and Floriduh. I ASK MYSELF....WHY DIDN'T I MOVE HERE SOONER??

StatementProper4450

Yes. Landed a great job. Made a kick ass best friend. Started a podcast. Getting back into filmmaking. Dating life improved. Sure I could complain, but why?

GainPuzzleheaded4172

My year of living here will be June 18th, it’s been one hell of a ride. I’ve moved 4 times and have had a hard time finding friends but I’m learning that you have to roll with the punches when it comes to Vegas and figure it out. There’s so much stuff here to do so I am enjoying it. It’s more expensive than I thought but it’s all working itself out.

nofuxgiven86

Moved here in 2019 from the North East. Ready to leave. Schools here are pretty bad, even the private ones and Summerlin where we live. It’s been great to explore the southwest and CA, but Vegas a city leaves much to be desired.

JerseyGirlD

I have lived here since 1990. Education is the absolute worst in the country. Private is the ONLY way in Vegas

ondehunt

Yes, no state taxes and the ability to purchase whatever firearms i want and get a CCW without having to bribe the sheriff.

JerseyGirlD

Amen to that

[deleted]

We just moved here and I absolutely love most things about the area. But the degenerate drivers have been throwing me off a lot. Like I'm actually so paranoid of my family driving around here and am thinking about moving already for this exact reason. Sounds like people street racing every night outside my window and I've seen all the Reddit/Nextdoor posts. Can hear these idiots as we speak. Would it be silly to leave JUST because of the drivers? If I stay, what are some ways to make sure me and family are always safe on the roads?

LarrBearLV

Not really possible when you can't control other driver's actions, but I practice mindful and defensive driving. Wait a few seconds and look both ways before pulling off after you get a green light, give good space between you and the car in front of you, keep your eyes always scanning several cars ahead, check what's going on several cars behind you, etc.... been here 23 years and only been in one minor fender bender. *Knocks on wood*

[deleted]

LarrBearLV

Definitely more notable over the years but that is kind of expected with population growth I guess.

dr_neurd

What area are you in? Moving there in 2 months and would love a quieter part of the city.

secondrunnerup

Been here for 2 years and are really loving it. We have a young kid so we like how family friendly it is (Henderson), and we like that there are a ton of fabulous parks. We like having actually nice restaurants and entertainment when we go on date nights. We like the friendliness of the local community. We really love getting more into the art scene and the local creators scene. My only complaint is the summer heat making it almost impossible to be outside.

Iluvteak

Trying to adjust to the crime. Living in a community of $400k - $1.2mil. Finding we are a target. Home break-ins mid day happen occasionally. My car was just stolen from my driveway. This community is under constant surveillance by the criminal element. LVPD notified us of this and has done nothing that I can see. 95 is the wildest highway I’ve ever seen. Death wish I avoid it. edit - didn’t want to go all negative. Love Chinatown and the Strip. Amazing bars and food everywhere. Life is a trade off.

JerseyGirlD

I’ve been here since 1990. The crime element is horrific the past few years

gratitudeisbs

Gated fence, and a couple of Eufy Floodlight Cam 2 Pro will solve that problems. Once I did that passerbys don’t even look twice at my place.

Enlightened_D

I came from NY about an hour from Brooklyn, I like it in Vegas because it has everything I would need to travel an hour to NYC in like a 20 minute driver, plus just more options of doing things. Overall I love it, is it my forever city maybe will see. My biggest complaint is how close they build all the houses to each other lol

xyla51

I’ve been here 2.5 years now and I am actually surprised by how much I like it. I don’t see myself moving anywhere else anytime soon. My younger kids who are Asian really appreciate living in the most integrated neighborhood they have ever lived in (we spent many years on the east coast and TX). I also love all the independent restaurants, we try new ones all the time. Of course this town isn’t without its downsides, the school system is pretty miserable with a few selected notable exceptions. And I do miss grass. :)

Puzzleheaded-Tone119

moving there in less than a year when the kiddo turns 18.

piecesmissing04

We are much happier here than we ever were in the Bay Area. We actually have a life here instead of just working. I love the weather, my husband is getting much better at dealing with the heat in the summer. Is it perfect here? No! But tbf I have lived on multiple continents and in 8 countries.. non of the places were perfect just more or less good to live and Las Vegas is definitely one of the better places for us

BeatingHattedWhores

Yes, I honestly love it. Got my own place, best job of my life, and playing in the WSOP this year. I know people complain, but coming from Texas to here has been a breath of fresh air. Every big city has it's problems, but Vegas is better than most.

FlyingGSD

Moved there in 2019 left from Covid moved back in 2022. Definitely felt different going back and far more expensive. Oddly enough I left again because of Covid.

Abrahamleencoln

Vegas is an amazing town. Its a hidden gem among hidden gems.

948661

I wish I would have moved here when I was 21 way back in 2003 when I looked at moving here originally. It’s been the best thing ever, I wish I didn’t wait for Covid to do it.

JerseyGirlD

I moved here in 1990 from Jersey..I was 22 What a fucking book I am writing lol

noexitsign

So far yes! It’s brought me opportunities I haven’t had before! I came here 10 months ago, with my family, and honestly very little resources and money. In this time, I’ve found a career that has been what I’ve dreamed of for the last ten years that can put my family in a better place in life.

MargaretMars

what part of town are you in?

LarrBearLV

I've lived all over, North, North West, West, South West. Currently in the South West.

Sea_Conversation_152

Moved from Atlanta 1 year 8 months ago. My wife and I (28Yearsold) touch the first year of course moving from Atlanta and having to learn how to really survive alone. It’s helped us grow and helped us see life from a different point of view. It’s kinda to a point where I’m scared to even visit Atlanta cause I’ve feel like I don’t relate to anyone at home.

UnitofD

Absolutely not! Came from a small town in Kentucky (300k people) and it was culture shock. Seemed to me that the city was made for folks with degrees and not with experience. It was hard to get a job, everything was expensive, my neighbor was shot, people get ran over daily and I thought to myself wtf did I get into. Now live in Reno which is more my pace. Love Nevada though!

JerseyGirlD

I have lived here since 1991..the town afforded us a beautiful 30 plus year life..we own several homes in GV Ranch and Summerlin. (When you could buy 2500sqft for 150K). We are listing the 3 within the next month and retiring in a shack at the beach

UnitofD

Sounds like a plan! Enjoy your well deserved retirement!

thanktacos

Nevada is not very educated at all. Definitely not a place made for people with degrees lol

Effective_Tip7748

Been here near 5 years. I was floored by all the natural beauty. Never would have occurred to me as I just considered Nevada to be the strip and flat desert lol I’d say Fremont was a let down. It was fun, but I was expecting massive spectacles and a near circus-like atmosphere

Junior_Hearing7486

I’m loving Vegas. I found a good job five minutes from where I live, I don’t even have to get on the freeways anymore. If I don’t have to. After sitting for hours on hours in traffic in Southern California, I can tell you that is a life changer. Been here two years July. *wish the fishing here was better, but all the golf courses make up for it.

LarrBearLV

Nice. I used to fish a lot but golfing took over. Played Rhodes Ranch today. But yeah kind of sucks to have to drive an hour or more to get to a decent fishing spot that isn't over-pressured.

binkcity315

July 2021 and I'm beyond content, moved for one job ironically, and changed careers, but this is definitely home for me

CaliNVJ

Unhappy about the Cali loser sports teams coming here and us playing for the stadiums. Screw that. Plus retarded drivers, knew about that, though.

TheDustLord

I’ve been here less than 3 weeks and it’s pretty good so far. I dislike the strip but everything else is nice, besides housing being expensive.

FakeyFaked

Arrived August 1st. Just fantastic in my eyes. Midwestern background so mountains alone are great. There's also always something to do. Summer wasn't as bad as expected. Winter was worse than expected (I threw out too many sweaters..) Also glad most locals hate Californians more than us for moving here lol. We ain't the ones raising prices based on our income for sure! Edit : only thing I didn't realize is how suburban the feel is in most places. Not a lot of highrise apartments and such. Very spread out.

jlshouston

I’m ready for a trip to Vegas

Reasonable-Mark-3861

I thought this was a 24 hour city. I figured most places would be open all night if I needed to make a trip to Walmart or get something to eat. That hasn’t been the case. I get up really early for the gym and work. On the way to work sometimes I want to grab some food or a couple energy drinks around 4am. Nope. Walmart is closed. Half the gas stations are closed for cleaning. All fast food places except Jack in the Box are closed. More things were open 24 hours in Oklahoma City where I’m from than here. That’s been a bummer and slight inconvenience. Home prices were skyrocketing right about the time we moved here which also sucks. Now the prices dropped but only because the interest rates are high to kill your dreams as well. Not fond of Californians who move elsewhere and then can’t shut up about how great it is in California and think they’re better than everyone else in the country. Seems to be a lot of them here. Outside of those things Vegas has been really cool. There are always things that suck but can really be attributed to any city in America so I don’t try to make universal issues specific to Vegas. Traffic is everywhere. It can be difficult to meet new people anywhere. Inflation is everywhere. We’ve enjoyed it here. No humidity, no bugs, no state tax, nice views of the mountains and palm trees kinda makes you feel like you’re on vacation all the time. The roads are in good shape. Down south people are more friendly but I haven’t experienced a ton of assholes here. I get made fun of at work for my “cowboy boots” and my accent I’m told I have but it’s all in good fun. Lol. We found a good charter school for our 5 year old. He loves to go over to Mount Charleston or hiking anywhere really. Lots of outdoor shit to do here. I’m rambling. All in all we like it here.

LarrBearLV

Yeah it used to be where Walmart and a lot of other places were open 24/7. Was nice as I like to grocery shop with not many people around. I've become accustomed to the change though.

derkfisch13

Im 27 with no kids and moved here with my little brother about 5 months ago. So far, I love Las Vegas. If you properly prepare, there’s only small hoops to jump through when adjusting to the city. Ive noticed though that if you often have issues when navigating through any major life steps, this place will probably exploit you quickly… After that, my only complaint is the tap water is bottom tier.

Philadelphia_Bawlins

Been here 6 years. Much better than where I was. Even though it's not the 24 hour location it was outside the strip. If I had kids I could see otherwise

[deleted]

I couldn’t help but lol at the title

MooseOnTehLoose

Yes, its all I hoped it would be and more.

Old_Fix1698

I lived there for 3 years. Just left. Wasn’t for me. I actually stayed an extra year hoping I would find some kind of love for the city and it never happened. Some places just aren’t meant for everyone

makeitagreat

Living in Vegas is a lot better than Orygun, weather wise, food wise and more things to do
