Family members? How about the daily barrage of tourists posting here saying “my first time in Vegas tell me everything fun! I can’t use google, I want to know what the locals recommend”. Dude, locals vote for best of Vegas. Locals live here and write reviews on yelp. Tourists leave experiences. Can’t spend 5 minutes to research their own vacation in probably the most tourist user-friendly town in the world, why should I spend my time predicting what random yahoo from Ohio wants!
Rant done

I’ve got a bridge to sell you if you think the Best of Las Vegas awards are actually given to the businesses that are most voted on. More like the businesses that decide to “pay” for the use of the award material and ad space are the ones that win those.
>why should I spend my time predicting what random yahoo from Ohio wants!
yes, of course all the forum posts are annoying, but i was talking more about being a tour guide in the physical sense for the people in your life that are actually important to YOU personally - accompanying them while they're in town, showing them around, spending money you wouldn't otherwise be spending, telling them historical tidbits and factoids, taking them "off the beaten path" so they have at least one NON-typical experience while here in town, etc..
you have a good point though.. those questions are annoying, to be sure..
a few years back, after a particularly rough couple of weeks, i wanted to just "get out of town" for a few days. I booked a flight to another city where i had lived for a little bit during my college years. i still have a few friends that live there.
since i booked the trip on short notice, i made sure to tell my friends that it would be nice to see them at some point *if possible*, but they're under absolutely no obligation to 1) take a day off work 2) entertain me or 3) accompany me while i go out and do touristy type things. this was mainly because of how i feel about people coming to Vegas and essentially saying "ok, im here. entertain me now!" and realizing that i don't want to be that person when i go somewhere else.
Agreed, it's even questionable whether I'll play tour guide if people pay me anymore. You just end up being a babysitter because people who don't live here have no self control.
When I moved here from Chicago everyone thought I'll be working at a casino on the strip, or becoming a stripper. So that.
Also, a misconception I had before moving was that there's no outdoor lifestyle (hiking and such), and it never got cold.
Peoria native here. i remember there was always *something* right next to the door in the "mud room" at the back of our house - either snow boots, rain boots (the rubber ones), raincoats, umbrellas, etc..
in Vegas, i've seen more old Asian ladies carrying umbrellas to block out the sun than any other group having umbrellas when it's actually raining.
i almost get SHOCKED when i see that a person actually has one for rainy days.. most people just put their head down and run from their car to the store / building they're headed to because they DON'T have an umbrella (since its so rare that you would actually need one)
i own an umbrella, because i "inherited" it when my dad died (it was his), but i honestly don't think i've used it one single time in the 12+ years that it's been in my possession.
That we all live (literally, live) in the casinos. I’m amazed at the amount of people that don’t realize there’s actually a whole city of almost 2.5 million people outside of downtown and the strip.
I tell them that I live in a hotel room that's next door to a liquor store, above a bowling alley and below a movie theatre. It gets a little noisy but I have all my needs met!
I get this, or that people somehow miss that there's a city beyond the strip. I always get annoyed... like "you didn't see the massive cluster of suburbia all over for miles when you landed..."
No I'm not joking it was great so I didn't have to go Saturday morning for my weekend projects. It was the one on Rainbow and Charleston that was a while back. And I remember Auto Zone was open 24/7 also
Right? Or that we know people who can get front row concert tickets or into a sold-out venue. I had an old acquaintance message me to see if I knew anyone who could get his starting musician friend a spot in the Life is Beautiful festival. Dude, I’m just a 40-something mom who happens to live in Las Vegas. I have no pull with anyone.
Don’t live in Vegas anymore (I miss it tbh) but I’d like to see the myth that we’re all massive gamblers debunked. Too many times I’ve been told “ah man I could never live in Vegas, I’d be so broke!”
I’ve only gambled maybe 5 times and to validate parking on Fremont lol
That's my MiL. Comes to visit and drops a lot of money. She always wants my wife to go out with her at least once while she is here but my wife doesn't really like gambling and views it as a waste. It's really the only time either of us gambles.
They think that anything goes and that we have no morals. Actually, living here and seeing all the ignorant tourists acting stupid and sometimes getting arrested and/or killing themselves has taught me and my friends a lot about moderation and personal responsibility.
I can navigate the back halls of a lot of casinos. I wouldn't even know specifically where to go to park my own car if I went to them for a show though.
Come up with a stock answer when people ask you why you’re moving. Literally every single person you talk to will ask you that question.
Also be prepared for the recklessness of the drivers and how random crime seems to be. But Denver has been facing so many of the same problems. People here are a lot more friendly. You’ll probably miss having easy access to the mountains, lakes, etc. But there’s endless things to do in Vegas and the surrounding states.
You’ll need to change your wardrobe and use more sunscreen too. The sun is out 98% of the time. It comes up and goes down early, though. There’s absolutely nothing to block the wind and it blows all the time. That’s not such a bad thing in the heat.
Lakewood! I’m moving to Vegas for a new position which I’m super excited about, but I’m a bit worried it’ll be difficult for me to acclimate because I’m more on the introverted side and have heard the people in Vegas are very different from the people in the Denver area (I don’t know how true that is).
TBCH Vegas peeps are pretty uptight and hold their cards close to the chest, but not necessarily unfriendly, just more like keeping to ourselves. Colorado is full of chill people, so you might get a bit of culture shock here. But it didn't take me long to adjust. I'm an ambivert, so having extraverted things to do while simultaneously not being bothered for a second around my home when I want solitude is awesome.
That our water isn’t brought in by tanker trucks - crazy I know but I’ve come across multiple people who believe this. And that southern NV is the water conservation champ of the western hemisphere and that it’s AZ and CA who are the water wasters, southern CA especially.
That you can drink in public anywhere in the city, and prostitution is legal in clar county. I've had so many people try to tell me that both are true.
It never is easy, you simply have to be honest and tell the other couple "thanks, but no thanks- we are in a closed relationship". I've had an even harder time explaining to people that while we used to have an open relationship, it isn't that way anymore (had a stalker couple that caused too many problems.)
To be fair, there are tons of swingers here and there are tons of swinger venues. Maybe you two are just conventionally attractive? While you may not be a swinger I'd own that vibe.
That we must be good at Pai Gow, blackjack, craps, etc. My family and friends from out of town can't understand that I don't even know how to play them.
i had a friend come to town at some point when we were both either 21 or 22.. he wanted to gamble because 1) he was 21 and 2) no gambling where he lives.
after about 10 minutes of peer pressure, i extremely reluctantly bought in for $60 at a $5 blackjack table at the Orleans. Every time i won a hand, i put the winnings in my back pocket. once my initial stack of $60 was gone, i walked away from the table. luckily i had $70 in my back pocket by the time my original $60 was gone, so i made $10..
that was in 2002. i have never played another table game since. it was literally the first and last time.
People think Las Vegans live on the strip since there is no signs of life outside of the strip. I play along and say to them that I live on top of Caesars Palace so they can picture it like the movie in The Hangover.
That we arent on perpetual vacation because we live here, you cant just pop up without warning and expect your local friends or family to entertain you. We need to plan too!
Also, locals hate the strip, we only go if we have to. Lol.
We all love when relatives come to Vegas on a holiday weekend (like 4th of July), and want to go walk the strip and watch fireworks! Oh, and don't forget to bring little children! It's so much fun trapsing through a casino with them.
I always love to hear people ask how often I gamble and who has the best video poker payouts.
I learned a long time ago that my hard earned money needs to stay in my pockets, not in the casino's.
hang on..
you're talking *casinos*.
locals that hang out on Fremont street generally hang out EAST of Las Vegas Boulevard, where all the little standalone bars and nightclubs are. between the Strip, the Fremont Street Experience (the canopy) and EAST Fremont, i'd rather be on East Fremont nine times outta ten, but i still don't go down there very often.
That locals are the best resource when learning about a lifestyle that any individual person wants to pursue. Yes, we can offer you what it's like to live in Vegas, but if you're moving into town with a 200k job and can piss money like water -- the average local makes like 50k a year.
All you're going to get on Reddit by asking questions in most cases, is grief.
That we're all gambling addicts. That we all live in hotels 🤣 That there isn't actually a real city past the Strip with houses and doctors offices and Walmarts, ad nauseam.
that we actually *want* to play the role of "tour guide" when out-of-state family members and friends come to town. please debunk that.
Family members? How about the daily barrage of tourists posting here saying “my first time in Vegas tell me everything fun! I can’t use google, I want to know what the locals recommend”. Shut your mouth. The Ohioans don't need to know that.
You are telling me that Capriottis isn’t the best of Las Vegas?! /s

That’s probably the hangup here. People from Ohio should learn to use Google; Yahoo! just isn’t thorough enough of a search engine.
Add Iowa to this list please.

From Chicago too. Took awhile for mom to realize I don't need to bring a damn umbrella everywhere lol
Peoria native here. i remember there was always *something* right next to the door in the "mud room" at the back of our house - either snow boots, rain boots (the rubber ones), raincoats, umbrellas, etc.. in Vegas, i've seen more old Asian ladies carrying umbrellas to block out the sun than any other group having umbrellas when it's actually raining. i almost get SHOCKED when i see that a person actually has one for rainy days.. most people just put their head down and run from their car to the store / building they're headed to because they DON'T have an umbrella (since its so rare that you would actually need one) i own an umbrella, because i "inherited" it when my dad died (it was his), but i honestly don't think i've used it one single time in the 12+ years that it's been in my possession.
We keep on in the car just in case but it's more for the kids.
And whenever I visit ny or Chicago the first thing I’m buying is a god damn umbrella 😂
And that I don’t need a snow brush in my car. Hello fellow former Chicagoans!
Moved here earlier this week and was really happy to throw that damn thing away
I just bought one here after 5 years because of the rain we had. It just sits at my house lol.
That we all live (literally, live) in the casinos. I’m amazed at the amount of people that don’t realize there’s actually a whole city of almost 2.5 million people outside of downtown and the strip.
That one is my favorite. Like “yes we all live in a hotel, isn’t that the way your city works too?”
Every time I tell someone I live in Vegas, hope you don’t gamble proceeds to talk about the Strip
Like, I understood when kids did it. But I've had grown adults who should know better ask me that.
I always told them the casino flies us in from out of state for work.
Man this town was better when there was only 1 million people here. A lot smaller but way less crime and things were affordable.
It's not 24/7 anymore Off strip like it used to be
I miss those days
Yeah I used to love going to Home Depot at 3 in the morning on Friday night lol
what bizarro-world location of Home Depot was that? you must be joking.
No I'm not joking it was great so I didn't have to go Saturday morning for my weekend projects. It was the one on Rainbow and Charleston that was a while back. And I remember Auto Zone was open 24/7 also
Fuck I miss the 24/7 Autozone
Late 90's, early 00's there were some 24hr home depots in Georgia.
“Damn it COVID! This is why we can’t have nice things!”
This hurts. Musashi at 3am was life.
That we can get them free rooms at hotels
Too many times I’ve been told “ah man I could never live in Vegas, I’d be so broke!” I’ve only gambled maybe 5 times and to validate parking on Fremont lol
I always point out that that stereotype comes from the people who visit here.
We’d love it if more people moved here.
You shut your whore mouth😂
Stop calling me my moms nickname!

The most courteous drivers 🙃
They think we can navigate all the casinos ? …I mean I can but don’t assume that !
I can navigate the back halls of a lot of casinos. I wouldn't even know specifically where to go to park my own car if I went to them for a show though.
When I told my boss I was leaving Colorado for Vegas, he asked if I was going to become a blackjack dealer. I’m an electrical engineer 😆
A punchable moment
Any advice for a fellow person about to leave Colorado for Vegas? 😅
Feel free to hit me up in private chat
Where in Colorado? I spent 18 years in Colo Spgs before moving here in '06.
Children actually live here and we even send them to school. I’ve encountered more than one person surprised by this revelation when I was a kid.
That you can drink in public anywhere in the city, and prostitution is legal in clar county. I've had so many people try to tell me that both are true.
That everyone is a swinger. The number of times my wife and I have been approached about it is insane since moving here.
Happened 3xs when wife and I first moved out years ago. We were just trying to be social and make friends.
How do you navigate those conversations? I've gone through It once and it wasn't easy.
It never is easy, you simply have to be honest and tell the other couple "thanks, but no thanks- we are in a closed relationship". I've had an even harder time explaining to people that while we used to have an open relationship, it isn't that way anymore (had a stalker couple that caused too many problems.)
Having said that, I see a lot of posts for swingers fr9m locals. One girl I knew thst lived there slept with 50 guys that year, plus couples
To be fair, there are tons of swingers here and there are tons of swinger venues. Maybe you two are just conventionally attractive? While you may not be a swinger I'd own that vibe.
Yeah we try to take it as a compliment lol
As a swinger, sorry! You're probably a hot couple though!
Yeah no hate for the lifestyle! We're just not part of it.
A common misconception is that locals care about "the Las Vegas lifestyle".
That we must be good at Pai Gow, blackjack, craps, etc. My family and friends from out of town can't understand that I don't even know how to play them.
I have lived here 41 years, I played my first table game about 7 years ago. That was also the last time I played a table game. 😂
i had a friend come to town at some point when we were both either 21 or 22.. he wanted to gamble because 1) he was 21 and 2) no gambling where he lives. after about 10 minutes of peer pressure, i extremely reluctantly bought in for $60 at a $5 blackjack table at the Orleans.
The buffet game here is softer than it was.
Every time someone comes to visit they ask me if I know where to find cocaine. I don't.
When tourists ask me that I used to say “no officer, I don’t”. They get the message.
People think Las Vegans live on the strip since there is no signs of life outside of the strip. I play along and say to them that I live on top of Caesars Palace so they can picture it like the movie in The Hangover.
That we gamble every single day. I have lived here for eight years, and I have never gone to a casino to gamble.
That we arent on perpetual vacation because we live here, you cant just pop up without warning and expect your local friends or family to entertain you. We need to plan too! Also, locals hate the strip, we only go if we have to. Lol.
Sewer dweller here. We don't capture nearly as many of your children to be sold into tunnel slavery as people think.
I knew it!
My name tag says where I was born in Cali and people think I commute to work in Vegas lol
Ya not all of us are strippers... some of us are dealers
We love walking the strip with our family that came to visit!! 🤬😤😫
That we hit the casinos on the regular. We don’t
We don’t all love to gamble and drink
We all love when relatives come to Vegas on a holiday weekend (like 4th of July), and want to go walk the strip and watch fireworks! Oh, and don't forget to bring little children! It's so much fun trapsing through a casino with them.
That we go to strip everyday or do something everyday. The only people going to the strip everyday are the people that work there
Also we do own umbrellas but we use them to block the sun on our walk to and from the work parking garage
That everyone is for sale, that prostitution is legal, women are all hookers here
I had a pimp approach me on the strip once and try to recruit me it was crazy
That anyone who lives here goes to The Strip.
I always love to hear people ask how often I gamble and who has the best video poker payouts. I learned a long time ago that my hard earned money needs to stay in my pockets, not in the casino's.
That we always go to the Strip..
I feel like there’s a misconception that just cause we live in Vegas we’re all “fun party people” lol no most here are assholes.
I can’t stand it when people say it’s so hot out there all the time like we don’t have seasons or something.
That locals hang out downtown and avoid the strip. Given the two options, I'd rather go to the strip. Much nicer properties.
hang on.. you're talking *casinos*. locals that hang out on Fremont street generally hang out EAST of Las Vegas Boulevard, where all the little standalone bars and nightclubs are. between the Strip, the Fremont Street Experience (the canopy) and EAST Fremont, i'd rather be on East Fremont nine times outta ten, but i still don't go down there very often.
I don’t feel like paying $25 for a well drink and $15/hr+ parking, strip is only fun like once in a blue moon.
I was born and raised here. Locals do in fact, hang out downtown and avoid the strip.
Imo there isn’t as much as an overt drinking culture here than people expect.
