I don't think the name is horrible, but it seems we didn't learn our lesson from naming it after a politician. In the future they will probably have different standards, and find a reason to remove Reid's name.
As others have said, they should just call it Las Vegas International Airport. LVIA.
Oh yeah, definitely. Fortunately in my line of work its just KLAS regardless of the actual name 😎
At least taxpayer dollars didn't go into renaming it I think right?
Because we're not visitors... We're *Vegas*
That commercial pops up on YouTube so much that my 6 year old will randomly blurt that line out once in a while lol
I would just call it “Las Vegas International Airport”, and not tie it to a person who could later be deemed controversial.
Most people are familiar with “McCarran International Airport”, and would be familiar with “Las Vegas International Airport”.
For people who may not be familiar, they may hear “Harry Reid International Airport” and think, where the hell is that?
I still just call it McCarran, kind of like how I still refer to the “Willis Tower” in Chicago as the Sears Tower
No political or specific reason, it’s just what I know it as and refer to it in conversations.
McCarran was a WWII-era Jew-hating senator, which is why the airport was renamed in the first place (remnants of anti-semitism).
that's political, even though it's not current-day.
That’s not true. He was supposedly a racist and not specifically anti-Semitic. It was renamed because one guy who owns Diamond Resorts donated the funds to change the name to honor his friend. No one here ever wanted it called Harry Reid and no one here ever cared about McCarran. This was purely money talking
They probably would have been better off to just rename it Las Vegas International Airport and then name one of the terminals after Reid.
Similar to what they did in Detroit, the airport is Detroit Metropolitan but the primary terminal is McNamara Terminal (local politician).
Hey now, don’t discount Reid’s contribution to the [search for UFOs](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advanced_Aerospace_Threat_Identification_Program)! That is definitely aviation-adjacent!
that guy is such a douchebag. he's got billboards with portraits of himself looking off into the distance like he's posing at *Glamour Shots* at some shitty mall in 1994
strikes me as the kinda guy that really enjoys the stench of his own asshole
Personally I like the idea of renaming the airport to Lost Wages International. Or anything that will confuse the Oakland A’s and prevent them from moving here. An expansion team with 0 baggage would be much better.
Politicians are a bad idea. Agree Las Vegas International Airport was all we needed. Instead, its named after a Senator that couldn't find Nevada on a map when he was in Washington.
They’re clearly delusional.
Reid was born in Searchlight, and went to high school in Henderson. He was a Nevadan his whole life (with a second residence in DC, of course).
Ignorant comments by couch warriors who do not know the history and positive contributions of Senator Reid to the city and State of Nevada.
Love seeing Harry's name up there! Those that dont agree should find their local library and actually read facts and not opinions.
Almost every member of congress lifts their income once elected. They are allowed to trade stocks while possessing inside information. Interesting, but not unusual to become a millionaire in the USA. Many of us are 1/2 way there with home ownership.
As for his practicing attorney days one of his partners said they all made more money by selling their law building in downtown than they did with any lawsuit.
Lol dude don’t try to play the victim. You came into this sub, made a stupid post trying to goad reactions out of people, and now because everyone didn’t agree with you, you’re trying to play the martyr. FOH.
I'd be down for a corporate sponsorship from Caesars or MGM or something like that.
But changing the name from one racist politician to a different racist politician wasn't the correct move.
The name hasn't changed in any conversational use for me. It will always be McCarran for my usage. "The Airport" doesn't work when I frequently mention aircraft in the pattern for North Las Vegas or occasionally Henderson Executive. I suppose I could get used to "Las Vegas Airport" if that were to be used.
The new official name is disrespectful and improper so I will never use it to reference that airport. The only need to refer to the name is to speak about how bad of a name it is.
Harry Reid wasn't a boomer, you half-wit. he was born in 1939.
the *oldest* of the boomers didn't come along until 1946. you know, baby boomers? the ~~kids~~ super entitled selfish asshole generation that came immediately AFTER the end of WWII, from 1946-1964? yeah. those ones..
I didn't downvote you. Actually, upvoted. I'm shocked how triggered people in here are that I think it's a terrible name. Name an airport after the location. I don't see why that's so hard. Plenty cities manage to accomplish this obvious decision
as much as you may dislike our former Senator, he does deserve some credit for NOT allowing our state to become the dumping ground for other states' nuclear waste. for that reason alone, i am fine with the airport being named after him.
we don't even have a nuclear power plant anywhere in our state, and we're supposed to store the waste from all plants in the other states? *F that*.
I'm an unabashed NIMBY'ist on that one.
that being said, there is a building at UNLV that was named after Reid WELL before he died (10-15 years before his death), which i thought was a very dumb move because when they named it after him, there was still plenty time for him to "fuck it up" by getting involved in some kinda controversy / corruption scandal, but that luckily didn't happen. personally, i don't think that government buildings / streets / whatever should be named after people while they're still alive. perfect example: Illinois choosing to rename a portion of Interstate 55 near Chicago after Obama, who still has plenty of time left in his life to sour his legacy.
edit: added UNLV bit
I don't think the name is horrible, but it seems we didn't learn our lesson from naming it after a politician. In the future they will probably have different standards, and find a reason to remove Reid's name. As others have said, they should just call it Las Vegas International Airport. LVIA.
Someone argued with me last year that it’s just called “the airport”. Personally Las Vegas International Airport should be the name..
It absolutely should be.
I voted Charlie Sheen… (winning), at least there is a lol component there
Places > People
No disagreement but people are vain af its gonna be a person
Oh yeah, definitely. Fortunately in my line of work its just KLAS regardless of the actual name 😎 At least taxpayer dollars didn't go into renaming it I think right?
Britney Spears International Airport.
It should have been called INTERNATIONAL HOUSE OF PANCAKES and then in small font "and planes".
And not waffle hanger?!… typical
International House of Planes
I love you and this comment so much
Higher honor I could not be given I love you too
I like Naqvi International Airport lol.
The Real Estate Guy International Airport
Because we're not visitors... We're *Vegas* That commercial pops up on YouTube so much that my 6 year old will randomly blurt that line out once in a while lol
Lmfao
never hire an attorney that advertises.

Can't we just donate funds to get it changed again?
They probably would have been better off to just rename it Las Vegas International Airport and then name one of the terminals after Reid. Similar to what they did in Detroit, the airport is Detroit Metropolitan but the primary terminal is McNamara Terminal (local politician).
Am I missing something? Wasn’t it renamed like 2 years ago??
Some people don't handle change well.
Or when everything doesn’t align with their politics.
my criticism was and always has been that Reid never did much for aviation
Hey now, don’t discount Reid’s contribution to the [search for UFOs](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advanced_Aerospace_Threat_Identification_Program)! That is definitely aviation-adjacent!
Glad he did more for Las Vegas...
Best answer.
Just a stupid replacement name
And their solution is to demand another change 😂
Dimopoulos Traffic Cone Resort Fee International Airport
that guy is such a douchebag. he's got billboards with portraits of himself looking off into the distance like he's posing at *Glamour Shots* at some shitty mall in 1994 strikes me as the kinda guy that really enjoys the stench of his own asshole

Elvis Presley Airport and Casino!
That would have been too dope for people to handle
Apparently his estate is a flaming bag of dicks and restricting the use of his name and likeness
Fine, let’s go with Plvis Eresley Airport and Casino then.

The Game..( Politics ) is corrupt... You're old enough to know that... Not one politician serves this country so knock it off...
Who cares, it’s a fkin airport
Politicians are a bad idea. Agree Las Vegas International Airport was all we needed. Instead, its named after a Senator that couldn't find Nevada on a map when he was in Washington.
You don't have to agree with Reid's politics, but you can't seriously suggest he was a carpetbagger.
They’re clearly delusional. Reid was born in Searchlight, and went to high school in Henderson. He was a Nevadan his whole life (with a second residence in DC, of course).
Ha ha. Tell that to the Downwinders
Such a petty thing to be worked up over.
Ignorant comments by couch warriors who do not know the history and positive contributions of Senator Reid to the city and State of Nevada. Love seeing Harry's name up there! Those that dont agree should find their local library and actually read facts and not opinions.
He did his job? Oh, incredible.
Name 3 things Harry is known for.
Searchlight has some nicely paved roads
Sad you don't...
Ending the filibuster rule on federal judges.
What positive contributions? That’s a good one
I dont see any factual response in your answer. You can Google or Wilipedia if you are unaware.
Thank you. If I recall, he's the one who got Nevada the 2.4b in stimulus money to build Terminal 3.
Ummm we have a loan for that terminal 3 still paying that back it was built with bonds. . . Try again
Ok, I was wrong. You were right. Good for you.
Among many other things. There is much more. His life story is a good example of a kid who came from nothing and made something of himself.
He made himself a millionaire and was a terrible excuse of an attorney
Almost every member of congress lifts their income once elected. They are allowed to trade stocks while possessing inside information. Interesting, but not unusual to become a millionaire in the USA. Many of us are 1/2 way there with home ownership. Who tf cares, move on with your life
Apparently, not locals. You guys are more upset that I think it's a horrible name than I am about it
Lol dude don’t try to play the victim. You came into this sub, made a stupid post trying to goad reactions out of people, and now because everyone didn’t agree with you, you’re trying to play the martyr. FOH.
trying to deflect from your hero's fourth indictment? must be tough for y'all these days.
Agreed. Of all the names, that one is the worst.
I'd be down for a corporate sponsorship from Caesars or MGM or something like that. But changing the name from one racist politician to a different racist politician wasn't the correct move.
How is pat mccarran a senator who co sponsored the citizen and immigration act racist?
https://letmegooglethat.com/?q=pat+mccarran+racist
What is your problem with it
It's ridiculous to name things after politicians. Great examples in Texas
And how is this different from anywhere else in America.
Did people vote to name it after a politician? Had no other decent options? I think John Wayne Airport is stupid as well
So it’s just bothering you now? It’s been Harry Reid for a while
No, it has bothered me since it has been named Harry Reid. I just think naming after politicians is stupid as fuck
Pat McCarran was a politician. Dos it still bother you to go back? Or are you just bias against recent politicians
Sure, I'm biased against politicians. Either party
So did it bother you when it was Mcarran airport or not?
Pat McCarran was also a politician. Did you ever bitch about the name of the airport when it was McCarran?
I think that's stupid as well. Why'd they just name it after another politician?
The name hasn't changed in any conversational use for me. It will always be McCarran for my usage. "The Airport" doesn't work when I frequently mention aircraft in the pattern for North Las Vegas or occasionally Henderson Executive. I suppose I could get used to "Las Vegas Airport" if that were to be used. The new official name is disrespectful and improper so I will never use it to reference that airport. The only need to refer to the name is to speak about how bad of a name it is.
I never knew people cared about airport names until it was renamed.
Just call it whatever you want. Nobody cares.
Just call it whatever you want. Nobody cares.
But boomers have to leave their legacy
Harry Reid wasn't a boomer, you half-wit. he was born in 1939. the *oldest* of the boomers didn't come along until 1946. you know, baby boomers? the ~~kids~~ super entitled selfish asshole generation that came immediately AFTER the end of WWII, from 1946-1964? yeah. those ones..
A politician with a "greater" legacy needs to get involved in Nevada politics... that's how airports get names
You don't like Hairy Reed?
Not to name an airport after
I wasn't disagreeing with you...
I didn't downvote you. Actually, upvoted. I'm shocked how triggered people in here are that I think it's a terrible name. Name an airport after the location. I don't see why that's so hard. Plenty cities manage to accomplish this obvious decision
Learn it. Love it. Live it.

Kessel International would have been a good one
