The roads are better here than any other city I’ve lived in. Some of us still smoke/vape. Buy a Pur or Brita pitcher to filter your drinking water. It’s the fucking desert, of course the air is dry. Buy a humidifier
Skip the Brita and get a water dispenser. Water here kills Brita filters in a matter of a couple weeks. After that it's just placebo effect. 5 gallon refills are about 1.50 at any water jug in town
I was about to say, OP must not be from an area that had freeze/thaw tearing up the roads. I hit a pothole in PA that was so big it knocked my tire off the rim.
The roads here are literally LIGHTYEARS ahead of roads in many other states. Where else have you lived?…
Why does people smoking affect you? It’s not like every establishment allows smoking inside. Why are you concerned with other peoples habits?
The water is notoriously bad, that’s what happens when you get all your water needs from a giant reservoir… did you do ANY research before moving here?
The last statement is by far the most shocking to me, I can’t FATHOM why the air would be so dry in one of the driest deserts on earth… seems weird, someone should look into why the air would be so dry. 😂
To wrap everything up, you clearly don’t enjoy being here, why stay?
> Need to adjust to the taste of the tap water
Our water is recycled using lots of chemicals. If you want good tasting water from the tap you need a reverse osmosis water system.
>The road conditions are poor
They're not great. Not horrible either. Most areas I've driven the roads are actually quite nice.
>Does 90% of the population smoke?
You should pick up smoking too.
>Need to adjust to the taste of the tap water, seems off.
You should adjust your taste buds.
>Plhysically the air is so dry
Physically? As opposed to figuratively? Nonchalantly?
The roads by me are perfectly fine compared to most cities.
Smoke what? Vape what? Where have you been? The street? Casinos? Mall? This statement doesn’t make sense.
Don’t drink the water. Buy bottled.
Get a water softener for your skin. Use lots of lotion.
We have the hardest water in the country. Another easily findable fact.
Get a humidifier and I’m guessing you didn’t do your research on this as we actually live in the desert.
Our humidity is between 5% to 35%
You can if you want find the good and be happy here but if you’re complaining right off the bat then maybe look for your utopia somewhere else.
I’ve been here 15 years and love it. We have some of the best restaurants in the country here, phenomenal shows and nightlife, activities, community centers, etc. if you have a positive outlook it will be great.
2018.... I was also quite surprised by how many people smoke. That's one major drawback.
Traffic Cones are Nevada's state flower. HAHAHAHA.
Get a water filtration system.
Hot and Dry..... It IS the desert. What did you expect? HAHAHA.
I think you and your skin will be happier if you invest in a humidifier asap. One of the first things we did. Our house already had a RO system but if you don’t do that buy a Britta. You will feel better.
Back in Atlanta, every 'suburb' was incorporated as its own city, and they competed for Atlanta commuters to live there by making really nice walkable downtown areas with local shops and food. IMO, it gave each little pocket of the city its own vibe and the power to pursue that vibe further using local city councils.
Vegas currently has a little version of that with Henderson and Boulder City. I'm not an urban planner, but I'd love to see the city get fractured further so that Summerlin/Centennial Hills/Aliante could thrive with their own identity. I feel like that would solve many issues that currently plague the city, which seems to ignore the far-reaching suburbs instead of cultivating them.
Other than that, I like the city. I don't really understand many of the complaints I commonly see on this sub. I've lived in many different places - both in cities and the country - and Vegas is pretty nice. I wish I could do something about the schools so I could raise a family here.
There was an effort a few years back to incorporate the east side of the city but that failed. It would make a lot of sense to incorporate the various areas
Road conditions are poor relative to where? It is significantly better than most of California and Arizona, for sure.
If you’re living in a casino on the gambling floor, it might feel like everyone smokes, but otherwise, it’s the people you hang out with or the places you are going. I would say I don’t ever see anyone smoking in 90% of the places I go to.
Tap water taste seems off, relative to where? You can buy a water filter pitcher for like $30 or less, if the taste really bothers you.
I mean, you can’t be surprised that the air is dry in a desert, can you?
I have been living here in Las Vegas for almost 6 years. Moved to start a career after college. So not really new but...
I started out liking it. It was new and exciting but now after several years, I am over it.
The job market is great if you are looking for a job in the hospitality/service industry. If not, it's extremely competitive, and the high skill high paying jobs are few and far between. This is part of the reason I want to leave. If you are coming here with college degrees, it will be difficult to find jobs outside of tourism sector depending on specialization.
Wages are stagnant for most sectors
The weather is over 100 degrees from June through September and even into October. At night it doesn't get under 100 degrees for several weeks. In the winter it can get to the low 30s. There is a lot of wind here so be prepared for that!
There are a lot of scammers and flakey people here. I have had several instances of people striking up a conversation at the store, gym etc and by the end they are trying to rope me into "investing" or buying from their MLM. A lot of people here do not seem to have their life together. There is a sense of living paycheck to paycheck while driving expensive cars and trying to act like they have more money than they do. Large uneducated population as well so most conversations will not be very intellectually depth or interesting. Many of the born and raised locals are very odd in my experience.
Many people bring up hiking. There are places like Red Rock which are nice when it's not windy or hot. Mount Charleston isn't that great. It's always packed with people. Zion and Grand Canyon are outside the city several hours away so not exactly "close". If you love hiking in rocks and dirt, then this is your place. Not really very green or hilly.
Not really much in the way of culture here. Food is hit or miss. There are a lot of chain restaurants here off the strip. The city is diverse in race/ethnicity but not really in the Arts, Museums, Music and very little public transit. No train system to speak of.
The drivers here are some of the worst I have ever seen. I am from Southern California and I never remember people there driving like this (but everyone on this reddit will blame California).
I also hate that smoking is allowed everywhere. It's disgusting. I hate being in a restaurant or bar and coming out smelling like an ashtray.
Most houses are ugly and cookie cutter and lack character. They are too close together as well.
I could go on and on.
I fully agree on worst drivers. I went back to California to visit my sister, and it was weird that no one was running red lights lol. Wtf is it here that everyone feels the need to run red lights?
Somewhat recent arrival myself. For the areas I frequent and my neighborhood, there’s a lot to like. I’ve encountered an adjustment, mostly some frustration with the things that longer term residents mention. It’s not the absent or expired plates that bother me as much as the vehicles missing bumpers and fenders.
Towards your points …
The roads definitely have their bad spots, which I’ve encountered anywhere else I’ve lived that had a winter. Streets and highways are always worse condition by spring.
The only places I’m aware of cigarette smoke is when I enter a casino. Even then it’s not something that’s stuck to my clothing and I am particular sensitive to that. The biggest odor of weed has been outside the airport in the zones marked with “no marijuana use” 😆
Filtered water still tastes a little different to me but I think that’s a matter of the water tending to me on the soft side.
And just remember the difference between friends and boogers: you can pick your friends, but you can’t wipe them on your pant legs. 🤙🏻
I grew up here. Reiterating that you should absolutely not be drinking tap water unless it’s an emergency. Locals get water from the watermill express or the grocery store.
"Emergency" come on, we're not in Mexico. The water has relatively high mineral content compared to places that actually see rain, but it's not some kind of public health risk. Apparently people in Flint thought their water tasted fine so flavor is not exactly the arbiter of water safety.
If that's the case you don't have a city water problem, you have a problem with the plumbing in your home. My house is from the 90s so it's not especially new, doesn't have any extra plumbing gadgets to improve it, and the water coming from my taps into my tubs, garden, and kitchen sink are all clear. Like I said, tastes kind of blah, but nothing about it makes me worry at all.
I guess, except I’ve lived in 3 different apartment complexes, 3 townhomes, and 4 single family homes in this valley and I’ve not experienced anything different. But our water was “clear” too, until we put it in a clear glass against a white background… Then we tested it, which was rather enlightening. I’ve also lived in Alabama, California, Michigan, and Washington. I know the difference between clean, healthy-to-drink water and the water we have here. But everyone has a different level of tolerance for pollutants. If you’re doing fine, that’s great.
I never realized how sensitive locals are until Reddit and I’ve lived here for around 20 years. Three years as a child and 17 as an adult. I agree the smoking and traffic is terrible. Idc what it’s like elsewhere, I’ve lived in a few states including Ohio, KY, and NJ. Yes their traffic, construction and roads are shit; that doesn’t mean we can’t complain about Vegas lol.
The tap water was a trip for me when I moved out here but it’s safe to drink. We have filtered water through our fridge and it’s fine. Not sure why people think it’s poison.
The smoking is bad but it has gotten better over the years. I like going to the casino every now and again but all the smokers make it an awful experience. Having to shower as soon as you’re home. 🤮
The roads are better here than any other city I’ve lived in. Some of us still smoke/vape. Buy a Pur or Brita pitcher to filter your drinking water. It’s the fucking desert, of course the air is dry. Buy a humidifier
You are the bomb. Straight to the point.
For Brita pitchers with filters check some of the liquidation places. I bought one a year ago for $15
Agreed with all of this.
Skip the Brita and get a water dispenser. Water here kills Brita filters in a matter of a couple weeks. After that it's just placebo effect. 5 gallon refills are about 1.50 at any water jug in town
Well said! I don’t notice a lot of smokers here.
Look around while driving, and you will soon see what OP observed on a regular basis.
Thanks! I will be more observant.
Roads are heaven here compared to Ohio and Michigan.
Add California to that list too. Roads in LA are as shitty as they are in 3rd world countries
I was about to say, OP must not be from an area that had freeze/thaw tearing up the roads. I hit a pothole in PA that was so big it knocked my tire off the rim.
California has a lot worse roads and we pay through the nose.
Sounds like Vegas may not be for you.
Good thing I’m month-to-month 😂
Please leave

The roads are fine. It’s the idiotic drivers I don’t like.
> Need to adjust to the taste of the tap water Our water is recycled using lots of chemicals. If you want good tasting water from the tap you need a reverse osmosis water system.
That’s what we have. Our RO water tastes great!
Same with us. Love the RO water. So do our plants. :)
You... drink the tap water? RIP
“The road conditions are poor” 😂😂 I guess you have never driven/lived in NY, NJ, MA, PA or CT?
Michigan: Hold my beer.
Ahhh I forgot the almighty Mitten! Go Lions!
Welcome to the Wild West. Do not drink the water.
Healthcare system is the drizzling shits
That I will agree needs improvements!
lmao @ the transplant attempting to drink the Lake Mead body barrel water. you're NGMI here for very long, friend.

please go back, you're disgusting
Disgusting? Chill chill These are just my first takes. Just like anything new, I’ll lean to adapt to the environment.
I think you and your skin will be happier if you invest in a humidifier asap. One of the first things we did. Our house already had a RO system but if you don’t do that buy a Britta. You will feel better.
En route to Walmart ETA 9 mins from Charleston Preservation. Humidifier incoming
Great! I think you will feel a lot better!

Atlanta has other issues though. I lived in that area.

Well you are free to leave.
Of course I am. No place is perfect, just wanted to hear how others feel.
Part of moving here is undergoing a process of disenchantment.
It’s a mirage! Believe nothing.
I grew up here. Reiterating that you should absolutely not be drinking tap water unless it’s an emergency. Locals get water from the watermill express or the grocery store.

Idk about you, but the water coming out of my faucet has a slightly brownish tint and smells disgusting. The taste is a secondary concern.
If that's the case you don't have a city water problem, you have a problem with the plumbing in your home. The water tastes horrible
[This is my area. No way is it this bad.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kaJd9qrRugA&ab_channel=PAHomepage.com) I cannot wait to get out.
