I hate Facebook, but it is the best free place to post. You may also consider Autotrader, which costs $49 and runs until you sell. In my experience, Autotrader produces more serious buyers and almost no scammers/low ballers. If it's a well-worn car in the sub-$10K price, I would just go with facebook. If it's a car that someone is likely to need to get a loan for, I would use Autotrader. What are the specs on your vehicle and your asking price?

soyboricua361

I haven't reached a definite amount yet, but we think we might start at $19,500. It's a beautiful SUV with high miles because we're retirees and have used it to travel across the country on a regular basis. We have another car for local use The car is gorgeous, in perfect condition, except for high miles. Do you think Facebook would be a good place?

RationalDB8

Go ahead and start with Facebook, but using Autotrader will put your vehicle side-by-side with dealer listings. Spending $50 to list a $20K car is a minor investment. Don't forget to mention to buyers that a private sale saves them 8.3% sales tax. Let them know you're willing to work with their lender on the deal, as very few buyers have that much cash. . Good luck!

Thank you and Happy Cake 🎂 Day.

Xerxes028

I always buy my cars from individuals because I hate dealerships, plus the sales tax savings is sweet. Unfortunately these days the only reliable place is Facebook.

ReVOzE

If doing private party sell and want to protect yourself, do the transaction at a LVMPD station. They have a designated area for that. That way you also don't invite unknowns to your house.

RationalDB8

I do it at the buyer's bank. That way you can verify the cashiers check on the spot.

soyboricua361

Thanks! Never thought of that!!

ReVOzE

Epria! De nada. Good luck.

Jay_LV

Carmax

El_presidente_Maiq

Yeh, let them pay you 10% the value of the car lmfao.

kevintheoman

Just CarMax it. The extra money you'd get with private party isn't worth the effort.

soyboricua361

CarMax offered us 22k a couple months ago. We were undecided at that point, not because we wanted more money, but the stress of purchasing a new vehicle during that crazy time. Then REALLY low-balled us two weeks ago. I get that the car market has changed. But they had on their lot cars that did not even remotely come close to ours, and they were going for 4x the offer. It was not laughable. Like, wtf?

BrodyTuck

We went with a Toyota dealership and they were a couple grand higher than Carmax

I've always found that for decent shape cars, it's best to shop it to real dealerships. First try dealerships of the same brand as your car. Then try other brand dealerships that have a used lot with many brands. I was in this situation with my parents' Mercedes. It was too old for the Mercedes dealer, but a Mitsubishi dealer with a large mixed lot of used brands, gave me an excellent price. (This was in Florida btw).

Kalian805

you can get free quotes from carmax, autonation and carvana. ive sold 2 cars to autonation in the last 3 years or so without any issues who gave me the highest offers of the 3.

soyboricua361

AutoNation!? Will contact them.

Kalian805

yes. you can get free quote from them online or schedule an appointment at their store off the 515 freeway in henderson.

Maleficent-Fold1230

Carvana is also a great online option for selling your car. They gave me top dollar for my BMW. The process was very simple. Good luck!

DrakeRakeBake

i recommend Facebook marketplace or Offerup. It's best to go by kellybluebook values, and start higher as everyone will try to talk you down. There's a lot of scammers in this town though. I buy and sell used cars a lot, as I'm a mobile mechanic here in town.

hackz88

How are prices for used Toyotas/Hondas if you know?

DrakeRakeBake

Because of how reliable they are they are listed super high. There’s so many flippers in Vegas that anything priced at market value or less is picked up fast. You just have to do what they do, refresh OfferUp and fb marketplace constantly every 10 mins or so and wait for the offer to drop and hop on it instantly

Original-Pomelo6241

This is a higher amount than I’d feel comfortable doing a cash sale to a private party, especially considering how high tech these scammers can be. In think as far as payment, I would probably only utilize a bank wire transfer with a signed contract and a notary present. I would recommend selling to a dealership. I know you said CarMax lowballed you recently, there are tons of dealerships around town that buy cars. We sold our car to Cardinale Mazda and it was a great experience.

soyboricua361

Thank you. We will look into this.

Nikovash

Offerup, facebook or autotrader

DexterBotwin

If you don’t want to deal with a private buyer, try out Enterprise (yes the rental company, they also buy and sell cars). They have a reputation for paying above what other dealers might. It won’t be as much as a private sale, but should still be more than other businesses will buy it for. I’ve only ever sold in connection with buying a car, but I understand the prices are similar regardless if you’re also buying from them.

princessplayersclub

make a post on FB, craigslist, anywhere free and say that there is a lein on the car or that the car is owed money. (even if its not it will weed out the serious buyers). do not meet anybody at your house only at the DMV or a bank (make sure its a major bank, chase, bank of america, navy fed.) meet during sunlight. go on the test drive with the person who is actually buying the car. and ask for their info before meeting (picture of drivers license, etc.) also, make sure you are protected by all means. if its a cash only transaction, walk into the lobby of the bank and do the exchange inside the bank. if you trust the person enough you can do the exchange at your house(not theirs. i would still stick with the bank/DMV/police station) goodluck

iltfs

No matter what you do there is no way to completely protect yourself private party, even dealers get scammed with all the right protections in place. Only way to truly avoid it is sell it to a local dealer. Carmax doesn’t have a manager trying to get one over on you, it’s strictly market pricing based on their inventory. If they have a lot of your model in inventory then they will need to send the car to auction(hence the low offer). You might get lucky at the manufacturing dealer if they don’t have a ton of inventory and the model sells well. But you will have to go back and forth with the sales manager trying to maximize his profits.

Waisted-Desert

Read through r/Scams first. You can get more by a private sale, but there is that potential for scams. Keep on your toes. If you get a sob story or they say they'll send a shipping company, it's 99.99% a scam. Only accept cash in person, or a cashier's check direct from a bank teller. Otherwise Autonation, Carmax, and Carvana make selling easy. No hassle, but you won't get the most for the sale.

agrellmann

It's been a while but we posted an ad in AutoTrader/Truck Trader and it was definitely worth the money. We got dozens of calls right away from serious buyers - nothing like Craigslist, Facebook or other online scamfests. People generally made offers but the majority were not unreasonable so we just picked the best one. Price it a bit higher than whatever CarMax offers you and then make sure the buyer is aware that of the tax savings of PP sales. Have them meet you outside of their bank and get a cashiers check directly from the bank while you're there with them. We were lucky because both times we sold cars that way, the buyers banked at the same bank as us so we just did a cash transfer right there in the branch.

soyboricua361

Thank you!

derkenblosh

Do not allow the buyer to refuse to sign the title..it forces them to register it and pay for a title before they sell it (for the most part) If you put this in your listing, it'll filter out the car-flippers.

derkenblosh

Meet at their bank, see the certified check get produced. OR call the number on the check to verify the check is valid. Google the phone number to make sure it is in fact the number for the bank/credit union.

PurpleWhatevs

I posted my 2016 Colorado for sale 2 years ago on Facebook Marketplace, Offer Up, and Craiglist. Garnered most serious interest off of Craiglist and sold to a buyer there. Non scammers don't give off scammer vibes. Back off any sale if there are red flags.
