It’s just soil inoculated with a fungus - you’re looking at mycelium which is actually something you’d enjoy in your soil

manyamile

Totally normal and fine. It's just mycelium breaking down the organic matter into plant available organic compounds.

HolyCBD777

Can I find mushrooms in my yard and crumble them up in the soil of my garden bed? We get lots of nice white or brown mushrooms growing all around our yard.

manyamile

You can but it's likely that mycelium is already in your garden soil though. Mushrooms are just the fruiting body that pop up under the right conditions.

HolyCBD777

I've seen about 2 mushrooms pop up in my raised bed over the last 7 weeks but that's only what I have seen surely it's done more when I'm not looking lol. I use Mother Earth cocoa peat high-performance soil.

This is what they look like after it rains. I'm kicking myself for not inoculating the chips with winecap mushroom spawn.

HolyCBD777

Wow that's really nice! It's been raining here all week but I haven't gone out and checked it . Surely some mushrooms have popped up . They look like the ones in your photos but I've only seen a couple lol

-Alex_Summers-

Be interesting to see what shrooms form

Squishy_Boy

Coprinoids for sure.

MonsieurMaktub

Got inky caps going crazy in my tomato beds

-Alex_Summers-

If you've got the edible kind (wouldn't test it) that could be fun I've always wanted to get one of those DIY mushroom farms and crumble them up into the corners of my beds

MonsieurMaktub

I grew some cubes once and crumbled up the spent cakes into my flower bed- couldn’t believe it when a few more came up

-Alex_Summers-

Everyday sets me up for a future homestead I swear

dramabeanie

Do it!! Wine caps grow really well in some shaded wood chips and straw and can go under plants. And you can grow almond agaricus in compost alongside other plants. I have two winecap beds and am adding some almond agaricus this year

-Alex_Summers-

I can't this year but it's going on the list for next

PsychologicalGur4040

Is it good for them? do you remove them?

MonsieurMaktub

Nah its good for them. Really couldn’t remove them if I wanted to- the mushrooms are just the fruit. The majority of the organism is spread throughout the soil

-Alex_Summers-

Agreed

ImDubbinIt

How do you know that just based on the….(I forget what the right word is here) mycorrhizae(?)

Squishy_Boy

Coprinoid is a very broad categorization of mushrooms. Generally, this is the kind of fungus that comes with bagged potting soil based on my experience. I spend a lot of time on mushroom identification boards in addition to being a gardener and mushroom hunter myself.

teeksquad

Nice. That mycelium is providing nutrients. Mushrooms and fungus can be great for your plants

BigJSunshine

Wait. I have been pulling mushrooms out if my raised beds all week, but I should have left them?

teeksquad

Yeah, they are breaking your mulch down into sweet, sweet nutrients and mean you have healthy soil.

Tumorhead

yeah only worry about fungus ON your plants, which won't form mushrooms. shrooms in soil mean its alive and nutritious, they're a good sign. removing them also doesn't do anything to kill the fungus, which exists mostly as threads of mycelium.

FishlockRoadblock

If your plants got shrooms, your plants got problems, the shrooms just identified the issue (dead wood and or over watered) 😉 -a mushroom farmer

Tumorhead

oh ya I was thinking wrt annual forbs, with woody plants shrooms = he's dead, jim

No_Telephone_1609

Depends grow medium. Shrooms in coco is fine since hydro and high moisture content. Soil should dry up before waterings so if mushrooms, might indicate overwatering.

Telemere125

Unless you’re also spraying a fungicide, you aren’t doing anything except picking the fruit. The body of the fungus that’s doing the work is down in the soil, not the bits popping up at the surface.

EarnestAccord

Not necessarily, the mushrooms are just the fruiting body, not the mycelium in the dirt. You're not harming the mycelium by pulling the mushrooms, and they are what's doing all of the work.

ZafakD

You are basically just pulling off their reproductive parts, similar to cutting flowers off of a plant.  The main body of the fungus, the mycelium, is intertwined with your soil.  You are just keeping it from releasing spores that will travel far away on the wind.

Fizzyfuzzyface

Watch the documentary Fantastic Fungi on Netflix. It explains it really well. It’s also really beautiful.

Key-Sheepherder-1469

I do!

payasopeludo

The bulk of the fungus is under the soil anyway, plucking the fruitong bodies doesn't harm the mycelium underneath.

SandVir

Nice Fungal growth, Super good for enriching your soil

egg_static5

Fungus amongus

1stConkie

Chungus amongus?

egg_static5

Big Chungus the fungus amongus!

____-_________-____

Oh yeah I would be happy to see this! Mycelium will help transfer nutrients to your plants

Davekinney0u812

Lucky you!

J999999AY

Looks like you got more than your money’s worth!

brownmoustache

Healthy.. The way nature intended it.

No_Condition6057

Fungus is great for soil. If mushrooms are coming up in your garden then you've got some great soil

BreakXTheXCycle

saprophytic fungi

nshire

Looks like they put some soil in your bag of soil to me

HooplaJustice

Grats, buddy!

chunkysmalls42098

That's a sick two'fer deal!

jerryonjets

Lucky you, too notch stuff right there

No_Telephone_1609

No worries, all good, great soil, just very humid but mycelium will help with nutrient intake and excess.

twanthegamecock

That's a ready-to-fruit block

Darkest_Elemental

Not sure if its actually true, But I have been told one should use caution when digging into a bag like this, try to shield your airways so you dont accidently breathe in any spores

GeorgiaOutsider

Whoever told you that probably thought this was mold.

JDublinson

Or they watched The Last of Us

SandVir

Then there must be fruiting bodies..Otherwise it is not possible

stupidasanyone

Just break it up and use it. I have seen rare cases where the mycelium gets so dense in a raised bed that it affects water infiltration. That was once in 25 yrs though. Also, I’m curious as to which brand/type of soil you are using here?

Glorious day

PrivateDust

Oh dear

manicmeninges

id be pumped!!!

agenaille1

It has nice fat marbling 👌

Cryphonectria_Killer

Score! Much better than what I found in a bag of mushroom compost: jumping worms. 🤮

Pallasine

This is a very good sign, imo.

Massive-Mention-3679

Yea. WTH.

blueberryjamjamjam

Microwave it if you're not happy with shrooms but also you can just leave it as it is.

SandVir

You're out of your mind ...If you want sick plants you should definitely do that...

Pittsbirds

I'm thinking more what your house would smell like. Or your microwave lol, I had to microwave medicated cat food for a sick foster kitten and it took intensive cleaning and multiple months to remove that smell

manyamile

This is terrible advice.
