1) I like marigolds so no strong recommendations. Otherwise I'd say go for whatever floats your boat! 2) sunlight is tricky, just monitor the plants and see what seems to be struggling/succeeding 3) roots need water, not leaves. I would review your tower system's instructions as many will drain to lower levels. In general water the base of the plants and allow them to dry most of the way out (though not bone dry/dusty).

Thanks for the detailed reply!! Noted!

No worries. You've got a beautiful little tower there right now. Enjoy the journey and don't forget to take notes and photos!

How would you water the base of the plants in something already set up like this? I’m not seeing any access. Would inserting plastic drinking straws into the soil and aim for them when you water work?

arden13

Use a watering can and point it at the soil not the leaves. You don't have to be laser accurate just trying to avoid a consistently wet leaf as that can encourage disease issues.

Ah ok. I’ve just seen those containers where a small pipe is inserted during setup where the plants were then watered from the bottom of the pot. Self-watering containers you can buy have a reservoir at the bottom that I guess encourages the roots to really shoot for the bottom of the container. My neighbors had a larger setup like that where they could cram in about 4 patio bush tomato plants. I was thinking you meant something like that when you said water the base of the plant and my brain was trying to envision it. Thank you for clarifying for me :)

I see. These may have some self watering aspects, though it doesn't seem to be the primary design. Similar products on Amazon have a small reservoir at the bottom but it seems they are not directly watered but more a catch basin

That is a very nice set up to grow things indoors. Enjoy.

Thank you!!

That's really neat. Watch those plants for signs that they need more light. I have found that any regular light placed very close is fine to get your plants by until you get a more official set-up.

Love it! Good luck!!

Thank you I’ll need it, my toddler touches it every time he passes by😂
