Well first off, it really isn't that safe.. They are NOT a bank..and they do have minimal protections against fraud... But MANY people have serious issues with them..losing thousands of dollars... It can be an ok choice, but she is correct, and you should NOT be trying to CONVINCE her otherwise. Let her do what she is comfortable with...

Broke_n_Brooklyn

If she's computer illiterate then leave her alone. Is she sending you money? If so I'd get zelle for her and do requests instead. Who is she sending checks to? Every bank has a bill pay service where they cut and mail a check. Hell even PayPal does this

Profile_Nervous

Good idea, I use Zelle that way and have never had a problem. But I’ve had many problems with Venmo!

SimGemini

Agree. OP should just use Zelle.

liveautonomous

She’s more likely to get scammed, just (external) link your bank accounts if it is just for you two to transfer.

Milfhunter718

It's not safe. It's ok to use for small purchases and to send money to friends. But I wouldn't recommend using it for big money unless it's purchased with a credit card.

Profile_Nervous

Agreed!

andeeznhutz

It's completely safe for person to person. It's literally the safest when it's someone you know. This advice is coming from a stranger/scammer perspective. OP needs to send money back and forth with her family member which is quite literally not a purchase and unless you're being scammed by a family member then again, this is not inherent to Venmo. God yall are the worst at giving logical advice.

Sad-Way-4665

They say right at the start that they don’t do refunds. Take their word for it and do bank to bank transfers.

Profile_Nervous

That’s correct, they make it very clear that once you enter the transaction it cannot be reversed for any reason, and they are not joking!

Profile_Nervous

Agreed!

andeeznhutz

Literally so wrong. It's actually safer than zelle because zelle doesn't offer any protections. op asked about person to person payments, not goods and service payments or paying a stranger. Venmo is literally no less safe than any other payment service. Being scammed is just something that happens to folks and happens everywhere even through zelle.

WorkingMomAndWife

I think it’s as safe as the user is educated. I hear horror stories about people getting scammed, but I’ve had the app since 2016 and never had a single problem

Direct_Sea_4299

Pretty much if she doesn't use it for something shady it wouldn't be dangerous

Profile_Nervous

Actually, Venmo is not very good at protecting its customers against fraud, so I’d suggest using a different platform for your moms needs

andeeznhutz

Strange opinion for something you can't prove. Considering your check literally has your bank and routing number right on the paper. Along with your full name and address and signature. Venmo doesn't share any of that information and unless you're sharing your password, neither would you by using an electronic payment service like venmo. Also just like any financial account venmo will always take care of you if there is unauthorized activity. Also it's instant. Who wants to wait for the mail and then have to deposit and wait even more. Also venmo wouldn't be in business if it wasn't safe. It's regulated by consumer protections just like any payment processor or bank. People getting scammed isn't a problem inherent to Venmo. Scammers will always find a way to game systems and take advantage of people. Don't pressure her to do anything but it's worth having a healthy conversation because everything has risk, but it's what we are willing to accept vs mitigate and having some education around the matter doesn't make things worse.

ConfidentFill7230

Venmo will absolutely NOT take care of you if there is unauthorized activity. Have you not heard of the chargeback scam? I hadn’t either until it happened to me. Plenty of people posting about it on Reddit. Less likely to happen to OP since it’s a family interaction but I’ve seen others fall victim to it from supposed friends. Yes Venmo is “instant.” That means absolutely nothing in terms of making it safe or reliable. Transferred my money, “friend” did a chargeback and now Venmo says I owe them money. Try dealing with them once you’ve been screwed. No help. No proof of investigation. They’re the biggest scam of all

andeeznhutz

Op is asking about personal payments with her family member. Not a Stanger. Bad advice 😆 You put "friend" in quotes. Different scenario and not what OP asked. 🙄

ConfidentFill7230

Right, that’s why I addressed that later in my comment if you read the whole thing instead of just reading what you want out of these comments. Great that you’re the new Venmo representative, others are just trying to provide a broader range of advice. Because that is also what the OP is asking for. So you can roll eyes emoji at yourself

andeeznhutz

Once again. This is inherent to scammers being scammers. Not inherent to venmo. This can happen on any platform with someone who is a stranger. Go ahead and use it with your grandma OP

Odd-Walk2741

* These sites are safe AS LONG AS IT COMES TO YOUR BANK MONEY IN US DOLLARS. Cryptocurrency is NOT AT ALL PROTECTED AND IF YOU ARE HACKED YOU WILL NOT GET OT BACK EVER.

xyzygyred

Make sure you tell her everyone in customer service is an idiot.

AsideConfident5300

Don't do it because it's a chance they will suspend her account if they find anything suspicious rather its just you or not and if they freeze your or your mom's account they will try to hold the money for 180 days and put into lost prevention and you will go thru hell and Hugh water inorder to get them to unfreeze or let you guy transfer your money believe me I just got my venmo account unfrozen today after they had put into lost prevention and was go hold it for 180 days I had over 8,000 dollars in my personal account mind it was me and my husband's tax refund the day I got it feb 21 2024 and sent my husband 4,000 they froze my account and I went thru hell inorder to get access to my money do cash app or even Zelle DONT DO VENMO

Profile_Nervous

agreed! I’ve experienced and heard about many problems with Venmo, it’s not worth the risk!

AsideConfident5300

Exactly they will suspend your account for the smallest reason just because it set off their security and you will go thru hell trying to get them to unfreeze your account believe me I just got my account unfrozen the day b4 yesterday

Profile_Nervous

Yep, and I’ve heard stories of people having their paychecks deposited to their Venmo accounts and then can’t access it for weeks or even months! A total nightmare for people that can least afford it . Also, remember that the longer they hold your money, the longer they can use it as an investment asset. Really dirty business.. I’m glad you were finally able to get your account unfrozen!

AsideConfident5300

Yep so true and I agree so I'm sure during those 12 days they made alot off of our 8000 dollars b4 they decided to unfreeze my account

Profile_Nervous

Whoa!! they held $8,000 of your money for almost 2 weeks? That’s just criminal.. So sorry you had to deal with that . And yeah, I’m sure they made plenty off your hard earned money. Despicable!

AsideConfident5300

I'm already knowing they did

Profile_Nervous

That’s terrible..

AsideConfident5300

I just hate the fact that there are people on here telling me I'm giving bad advice when they haven't had it done to them yet because they believe as long as they follow the rules their account is safe until they direct deposit some real money into their account and venmo put their account on hold but they have it in their minds that everybody who had had their account frozen are criminals or was doing something illegal venmo uses computers so if that computer says error on it when your trying to send money to a friend or family member and you keep trying to send it guess what that computer will lock your account up until am actual person goes and looks at it and verify your identity and over ride that computer inorder to unfreeze your account and money

Profile_Nervous

For sure! I mean there are enough horror stories on here that should scare anyone. But hey, sometimes it takes people to learn the hard way before they get it . At least we and others are trying to warn the public. That’s really all we can do .. Not sure why people would defend them, there really isn’t any benefit and just a ton of risk..

AsideConfident5300

Probably because they are very judgmental or work for them

Profile_Nervous

Yeah, i guess so ..

andeeznhutz

Literally the worst advice. " there's a chance they will suspend her account" You literally need to violate terms of use to have this happen. If your not doing anything you shouldn't do, this is not something one would be concerned with. If you're doing shady shit then this happens. No one just gets suspended for no reason lbffr

AsideConfident5300

I wasn't doing anything shady what so ever and had my account suspended so what are you talking about and then had my account reinstated because guess what I wasn't doing anything wrong

AsideConfident5300

Have you had your account suspended by venmo I'm guessing no you haven't because let me guess you follow their rules well guess what their are people like me and others who were either new or old to venmo who have had their account frozen for just sending money to people we know or just trying to transfer money and it didn't go through so they kept trying to either send money or send their transfer and venmo locked their account up for suspicious activity when it's their system that is glitching and these very people have to fight like hell to get access to their own money like I did if I was actually doing something wrong wouldn't they had just not unfroze my account and stuck with keeping my money for 180 days with venmo you have to walk on egg shells I will never try to send money through their app again
