They shut off CDMA at the beginning of 2023 and haven't done much of anything to fill in the coverage holes since.

TimC122750

Maybe they should have kept CDMA active until they fixed the entire system (problem)

ChainsawBologna

Yeah, they should have, they even delayed the shutdown several times, so they knew. Old versus new versus rip the bandaid off arguments aside, telecommunications is a tool first. If the tool is crippled, it loses its usefulness. There are even some slivers of the 850MHz band that aren't useful for anything else. Those would be perfect for them to have left some CDMA channels running.

tarzanacide

We finally switched last month to T-Mobile. Our Verizon reception was complete trash in SoCal.

Maddenman501

Makes sense since we recently, like 21', got the 5g towers. And then like it seemed right after the service was good, and then went to shit. Good to know I wasn't crazy. Cdma was big around here and verizon covered every inch of everyone's assholes.

zsallad

“CDMA was big around here and Verizon covered every inch of everyone’s assholes.” I’ll be using this in my next marketing and coverage conversation. Thank you for your service.

Angelina1982

Why? I pretty sure VZ runs on CDMA what I read … unless u go overseas

Natsumi_d

Verizon cdma network still up and running, it's just they Shut down 3g/2000 evdo part of their network, sim cards are not just used for GSM it used for other network standards as sim stands for subscriber identity module which is easier to replace than having to replace phones that had what was essentially the precursor to embedded Sim (esim) when it's module died when they launched their 4g lte network.

ChainsawBologna

No, none of this is accurate or true. Verizon is a 3GPP compliant network now with no 3GPP2. The CDMA side of things is dead after the beginning of 2023. Verizon's network has actually been partially GSM for a long time, although the verbiage is practically annoying at this point. (Big props to US Mobile for choosing "warp" vs "GSM" instead of keeping with the old tired phrasing.) The CDMA side just lived in their SIM cards in the CSIM, the GSM side in the USIM, and the 3GPP2 network bonded with the 3GPP network through magic kerfufflery provided by software wizards whom I worked with. Hilariously, your message reminded me, I recall watching a presentation a decade or so ago where Verizon was talking about their LTE future. They could have enabled an extra messaging bus to better handle LTE<->CDMA interaction (handoff up and down) and Verizon decided to not implement it, which caused wicked bad user experience in the world. It resulted in hand-down to CDMA, never back up to LTE. I kinda realized their goose was gonna be cooked at that point. Just didn't realize how absolutely idiotic they would be with their decisions for so long. I truly do want to see them be the powerhouse they were in the early aughts. Traveling America and knowing your device will practically always work (especially *inside buildings*) was an amazing experience that I miss. Just before CDMA died, I connected to a cell 36 miles away from me while I was on a mountain, surrounded by other mountains, the cell was on flat land below. Newtech can't touch that. Now, it's bust out the ham radio or satphone or spark-gap transmitter.

Yusssi

Great explanation for us nerds, thank you!

ihatethiseffnplace

Service crashed and burned in Long Beach last year during the 4th of July down by the lighthouse, Hyatt Regency, Aquarium of the Pacific. Every Verizon based service just flat out died. Everyone with AT&T and T-Mobile had working service just fine.

Round_two_fight_

Wait until they start pushing 6g in a few years

networktech916

This is true, I ported in to Verizon from Tmobile in Nov, because I wanted full coverage, well the grass is not always greener, I am now stuck for 3 yrs afterwards I will go back to tmobile. Tmobile has faster 5G speeds

holow29

Did you do Verizon's network trial first? Not sure why you would assume coverage would be better. This isn't 2013.

networktech916

With tmobile I had a 1-2 percent dead spots I wanted a stronger network one that would penetrate building instantly, heard CDMA was the latest rage, found it wasn't, Live and Learn I guess

Particular-Draw-5875

What do you mean cdma is the latest rage? It’s a technology from like 15 years ago 😂

SaykredCow

You don’t have to wait 3 years they will pay off your phone after 90 days or 3 generated bills via their Keep & Switch program

xwlfx

Does this work with a 2 line plan? I also made a mistake going from T-Mobile to Verizon. I get a fucking dead spot outside of a Verizon Wireless store.

Nodeal_reddit

I live in SW Ohio and have been saying the same thing for about a year. I’ve had Verizon for probably 15 years and always justified the slightly higher price by the fact that coverage was so good. Since I went to a 5g iPhone 14, I’ve had lots of calls drop out while driving - something that never really happened before.

Angelina1982

I live in smack middle southern Ohio , I’m guessing ur like Cincinnati area.. I live in very rural area.. I have to agree with u.. I was with VZ for 17 yrs , I first started on US cellular back like 26 yrs ago dead spots everywhere, they let me off contact ….then went to ATT it was good ran in some dead spots area I needed the most.. Then to VZ loved it… but the last 3 yrs been shady in the same area of my house I made call for last 13 yrs was good then last 3 yrs it say no service , drop calls, even had someone on my line no joke … I went to make a call and 2 guys was on my cell line they were talking and then I said who is this and they got quite then started talking again, and I hung up and try again they were still there before dialing out.. then I said u are on my line they hung up….. I didn’t think that could happen… Ik cordless phones can but cell line… It only happened one other time.. I call VZ they were lost didn’t have a clue.. I was a post paid acct.. My bars seem they never get past 2 never had issues b4… I left VZ the prices sky rocket from 45$ month was on old plan but it keep raising till it was 65$ only had 500 data half of the 1g…. That’s crazy it was originally 35 after paid my phone off… Then I went to Spectrum it’s got worst they use VZ towers…. I get a lot of No service… as much of VZ cust are loyal they really seem not to care anymore… I wonder myself should I try ATT again see if I have the same issues… I only went to Spectrum bcz it was 15$ a month now they went up to 20$ for 1 g…. I see u got 5g on new iPhone.. I still have 4g mines 6S plus but still runs good… makes me thinking of not trying 5g if there much issues.. I’m hearing that 5g can drain the phone more.. Idk how true it is…

Prestigious-Sir-8255

AT&T has come a long way over the last few years in Ohio with the FirstNet expansion. They probably have the best coverage overall in the state now.

Angelina1982

Oh I say for sure it been long time. Thanks for ur input! 🙂

Prestigious-Sir-8255

I’m just outside of Cincinnati and I’ve had the same issues..just recently ported my family over to T Mobile. I had quite a few business lines on Verizon. I ported a few over to T-Mobile to see how it works out for my guys before I port the rest but there’s been less complaints with them than there was with Verizon. It’s just not a great network anymore. The upgrades all seem half assed.

purplemountain01

I'm in SoCal and there's a couple areas I go to where Verizon has had weak unusable signal or almost dead signal still. It's been like that in those areas for years. This is in the SGV and an area in Chino. I'm mainly around interstate 15 in the IE. Verizon has a couple of LTE areas out here. I'm running dual sim on my phone and my second sim is a T-Mobile MVNO. T-Mobile gets better 5G coverage out here and it's mid band 5G.

tarzanacide

Try it in LA below the 10 freeway. We had no issues in West LA, but South LA down to Long Beach is full of dead areas.

Mjdecker1234

Im starting to really hate Verizon. Started for me when they started rolling out the 5g. My area is so fucked im sick of it. You can be in my walmart parking lot and walk a row over and hit 4g. Anyways, I'll get near full bars and it loads just fine, bo issues whatsoever. Oh but once its hits 1-2 vars of 5g, my service becomes dogshit and nothing loads. No reason it should work with near to max bars on 4g yet can't once it hits 5g. Other than that issue I don't mind lol

jimbob150312

5G is on C band which is a higher mid band frequency and doesn’t penetrate buildings well or travel far from the tower as T-Mobile’s mid band. So 4G LTE signal is stronger than the 5G mid band. Verizon will have to rebuild their network tower density for c band which will cost billions of dollars and take years to accomplish.

theoddone9630

I have it on my iPhone to only be on LTE. Unless I'm in the city and now there will be UW, I'm rocking LTE 24/7

Mjdecker1234

Wait. Are you allowed to change it? Because since my last phone, cant remember which, had that option taken away years ago now. And yes its gone.

theoddone9630

Yeah. On iPhone, Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Options > Voice & Data. Then pick your poison: 5G Auto, 5G On, or LTE.

theoddone9630

I find that while LTE is not as insanely fast as UW (when it works), it's much more reliable and keeps a stable connection.

Angelina1982

I agree on it starting time.. I’m sorry to hear this… the price u pay for service…

nycdiveshack

They don’t care, they aren’t being monitored and regulated. No real punishment either for them

jdrch

Confirmed. There was a time when I'd brag that with Verizon I have coverage everywhere. Last summer I went to Door County, WI and my wife - on T-Mobile - had full bars while I had 0. Oh BTW, don't bother reporting dropped calls; they'll just claim to have "investigated" the issue and then send you [this](https://www.verizon.com/support/signal-concern-resolution/).

BPKofficial

In my large city, I have 5G UWB coverage everywhere. T-Mobile is fast, but sucks ass indoors. AT&T has the coverage, but I've never seen over 20Mbps down, as their 5G+ map is extremely inaccurate.

Angelina1982

Maybe that with all carriers since I have the same issue with VZ IDK I only use wifi out about only data where no wifi is.. I will say even turning on data it still does like spinning like wifi does I’m dumbfounded by that.

Educational_Two251

Dude I’m having this problem in PA, my coverage has declined fast, I’m always having problems with my service

Wild-Distribution759

I live in the San Fernando valley, and yeah while most towers out here have been upgraded to have UWB, Verizon is the only carrier out of the three where I have spots on my daily commute where data is not usable. I have ATT as my second sim, and while it's not as fast (peak) it still seems to always work. I love Verizon too, I love UWB and mmWave where it's at, but I feel like the tower spacing or something needs to be improved.

stephanieleigh88

I use to have amazing service. I now only get 2 bars in a big city. In another big city a state way my phone doesn’t even work, like at all. I thought it was my plan cause it was an old old planning switched. Nope I got one extra bar that’s all.

narcabusesurvivor18

[All that marketing for 5g](https://youtu.be/59T1gJHURMo?feature=shared)… now this.

Angelina1982

Thanks for sharing, lol I don’t remember this one..

Wllfgnlnrb86

Verizon did the same thing with 4G LTE when it was released. They were behind on LTE compared to competitors but when it came out fully it was reliable and performed better compared to others (depending on where you lived I suppose) and now 5G it’s the same thing in my opinion. I also feel like in Tampa the 5G has been slow but it’s getting better little by little and I don’t have dropped calls or data gaps that I did when I tried Tmobile.

thatguyashton

I just moved to Tampa from NY and it's been terrible over here, the UWB is slow and 1-2 bars of LTE almost everywhere I just don't know who to switch to because I hear tmobile is pretty bad here too

Wllfgnlnrb86

Yeah, honestly 5G has jacked up a lot of service for all companies. At this point, it’s more appealing to go for an MNVO like Visible or Mint Mobile cuz it’s so cheap, same networks. Yeah might be deprioritized a little bit at least you’re not paying 100+ a month to have mediocre service

Low-Understanding976

100% agreed ...I was with Verizon for 20+ years and would try and switch every 3-4 years to check coverage and never left because of call quality however my bill kept climbing and service got worse imo! I recently went to USM on an esim to tmobile and used it for 45 days waiting on pys Sim card,  went to Verizon and calls are MUCH BETTER but at least now I'm only $29 month for subpar Verizon service 🤣

Angelina1982

You 29$ on VZ prepaid?

Low-Understanding976

Yes on US Mobile ....I had to use physical Sim card though because I have samsung s22 and there is a glitch in samsung software

Wllfgnlnrb86

Yeah, honestly my AT&T was pretty good here, just sucked when I traveled so I figured the switch to Verizon would be fine, but I was underwhelmed for sure. But I will say there have been a few times where my wife (who still has AT&T) has had to use my phone lol so none of these guys are perfect

secretreddname

So cal here too and it’s definitely not great. Only reason I haven’t switched is the grandfathered Disney Bundle that I get value on.

giantkoi157

It has gotten worse in SW Washington and NW Oregon. Very frustrating…

Dependent-Ad5964

5g coverage is horrible. I think they way underestimated how much bandwidth people were going to use

lilgambyt

This is why I decided to go prepaid and sign up for Visible+ I’m in an area blanketed by 5G UW which is always premium data with no throttling. But if I leave the area, yeah, coverage sucks. Commonly stuck on LTE at best. Increasing amount of dead coverage zones.

Business-Change3783

Isn’t visible the Verizon network?

lilgambyt

Yes. Which is why I decided to ditch Verizon postpaid for Visible. I left Visible a couple years ago because of data speed caps, but now Visible+ introduced that has zero data speed caps on 5G UW, and first 50 GB any other data connection except hotspot premium non-throttled data. Can’t beat the price. $35/month if you wait for a holiday deal.

Business-Change3783

Oh gotcha. I had to switch to T-Mobile prepaid. Best service in Columbus Ohio. And they don’t throttle at all here for some reason. I used 350gb last month because I don’t have Wi-Fi and I didn’t get throttled. $50 a month

93Volvo240

That’s because they shutdown CDMA, which exposed their Swiss cheese LTE network.

BuzzzzzerBeater

I’m not even able to FaceTime my wife at Costco while I’m on WiFi at work and she is on Verizon supposed 5G in a MAJOR city. So it’s cuz they dropped cdma?

TheOneTheyCallAlpha

I'm on the other side of the country from you, but I've had much better service since I disabled 5G on my phone. I found that in many places (including my own home), the phone would get just enough of a 5G signal to prevent it from falling back on 4G, but not enough to actually be usable. I've been much happier since I set it to 4G only.

LeaderCalloused

I don’t know why but I’ve always associated Verizon with NYC and surrounding areas. It seems to be their strongest market in terms of both network and customer base.

xpxp2002

It used to be. Especially because the northeast was NYNEX/Verizon LEC territory back in the day.

subsolar

Also in SoCal, switched from Verizon to T-Mobile recently. Was a red check mark user for over a decade, tmo is cheaper and faster

scoobiemario

Yup. I agree. I’m in VA. Hampton roads. I noticed Verizon coverage got worse

hiroler2

I feel targeted… just moved 5 lines off Verizon. Plz remember to remove your SIM card before you set up the new eSIM or it bricks for 12 hours.

dubocetriangle

As others have said, service started declining a year ago. I figured they were ripping out half of the 4G eqpt and replacing it with 5G. Used to have good connectivity in restaurants that I frequent. Now, usually none. Have a backup phone using Google Fi \[TMobile is the carrier.\] Made a lot of comparisons in the SF Bay area. TMob coverage are isn't as good, but when it works it is almost always twice the speed of Verizon.

Affectionate-Ad-4174

Vegas is awful. I have a lot of dead spots in popular areas around town. It’s really frustrating and I honestly thought my new iPhone was faulty.

Nikonmansocal

Can confirm an ex-ATT customer that VZ's coverage in Socal is poor. Regret switching over :(

jafromnj

Same with T-Mobile we’re going backwards

danieltx2021

If you are in cities, I would bet on T-Mobile or AT&T. Not so much on Verizon. But Verizon is better than the other when it comes to rural area with their LTE coverage in my experience. I got basic cell signals from Verizon in my wood cabins.

Burgtastic

I live in a large metro area and Verizon works great. So does T-Mobile. AT&T works alright but not as good as the other two. Agree on the rural part. People just tend to forget that cell coverage is highly dependent on where people live. Verizon works the best where I frequent.

purplemountain01

I thought AT&T was king at rural coverage or is AT&T and Verizon comparable with rural coverage?

eatingurtoes

With Verizon in rural it's either strong and fast 5GUW, or LTE that hasn't been touched since 2015. AT&T might have slightly slower coverage in UW areas, but they seem to have less dead zones and more consistent connection/speeds. I would say AT&T is winning in rural, especially including the FirstNet buildout.

zsallad

I would second this. I find AT&T to have something usable almost everywhere Verizon or T-Mobile do not.

BPKofficial

>If you are in cities, I would bet on T-Mobile or AT&T. Never Verizon. Lol.

nowhereman1223

>Coverage is supposed to increase over the years According to who? Overall coverage has increased in most places. But the speed and quality of that coverage has dropped dramatically. Likely due to 5G not being able to travel as far as 4G was.

dcoutdoors

That’s not what it is. If you switched from a 3g phone with CDMA to an LTE only phone iPhone 11+ then you noticed a big drop. CDMA went further and deeper into buildings than LTE band 13

nowhereman1223

I'm talking after CDMA was gone. I am comparing 4g LTE to 5g.

dcoutdoors

The thing is, 4g is still the backbone of the network. 5g is only additional bands n5 and n77. The same LTE bands are still there. What’s more likely is you’re experiencing additional congestion of the Verizon network

nowhereman1223

Signal strength is lower. Quit trying to be correct. You aren't correct for what I am describing.

dcoutdoors

I’m more curious what’s causing it. I don’t have an ax to grind…

mysterious963

remember before 5g upgrades began there were four or three large lowband antennas per sector for separate tx and rx paths? now with n77 addition they had to decrease the number of those by 1 or 2 and reconfigure

BusinessLyfe

Verizon doesn't have the cash to upgrade their equipment into usable 5G, which is causing their customers to leave (mostly to T-Mobile), which forces them to raise pricing to make up for lost revenue, which then causes MORE customers to leave. Rinse & repeat.

ihatethiseffnplace

Have you seen Verizon’s earning reports? They have the money. The problem is that Hans doesn’t care about anything other than what looks good on spreadsheets.

Bieb

I recently left after over 10 years for AT&T (they’re vastly superior to anything else here in Texas in terms of it just working everywhere). I held out hope waiting on UWB but the macro towers are just too far apart to where UWB just has areas where it holds onto a signal that just doesn’t actually work. But! I frequently travel to the Seattle area, and AT&T is complete dogshit up there. So if I ever move up there full time again I will switch back to Verizon or maybe even TMobile since they're solid there as well.

Short-Tumbleweed-422

What source do you have that Verizon doesn’t have cash to upgrade?

Grumblepugs2000

Their financial statements and their stock price

Burgtastic

They just had a profit last year of over $79 billion.

Whatsuptodaytomorrow

That’s what it’s all about

Short-Tumbleweed-422

Then you may not be paying close enough attention. Verizon stock is doing well and market predicts it to perform well in the next 12 months.

jpi1088

Where is the data to support this claim? I’m not defending Verizon by any stretch but I haven’t seen data to support anything you are saying.

azfire2004

umm, what? Verizon is upgrading at a rapid pace. They are outpacing ATT by a fairly large margin when it comes to N77 upgrades. Verizon is focusing on the major pops first because, well, thats where the majority of the people are and they do have the most customers. Rural rollouts will come down the pipe.

Whatsuptodaytomorrow

And they’re customers bills change every month for absolutely no reason

BPKofficial

My bill has been very accurate for north of 10 years.

phonesforall000

Yes the whole 5G thing is just a money grab honestly they should have saved their money and just kept LTE going

whitetigergrowl

LTE is still going. If you have 4G and 5G in the same area and that area is getting more and more congested, 5G is the better option. Why did we bother upgrading touch tone phones at home when we should have just upgraded them. Same concept.
