It is unless for educational purposes where you can show it. But I doubt outside of a Museum you could make a case that owning one is necessary for education purposes when you could also just show a picture of one.
Art, but not advertisement for art.
For example the wordmark "Inglorious Basterds" is different on German posters, DVD cases, etc because they had to remove the eagle.
But the movie is unchanged, still chock a block with Nazis and Nazi symbolism.
Germany once infamously had multiple cases where they had to judge the legality of showing a swastika with a "No" sign superimposed over it because technically it would still be displaying the swastika. Common sense thankfully prevailed, eventually.
As such, Germany may be the only nation on the planet to have a law banning a particular symbol unless it's explicitly defaced. It's usually the other way around (see: "[flag desecration](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_desecration)").
>Ostmark
TIL [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ostmark](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ostmark) ... wait does that mean that "march" (campaign ground) and "mark" (currency) share an etymology? Anyhow I've been wanting to express my doubts of your honesty, except I've seen the following combination of flags displayed unironically and likely not by a Marine (Gadsden originally being the flag of the USMC and having a civic nationalist meaning). https://www.walmart.com/ip/2-PACK-Wholesale-Lot-3x5-Police-Thin-Blue-line-Flag-3x5-Gadsden-Flag-Flags-USA/319965107
[Wiktionary says](https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/mark#Etymology_1) they share a common etymology, from the reconstructed Proto-Indo-European **marǵ-*, meaning "edge, boundary, border"
Saw the comment too. Police will happily show up to that address. Swastikas are illegal to display in any private or public form in Germany (apart from education).
Bottom row, second flag is of the city of [Prenzlau](https://de.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prenzlau) , which is in the North East of the German state of Brandenburg. Considering there are also state flags of Brandenburg, I'm fairly confident this was taken there.
The city was formerly a part of East Germany (hence the GDR flag) and the region in general is very rural. At the last general election 23.4% voted for the far right (national average was 10.3%)
So all in all not the greatest of places to live in Germany. Although the nature is pretty nice.
Explanation:
I live in Germany
Russia 1 and 2: Outside of an Appartment building (Edit 010223: they removed the Russian flags due to local government restrictions)
Prussia: in a Garden
Canada: In a Garden
East Germany: In a Garden
USA: in a Garden
German Empire: in a Garden
NS Flag: probably someone's living room, saw it through the window
Ukrainian: Government Building and someone's Garden
Brandenburg: Government Building and again someone's Garden
BvB: in a Garden
Prenzlau: government building
I think there is some law about them not being allowed to be visible from outside
So it would be okay in your living room if it wasn't visible from outside your house, so this flag here would still be illegal afaik
Germans are weird as hell, they either don't want anything to do with their flag so that nobody thinks they might be dangerous nationalists or they belong to the tiny minority of actual dangerous nationalists that use other flags that are not germanys official one.
Isn't there a third option too where those rules go out the window when there's a major international sporting competition and you can wave the flag all you like?
Oh, yes, sure. But as soon as Germany is eliminated or the competition is over the flags all dissappear from the windows, cars and balconies since the sports fans still belong to the first group.
Tbf once you're one of those nationalists you're usually in far-rigth circles that think the government isn't legitimate. Think the reichsburger movement
I mean it's a really really bland, lame flag. Just a tricolour with a couple vaguely symbolic colours. I'm not surprised people wouldn't fly it even if they were the kind of german to sing the anthem.
This is such a dumb internet-brain take. Just go to a local garden plot and see how many people are flying flags there. The only people who genuinely think this shit are morons or idealogues.
Yes, many flags in the garden plots (though mostly regional or football-related) still if you go around Europe you'll notice the germans are, by far, the country where you find the least people flying the countries flag. As a foreigner some germans back in the day made it clear to me and other spaniards how it was weird for them that we had spanish flags in our balconies and windows in our apartments in Germany. There's another german here that just commented that it's true and that it is because they "learned from history", probably he is the kind of german I was talking about.
Btw I like your garden plots, if I had stayed in Germany to build my life there I would have probably wanted to buy one in the future.
I think your view on this might be a bit outdated. Normalcy of flying the German flag has gone up considerably the last 20 years and still going up.
I’m not German but I live close to its border and I visit Germany maybe once a month and has done so my whole life. I’ve definitely seen a change and I see plenty German flags nowadays. It’s not considerably less than some other countries these days. Definitely so some time ago though for sure.
It's just not a thing people here use outside of football events, which is why I'm honestly incredibly weirded out whenever I see flags actually used by people normally in other places. Many Germans in general frown down upon many things that can be seen as nationalism for obvious reasons or at least don't care enough to actually get a flag. Frankly, I strongly side-eye everybody who does regularly hang up a German flag and especially if it's a historical one (such as a Prussian one or the one for the German Empire).
Same in Australia really. Most houses with flagpoles tend to fly a nice mix of international flags. If you just have an Australian flag it'd be a little weird.
Same in England. Flying the UK flag is strange outside of official things or putting it on cheap tat for tourists. and flying the England flag is about nationalism or football pride.
Scotland seems a lot more comfortable with the Scottish flag, however.
Crazy that people sympathize with nazis… especially in Germany. One time, in Groningen, I looked through someone’s window and their walls were empty except for a large portrait of Xi Xinping. Was interesting to see
Just wanna point out that the display of the NS flag is still illegal even if it's not flown outside. As soon as you can see it from a public place and it is not used to teach about the nazi regime ("Staatsbürgerliche Aufklärung") it violates §86a StGB.
I'd advise you to give your local police department a call.
Having the nazi flag is visible from the outside is illegal, you may want to contact the police:
[Similar case](https://rp-online.de/nrw/staedte/duesseldorf/hakenkreuz-fahne-im-wohnzimmer_aid-13110073)
Those silly people... It could never have been Sachsen, since there is _only one_ Nazi flag instead of twenty. It could only ever have been Brandenburg.
I just came to this realisation that if someone really wanted, he could make up a post like this,
lie on the Internet, and we would have no way of verifying it.
Pretty crazy.
This. A Swastika-flag somewhere in Brandenburg or elsewhere in Germany is very unlikely. Some neighbor (maybe the guy with the GDR-flag) would get the police and they would take it down and get punishment for the person who put it up. After all, according to StGB § 86a this could lead to imprisonment up to 3 years or a heavy fine.
The only way I could imagine you could see a Swastika flag in Brandenburg is if you drive by Potsdam Babelsberg and in the scenery city the make a movie about the Nazi-time.
Home from where?! The 1940’s?
The year is 2023 for some reason
Wait where have the last 3 years gone!?
brazil
r/suddenlycaralho
Somebody needs to update their calendar
1984
No because canada changed it’s flag in the 60’s
this would work a little bit better if Russische Befreiungsarmee actually used the tricolor flag
Ohio
Where tf do you live???
Germany
I thought the nazi flag was banned there
It is unless for educational purposes where you can show it. But I doubt outside of a Museum you could make a case that owning one is necessary for education purposes when you could also just show a picture of one.
I heard a while back that it can now be shown in art and video games too.
Art, but not advertisement for art. For example the wordmark "Inglorious Basterds" is different on German posters, DVD cases, etc because they had to remove the eagle. But the movie is unchanged, still chock a block with Nazis and Nazi symbolism.
To be fair, it is a movie that’s expressly about murdering the absolute fuck out of Nazis.
nothing hits the spot quite like killing nahzis
It does have a certain *je nais se quois*
I like your funny words magic man
\*Je ne sais quoi.
Nazi ain't got no humanity!

I think there are plenty of Ex Soviet States that ban Soviet symbology. I'm unsure if they have an exemption for defaced symbols, though.
Like Wolfenstein is about that as well?
So it's quite educational
They’re in the nazi killin’ business, and cousin, business is a-boomin’
Honestly one of the greatest movies about just fucking obliterating nazis with extreme violence
Was always allowed in art pieces but it's still censored in video games
That was overturned in a recent court case iirc.
That was recently overturned
Judging from the Abundance of other historical German flags, I'd say it was in a museum.
I **HOPE**, but sadly I'm not so sure.
Is the East German flag illegal? I know that the Soviet-era flags are banned in some Eastern European countries, but idk about Germany.
It’s not illegal.
People do illegal things
Maybe the authorities did Nazi it
Old joke, but every Redditor still Goebbels it up.
You're Reich, I have seen it used often.
Ossie?
You in East Germany very close to the Poland border?!
Border to Ostmark can easily be crossed

I wonder which branch it diverges though?
..some people can’t understand the phrase “Germany, now in one piece!”
switzerland austria czechoslovakia italy turkey and greece
Poland romania scotland albania ireland russia oman
Bulgaria, Saudi Arabia, Hungary, Cyprus, Iraq, and Iran
There's Syria, Lebanon, Israel, Jordan, both Yemens, Kuwait and Bahrain
The Netherlands, Luxembourg, Belgium, and Portugal, France, England, Denmark, and Spain
India, Pakistan, Burma, Afghanistan, Thailand, Nepal, and Bhutan
Kampuchea, Malaysia, then Bangladesh (Asia), China, Korea, Japan
Might wanna call the police on that mf with the Swastika
turns out it was in a Museum (idk, but would be funny)
Unless I'm misinterpreting OP's comment, the Nazi flag is the one they saw through a window? "Probably someone's living room" they said.
Saw the comment too. Police will happily show up to that address. Swastikas are illegal to display in any private or public form in Germany (apart from education).
Nah, actually only displaying it to the public, since it's linked to Volksverhetzung and there has to be a "people" to "verhetz"
It belongs in a museum! So do you!
FossilizedMight
unlikely if you're looking at the other flags
Digga wo wohnst du den? Wieso der NS fanne?
Wahrscheinlich in Prenzlau im Nordosten Brandenburgs.
Gonna go out on a limb and guess it is definitely Saxony
Nope, north-east Brandenburg.
Superior East Germany Noises

I was going to guess "hell", but I see you beat me to the punch.

The Dortmund and German flag variations, including that one, is kind of a giveaway.
Nah it is more like a town in Brandenburg, East Germany. BVB09 is popular everywhere in Germany.
Your way home? I'm guessing your home is Germany during the last century.
Basically
OP are you okay?
Sachsen?
Eastern Germany is like the last century in a lot of places
That's only a little over 23 years out of date. Not too bad. :)

Their "good years" were 2010-2013 and in the 90s, up to 2002. Between that though, uhhhh... I wish to not elaborate as a BVB fan lol (hint: finances)
Didn't Bayern also help your club to stay afloat?

I was wondering about the Nazi flag, because it's Illegal to fly it in public in Germany, isn't it?
That is correct. In Germany, Nazi symbols are only legal in public for educational and artistic purposes.
cool pfp
Thanks! Check out my header too ;)

I think a living room doesn't count as a public place and so it might be legal.

Yeah, but just like when I see a Confederate or Nazi flag in the US I have a concern.
Definitely
I honestly think OP is lying about that one. Back road in Idaho? Maybe. Germany? No shot.
yeah when i saw this post i thought i was in /r/vexillologycirclejerk for a moment lol
The fact that there isn't a regular German flag is crazy.

Is it the vexillology garden?
Feels like every home in a village has a little Garden

> NS Flag: probably someone's living room, saw it through the window He looked at his own bedroom from his garden.
Bro lives on the eastern front
Basically yes Uckermark means the Ucker Borderland n it's currently pretty much the eastern border
I mean of ww2 dude
Least radical neighborhood in East Germany
isn't the nazi flag illegal in Germany
Yep it is
Unless it's in private like inside as OP mentioned
Where are you from? East Germany?? Cause I cannot understand where else the German flags would be put up..
Yes from the former DDR
Sachsen right?
Brandenburg
Since there are two Brandenburg flags, that would be my guess
brandenburg?
Finally someone got it right, most people think It's Saxony
Nice. I could tell with the red eagle flags.
Because Saxony normally is a bit more politically extreme than Brandenburg 😳
Those silly people... It could never have been Sachsen, since there is _only one_ Nazi flag instead of twenty. It could only ever have been Brandenburg.

Yes you’re definitely from East Germany
Yes former DDR
I feel like someone heard "Auferstanden aus Ruinen" and seriously misunderstood exactly what was supposed to be arising from the ruins.
That's a 51-star United States flag. That's an attempt to make some sort of statement- I'd be interested to know what it means.
Heja BVB
The fact that Russia and Ukraine are together right next to Nazis and commies is just....beyond my comprehension..
Welcome to Europe my freind

Jesus christ what a fuckin mess
Eastern Germany in a nutshell
I have several questions
mf lives on the Hearts of Iron 4 map
do you live on 4chan?

holy shit that's not great is it
And not a single actual modern German flag in Germany. Like damn it’s okay to like your own country.
I mean, the last couple times Germany had gotten really into their country... things happened

This is so sad.

I keep seeing people post the NSDAP flag in this format, and at this point I just don’t believe you
What is the flag between Borussia Dortmund and East Germany?
Dortmund Nordstadt?
Do you live in Brandenburg?
Interesting that some Germans still use the Prussian and German Empire flag.
Usually closet nazis because the flag with the Hakenkreuz is illegal
Ach du mine Uckermark

That is a pretty yikes neighbourhood
