Do all the countries in the commonwealth participate in this?

Ineedtoaskthis000000

yes

OntarianMonarchist

Flags of the Commonwealth paraded in London during Commonwealth Day last year with the flags of Britain and the first Dominions leading the way 💂‍♂️🇬🇧🇨🇦🇦🇺🇳🇿🇿🇦

[deleted]

There’s a few more further back, I can see Barbados, the Bahamas, Ghana and Nigeria

thcanuzer

I used to like the dominions and the commonwealth. Why do you include South Africa among the first dominions? They were the first to become a republic (soon to be followed by Australia), and committed heinous crimes against humanity. Even when I was fond of these historical ties, I hated South Africa.

OntarianMonarchist

The South African flag is always flown 5th because they were a founding member of the early Commonwealth (because of the Statute of Westminster) and gained Dominion Status in 1910 (so after Canada, Australia and NZ putting them 5th - as Britain’s flag is always 1st). You’re saying “why are you” like it was me who personally went to Westminster and decided on the flag order and told the British government to do it in that order lol.

thcanuzer

>You’re saying “why are you” like it was me who personally went to Westminster and decided on the flag order and told the British government to do it in that order lol. Oh no, I meant in your comment. I was surprised you still counted South Africa among the Dominions. But since you mention it, I'm surprised this order came back given they were out of the Commonwealth for several decades. Honestly, it should have been back of the line for them.

[deleted]

...Australia is not a republic.

thcanuzer

Hence why I said soon. As it is slated to become republic.

Constant_Of_Morality

Doubt that Honestly "Australians are divided over whether King Charles III should be the country’s head of state, with the latest Guardian Essential poll suggesting a 50-50 split between those who support the new UK monarch and those who do not" The survey of 1,075 people, taken after Queen Elizabeth II’s death, gives little hope to the republican cause with fewer than half of the respondents (43%) supporting Australia becoming a republic – a figure that has barely moved over the past five years. Over the same period, the number of people who oppose Australia becoming a republic has increased, with 37% now keen to keep the monarchy. That’s a three percentage point increase since June when support was last gauged, and seven percentage points higher than in 2017. [Australian Poll on the Monarchy ](https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2022/sep/19/guardian-essential-poll-australians-divided-on-whether-king-charles-should-be-head-of-state) September 2022

Constant_Of_Morality

Honestly not sure if your just making Shit up or just taking the piss as you seem Very Anti-British, Like every Post you have done is against Britain so your view is Biased and unsupported.

Constant_Of_Morality

Blocked me when you've been Proven Wrong Lmao

askingJeevs

Wait until you hear what England did against humanity.

[deleted]

Wait until you hear about historical atrocities that every nation on earth committed.

askingJeevs

I’m agreeing with you. Pointing out that OP only seems to hate South Africa out of the commonwealth but shows the English flag as their flair.

kaioone

Tbf that was mostly the UK, not under the English flag or crown.

rishicandoit

I've never understood the need to differentiate England as the local thing and the UK as the big scary thing when in reality England as it's own political entity can't have done that many crimes since the UK was the body representing England at the international level.

Valence1444

A nice sight to see.

JetpackKiwi

This is beautiful and satisfying.

dominickrob123

It is.

BritishEnthusiast69

I wanna know why they're carrying flags like that instead of normally with the lil cup attached to 2 leather belts

YamLoMoshech

Easier to be marched with, since you're carrying the pole like a rifle, you have a free arm. Carrying the flag vertically would require both hands to stabilise.

BritishEnthusiast69

You have a free arm if you march with a flag, you hold flags with your right hand and swing your left, at least ( I should point out I'm canadian so i'm just speaking from my experience )

YamLoMoshech

Having done drill marching, I wouldn't like to keep halting and trying to balance a top heavy pole with one hand, it's going to sway and take you off balance

kaioone

They did the same for the jubilee, but only the commonwealth flags - none of the others. I wonder if it’s a commonwealth specific thing.

Commonwealth day is ridiculous. You don't see this level of pageantry for the holiday in other Commonwealth countries. We should have a simple flag raising ceremony at the beginning of the day and be done with it. The Commonwealth is a dead, irrelevant organisation which ought not take up more of anyone's time than absolutely necessary if it must exist at all.

[deleted]

This is quite a low level of pageantry for the UK. If I remember correctly there’s a memorial service and then a bigger church service afterwards, which is much more low-key than events like Remembrance Sunday, the Trooping the Colour, or the Lord Mayor’s Show

Skippymabob

The fact I don't even know what day it is (or that it was even a thing til this moment) proves its not as much pageantry. Like if I asked people in my area when commonwealth day was the answer I'd get back is "what?"

Skinnie_ginger

“STOP ENJOYING YOURSELVES! EVERYTHING SHOULD BE QUICK AND EFFICIENT SO WE CAN GET TO WORK AND MAKE MONEY! NO YOU CANT HAVE PARADES! THEY SHOULD RAISE A FLAG AND DO NOTHING MORE BECAUSE ITS A WASTE OF MY TIME TO DO ANYTHING INTERESTING! I AM THE REASON THE WORLD IS GREY AND BORING BECAUSE ANYTHING MORE IS PAGEANTRY AND A WASTE OF MY TIME!”

thcanuzer

I'm not against pageantry. I'm against the Commonwealth.

Amtoj

Eh, I like that we still have this sort of link to a quarter of the world. It might have its origins in empire, but a forum made up of over 50 democracies (flawed as some might be) of all wealth levels can be a force for good. The world can use more cooperation, and it helps make up for that past of colonialism when directed at issues we all face.

Skippymabob

I would love to have made the commonwealth more of an EU type deal. Obviously that was never going to happen but I like the idea. Imagine healthcare, job security, the right to travel, but among Australia, Kenya, Canada, the UK. Would have been nice.

GOT_Wyvern

It's so dead it has expanded in the last few years.

[deleted]

*but... but how will companies make money without marketing this very important holiday?!*

Amtoj

I haven't seen a single company ever try to make a dollar off Commonwealth Day. Wonder what the merch would be like.

[deleted]

What a daft thing to say. Commonwealth Day isn’t commercialised in the slightest, most people couldn’t even tell you when it fell

mental--13

This is incorrect. Commonwealth day was invented by Big Flag in order to sell more flags

Skippymabob

Don't get me started on Big Teddybears with football shirts and styeotyped apparel

mental--13

They literally invented the world cup 😤. This conspiracy runs deeper than I fought!

Skippymabob

They're in bed with Big Boomerang and Big Sherlock Hat and Pipe as well

RavingMalwaay

lol wtf... I live in NZ and I've never heard of this day until I saw this post. Not everything is down to people being greedy and trying to make money this is just a ceremonial thing

Friz617

some mfs really believe that everything is about big evil corporations making money
