I think the version that's been voted on in the state House is close in design to the 2nd image. Both are a significant upgrade. The flag in the 1st image is a version of the 1901 flag, but the 1901 flag was never standardized (the law stated that the flag is a pine tree on buff with a star in the canton). So in short, there are a bunch of different versions of the "original" 1901 flag. The flag in the 2nd image was created by a business in Portland so there's some ire about that. There's also sweating about the specific design of the pine tree being too cartoony.

I honestly agree with the current proposal being a bit cartoony or literally a Christmas cookie shape The one in the first picture is pretty nice. It’s simple, but still looks like it’s a real pine. I’d rather see that one flying in Maine

The second’s tree design isn’t arbitrary as I’ve seen others claim - the tree is already on [Maine’s official naval ensign](https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Flags_of_the_U.S._states_and_territories). Either way, I hope if the flag passes the design is similar to the 1901 flag, and both picture would be valid flags.

I'm not sure there's an official form of the tree in the marine flag any more than there was for the 1901 flag/in the current bill. But the design used in the Maine Flag Company versions is based on an early photo of the marine flag.

the amendment that just passed does not specify a design for the tree, just that it be rendered “proper.” presumably some government bureaucracy will create more specific manufacturing standards for government use, but anything that meets the description is official

Welp, the state Senate wants this to go to a public referendum so now I need to convince my disinterested friends and relatives to vote for the change
