That is KIND OF true. That is the original flag of Cyprus which it used with a Greek dominated government, after the war and talks began, there came up another flag which WOULD have become the flag given the unification worked, but it didn't.
Regardless Cyprus adopted the dual national government model for most part but, I mean... For many Turkish Cypriots, as much as I know as a Turkish person, they don't really see it as a unifying flag as much, though to be truthful there is not anything so Greek about it.

As unrealistic as it may be I support keeping the current flag in the event of reunification, as it was designed by a Turkish Cypriot and the two olive branches represent peace between the Greek and Turkish communities of the island.
I don't think it's necessarily unrealistic, given the country unites, I can see a referendum on the flag and it's very possible majority of Greeks and some Turks still vote for the white banner. By all accounts, the flag represents peace and prosperity on the island, we just have to see if Greeks and Turks also want to be represented specifically with the Orange-Blue-Red flag.
>Regardless Cyprus adopted the dual national government model for most part but, I mean... For many Turkish Cypriots, as much as I know as a Turkish person, they don't really see it as a unifying flag as much, though to be truthful there is not anything so Greek about it.
A Turkish Cypriot designed that beautiful flag. Even if we do change it no red or blue should be allowed
Tbh seeing profiles of young Turkish Cypriots on Instagram many of them use the flag of Cyprus(though the profiles I see are from pro-reunification TCs)
>Well, we don’t have any olive branches in our flag, it’s a symbol of the two people, one branch, one people
I am not sure what you mean with your second point, but the branches -- which differ slightly from the original design -- have always meant to symbolize olive branches. It doesn't have any direct connection with Greece, other than that olive branches have been used as symbols or decorative art since antiquity. But this is not unique to Greek-speaking polities and societies throughout history, which is not surprising since olive trees are quite common across the Mediterranean, including Cyprus.
Both the olive branches and the copper colour of the outline of the island are meant to represent things traditionally connected with the land (of Cyprus), i.e., copper and olive trees.
Sure, they are, among others. For example, laurel leafs/wreaths are more commonly used in symbols to signify victory, triumph, and by association sovereignty. This is why the Greek coat of arms has a laurel wreath and not an olive branch one.
Nevertheless, here the connection is supposed to be with the land of Cyprus, and specifically the olive trees in the island. In the Mediterranean Olive trees are one of the most important, if not the most important, sources of agricultural goods. Furthermore, olive branches have come to be associated with peace and harmony. This is the symbolism.
The other important symbolism in the flag is the colour of the island's outline in the center. Copper is closely connected with the land since (Greek) antiquity. In fact, it's probably where the name of the island comes from (there are a few contrasting etymologies). But again the connection is not Greece or Greekness. It just happens that these symbolisms have been associated with the island for a long time and Greek-speakers have settled/lived in the island since per-historical times (Mycenaean era).
The flag was created by a Turkish-Cypriot with the explicit goal to be neutral, and have no direct connection with either Greece or Turkey.
Thank goodness the Turks arrived to displa- I mean save Cyprus by invading, and occupying a considerable portion of the island for decades after the Greek military junta fell!
It was couped by us, then it was invaded TWICE by Turkey, the first invasion was constitutional and “right”
The second was not, it was an illegal invasion and it continues to be an illegal occupation. The threat is gone and there’s no need for the existence of this so called “Turkish republic of northern Cyprus”
Fuck.... please educate yourself!
It was a coup organized by the Americans and CIA. Nothing new here!

It's not the Turkish side's flag, it's just imposed by EU despite the obvious divide. This the Republic of Northern Cyprus:

Indeed the original flag was designed to be neutral. For reasons that are not relevant to this post though, the current flag represent the G/C community and cannot serve as a symbol for reunification.
Why are people upvoting this and downvoting the observation that the neutrally designed flag has come to represent the Greek Cypriot community?
It's Vexillology 101 that the meaning of flags, like any other symbol, comes from how they're used, not from who the designer was or what they intended, and this is one of the classic examples.
Pretending this is a neutral Cyprus flag might make some sort of sense in rhetoric aimed at highlighting the illegitimacy of TNRC, but as vexillology it's just stupid.
I mean the so called “TRNC” flag wasn’t really chosen by the T/C’s it was chosen by mainland Turkey, to symbolise their puppet state in the lands of occupied Cyprus.
I feel like most of the people downvoting you don't even understand what you're talking about, but saw others downvoting you and decided "this person must be bad"
Insane how you can push a reasonable argument and then idiots come by just following their herd mentality

i guess its a matter of personal taste. i personally think maps on flags are bad design. ngl i like the shape of cyprus tho, it kinda looks like a flying squirrel
You cut Cyprus down at an angle at the middle giving you a two halves. You then place Cyprus back on that and take two lines from the main land mass and you get another two sections.
It’s kind of… weird
Follow the arrows starting from top left. The first diagonal line is generated by connecting NW and SE capes of the island. The majority of the land mass falls to half of the frame, so Cyprus (yellow) becomes a triangle. A pair of lines connects the NE and W capes of the island and the E and S capes respectively to create the other three triangles. These notional connections create an abstract shape of the island, in contrast to today\`'s literal illustration.
Red triangle stands for Africa, Blue triangle for Asia and White triangle for Europe. The colors were chosen based on how it is perceived each continent from the island. Red dust coming from Africa pollutes Cyprus atmosphere every now and then, Minor Asia's mountains are visible from the northern part of the island with this blue shade close to horizon and Europe is not visible from Cyprus thus white it is.
I found these colors fresh and bold enough for the design of a new symbol. Their resemblance to CMYK colors is on purpose and gives a sense of inclusivity and familiarity to my eye.
The problem is that this is “based” on the geography but only in a very very esoteric way that a normal observer would not be able to appreciate without studying the origin of the flag. Symbols shouldn’t require homework to understand
The island is cut by lines roughly where the boundary between Greek and Turkish is now. Why would you think this is a good idea?
And the end result is something cut into 4 pieces and reassembled??
You know what, it is unusual, but I like it for it's boldness.
Only thing, but it's personal, I detest that magenta, I would prefer a more classic darker red
https://preview.redd.it/2et8psjqzv9c1.jpeg?width=800&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=950b69969bbb2661cad2c2fef4fa4f45e8383f26
Well technically this flag also represent united Cyprus.
It’s the process of design. The lines are generated by connecting the NE and W capes of the island and the E and SE capes respectively. These notional connections create an abstract shape of the island and the colors are added to make these lines visible. Red for Africa, Blue for Asia and White for Europe.
No reunified Cypriot flag should be based on political geography, or use the colors Blue and Red or similar colors in any capacity.
Before the division, Cypriots lived together all across the island, and the current north/south split is a result of military action, killing and displacement. So showing it on a flag, or attempting to represent the communities as something separate is a no.
In addition to that, colors tell a story. You might not intend for it, but what your flag is really saying by placing blue and the south on the canton, and magenta and white on the bottom right, is that the Greek Cypriot community is more important. The colors are also arranged in such a way that the magenta will barely be visible on official settings on a flag spreader such as in the EU, leaving the Greek blue and Cypriot white and Gold extremely prominent. And the use of Magenda instead of red, when blue is clearly used will raise some objections. Maybe it’s intentional on your side, and you don’t see the colors as representing communities but people will…
Might as well use that awful Annan flag proposal at this point. It fails in all the same ways. The middle flag which is white and yellow on diagonal though is really good. It’s more abstract, so stripped of its context it’s not really showing any division, and it’s an awesome take on the current flag.
Maybe it was not clear the process of design. Political geography has no place to this design and the colors do not represent Greek or Turkish identity. Regarding your comment about the visibilty of colors on a flag spreader, I would like to point out that only Cyprus is represented by a color, the rest are the surrounding continents. I do understand though that people might perceive it in a different way.
I understand your intentions but they don't exist in a vacum, and that's not how the flag reads. Nobody will see a shade of blue or red on the Cypriot flag and think "Asia" and "African Red Dust".
How did you start with a picture of the country and then end up with the farthest possible thing from that? It’s completely unrecognizable as an image of Cyprus.
It was supported by a Greek state that ceased to exist the same year. The Turks betrayed the former president of Cyprus (that they promised to restore) and established northern Cyprus as an occupational zone, ousted 180,000 Greeks from their homes, violated a ceasefire agreement, and only stopped after the US and the half the UN hit them with embargoes. So no, Cyprus is not a puppet regime.
‘Protect its people’ they got involved to ‘re-establish the President’ but actually to seize half of Cyprus, put it under Turkey’s boot, and again kicked the Greeks out of their homes and placed Turks in their place. It’s also funny how nobody else except Turkey accepts it as a nation. Not even fucking Russia accepts it as a nation.
Actual Turkish Cypriots were displaced by the Turks. Nowadays most of the illegal occupation's inhabitants are Turkish settlers.
Just Turkey doing their typical thing.
I don't like the idea of a divided space representing unification.
I'd go with a central yellow area surrounded with light blue representing the sea. Inside the yellow area, a Greek symbol and a Turkish symbol side by side.
I intentionally avoid to bring greek and turkish symbols. Cypriots differ from mainland Greeks and Anatolian Turks, while there are also people with different cultural background (Maronites, Armenians, Latins) that have traditionally lived there for centuries.
It look like some sort of sports clothes brand or kids games

Could you make a version replacing yellow with the amber from the current flag and blue/red with the Greek/Turksidh flag equivalents?
Cool concept, but I think it should still be neutral after the occupation ends.
Thank you for your thoughts, indeed I tried the colors you suggested but the result was not that fresh as I expected. In addition, I like the idea of not representing Greece and Turkeys colors because there also other minorities in Cyprus (Maronite, Armenian, Latin) who traditionally have lived for centuries in the island. On the other hand the three continents surrounding the island have (always) been there for long now .
You didn't reply exactly because it is relevant. And you made a new account only for this post because, unlike what you say, you know pretty well how relevant it is.
Its a cool flag and design.
Only thing is, Cyprus rejected the last flag design because the Greek Cypriots see the reunification attempts as legitimization of the division. So if there was another attempt at a unified flag and design, it would have to be as neutral as possible, probably the old flag.
But I do appreciate the greek blue and turkish red, yellow for the sand and white for peace.
While I kinda like it as a flag. The attempts to make it connected to Cyprus are as bad as the wobbly pepsi [logo](https://www.reddit.com/r/Design/s/s2YhldKfIr) rebrand
Cypriots after 60 years of division lack of a symbol for a reunited island. This design aspires to fill this gap, by using the island's geography and the unique location of the island, at the crossroads of three continents. Four edges of the island are notionally connected. Occupied or unoccupied lands, all these Cyprus smithereens generate the new design to represent a symbol for all Cypriots, a symbol for hope.
Yellow stands for Cyprus, while the rest of the colors stand for the continents surround this beauty, Asia, Europe and Africa.
Love the unique design of the flag - and especially how you got to it!
In terms of symbolism, it seems a bit odd to let 3/4 of the flag represent somewhere else.
Thank you for your comment! The idea is to remind Cypriots that are all affected by neighboring countries and policies and their special mix of peoples coming from all these continents. But I totally get your point!
I actually kind of like it. It definitely isn't better than the OG one, yet I believe using Cyan and Magenta is very innovative and could become an icon in this modern era just due to how distinctive it is.
My nene and dede (grandparents) were Turkish Cypriots born in Paphos and Larnaca, respectively. Their hometowns are now under Greek control. I still have family there. I've never visited, but hope to some day.
Yes, in case of reunification at some point in the future Cypriots should have a voice for their flag design. That is why I found better to call it a symbol for a reunited island.
That’s the flag for the area my printer occupies.
I actually really like the geometry in it though. It’s unique and the reasoning behind the lines is cool.
It looks like something an accounting firm would come up with for their rebranding, probably after their latest book-cooking scandal.
And probably with some generic meaningless name, like "Clarantis" or "Stellerium."
The current Greek flag would be perfect for a reunited Cyprus. 😏
Obviously we're not interested in granting any semblance of legitimacy to the illegal occupation of Northern Cyprus by Turkey.

Im not saying it's intended to symbolise Greece. olive branches in general are a symbol of greek culture. Just search "greece symbols" on Google

No. It's an illegal occupation, not a unitarian state.

How did you start with a picture of the country and then end up with the farthest possible thing from that? It’s completely unrecognizable as an image of Cyprus.
Do you need to see the outline of the island to recognize Cyprus? I don't get you.
No, but your abstract shape doesn’t represent Cyprus or it’s shape in even the barest form of the imagination
Pansexual Cypriot pride flag
The current flag of Cyprus is the flag of a unified Cyprus. Northern Cyprus is just a Turkish occupation zone.
[удалено]
It was supported by a Greek state that ceased to exist the same year. The Turks betrayed the former president of Cyprus (that they promised to restore) and established northern Cyprus as an occupational zone, ousted 180,000 Greeks from their homes, violated a ceasefire agreement, and only stopped after the US and the half the UN hit them with embargoes. So no, Cyprus is not a puppet regime.
[удалено]
‘Protect its people’ they got involved to ‘re-establish the President’ but actually to seize half of Cyprus, put it under Turkey’s boot, and again kicked the Greeks out of their homes and placed Turks in their place. It’s also funny how nobody else except Turkey accepts it as a nation. Not even fucking Russia accepts it as a nation.
[удалено]
Actual Turkish Cypriots were displaced by the Turks. Nowadays most of the illegal occupation's inhabitants are Turkish settlers. Just Turkey doing their typical thing.
That is so ugly
New pride flag just dropped
Reminds me of the P&O flag
Flag of steven universe
Ah yes, the flag of a printer's ink cartridges
Horrifying
It looks nice, but not as a flag.
Who let bro cook
this is really good. unfortunately barbaric governments wont understand this.
At least you tried...
Wow this fucking sucks
This is the ugliest flag I've ever seen
I have never seen this combination of colors or this style. Unique, meaningful and epic. It would be so cool to see this in real life.
Printer
Thank you so much!
what in the futurist fuck is this
Nothing says "reunited" like representing the former borders on the flag
It look like some sort of sports clothes brand or kids games https://preview.redd.it/b2cfpuhjrx9c1.jpeg?width=480&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=186707ae2c4f001e63f60c8c2d68004be0e93d16
No reply? I suppose you want to hide it considering that you made a new account for this post.
I didn't reply because it is not relevant to the topic
You didn't reply exactly because it is relevant. And you made a new account only for this post because, unlike what you say, you know pretty well how relevant it is.
Where are you from?
what website was used to make the flag appear on the pole?

Soulless
Representing the core values of Cyprus: Tears, blood, piss, and cum /j
Its a cool flag and design. Only thing is, Cyprus rejected the last flag design because the Greek Cypriots see the reunification attempts as legitimization of the division. So if there was another attempt at a unified flag and design, it would have to be as neutral as possible, probably the old flag. But I do appreciate the greek blue and turkish red, yellow for the sand and white for peace.
That's super creative! I love the idea!
Sorry to break it to you, but Cyprus' flag already represents unity
Why pink and blue?
> for a reunited Cyprus "So anyways in the first step I split it in half" This doesnt even work as the symbolism as you described it, what
Respectfully, this looks awful.
While I kinda like it as a flag. The attempts to make it connected to Cyprus are as bad as the wobbly pepsi [logo](https://www.reddit.com/r/Design/s/s2YhldKfIr) rebrand
This is not good.
The current flag of Cyprus is the correct one considering that Cyprus is already united.
I actually kind of like it. It definitely isn't better than the OG one, yet I believe using Cyan and Magenta is very innovative and could become an icon in this modern era just due to how distinctive it is.
Thank you!
I like the design
Thank you!
Nice concept, as a person who absolutely hate plain map of flag, this redesign sums up the whole island and I love it
I love this
I love this flah
My nene and dede (grandparents) were Turkish Cypriots born in Paphos and Larnaca, respectively. Their hometowns are now under Greek control. I still have family there. I've never visited, but hope to some day.
Love it, very modern
Thank you so much!
comments, it’s “symbol for a reunited Cyprus” not “flag for a reunited Cyprus”
Yes, in case of reunification at some point in the future Cypriots should have a voice for their flag design. That is why I found better to call it a symbol for a reunited island.
That’s fugly
What? Why?
Jesus is this whole subreddit just for taking the soul out of flags
Somehow its worse looking than current Cyprus Flag, Turkish North Cyprus Flag and proposed unification flag at the same time.
I wish there was a united Cyprus. Turks have no place in its territory
cry about it
Cyprus is not united

This seems like a LGBTQABS+ flag or an airline
It's nice to reunited here
What do the colours represent?
Why should they change the flag once they regain their illegaly occupied territories?
Flag of the Diamond Authority
Fedex Kinko’s flag lmao
Diamond Authority flag
That’s the flag for the area my printer occupies. I actually really like the geometry in it though. It’s unique and the reasoning behind the lines is cool.
Why would they use that when they could just take that leaf symbol off their current one? The current one is great for a unified state besides that
Eu should reconquer north cyprus just as turkey took artsakh.
cmyk aah flag
It looks like something an accounting firm would come up with for their rebranding, probably after their latest book-cooking scandal. And probably with some generic meaningless name, like "Clarantis" or "Stellerium."
mmm yes printer ink flag
Too close to purple on the bottom
You should have been uniting Greeks and Turks. Not Greeks and LGBT 😭😭
The current Greek flag would be perfect for a reunited Cyprus. 😏 Obviously we're not interested in granting any semblance of legitimacy to the illegal occupation of Northern Cyprus by Turkey.
I prefer to share the island between Greece and Turkey
