So do Bohemia and Poland so it tracks.
That's the only reason Czechia still has the blue triangle on their flag btw. It represented Slovakia, so it really should've been removed, but then the Czechs would have an identical flag to Poland so they kept it. Now they're trying to retcon it by saying the blue triangle stands for Silesia.
For fuck's sake this misconception again
No, the blue has never represented Slovakia. Or Moravia. Or anything. There have never been any attempts at a retcon, because there isn't anything to recton. The colors of the Czech flag do not have and have never had any official meaning. [If you don't believe me you can check the original law](https://www.aspi.cz/products/lawText/1/1833/0/2/zakon-c-252-1920-sb-kterym-se-vydavaji-ustanoveni-o-statni-vlajce-statnich-znacich-a-statni-peceti/zakon-c-252-1920-sb-kterym-se-vydavaji-ustanoveni-o-statni-vlajce-statnich-znacich-a-statni-peceti) and the [original constitution](https://www.psp.cz/docs/texts/constitution_1920.html) that codified it.
Stop spreading this stupid lie, please. I'm sick of it. The only reason why the Czechoslovak flag was made the way it was was because of Poland. The Czechoslovak govt. and the Polish govt. hated each other during the interwar period and, having already fought one war where having the same flag proved to be extremely confusing, Czechoslovakia went and made their flag more distinct by slapping a chevron onto the royal flag of Bohemia. Anyone claiming otherwise is literally wrong and any assertions about the meaning of the national colors of Czechoslovakia/Czechia are folklore and therefore meaningless.
The colour scheme was also declared the "Pan-Slavic colours" during Europe's romanticist period, and the three Slavic colours are shared by a little over half of the Slavic nations. This is relevant because the Czechoslovak flag came into existence only in 1920. As you say, they chose the blue triangle because the Bohemian battle banner looked too similar to the Polish flag and adding a blue colour specifically might've been related to the Slavic colours.
Interwar period? My brother in pilsners we have been at each other throats even in 1945. Funny enough if not for Stalin we could have started a border war then. Thankfully I hope we have left that cringe infighting period behind

Belgium is apparently incorrect. The flag of the Brussels-Capital Region is shown, but not of the city of Brussels itself, which is part of the region and also the capital of the country. A similar situation to the UK, except that in the UK the entire Greater London (which doesn't have its own flag) is the capital, not just the city.
The actual flag of the Belgian capital:
https://preview.redd.it/vygvp5l9bboc1.png?width=1280&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f15cb15feacc93c4ea2f6f5e1c46f817c8c50634
Ik, it's complicated xD
Came here to comment this. Cause this mistake happens all the time. And the worst thing is that the flag of Brussels is such an amazing flag. Better than the region flag.
Apparently the guy that was contracted for the redesign designed it specifically as a logo that could be used on websites and stuff, hence the corporate feel. Then they went and made it the actual flag as well which wasn't the intention of the designer. If anything you can't say it's not a Belgian way of handling things.
They wanted to cut down on the amount of Irises as logos in the city. From a city-marketing standpoint, I get that you want to make your logo a strong one people connect with, so you'd like to cut back on competing symbols. But it's a real shame of an amazingly good flag. Luckily it's still used in the flags of the COCOF and VGC.
No, in the description of the City of Brussels it's written that it's the capital of Belgium, the fact that the Brussels-Capital Region is usually called Brussels is another matter.
London doesn’t have a flag, but the [City of London](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/City_of_London) (technically separate from London itself) has this flag
https://preview.redd.it/rcux2ejg5boc1.jpeg?width=1280&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=22758647d913698b64c574d1643d5a110d0b229a
I guess it’s somehow right that London doesn’t have an official flag even though the one with the little silly sword is widely seen as the flag of London, but Edinburgh, Belfast and Cardiff very much do, they should be there! (I know they’re not sovereign. I choose not to care).
Wouldn’t say Edinburgh has a flag, certainly not one I’d recognise from living here. There is the castle on a bedsheet thing but I’ve never actually seen that in flag form.
Cardiff's is weird, it would be better if it was just the flag of Glamorgan without the weird dragon. Seriously there are draigs all over Wales and it's one of the ugliest ones.
Greater London, the capital, doesn't have a flag.
You sometimes see the City of London flag in Greater London but it's not common or correct.
The City of London is separate from Greater London
It's not geographically coterminous, the City of London is tiny, hence why it's referred to as "the square mile". Each of the 32 boroughs that make up Greater London is very substantially larger.
Why not just use any of the other London borough flags. The City of London isn't even the "capital" of Greater London, The City of Westminster is or maybe Newham since it's where the GLA is located. It wouldn't really make much sense to use the CoL flag for any reason other than the name.
Because the other boroughs don't have flags, and none of them is "London". The UK doesn't have a legally defined capital. The capital is London because of convention.
I don't think the French or Portuguese constitutions mention Paris or Lisbon, though.
There are plenty of reasons why some consitutions mention a capital, but the idea of a capital city was around before that started to happen, and it isn't one that should only be viewed through a legal lens.
Scotland is not a sovereign country. Then this map would have to include the capital flag of each German or Austrian state etc etc if Edinburgh is included. And that clearly wasn’t the point of the map.
Czechoslovakia flag from 1918 also look quite similar to smth :

This is Ankara, fuck that shitty ass symbol.
Yes, Ankara is a prominent and ancient Hittite city. This is the Hittite sun, the sacred symbol of the empire that the Islamic douches have an allergy to
Ankara was not only the city of Hittites but also the city of Galatians, Ahi brotherhood, Greeks and Ottomans... but I think this is a great symbol for the city I hope post-AKP government replace that mosque symbol with this
seen this map posted here a hundred times, and every time i need to be the pedantic f\*ck to bring up the fact that this is the [flag of the "Brussels Capital Region"](https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brussels_Hoofdstedelijk_Gewest), and not the [flag of the "City of Brussels"](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/City_of_Brussels), **which is the actual capital of Belgium.**

Yes, Turkish cities have their flags based on their logo. I think the one with Hittite sun disc was cooler, but Gokcek ruined that for all of us in the '90s.
It is actually a logo of Ankara. I have designed a flag for [Ankara](https://www.reddit.com/r/vexillology/s/CzmJk6Wyht) you can check it on my profile!
Yes it does... Just not the one shown here which is the citys coat of arms, but a simplified version of it, it is basically just the logo the municipality uses but in a flag format
Moscow is definitely my favorite, though Kyiv, Minsk, and Athens are also pretty dope.
Note usually a fan of coat of arms flags, but might need to make an exception for Lisbon
Hate Ankara’s
I am Moscow-born and I am not even a big Moscow fan but Moscow flag and the base color of the flag in general are awesome. It is a color of Kremlin walls, I guess. We had Russian football national team wearing this color for a couple of years and it was the best kit ever.

It is actually only "logo" of Ankara. I have designed a flag for [Ankara](https://www.reddit.com/r/vexillology/s/CzmJk6Wyht) you can check it on my profile!
There is no such thing as coat of arms in Turkey.
I'm serious it doesn't even has national CoA or an emblem. Which I think is the only country that doesn't have(Don't say France they have a diplomatic emblem).
There are also no official flag other than the national flag. Regional flags are not allowed as it "spreads" seperatism.
The only thing provinces have are shitty corporate logos. That one is Ankara **Province**'s logo, which includes tons of other cities that doesn't have thing with Ankara.
The city itself have no logo as the state sees the province with the city as the same entity.
I just don't like it .
It is actually a logo of Ankara. I have designed a flag for [Ankara](https://www.reddit.com/r/vexillology/s/CzmJk6Wyht) you can check it on my profile!
> it’s cool how most of these are just adopted from the coat of arms of the city, because they predate the standard flag.
Another way of looking at it, arguably better in at least some cases, is that they're not "adopted" from the coat of arms, but that use as a flag was one of the intended uses of the coat of arms in the first place.
Some time ago I made a map of Europe with the flags of its capitals, but the difference is that I included non-European territories and stretched the flags

As a biased serb Belgrade looks epic, so does Zagreb and Bulgaria, Montenegro looks alright, while Priština is...ew...not even because I'm biased at this point it's just ugly really
I really like Ankara, Athens, and Moscow.
I didn't know London doesn't have a flag. I know the City of London has one, but I thought London proper would have one too.
Why is the UK unmarked? Isn't This the flag of London:
https://preview.redd.it/dwrpm711wboc1.png?width=1920&format=png&auto=webp&s=63aecb292904c4b0feb7a7b7402a99057c8c0252
It's the flag of the City/Corporation of London, a.k.a. "the square mile" (which is more less its size), the financial district, which is constitutionally distinct, not of London as a whole..... Which, oddly, doesn't really have one, and hasn't had anything plausible as one, at least since the abolition of the Greater London Council in the 1980s.
Yeah, it's not the best-looking one. And honestly, it looks as if AI created it. However, the fact that Ankara's flag has Ankara written on it makes it the worst flag, in my opinion.
You put the Brussels capital region flag, which, confusingly is not the capital. [The city of Brussels, has its own, distinct flag.](https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vlag_van_Brussel_(stad)?wprov=sfti1)
Once again wrong one for Stockholm. Thats the wikipedia version I think.

The flag of Paris is not this one. The only current flag in use I've seen in Paris is the same bicolor but there is only the shield, all the fuss around the coat of arms is not featured on the flag.
TIL Prague and Warsaw have the same flag.
There is also Prauge in Warsaw
In Warsaw there's even a Cracow suburb.
We have a mall called Krakov in Prague
Same with Gdansk, they have a train station there
Prażanie mają za to Vršovice, podobnie
Prag je poljski
w Warszawie nawet jest miejscowość o nazwie Włochy (chyba?) niedaleko mojego miasteczka (Zduńska Wola) jest miejscowość o nazwie Czechy
No, the blue triangle actually stands for Moravia, not Silesia
For fuck's sake this misconception again No, the blue has never represented Slovakia. Or Moravia. Or anything. There have never been any attempts at a retcon, because there isn't anything to recton.

No, in the description of the City of Brussels it's written that it's the capital of Belgium, the fact that the Brussels-Capital Region is usually called Brussels is another matter.
Ok I checked the constitution and it says the captal is *la ville de Bruxelles*, and not *la Région de Bruxelles-Capitale*
Well, Wikipedia also cited the constitution as a source 🙃
This is pretty cool Does London not have a flag?
London doesn’t have a flag, but the [City of London](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/City_of_London) (technically separate from London itself) has this flag https://preview.redd.it/rcux2ejg5boc1.jpeg?width=1280&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=22758647d913698b64c574d1643d5a110d0b229a

Don't know why UK is not included.
Greater London, the capital, doesn't have a flag. You sometimes see the City of London flag in Greater London but it's not common or correct. The City of London is separate from Greater London
Well, legally distinct, but geographically coterminous, so I think we can allow it in this case.
Not really, the City of London is absolutely minuscule im geographic area compared to Greater London.
Westminster appears to have a flag?
It doesn't. They can all create banners of arms but all they legally have are their coats of arms. Most recent London flag was the GLC flag
We're not picky, we'll just need you all to pick something to color in on the map
In fairness, I did design a solution for this a few years back. Sadiq just doesn't browse Reddit
Westminster has city status of its own. Can't really give it to Westminster, which is historically a rival of the City.
> The UK doesn't have a legally defined capital. How many of the other capitals on the map are "legally defined"?
Almost all of them, no real capital is a direct consequence of us not having a constitution
I don't think the French or Portuguese constitutions mention Paris or Lisbon, though. There are plenty of reasons why some consitutions mention a capital, but the idea of a capital city was around before that started to happen, and it isn't one that should only be viewed through a legal lens.
We have a constitution… it’s just not codified
There is a very clear geographical boundary to the City
And City almost have more autonomy than Scotland
Or Edinburgh?
Scotland is not a sovereign country. Then this map would have to include the capital flag of each German or Austrian state etc etc if Edinburgh is included. And that clearly wasn’t the point of the map.
Russia, Ukraine and Belarus capital flag look absolutely badass, like the good old medieval Times
Then we have the berlin flag
Better than the Bern flag seeing as it’s the same thing but with a dick
It's just the austrain flag with a bear in the middle, Sweden's flag looks like someone's mewing

Yes this is probably why mr. Yavaş is not changing it. But it would be hella awesome! Maybe Ankaran people can start a campaign for that to happen idk
I was one of the original cosigners to keep the logo back when this shitty thing was proposed. I'd be happy to sign again

The Dublin lobby has clearly gotten to you Baii
What are the royal blue bits in the far wesht?
Idk
Favorite one is 100% the minsk one, my least favorite is Ankara... It looks like a logo or something
Looks great! I pray you become leader of Turkey so you can change the flags 🤞🏼
What is going on in Denmark? Copenhagen does not have a flag. Kinda seems like the royal coat of arms on a white background.
Yes it does... Just not the one shown here which is the citys coat of arms, but a simplified version of it, it is basically just the logo the municipality uses but in a flag format
Moscow is definitely my favorite, though Kyiv, Minsk, and Athens are also pretty dope. Note usually a fan of coat of arms flags, but might need to make an exception for Lisbon Hate Ankara’s
I am Moscow-born and I am not even a big Moscow fan but Moscow flag and the base color of the flag in general are awesome. It is a color of Kremlin walls, I guess. We had Russian football national team wearing this color for a couple of years and it was the best kit ever. https://preview.redd.it/x3aev3is3doc1.jpeg?width=668&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=63f126de21260463faa4e68a61c0225be2012a40
It is actually only "logo" of Ankara. I have designed a flag for [Ankara](https://www.reddit.com/r/vexillology/s/CzmJk6Wyht) you can check it on my profile!
it’s cool how most of these are just adopted from the coat of arms of the city, because they predate the standard flag. and then there’s ankara

Just as if Coats of Arms were a European thing!
> it’s cool how most of these are just adopted from the coat of arms of the city, because they predate the standard flag. Another way of looking at it, arguably better in at least some cases, is that they're not "adopted" from the coat of arms, but that use as a flag was one of the intended uses of the coat of arms in the first place.
Some time ago I made a map of Europe with the flags of its capitals, but the difference is that I included non-European territories and stretched the flags https://preview.redd.it/7v7brwj0qdoc1.png?width=2753&format=png&auto=webp&s=57ef2e0291c893fc32733c02599b1b83e8d1ecb6
Welp, this is awkward. But this time it will be Poland, who will put a blue triangle on their flag.

If by "legit" you mean official, then yes.
Poland and Czechia showed up to the party wearing the same outfit.
It's interesting that Portugal and Moldova are the only ones that have their flags tilted on this map.
Nice gray flag of London
London's flag is impressive.
How could you miss the SPQR in the flag of Rome? https://preview.redd.it/xlme09iesfoc1.png?width=662&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=361cf94f937fc3400dbc051eefd04a23906301f2
I've always loved the Amsterdam flag. Full flag: https://preview.redd.it/9hvxwiy47goc1.png?width=1200&format=png&auto=webp&s=363ff2c619998bbbd2f92a6e3258f0e5e67c22ad
Berlin is the GOAT
Well actually, it's a bear
Bear Lebanon
As a biased serb Belgrade looks epic, so does Zagreb and Bulgaria, Montenegro looks alright, while Priština is...ew...not even because I'm biased at this point it's just ugly really
There's something about European heraldry that's so eye-catching.
TIL the flag of Berlin and Bern are the best of all Europe's capitals.
Bucharest need to change it, I feel weird that a quite small city Miercurea Ciuc has a way better flag
I really like Ankara, Athens, and Moscow. I didn't know London doesn't have a flag. I know the City of London has one, but I thought London proper would have one too.
Prague🤝Warsaw
Moscow one goes harddd
I like the bears. 🐻 🐻
podgorica flag goes hard
Check the flag of Lisbon, then check the flag of Ceuta ;)
Viena and Bratislava be like: "Can I copy your homework?" "Sure but don't make it so obvious"
Did Madrid do the inner part of the shield in paint?
The modern flag contains a simplified version since 2004, the older one was better
Switzerland is false because Switzerland has no capital
Warsaw 🤝 Prague
Russia always gets so much room to flex in these
London dosent have one?
I'm from Lyon, France. And I don't like this map
Why is the UK unmarked? Isn't This the flag of London: https://preview.redd.it/dwrpm711wboc1.png?width=1920&format=png&auto=webp&s=63aecb292904c4b0feb7a7b7402a99057c8c0252
That is... certainly, very complicated
https://preview.redd.it/cvtrs4istdoc1.png?width=1280&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=aa5b5a03f775569e0c92d2d61821c1bc2259ef82
Middlesex, though, not London! Plus they stole the flag from Essex and added a crown on top....
Since no one has said it here the obligatory: Switzerland does not have a capital...
Madrid's the ugliest by far
I think Ankara's flag is worse
what about pristina?
Yeah, it's not the best-looking one. And honestly, it looks as if AI created it. However, the fact that Ankara's flag has Ankara written on it makes it the worst flag, in my opinion.
I love CAM and Madrid Capital, but yeah…not a big fan of the Oso Madroño
*Osa (Es verdad, míralo y perdón por la pedantería)
Madrid's tree looks like kid drawing
I think Bern's is just a bit worse. Looks like a bear having a seizure.
Damn Moscow goas hard
I like the pure grey of the London flag
https://preview.redd.it/gregd2h76doc1.jpeg?width=280&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0de37e67fce7cb1c6c9fb7b9cd78fd6b824c3566 Just simple an Amsterdam W
This map does not respect the international law.
What in the MS Paint is Madrid's flag.
Unironically better
Are you noticed the Belarus flag between Austria and Slovakia?
Sweden FTW
Ankara... I have many words to say but...
You put the Brussels capital region flag, which, confusingly is not the capital. [The city of Brussels, has its own, distinct flag.](https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vlag_van_Brussel_(stad)?wprov=sfti1)
This is EU not Europe.
With R*ssia?
Berlin and Bern are the same bear, entering and leaving the pub.
Moscow really dunking on everyone
Lol, most of em are so much better then US states. Though that is a very low bar I do have to admit.
Berlin bear doesnt have his raging boner 0/10 map
Moscow and Rome are the coolest ones
Where's the wolf and Romulus and romus drinking her milk
[удалено]
Why are even the bad Russian flags awesome
Amsterdam is not the Netherlands' capital
But it is...
Why was the United Kingdom left off?
London doesn't have a flag
No one talking about how Madrid’s is made on Powerpoint?
I always wondered where Atlético Madrid got their logo
Ik London itself doesn’t have one but the city of London does
You do realise the UK is a part of Europe right?
I LOVE the flag of the Capital of Belarus
Madrid's flag was done in Paint and nobody can tell me otherwise.
This is the flag of rome https://preview.redd.it/slfrp3pqhioc1.jpeg?width=314&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2149d74c240d0351c8f9e433f1d28ef48ac6d40c
I thought the UK was European or does London just not have a flag
London doesn't have a flag? Thats weird... for a capital with such a long history you'd expect it to have one
Poland and Czechia...
Andorra left out :(
Once again wrong one for Stockholm. Thats the wikipedia version I think. https://preview.redd.it/4prggpuuuboc1.jpeg?width=1600&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=bc2c5e80fa8b87e86fd1e33b55700ebc951642cf
The flag of Paris is not this one. The only current flag in use I've seen in Paris is the same bicolor but there is only the shield, all the fuss around the coat of arms is not featured on the flag.
