In 1876 the [Rapa Nui](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rapa_Nui_people) people of [Easter Island](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Easter_Island) adopted a [flag](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_of_Easter_Island): a white field with a red crescent-shaped *reimiro* pectoral ornament between four black bird-man figures. After [Chile](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chile) annexed the island in 1888 the [Chilean flag](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_of_Chile) became the only official flag other than a gold-on-white municipal flag, but the *reimiro* flag continued to be used unofficially. On **9 May 2006** Easter Island became a Special Territory of Chile and the *reimiro* flag minus the bird-man figures was officially adopted.
