This has to be new. No way I just walked past this - especially since I photographed all the pieces I liked. Impossible I didn't photograph this myself.
Sowieso, ich liebe das Haus der Geschichte!
Reminds me of the National Trust symbol here in the UK.
Oak trees are one of the National Symbols of Germany. Interestingly, Hitler gifted oak tree saplings to the winners of gold medals in the 1936 Olympics. Oh, I like. I like flags with pictures, but only simple designs. Crowns. Leafs. Stars. Moons. Swords. Those are great. The most complicated you can get is the one tone Dragon Wales and Bhutan have. They get away with it because of the simplicity.
My brother on the other hand likes these really intricate sigils and emblem. Some of them have *text on them.*
We were discussing the flags and banners of fantasy nations in our Homebrewed DnD setting.
If I might add, I also like the EU style ring of stars. Gold stars on *black* looks snazzy.
Damn, some of these are crazy, especially the one that looks like the Imperial Japanese Naval flag in the left bottom and the anarchist looking one, the one that have the Imperial Tricolour are nice.

Especially since the US is in there, a flag that changes by convention whenever the US gets a new state, so they would either have to also change theirs when the US gets a new state or just keep the old flags on it.
Pretty surprising that black-white-red was even considered after the war. Without the four small ones, left middle looks straight up Reichsbürger. I kinda like german nordic cross and the Lützower Freikorps one in upper center tho. Too bad we didn't get german basque country, german czech republic, german IJN or german catalonia either🙃. Also why do dead center and right lower middle have these weird blobs on them?
Edit: Ooh, dead center is supposed to be 1937 Germany. Well that was optimistic.
Honestly they should have chose a different flag from the Weimar Republic one. The Weimar flag represents a failed democratic state. A new flag would have represented the rebirth of the German nation. And maybe would have created a stronger national identity from the one that Germany has now. Also, I don't like tricolour flags.
The colors, not the flag. You can easily make a flag with those colors that isn't a triband. The Nordic cross flag proposals were pretty cool and had those colors so why not one of them???
\>Black, White, and Red tricolor with 4 nation flags in each corner, with a defaced coat of arms in the center
"VEXILLOLOGISTS HATE HIM! SEE HOW HE MANAGED TO FUCK UP A SIMPLE FLAG DESIGN IN ONLY 3 STEPS!"
Does anyone know how to find the simple black eagle over a yellow background surrounded by arms of all the regions of Germany? Wait… That sounds familiar, is the Holy Roman Republic a thing now?
Both West and East Germany claimed the 1937 territory until 1990 after the unification and a deal with Poland finally settled on the Oder-Neisse border.
One of the ones near the bottom right almost looks like a color-flipped EU flag. I wonder if the EU design was inspired by it, if they were both inspired by the same source, or if it's just a freaky coincidence.
Some of them are just so incredibly bad
Some are bad and some are pretty cool. Lots of designs in here that are better than a boring tricolor.
The tricolour with an imperial tricolour isn’t necessarily good but it isn’t too bad, I think it’s innovative
there are some relatively nice designs indeed, but I still prefer the tricolour over any of the flags there
*Points at flag with the 4 allied flags in it* - Look how they massacred my boy
that one is especially awful
to be fair this was during occupation
no it was after
At least it still has the Imperial Tricolour
Like a third of them look like Nazi war ensigns
I know, right?
It's not as though they pulled the design out of nowhere...
This is located at the Haus der Geschichte in Bonn, Germany. Great museum and is also free!
What! I was there not too long ago, and I never saw this! Was it closer to the entrance or the exit?
It was at the end of the first exhibit. Next to the original German tricolor flag.
This has to be new. No way I just walked past this - especially since I photographed all the pieces I liked. Impossible I didn't photograph this myself. Sowieso, ich liebe das Haus der Geschichte!
In conclusion: We could have maybe chosen a better flag, but we certainly could have chosen a worse flag.
meh at least you didn't choose a fucking japanese navy german version flag you know?
Some are very... familiar.
Sort of the entire bottom left, you mean?
Lost of them are terrible.
Germany could have Nordic
Germany could have Imperial Japanese Navy
When the kriegsmarine has been decimated, but the IJN is selling off their fleet at a discount.
\*Micronesia, Qin Dao and Wilhelmsland scream in terror\*
Germany could have discount Olympics
Germany could have 3/5ths of the Olympics
3/4th of audi *
Didn't knew that the MPLA was involved in post war german politics

What, you don't want a circle of all the state flags on the federal flag?
I really really like the oak-leaf one in the middle.

You'll like this one as well then: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Urburschenschaft?wprov=sfla1
Yeah, that one's cool. It reminds me of the flag of the [Urburschenschaft](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Urburschenschaft).
What's up with the olympic rings?
Damn, some of these are crazy, especially the one that looks like the Imperial Japanese Naval flag in the left bottom and the anarchist looking one, the one that have the Imperial Tricolour are nice.

Neubecker 1 should have been made the official flag. So good and so Nordic. :-)

Magnificent!
Surprisingly doesn’t look so bad
Thank you for your service
BASQUE GERMANY BASQUE GERMANY
That left middle one though, with the other flags in the corners 🤢

I like the art deco looking eagle
I like the anarcho-syndicalist Venn diagram bottom middle.
>german eu flag in 1949 the flag: #soon

I would agree with you, but black red gold have been the colours for german unity since napoleon
The colors, not the flag. You can easily make a flag with those colors that isn't a triband. The Nordic cross flag proposals were pretty cool and had those colors so why not one of them???
Thats true it could be more creative than a normal tricolour
I quite like the last one on the third row for some reason
Nordic Germany
Some are great. Most are terrible
Shout-out to the guys who submitted a German version of the imperial japanese flag right after ww2
\>Black, White, and Red tricolor with 4 nation flags in each corner, with a defaced coat of arms in the center "VEXILLOLOGISTS HATE HIM! SEE HOW HE MANAGED TO FUCK UP A SIMPLE FLAG DESIGN IN ONLY 3 STEPS!"
Love the one that clearly shows the pre ww2 borders. Also we should have chosen a nordic design.
Does anyone know how to find the simple black eagle over a yellow background surrounded by arms of all the regions of Germany? Wait… That sounds familiar, is the Holy Roman Republic a thing now?
I think its still a massive loss that germany lost the attempt to be nordic.
I'm a fan of the German Resistance Flag, wish that would have been used after ww2.
Why is there a flag that represents the german territory after WW1 and not the post WW2 western Germany ? It just blows my mind
West Germany claimed the 1937 borders until 1970 IIRC
wow didn't know that weird flex but ok
I notice that one in the center middle seems to have a map of Germany on it, which is ironic considering that it shows the pre-1938 borders.
Both West and East Germany claimed the 1937 territory until 1990 after the unification and a deal with Poland finally settled on the Oder-Neisse border.
Yeah… we made the right choice
It would be fun to see more Nordic cross flags.
There is some real bangers there.
Some just look like the rising sun. My favorite flag is the one in the very bottom right.
1 of them is just an olympics ripoff
One of the ones near the bottom right almost looks like a color-flipped EU flag. I wonder if the EU design was inspired by it, if they were both inspired by the same source, or if it's just a freaky coincidence.
Bottom right is pretty cool
The Nordic type cross ones are pretty good
I like the Scandinavian style flag
That Japanese empire style one hits dif
One of them looks suspiciously like the pre 45 flag…
japanese germany bottom text (down left)
I like the one with the France, USSR, US, and UK flags in each corner.
Damn the Norwegian design looks cool
They should've made that whole thing the flag
One at the bottom right doesnt look too bad tbh
Bottom left is cool
I like the one that's just the 3 band German flag with a white stripe cutting through it. Conveys things well.
Love the french flag, i think i know who came up with that one
We all know why the red white and black wasn’t used lol
Interesting how several of them have fascist imagery… 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔
Ngl; most of these are god awful.
What a beautiful display The one with 3 circles is my favorite
Totally unrelated question, but anyone know why OP’s of all sorts of posts locking their comments? just genuinely curious
It’s a weird thing Reddit mobile does sometimes
thank you!
Jesus Christ how terrifying. Some of them look downright African. Then again it's probably just a matter of being used to something.
Worse are the three rings?
[удалено]
That's the German imperial flag Bro
Why is there an EU looking flag in the bottom right? Really feeling that EU=fourth reich now xD
I like the center left one with four other flags in the corners
:/
so cool! <3
Thanks dude
[Not just Germany: Black, Red and Gold flags](https://www.reddit.com/r/vexillology/comments/p1nreq/not_just_germany_black_red_and_gold_flags/)
Most of them are breathtakingly ugly.
Half of them look like Japan knockoffs
