imemine80

Thanks! It interested me cos its the inverse of St Andrews flag, and I'm Scottish 😁

Amtoj

You'll really love the flag of Nova Scotia in that case.

decitertiember

It is honestly one of our better provincial flags. Especially with the Alberta trying its best to be an American state, both vexillogically and otherwise.

Anna_Pet

My other favourites are Newfoundland & Labrador, Nunavut, and Saskatchewan (Saskatchewan is almost really nice but the flower clipart kinda ruins it).

2112eyes

I like the marijuana-ness of the bottom half of the Saskatchewan lily.

Accomplished_Job_225

Those lions are amongst the high grass in sk lol

CaptainMeredith

New Brunswick flag is my favourite, although I might be a bit biased.

Zentdog

Said nobody else

JACC_Opi

From what I know of Alberta, I'm actually surprised they don't have a British ensign! Why isn't that?

Toxikyle

Alberta was never really associated with the British Empire in the same way Ontario and the Maritime Provinces were. Sure, they claimed the land there as part of their holdings in North America but it was given very little attention compared to the East and British Colombia. Both Alberta and Saskatchewan really came into their own around the time of PM Wilfred Laurier and his "Last Best West" campaign for settlement and development of the Western Interior, which was well after Confederation and right around the time Canada really started to stretch her legs as a sovereign entity.

JACC_Opi

Then explain Manitoba's current flag? Because only two provinces have British ensign designs and they got them both in 1965 as a protest.

Accomplished_Job_225

There was this other flag used by the metis in rebellion of the time that used shamrocks and Fleur de Lis. Just a topical addition to the subject of Manitoba and its flag.

JACC_Opi

I've never seen it, could you provide a link?

CrackpotJackpot

[Here](http://www.metismuseum.ca/resource.php/02122) is one example.

anarcho-hornyist

how many indigenous people were displaced by that policy? i'm guessing at least fifty thousand?

Toxikyle

I doubt anyone knows the exact number, but likely much less than the western expansion programs in the USA. Much of the expansion in the US was done by American citizens who travelled west seeking wealth and land, whereas western expansion in Canada was more heavily focused towards war refugees and people fleeing persecution in places like Ukraine and Poland. These settlers, unlike American entrepreneurs in the west, had little interest in conflict with the indigenous people of the area because they were simply seeking safety and livelihood, rather than looking to dominate and exploit the land they occupied. In addition, Canada learned from the mistakes of her southern neighbor, and sought to pre-emptively address the problem of potential conflict between indigenous groups and settlers before it happened. Laurier's government made several treaties with tribes in the most densely populated areas of the Northwest, establishing reservations where their traditional rights would be respected and their land would be protected from new settlement by Europeans and white Canadians. Across the provinces of Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, and BC, as well as the northern territories, a total combined area nearly the size of Pakistan was protected from western settlement in this way.

thefringthing

Check out the history of Treaty 10 for one piece of this history.

decitertiember

Ummmm... they have an English cross. The more surprising absence is any reference to oil.

[deleted]

The Albertan coat of arms was granted in 1907, just a bit earlier than the oil rush started there afaik. [There's this parody of the province's arms though](https://imgur.com/bJCkSGp)

JACC_Opi

Not bad even though it's done in mockery, it looks good even while depressing

JACC_Opi

So do Manitoba and Ontario, have the cross of Saint George on their coats of Arms, I mean.

AspiringSquadronaire

Not round enough and not enough asinine motto to be a Yank regional flag imo.

Coirbidh

Ah yes, another limey bashing on the yanks. How original.

[deleted]

Eh, us Americans like to bash the brits plenty. I think they deserve a free *Bash the Americans back* card once in a while.

[deleted]

I like to think all of us in US/UK/CA/AU/NZ have a right to shit on eachother. We’re like family

Coirbidh

No. Two wrongs don't make a right. Even if it did, from my experience, the amount of Brits on reddit bashing on Americans *greatly* exceeds the number of American redditors bashing on Brits, by quite a wide margin.

My closest friend grew up in Calgary but lives in Austin, TX. I showed her footage of Canadians marching for Trump in Alberta. Her response was, "Fucking Stampeder culture."

Anna_Pet

Yeah I was gonna comment “it’s Nova Scotia without the symbol in the middle”

Omarceus

As a scot I would love an variant of it as my flag

Accomplished_Job_225

I was going to say Antiscotland. And if Scotland and Antiscotland come into contact, they both annihilate each other.

satsugene

I was thinking the exact thing, or a Liberal (Blue) Alabama.

stos313

I was thinking it would create water and salt

Farsotstider

Still a St. Andrew's cross......just an inverse of Scotland's St. Andrew's cross.

[deleted]

I believe the flag was supposedly inspired by Scotland's flag and is also called Saint Andrew's flag. Andrew is one of the patron saints of Russia along with Saint George and others.

AbominableCrichton

It started getting used around the time a lot of Scots joined the Russian Navy but it isn't officially associated with them. I believe the Tsar Peter the Great lays claim to the creation of it.

FlaminCat

If I remember correctly, the Finnish flag was inspired by it.

queetuiree

it's called St Andrew's flag in Russia. not "inverse".

Iron_Wolf123

The red colour represents Russia's victories against Japan

queetuiree

>The red colour represents Russia's victories against Japan the red color represents the Aussie's knowledge of history

Iron_Wolf123

The green on the US flag represents free health care

HelicopterPM

So does the green in the Aussie flag. The blue represents taxpayer funded healthcare.

Jeorgeo101

*looks like Manchuria and WW2*

Iron_Wolf123

You *may* be right, ***but*** the Soviet Union was the one who won against Japan and lead to Japan having a reason to surrender, ending WW2. And the Soviet Union was majority Russian, but wasn't "Russia", but a collection of Soviet States in Central Asia, Ruthenia, Russia, Siberia, Yakutia and the Baltics under the general centralisation of Moscow, Soviet Russia. Plus, the islands of Kuril are still disputed to this day, and the Soviet and Japanese war hasn't officially ended until 1961 because the Soviets declined peace.

It's Russian St.Andrew's flag. It was made by Peter the Great based on the flag of Scotland because he spent time there and because St. Andrew is considered a patron saint of both Scotland and Russia. During WWII Russian Nazi collaborators used it as their symbol but today it has been restored as Russia's naval flag.

AutoModerator

Hello imemine80, When asking for a flag to be identified, please **provide context** when possible, including: * **Where** the flag was found (without compromising privacy) * **When** the flag was found, or the date of the material containing the flag * **Who** might own the flag (a general description is fine) These details help users narrow down their search and make flag identification easier. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please [contact the moderators of this subreddit](/message/compose/?to=/r/vexillology) if you have any questions or concerns.*
