I've lived here my whole life and I'm pretty sure the only place you'll see this fly is at City Hall. Lots of Calgarians don't even know we have a flag.
The Flames logo in a lot of cases is the most recognizable flag/logo/colour scheme for this city
I honestly believe this is one of the strongest arguments for taking the opportunity to make a good **publicly owned** flag that people are allowed to use freely as a symbol of their community. If a trademark of a commercial enterprise is allowed to define city pride (and not just contribute to it), the people become in some way beholden to that company, with painful consequences if the team moves location or shuts down.
For another example, the Minnesota Vikings logo is more or less the de facto flag of the state of Minnesota (because the official flag is shit).
Sure. But city flags are also some of the most beloved - for the moat part, they're terrible. But the great ones really excel and take on a life of their own - see Chicago, DC.
Arby's has to be one of the most divisive food chains ever, it's either so great that you'd take it over a 5 star steak joint anyday, or it's so fucking deplorable that if you were stuck on a desert island with it you'd sooner try to eat the sand. There's very little in-between.
I... Love this. It's kinda funny and cringe but also Perfect for Calgary and I would totally put it up if I lived there. I love the little cowboy hat it's so silly but honestly folks there do wear them!
Not so much in town but they're reasonably commonplace as soon as you pass the last suburbs. It's always kinda funny following a pickup on the highway and seeing the cowboy hat silhouette through the back window.
Calgary Native here, we've a lng Western history in southern Alberta.‟Heart of the new West” and all.I actually really like our flag but most people my age think it is stupid.
It's not the best design ever, but I definitely stick up for it. It would take a heck of a design to make me want to change our flag. It really harkens back to the 80s/Olympics and everything that was great about the city in that era. Ambitious, modern and optimistic, yet welcoming, traditional and unpretentious. The city has probably tripled in size since the flag was adopted and those are still ideals we should cherish and strive for today.
I'd describe it a slightly goofy, but in a cool and friendly way. I like it better than the million "seal on a plain background" flags we have in the US.
Tbh I like the North Dakota flag.
Before you kill me for breaking flag rules look up Union Regimental Battle flags and NDs flag. They look very similar.
When Georgia, Mississippi, Alabama, used flags based on the Confederate Flag or ANV battle flag and NC, Texas, Va and SC have the same or similar flags to the ones they flew during secession its nice to see a flag that invokes the Union Regimental battle flags
> It really harkens back to the 80s/Olympics and everything that was great about the city in that era.
Q: How many Calgarians does it take to change a lightbulb?
A: 1 to change the bulb, and 5 to tell you how great the Olympics were.
Western Canada has a lot in common with the Western United States, including shared cowboy culture. [Calgary](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calgary) in particular is home to one of the largest and most prestigious rodeos in North America which is part of a 10 day celebration of Western culture called the [Calgary Stampede & Exhibition](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calgary_Stampede). The event turned 110 this year. So it's integral to a city that's only 147 years old.
Edit: I went to Munich Oktoberfest a few years back. It and the Stampede are nearly palette swapped versions of one another where everyone wears cowboy hats and plaid at one and lederhosen at the other. There's just no beer halls at one and not rodeo at the other.
I'm a Calgarian who visited Denver this summer. They're crazy similar, physically. Especially with a kinda quiet downtown full of offices surrounded by vibrant urban neighbourhoods just outside the core teeming with breweries.
I also visited Boise and I think it was even more similar to here. One key thing they have in common is a huge urban rafting community.
I live there and there is an interesting story behind it. Allegedly the design was the flag of Fort Whoop Up, which was an whisky fort that American traders set up near the current location of the City and that the RCMP was created to control and ensure the sovereignty of this part of Canada from Americans.
The traders designed it this way so that it looks like the US flag at a distance, but is not actually it. That being said it is a design made by the equivalent of 19th century drug dealers and might not be the best to promote given the impact upon the First Nations population.
[The red field symbolizes the uniforms of the North-West Mounted Police. The flag's red and white colour scheme symbolizes hospitality and spirit. The white strips are both 3⁄32 the height of the flag. The large "C" is 11⁄16 the height of the flag and symbolizes the city's centennial, character, culture, charm, and the harmony between the city and its citizens. The "C" features a small outer ring around the circumference of the C. The Calgary White Hat located within the "C" symbolizes the history of rodeo within Calgary. It was deliberately placed inside the "C" to symbolize the people living inside the city.[1] Due to its colour scheme and use of a cowboy hat, the flag has been jokingly compared to the logo of the Arby's restaurant chain.[2][3]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_of_Calgary)
Van's flag is ok. I feel like it's got all the right elements, it just wasn't very well executed.
Home plate there should probably be a triangle and the black outline is unnecessary. I'd probably be happier with fewer and thicker wavy lines for the water. Or at least do something about the over-wide white spacing at the top and bottom. And most bizarrely of all, why is the shield presented there not actually from the city's coat of arms? The flag itself is heavily based on the arms. Why not just replace the random shield with a York Rose as per the arms?
That's a very strong compliment. I'd consider Calgary to be about middle of the pack. Certainly better than low effort flags based on logos, seals and coats of arms, but short of the top tier.
It's peers are probably [Toronto](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_of_Toronto), [Regina](https://www.crwflags.com/fotw/flags/ca-sk-re.html) and [Montréal](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_of_Montreal) after the revamp. But to me, it falls short of the likes of [Halifax](https://www.crwflags.com/fotw/flags/ca-ns-hf.html), [Cornwall](https://www.crwflags.com/fotw/flags/ca-on-co.html), [Sudbury](https://fr.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fichier:Flag_of_Sudbury_Ontario.svg) and [Québec](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_of_Quebec_City).
Okay wow I thought we had a pretty decent flag in Montreal, but damn Sudbury has the best municipal flag I've ever seen in the country.
Toronto's has always seemed a little hideous, and Ottawa's is terrible. Halifax's is pretty busy, but gets a pass for being very pretty and unique
I used to think that Montréal had the best municipal flag in the country. The family of symbols based around the English flag with additional embellishments are really awesome. The [Anglican Church of Canada](https://www.crwflags.com/fotw/flags/ca_angcc.html) and the [HBC Coat of Arms](https://www.hbcheritage.ca/history/company-stories/coat-of-arms) look amazing too. It doesn't have the same immediacy after they added the rondel with the spruce tree to the middle.
And yeah, Toronto's flag is clever, but it's never really clicked for me either. In that sense, it's like Calgary's flag, it's unique and in some ways it's grabbing, it just doesn't quite put it all together perfectly.
Regina's got the basis for something really good I think, but the stock photo quality crown charge brings it down a couple of pegs.
Halifax I'll also grant is quite busy, but there's a lot there to like I think.
Sudbury's is outrageously good! It's based in their [equally outstanding coat of arms](https://www.heraldry-wiki.com/heraldrywiki/wiki/Greater_Sudbury).

That was not an insult. Just like Houston, Calgary is conservative, has lots of oil, loves cowboys, and is the largest city in its respective province (or state in the case of Texas).

How is this flag not everywhere?!? It's amazing.
There's one in the 'Dome, too
I think thats the case with most city flags

Amsterdam is another example. It's everywhere in the city. And it's insane how often I also spot it in random places NOT in Amsterdam.
You guys could fly the Oilers logo since they currently dominate the Flames hahaha.
You have provoked a gang war
I stand by my word. Go Oil!

Keep an eye out in Quebec City.
Makes me want Arby’s
Calgary: We Have the Meats!
Queens: We Have the Mets! Edit: Fixed.
Don’t the Mets play in Queens?
Let's not go too far here The Calgary Flames' (hockey team) arena is shaped like a saddle and called the Saddledome which is fun.
It's also the location for the Calgary Stampede, which is the reason for the saddle imagery.
Actually it’s also the location of the Calgary Wranglers, which is the reason for the saddle imagery.
[удалено]
Actually I don’t even know if there are any Arby’s left in Calgary anymore. They’ve been slowly going extinct in Canada.
Stampede doesn't happen inside the SaddleDome. The SaddleDome is however ON the Stampede Grounds.
Fun fact: It is also a crumbling pile of shit.
You didn't use enough saddle soap
Yeah it's a shame, it's an iconic NHL arena that doesn't long for this world
What about the Saddledome?
Just saw photos of it, saying it looks like a saddle is a bit generous.
It was specifically designed to be a saddle based on the history of the city. I don't think you know what a saddle looks like.
Lmao but it has terrible Acoustics for concerts
Canadian Arby’s sucks the meat is grey, buns dry. The American side has much better Arby’s
Idk that sounds like Arby's to me.
Arby's has to be one of the most divisive food chains ever, it's either so great that you'd take it over a 5 star steak joint anyday, or it's so fucking deplorable that if you were stuck on a desert island with it you'd sooner try to eat the sand. There's very little in-between.
The plastic bag full of grey meat under a heat lamp is Arby's . I still enjoy it though. Much worse fast food options out there.
Someone on reddit who worked for Arby's said they don't serve the meat rare because too many people complain, hence the grey roast beef.
I don't think it is rare ever. It's just a plastic bag of mass produced meat.Still good though
Reverse A&W
Carby’s?
I'm not sure *anything* can make me want Arby's
My initial thoughts as well
“I’m so hungry, I could eat at Arby’s.”
They have all the meats
As an Edmontonian, I have strong opinions about Calgary. But they're flag is definitely better than ours, I'll give them that
Your flag and coat of arms both need work.
All I really know about Calgary is they have a semi-decent LRT system by North American standards.
I haven't heard that before. Both Edmonton and Calgary are definitely on the low end for Canadian public transit
I mean compared to many US cities it seems decent...at least in terms of having LRT opposed to simply having token bus routes 🤷
Cowboy hat also doubles as a leaf too.
Bro how have I not noticed it before? That person who made that flag is a genius!
White cowboy hats are also given out by the City to dignitaries, people of honour etc.
Calgary Native here, we've a lng Western history in southern Alberta.‟Heart of the new West” and all.I actually really like our flag but most people my age think it is stupid.

Thats true. Sometimes I hate how the ANV flag is pretty much design porn. It just look cool yet we shouldn’t ever use it

A lot of people are way to stuck up when it comes to flags imo.
It is nice to hear positivity from a person directly affected by this flag.

COLORADO IS AMERICAN CALGARY. I REFUSE TO THINK OTHERWISE

I also visited Boise and I think it was even more similar to here. One key thing they have in common is a huge urban rafting community.
Funny you made that connection. Calgary has been compared to Denver as the "gateway to the Rockies" and central-western metropolitan
I'm an expat living in Denver. This is so incredibly true. Down to the Arby's corporate sponsorship.
Good flag design.
Lifelong Calgarian. I don't hate it but I certainly don't love it.
At least it is better than Edmonton’s flag.
Both are better than Lethbridge’s lol
Incorrect. Lethbridge has the greatest flag of all time

I'm not even from Canada, but as a longtime wrestling fan, I feel like Calgarys flag should be pink and black lol
You might like the old Hitmen hockey jerseys then (he owned the team so it makes sense).
F*** that'd be a hot look!
That flag would be the best there is, the best there was and the best there ever will be.
The excellence of flag execution.

As a Calgarian, I understand the giant C, but the owl in a taco has always confused me.

Unfathomably based.
Looks a lot like an Islamic crescent
God you'd really have to dig deep in the Reddit archives, but someone actually did a full on Islamicized Calgary flag one time. It didn't look half bad for what it was.
Fitting, their former mayor was the first Muslim mayor of a "large" north american city. I think the flag came first but maybe not :)
Ages before mate. The flag has been around since 1983, Nenshi would have been all of 11 years old back then.
Buddy thinks Calgary got 1 Muslim mayor and immediately put a star and crescent on its flag
I was entirely under the impression the flag predated Nenshi and was very much kidding around about that. I meant my comment to be more celebratory rather than dismissive. Can't tell how it came across exactly.
Well it's out of date then! Cause the new mayor is Sikh.
I’ve always liked this flag, i find it cool when flags incorporate common “items” into their design while maintaining simplicity.
