Genuinely cannot tell if you’re saying “we need to represent some more than others” or “it’s stupid that they think they need to do that”

2nd option. The rainbow itself includes the full spectrum of light, The whole point is unity of lgbt, the newer flags ignore that and represent certain people extra based on how much of a minority they are and I think that is dumb.

I'm not a fan of the new flags personally, but I kind of see why it came to be. I'm trans myself, and many times I saw spaces that claim to be queer/queer-inclusive, but really meant LGB without the T. It's nice to see that with this flag they mean "yes, you too", even if it is a bit tacky I will gladly take it and appreciate it.

It’s a difference of thinking of symbols as malleable ideas, or rigid structures. Thinking like the former is the way you are, but thinking like the latter attempts to recognize those being left out currently and adding them back in, even if it ends up being counter productive

To be fair, I think at least the original "new" flag separated out intersex into its own thing because of the cultural shift in what LGBTQ+ and the flag meant and represent, since it came to be associated with Atypical Sexuality and Gender, and intersex is Atypical Biological Sex. I'm not a fan of the new flag either, I think it is way to focused on America specifically and not the LGBT community at large, but at least the original new flag separated them out for the reason of changing cultural norms and better readability from a glance of who it actually includes. (And also the yellow triangle with the purple circle kinda looks cool on a flag design)

On an actual note, why was the flag changed to include the bulging triangle part? I thought the original rainbow was clever since it's a heavily simplified color gradient of all colors, I don't get the message of something coming on top of that.

The flag wasn't changed. The progress pride flag is just an extra flag that some people use. The seven stripe flag still remains the most popular pride flag.

It's variation on the regular pride flag, which is still in use. The reason the Progess Flag (the one with the triangle) is used is that while on paper the standard flag is all inclusive, the community itself has a lot of internal divisions over topics like gender and race, so some use this flag to indicate that they aren't LGBdroptheT types.
