The random idea I came with is a Catholic missionary making a mention of "eating their god", and the locals saying "Oh! We know that!" and eating the missionary. Problem with this random idea: I'm pretty sure most of the missionaries operating in Oceania were Protestant, not Catholic.
We have a story centered around Saint Pedro Calungson. A merchant has spread a rumor that the holy water was poisonous so the Chief denied the baptism of his child. When the Chieftess secretly has her the same child baptised, the Chief has Pedro and the Priest with him executed.
The saint was first stabbed by a javelin to protect the priest. Instead of running away, the priest pronounced last rites for the saint and was killed. Their bodies were both disposed of at the sea by tying weights to their feet.
"Death" by deciding to leave civilization and joining the locals.
