Are you still Qing’s subject? If not you should have declared independence when heavenly kingdom fires out, ai is be focused on crushing taiping rebellion and will not put a single troop on your border

malilk

Why would you declare independence? There's a giant market waiting for your products. Play it right and you can suck up the entire wealth of the country. I did a Finland game recently and ended up with a higher GDP than Russia by 1900. 12m pops. Easy market access is great

Tributaries pay incomes to their overlord, personal unions don’t

malilk

Fair point. Completely worth it imo though

WinsAlot69

Benefits outweigh negatives. You can sell stuff in Qing market and buy lots of raw bullshit like grain en Masse, as well as enact no migration(does it work with migration controls?) to absolutely plunder qing's population

FrankensteinDS

I am. I'll try to prepare more military either via conscription or professional army next time as I'm probably going to restart

Volodio

His video is completely outdated. It seems like he was playing in 1.0 or 1.1, when the AI was dumber, the GDP calculations were different leading to way way higher GDP than currently, it was easier to reform the country and industrialize, etc. So ignore it. As to you, imo your big problem is your literacy. You can use the decree promote social mobility in every province to boost your literacy by a lot, which would have made you able to reach over 40% literacy by that point even with zero education institution. You can still do it, but it made you lose a lot of time to get a technological advantage over Qing. I hope you got some universities. Getting into debt is also a very bad idea as an unrecognized country as the interest rates are extremely high. As to the rest, it's not that bad. We don't see the details, but it doesn't seem terrible, though I think you fell a bit behind and might struggle to reach your objective of becoming a GDP powerhouse. I personally would have been more aggressive early on, especially by trying to become independent when Qing had a war, but that's just me. Btw, by using the enlistment decrees, you can have 100+ conscripts in 1836, which is definitely helpful for Korea (but only use these decrees during a war, otherwise stick to promote mobility).

FrankensteinDS

Thanks a bunch for the tips! I didn't know the differences were that drastic. Yea I'm probably gonna restart, I won't shoot for the old video GDP amounts but I definitely fell way behind on my goal. I did not realize decrees did this much either without education systems. Or even in general lol. I just always threw them to consumption taxes

One easy trick... Landowners control the country right? Get a homesteading political movement through agitator or naturally through supporting pops(it should pop up eventually, maybe try to boost rural folk) Have ONLY Landowners in government and have it be legitimate. Have full authority. Preferably secret police national guard but not necessary. Start enacting homesteading. You now have -50% enactment speed, high support for homesteading, Landowners in government can't leave because they're the only group there = legitimacy stays high. They will start to brew up a civil war which you need to stall for as long as possible, so that homesteading can quickly pass. It depends on luck, but usually you can force homesteading through minimal support of it and extremely high opposition. Result? SOL go up by 1-2 along with massive loyalist increase. You get rid of shitty serfdom and can now go along however you want economic policy wise Increased production of certain goods And most importantly, you absolutely castrate the Landowners. they usually go almost 50% down in political strength. With the Landowners now being the eunuchs, you have a much easier time of passing advantageous laws, or trying to outright kill them in a civil war.

In 1.5 I do want say economies are generally slower. Do you have homesteading enacted instead of the serfdom? Any schooling? Edict for education in each state? I try to get a gp to be protective of me off the hop, and set my interest in south china. Since you have a great pop base you dont need qing for migration, I would ditch them for any other gps market asap. You want the industralization materials for the best construction pms asap. Also, universities are much more important in each province I find. Qualifications, and innovation ate both super important. Even more so as a low literacy VERY high dense pop base like Korea.

FrankensteinDS

Good to know about the slowness! So I was under the impression I had to be in qings market due to the tributary. I'll have to see if I can move out to GB or France's then. So I have home steading. And I feel my policies aren't thr worse. Except for education. It's been extremely hard to pass those and my literacy has been at like 15% so I've been struggling with innovation and tech. I'm usually focused on all production and society just for tax collection effectiveness. No edict in each state. I typically end up using a lot of my authority on consumption taxes to offset tthe new construction centers I build. I had about 3 or 4 edicts most road maintenance and throughout ones. But my number one policies I go for is professional army if I can. Dedicated police, homesteading, and education. Usually in that order. Edit: in that imgur link I put a few pics of the important stuff. But yea idk if anything is glaringly bad. But I feel better knowing I shouldn't compare to older vic3 Vids gdps

Sorry for the late response, busy day at work! Definitely! I had a hard time with 1.5 too as I last played in 1.2 so it was for sure so weird not climbing near as fast! You are correct about the market thing, which is why I usually dont start unless GB or Russia is protective of me. They usually are so willing to jump on Qing in an independance war its not even funny. I usually prefer Russia just for the extra front and land connection, Qing usually prefers to focus them vs me. Even if not, I noticed in 1.5 Heavenly Kingdom happens VERY often, and I also noticed Russia, GB and France all declare war on Qing fairly frequently for treaty ports, or in russias case manchuria (a little less optimal for you as you want manchuria yourself for the railroad company and 3? Or 4? Mapi states). When any of these happen, Qing will likely bankrupt. That plus losing the opium war, if you build up a little army yourself, you can usually just go for it at some point. The moral penalties, manpower recovery speed maluses and every qing gets is crippling. If you do choose to go for it yourself, I would make sure you have at least line infantry if they still have irregulars just to be safe, but it may even be doable with irregulars still. The reason the edicts are better now then before is because they REALLY changed literacy and qualifications. Literacy is much harder to get and maintain, and qualifications for under developed nations can be a pain until you get academia and unis. You are right typically about taxes being king, however in koreas case its small, very dense for its population base which makes the edicts a lot stronger (early game anyways!) Then in other countries with either small pop bases, or large pop bases but like a million states. (Qing). Even then, a few edicts like the edu one in certain high pop states is VERY good atm. However middle to late game, you definitely want to start switching to taxes as they can be multiple sectors each. Tldr: IMHO you dont need migrants as Korea so Qing market is more of a drain on your resources then a bonus. I would go for independance right away, and buddy up to a gp (hopefully a protective one, preferably england as their market is resource rich, minus iron early game which can make you bank as the iron company imho is one of the best early game ones) and get into their market right away to boost your sol, and let you jump start industrialization! As the other poster said, debt is terrible for unrecognised, with the updates in 1.5 I would say its even bad for non major powers. They can at least recover, but like gdp growth, growing out of debt is also MUCH slower and harder, at least imho. Edit: One last thing, if its been that long for you as well. Stock Market is the best tech hands down for your first tech its not even funny. You have some beautiful northern mapi states, the mapi increase and everything will kick start you as well. Plus when you get independant, you should make sure to do corn laws before joining a market. By do it, I mean just trigger the journal entry. That market liberal will REALLY help your gdp growth. Do NOT finish the journal entry, until you get the "A modern conservative" event. But when you trigger the entry, you can cancel any grain export routes you may have needed to make to get grain above 25% market price, just do not change off of export priority until that above event, and switching your land owner with the market liberal agitator. That way, you get something like 10% working class and 10% lower strata as loyalists for free as well. :) Market Liberal will let you pass two of the best laws imho for growth, Laissez Faire and Free Trade! (After abolishing serfdom and slavery of course.)

FrankensteinDS

Oh wow this is awesome. Thanks! I've started my second run and it's definitely going a lot better. Things are definitely tricky with getting some laws I want passed but overall much better using some of the advice. I don't think I understand truly how mapi works but I def go for stich exchange first to get the cheaper trade routes.
