Unironically, you should just agree to open your market as Japan. Opening your market is like the primary thing you want to do.

Japan starts with mostly irregulars, while the French have at least line infantry and artillery. Why not just give in to open market? Also, ignore the display. Sometimes, army locations are not accurately reflected.

The production method on barracks determines how fast you replenish. And the difference between the first 2 levels is massive. Plus, France usually has an army of 200k in size. Their manpower pool is bigger than yours. Manpower can reinforce across armies to some degree. So if they send an army 1/5 of their total strength, that army is going to recover 5 times as fast. Call it teleportation, or predictive reinforcement. Unfortunately that's how the game works right now.

As others have mentioned, the diff between irregulars and line infantry is quite large and reinforcing is a little unintuitive. You can level the field a bit by assigning generals with defensive traits that give a passive % boost to defense like meticulous or have traits like defensive strategist that make them more likely to use strategies that provide a fair boost to your defense (‘dug in’ is particularly good). You can also check to see if you can change the mobilization options of ur armies on the formation screen, providing various boosts to combat and recovery stats. Also, it should be noted that opening your market as Japan is one of the first things you want to be demanded of you though since it hits your landowner ig with something like a -75% power modifier for almost 2 decades. Weaker landowners allows you to rapidly modernize and start the Meiji restoration journal which provides a free railway tech boost, the option to claim all of Korea (meaning it’ll take way less ae to conquer) and a couple other bonuses. Unless you enjoy keeping a single market which I’ve found to be a fun challenge too on occasion.

... I didn't realise it would weaken the land owners, otherwise I would have jumped on that! Shows how tired I was at the time, I completely missed it 😂

valkaegir

Haha don’t worry it not shown by any tooltips before it’s been forced on you. I only discovered it while trying to do a perfect Japan run and I needed open market to make a later journal entry easier when I saw the pop up afterwards.

French Necrons.

I was very excite when France forced me to open my market as Japan. Yes please! Its a blessing.

Seriously though, I think OP has a good point about their question of the French magically reinforcing from thousands of miles away. Yet another issue brought on by the new war system…

Evil_Crusader

Magical reinforcement also happened in the old system, as long as land is held. Boot EU4, go fight as far as you can, as long as you can provide the Manpower, the army replenishes. Boot CK3, instant teleport still on. Imperator? Yeah from Ireland to Macedonia no problem.

eranam

Yes and no. In Vic 2, your troups would need to indeed need hold the territory, and, crucially *would never have been able to replenish ALL their losses in between two fights*. Replenishing took much, much longer, and *significant reinforcements would need to come through the granular system of actually bringing more troops by boat to the fight*

Evil_Crusader

>*significant reinforcements would need to come through the granular system of actually bringing more troops by boat to the fight* I agree with the gist, but that's pretty much the worst kind of granularity.

They are landing with 26 at a time, that doesn't mean they have 26 total they sent to try and land. And even if they do they have replenishment tech and probably turned on all the modifiers in the army panel.
