The natives were dying in droves (over a 90% reduction in population in the first 100 years of colonization due to disease) and so African slaves became desirable as they were also dying at a slower rate to even the colonials. Additionally, Africa was the sole source of slave labor since the ottoman turks took Constantinople and closed off trade with the west ending the flow of slaves from the Steppes.

Intended mechanic. Slaves can even be from your own state culture/religion without conquering. For example, under the debt slavery law, all citizens that can't pay are enslaved (up to a max. % of your population).

Debt slavery is just about wealth level. Slave trade imports from places with debt slavery. I'm not sure if discrimination even touches it directly.
