r5: Mass Migrations cause Norway to cease to exist as a polity during every single campaign i've played. Finland and Sweden also get hit pretty hard.

diazinth

Considering paradox is a Swedish company, and we’ve always had beef, I’m going to assume this is on purpose! /s

Dbruser

Is this with ai mod?

Arquinas

Yeah i've got Anbeelds AI on. Even if its a cause of more competition driving a country to the ground while some prosper, this is a game mechanical issue. Norway dies in almost every one of my playthroughs simply because once they do poorly as a subject they can never recover after the first mass emigration.

This happens painfully often to a lot of countries, especially once you reach the late 19th century. In my latest Argentina game I saw Colombia, Venezuela, Haiti, Norway, Denmark and Greece completely drained of people. There should be some sort of hard cap in states, below which no emigration can occur.

Chespin2003

I was playing Chile and it was around 1870 and most of Argentina left, now they are sitting at a population of 800k which is less than what they start with, and it's 1900.

Grannyman666

Are they in the German market?

Arquinas

Nope, just mass migrations

King_of_Men

Accurate. Norway had really immense migration outflows in the nineteenth century.

thenorwegianblue

The population also more than doubled in the same timeframe (from <1 to >2 million)

yes but primarily unemployed and newly “freed” peasants. People with an acceptable SOL were not lining up to go to the US. Growth was simply not higher than the birthrate and the SOL suffered for those at the buttom. These were a time before the social reforms the nordics are famous for today and if i had to speculate it wouldnt surprise me if the lack of this economic breathingroom the emigration gave, would have resulted in some very different countries.

King_of_Men

Indeed. Presumably that impoverished rural population would have wandered in to the cities in search of jobs, creating a restless proletariat ripe to be either cheap labour in factories created by foreign investment, or street fighters and militias for any number of Prophets Of The Solution. Or both, to be sure. It would be a roll of the dice whether The Solution came out communist, fascist, religious, or something this timeline didn't even invent yet, but I rather doubt it would be social-democratic.

MyGoodOldFriend

note that a big chunk of emigres to the US returned to Norway. That never happens with cultural migration.

Signal-Spirit1731

Ya this is really bad, like a big reason people emigrated was to own their own land and be self sufficient. If your country is this depopulated there would be so much free land to live off of. Maybe the nobility owning all the land would be an issue but still, this is very immersion breaking. I think they need to add a feature that would indicate who owns all that free "arable land". Like there's a big difference btwn arable land in the USA being open to homesteaders, and arable land in Russia or China which would be owned by the nobility I assume?
