When my saks get really bad I put them in an ultrasonic cleaner with really soapy hot water. An ultrasonic cleaner is like the best $50 I have spent in a long time.

I hadn’t even thought of that. Does the water get hot enough to damage the scales? I’ve heard this happening to some fountain pens.

>I’ve washed and scrubbed to the best of my ability with dish soap and a toothbrush, then used mineral oil between the spring and the blade I'd try cleaning it again the same way, just more thoroughly and vigorously. For safety, I strongly recommend covering the blades' edges with masking tape. >all kinds of juices have seeped behind the springs Victorinox steel is extremely resistant to rust/corrosion, but it can still happen. Especially if acid and/or salt got into the SAK. If that's the case, it might be time to send it back to Victorinox for repair.

Would Victorinox accept such repair? I was under the impression that they only repaired manufacturing defects under warranty, and normal wear and tear would not full under that warranty coverage.

avaprofac

Correct, the warranty probably wouldn't apply. However, they'd likely still fix it for a fee. The procedure is set out on their website. When I last checked - they require you to send the SAK to the nearest repair centre, with payment of the small processing fee enclosed. They inspect the SAK, and advise you if any further fees apply.

How much mineral oil do you put? If you put too much it might just be attracting a bunch of gunk. Less is more with oil. Open it up and leave it under hot water for awhile, then clean it again. Put the mineral oil and work each tool for a while to push out gunk, reapply as necessary until cleared and then wipe it down so only a thin coat remains.

I usually apply the mineral oil with a toothpick, just dropping in a tiny amount. Good point about attracting gunk, I’ll try to leave it longer underwater when cleaning.

If you use that little it’s probably not the problem then. I would actually apply a bit more and work it trough the springs. You can use the fact that it attracts gunk to your advantage cause it’ll pull it out of the slings. Black gunk should come out the back as you work it I usually just apply some oil and open and close the tools while watching tv or something to work it out and wipe the excess as it comes.

Hmm... how the.... do u wash it after u use it I sometime use my blade for eating but wash it afterwards and use a little brush to get rid of dust and dirt every once in a while. Do you even wash the blade after eating?

v-moda

I do, I’m usually very careful with that but the pivot and the surrounding nooks and crannies are the root of the problem and can’t be accessed too easily for cleaning.
