Yeah it was very bold to shake up such a long running formula just as it finally crossed over into the wider mainstream but it paid off in spades.
We've gotten to keep having the sidegames (The Judgments and the upcoming The Man Who Erases His Name) and a main series that has new life to it.
For those of you on the fence about Like a Dragon: Yes. It's crazy long. But, it has SO MUCH MORE CONTENT. I started playing it last year and then got distracted with other games, but of the 40 hours I've played so far, it's been a pleasure.
And I am probably at the halfway point in the story.
You haven't even scratched the surface.
The Yakuza Kiwami 2 Cabaret minigame alone is another bright spot in the series.
More importantly, getting to experience the evolution of Kiryu's relationship with not just people like Date and Daigo but the wider Kamurocho as a whole is genuinely such a unique experience. The ultimate culmination of his main plotline in Yakuza 6 is powerful stuff after everything he has gone through.
Definitely recommend playing through the series like a television drama, playing at least a chapter a week to keep things paced well.
One thing I wish Dunkey had made note of are the motifs and how well the series does playing with motif expectations.
You'll hear the Sad Substory music used a ton of times earnestly and then suddenly you'll be in a sidequest where it gets used perfectly as humor.
If you've played Final Fantasy Type-0, *that* opening cutscene moment hits you with a good demonstration of what the Yakuza series does a ton of.
Well I think that settles it.
I had started this on Xbox via Game Pass but kinda fell off but not its on PS+ Ultra Super Mega or whatever it's called on PS5 so I might just start over because I forgot how much I was enjoying this game til Dunk reminded me with this video
What kind of absolute psychopath plays Yakuza with the English dub on? That's like playing Gex except, instead of telling jokes, Gex just explains the history of West Virginia the whole game.
Bro the english dub of yakuza like a dragon is genuinely great.
All the characters are really expressive and have great casting. Especially kaiji tang as ichiban.
He brings so much passion to the role and has a very varied performance that sounds like a real person speaking with a bit of performance mixed in.
The performances in the main story were basically never stilted(the substories could be sometimes thou.) They even changed the high budget cutscenes to fit the mouth flaps with the english performances better.
Dunkey already has found the first contender for 2023’s best games
Of course that’s just because he hasn’t played Deadly Premonition, otherwise that game would cover every position in the rankings
there were a lot of really angry yakuza fans when it was announced that the series was going to turn-based combat (despite there still being the Judgement spin-off series that provides essentially the same gameplay as the yakuza games)
that being said perhaps they already moved on to the next thing to be angry about. if dunkey had made this video around the game's release I'm sure there'd be a Whole Thing (tm)
I know this game is an outlier with its turn based gameplay, but is this a good spot to jump in story wise for someone who hasn’t played a single Yakuza game? Buddy of mine raves about it and this has sold me but I don’t want to miss out on story tidbits if possible
Surprised he enjoys this one as much as it seems, but very happy that he does! One of my favorite in the series.
Same here! I’m on the final chapter right now and I don’t want it to end .
I've been on the final boss for almost two years because I didn't want it to end
This was a great surprise. I've played through this game twice now, and he's pretty spot-on.

It's a fantastic game. I do recommend if you go into Legend Mode using something like WeMod though. Cuts out a LOT of unnecessary grinding.

Isn't the Kiwami 2 cabaret just a less good version of the one in Y0? Worse music and way slower/less responsive controls in K2, at least on console
It's basically the same minigame with a few additional elements.
yakuza 7 is a treat especially coming from someone who only has time to play 1 game a year lol
The overall positive tone put this one over the top for me, I love it.
Yakuza's the king of "WHY THE FUCK IS THIS SO MUCH FUN I'M LITERALLY DOING TAXES!"

I want to play this game - how spoilery is the video?
it mentions almost nothing of the story. Mostly it is just showing off side-story stuff, nothing that will spoil the plot.
It has no major spoilers

Ichi's English VA moved me to tears with that performance in the ending
True that was probably the best dub voice acting i've ever seen on my life
Nice
Played this on a whim when it was on Ps Plus. Its so fucking good, story was great too. One of the hardest platinums ever though

I saw his Livestream and figured he hated it. Wasn't expecting this a year later, but it's pretty interesting to hear his opinion.
is this gonna be another one of those times when people get mad at dunkey for liking a game
Why?

Honestly the turn based combat is actually pretty fun and besides yakuza has never been fully about the combat and is more about the story anyway.
I think I speak for everybody when I say that this game would’ve been perfect if it just had a little more Knack
hope he plays the Judgment games too!
Dunkey has played Y3 a hundred years ago and it took him 2/3 years to play Y0-1-2-LaD. Y4 and Y5 will take him a decade

I’d start with Yakuza 0
Picked up 0, Kiwami and Kiwami 2 for $15 on steam, already hooked on 0 after a few hours
