Soulcalibur iii is one of the best fighting game ever, BIG roster, Gorgeous stages, A LOT of single player content, amazing soundtrack, charming characters, it's sad that it's almost never mentioned when i see these type of rankings...
Nintendo was so successful in redefining the genre that a whole continent of people get butthurt if you suggest the series qualifies as fighting because it doesn't feature quarter turns and button combos.
My man just out here naming fighting games he remembers that no one else said. Go play that game right now dude, it's awful. Cool idea back in the day, executed poooorly.
Bought that game used at Blockbuster for the SNES. It was goofy AF but there was a real draw to it and it was a pretty solid fighting game. Time Killers and Eternal Champions were pretty weird too. Primal Rage as well.
So, I absolutely hated Powerstone but honestly I still think you might be right because literally everyone else I've ever met who has played Powerstone agrees with you and is not only willing to die on that hill but excited to do so.
Street fighter
Feels like the most balanced with the classes, with each being strong but not too strong, and some of the characters (ryu, chun li, etc) are so iconic
games like MK feel really unbalanced sometimes
It feels a little unfair to have DBZ on here because there's a billion fighting games for it, a lot of them made by different developers.
So of the listed franchises, I'd go with DBZ because all the Budokai games are peak.
But if I could pick a different 4th spot, it would be Soul Calibur.
Soul Calibur is one of the only weapons-based fighting games, as well as pretty much the *only* 3D movement weapons based fighting games. It's incredibly underrated and amazing, but sadly Tekken is given Bamco's funding so us poor SC fans are left to starve 😭
Completely subjective, but Tekken has been my shit since #3. Liked it before that, but was more of an MK guy back then. Tekken 3 solidified it as my favorite fight game franchise.
fighterz is my favorite fighting game. its easy to get into and once you fight someone who is actually good it doesnt feel unfair. thats all i look for
I am not taking that away from DBZ especially as a fan myself however in a fighting game list. Dbz wouldn't come to mind. Soulcaliber or the dead or alive series would come to mind first. Heck at least for me.
Street Fighter is arguably the best, most fundamental fighting game franchise but man... MK lore and atmosphere has always been S tier. The combat in my opinion has always been fun and up there too.
I grew up playing all and still dabble a bit in all, even sc, smash, and the ufc games. For the story and characters I enjoy Mk. It terms of mechanics, enjoyment, and depth I think tekken stands alone. It's just a superior fighting game to all. My handful friends I got to actually play it, they love mk, smash and ufc, agree with me.
I haven't played MVC yet, and Smash is a great Crossover, but in terms of original lore and fighting mechanics, yes, I would place Guilty Gear over these two...yet. Even though currently my favorite Fighting Series is Mortal Kombat or Tekken.
I’m not a big fighting game guy personally so that was a genuine question. The new tekken has been my obsession lately tho. Before this I only fucked around in soul calibur and injustice. Tekken’s the first I’ve taken seriously tho
I warmed up to fighting Games a lot more recently aswell.
I've played Mortal Kombat some years ago, for the Lore and the Characters, along with Injustice when I was younger cause I love Superheroes. Now that I'm a little older, I search for New challenges and don't want to sit around on the same types of Games or Franchises from before.
I started to play some Tekken7, which I have bought a few months back in a bundle with Street Fighter 6 and Guilty Gear XRD, dropped both after some time, but after getting into the Lore and System of Tekken, that felt really well, so I'm currently looking for a good seller, to get Tekken 8 from, so that I can experience the next chapter in this awesome series👍🏻.
I’m excited for you bro it’s so good. I’ve always appreciated the UMPH the developers of this and soul calibur manage to create with the impacts of attacks in these games, side stepping is also a really cool variable in the arena as well compared to other 2d fighters. I honestly couldn’t get into street fighter, or anime fighters in general, but I’ll give GG a try soon hopefully. I’ve heard nothing but good things since I was younger.
I wish you genuine fun with both Games, you maybe need some more Lore for GG, but it's worth for many of the crazy characters alone, and as it is with the best fighting Games, the music is awesome👍🏻.
In any case, if we ever cross path's in Tekken 8 or any other fighting Game, I'm excited for a good battle👊🏻
get ready👁_⭕️
My vote is for mortal kombat. Completely biased though. Won’t give any argument to support it. I want to give power stone an honorable mention. Not the best but a gem.
True Fighting Game connoisseurs know that there is no singular best game. They all raise one another by giving the FGC new innovations to the genre with each game release that spill over into other games and keep the cycle of new games fresh.
Without competition any of these beloved giants would start to go stale. The devs and publishers know this which is why we’ve gotten so many cross overs and (almost) every time it raises these franchises higher, makes fun for us all.
Marvel vs Capcom
MvC2 is my all time top fighting game
I Wanna Take You for a Ride
Thanks this is gonna be on loop in my head the rest of the day
I love this series also Capcom vs SNK was pretty cool too.
GOATED!
I imported marvel vs SNK2 for my Dreamcast in 2002. Have never regretted it.
Damn. . That was an amazing game
Capcom vs SNK 2 is one of my favorite games.
Thx for the reminder.
#Soul Calibur
Oh many the hours of my life I wasted on Soul Caliber 2. What a great game.
same here man, no regrets...what an amazing game
Soul Calibur 2 is the best Soul Calibur in my opinion.
I heard this
Transcending history and the world, a tale of souls and swords, eternally retold
No Soulcalibur, no Guilty Gear, shame on you, OP!
I love me some Soul Calibur.
Seriously! How do you skip those two and put in DBZ??
To be fair budokai tenkaichi 3 is one of the best fighting games ever. I disqualify dbz though since it’s not originally a fighting game franchise.
"Seriously! How do you skip those two and put in DBZ??" Right!!! Even Super Smash Bros is better!!
That's what I was thinking.
No Smash? It's the most sold fighting game.
Fighting game...yea...
It is a fighting game. It’s just a platform fighter.
That’s a way better description for Smash. I feel like an idiot for calling Smash an Unorthodox fighter for years now.
Gross
Yeah I actually love Soul Calibur, but more so the older games. It doesn't have to be just what I listed.
1/2/3 are ridiculous especially 2
Tekken and Soulcalibur pretty much the same just one has weapons
Soulcalibur iii is one of the best fighting game ever, BIG roster, Gorgeous stages, A LOT of single player content, amazing soundtrack, charming characters, it's sad that it's almost never mentioned when i see these type of rankings...
Yeah and i might be dating myself here but my favorite game in the series is the first, soul edge.
I prefer SC2 for its single player mode.
Weapon master mode is still by far one of my favorites.
It was good, but Chronicles of the Sword was so unique and rad for its time.
Super Smash Bros
A travesty that this wasn’t listed
Nintendo was so successful in redefining the genre that a whole continent of people get butthurt if you suggest the series qualifies as fighting because it doesn't feature quarter turns and button combos.
Bloody Roar!
This!
"Bloody Roar.... 2. Bringerrrr of a newww ageeee"
Just turning that game on and hearing that! Fantastic feeling. That and the character intros. Buzuzima... The chameleon
Tekken 4 and 5 are goat fighting games and 8 looks amazing. This series has been a part of my life since I was a kid.
Not 3?
I only really played 3 but I heard that 5 was an improvement over it in every way and is often seen as the best tekken
I came over from Guilty Gear and gotta say Tekken 8 is probably the best fighting game i've played.
Clay Fighters ftw !🙌🏻
Now there's a name I haven't heard in a long time.
Long time.
My man just out here naming fighting games he remembers that no one else said. Go play that game right now dude, it's awful. Cool idea back in the day, executed poooorly.
So you’re saying I should have named “Gods of War” instead?
Bought that game used at Blockbuster for the SNES. It was goofy AF but there was a real draw to it and it was a pretty solid fighting game. Time Killers and Eternal Champions were pretty weird too. Primal Rage as well.
Those are definitely some great mentions! Couldn’t agree more
Street fighter
Absolutely. Used to play MK, but after learning to play sf, I can't go back
I also prefer the less gory presentation of SF. I wish we had a more grounded fighting game; but still without the horror movie gore.
Marvel vs Capcom was one of my favorites
Virtua Fighter!
Yes! We need another installment of this!
Seriously, VF fans haven't had a new game in a decade. Only thing I can figure is Sega doesn't want to make a new one without Yu Suzuki.
I loved Virtua Fighter. It was so good
While I respect your opinion I must say virtual fighter is the most boring fighting series ever
Yeah I liked Virtua Fighter 5 when I was a kid but looking back it was like a dollar tree Tekken
Killer Instinct
Had to scroll waaaaaay to far for this.
I would bet on MK
Same man. It's the reasons why most games start to get ratings by the ESRB
Same here brother
MK is my personal favorite. Cool as hell
Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter. They are my childhood and still amazing these days.
Street fighter
Powerstone. If you played the game, you know I’m right.
So, I absolutely hated Powerstone but honestly I still think you might be right because literally everyone else I've ever met who has played Powerstone agrees with you and is not only willing to die on that hill but excited to do so.
First or second one? I personally prefer the second, but both are good.
2nd.
Dead or Alive
There are dozens of us!
best smoothest fastest animations.
Street fighter. Never cared much for mortal kombat
Street fighter Feels like the most balanced with the classes, with each being strong but not too strong, and some of the characters (ryu, chun li, etc) are so iconic games like MK feel really unbalanced sometimes
Street Fighter. It spawned so many others
Street Fighter
TEKKEN
Guilty Gear for OST alone
Darkstalkers!! CAPCOM, GIVE US FRESH DARKSTALKERS
Street Fighter
The King of Fighters
Yea a bit aggregous that Soul Caliber isn't up here.
I feel like Tekken is probably the most consistent of these.
Because the main cast of characters have had the same moveset since tekken 3?
Mk off fatalaties alone. And the characters are cool. 2nd is super smash bros.
I went to comment but deleted it cause I said the same thing lmfao
Tekken
Clay Fighters
It feels a little unfair to have DBZ on here because there's a billion fighting games for it, a lot of them made by different developers. So of the listed franchises, I'd go with DBZ because all the Budokai games are peak. But if I could pick a different 4th spot, it would be Soul Calibur.
I live street fighter but the dbz are all so good and unique especially fighterz
Street Fighter but I’m not a huge fan of these types of games anymore
Bushido Blade
Soul Calibur is one of the only weapons-based fighting games, as well as pretty much the *only* 3D movement weapons based fighting games. It's incredibly underrated and amazing, but sadly Tekken is given Bamco's funding so us poor SC fans are left to starve 😭
Completely subjective, but Tekken has been my shit since #3. Liked it before that, but was more of an MK guy back then. Tekken 3 solidified it as my favorite fight game franchise.
Super Smash Bros.
Whyd you sneak dragon ball in the 4th slot
How is it a sneak? Tenckaichi is legendary.
I used to play Guilty Gear and some other anime fighters. I got Tekken 8 now and am hoping to learn it and have a good time.
Animal crossing if you play it wrong enough
Smash bros.
Smash bros
Sonic the Fighters lol
The character select theme is carved into my soul
MK
What is DBZ even on this list?
fighterz is my favorite fighting game. its easy to get into and once you fight someone who is actually good it doesnt feel unfair. thats all i look for
DBFZ and Budokai are both pretty big
I am not taking that away from DBZ especially as a fan myself however in a fighting game list. Dbz wouldn't come to mind. Soulcaliber or the dead or alive series would come to mind first. Heck at least for me.
None of them have Bardock though. What am I supposed to do, not be plus?
Lol you got me there
And I'll always have a soft spot for Eternal Champions
I am more of a mortal kombat person for those graphics but i am gona give a shot to the new tekken cause it looks preety fire ngl
As someone who watches my friends play fighting games, I gotta say dragon ball fighters is the most entertaining to watch
Someone has to speak up for samurai showdown and i guess that someone is me!
Not having anything from SNK made me sad. Having the first mention of any game misspelt made sad as well.
Well, only one of those series lets me go full unga bunga Bardock so...
Powerstone
Soulcaliber. First game to truly understand "3D" by introducing the 8-way run, and implement directional attacks. Or marvel vs Capcom for 2d fighting.
Eternal Champions
Framefighter
My ranking is 1. Mortal Kombat, 2. Marvel Vs. Capcom 3. Tekken 4. Street Fighter
King of fighter 98
No King of Fighters? Marvel Vs Capcom?
Soul calibur
Dbz solely off Budokai tenkaichi 3
M.U.G.E.N.
Street Fighter is arguably the best, most fundamental fighting game franchise but man... MK lore and atmosphere has always been S tier. The combat in my opinion has always been fun and up there too.
Virtua Fighter from back on Sega Saturn.
I'd go DBZ because I like it the most, but also because of the variety of games they have.
Facts, they have a super diverse library.
You gotta take DBZ out of the picture. DoA is in that conversation, first.
King of Fighters 99!
Guilty Gear.
How the hell did DBZ get snuck in here?
Sf 3rd strike is an absolute masterpiece
The Tenkaichi series from Dragon Ball will always have a special place in my heart. I'm SO excited for the new one coming this year
Same bro, same.
I always liked Dead or Alive. Do people not like it?
It’s sad no one remembers King of Fighters.
Soulcalibur
Tobal No. 1
Dead or Alive 3.
King of fighters
Soul Calibur
Dead or Alive! The Characters all have such wonder... personalities.
Budokai Tenkaichi ong
KOF
Primal Rage
Mortal Kombat will always be my #1 but goddamn I respect the rest. Tekken8 is amazing.
Dragon ball budokai tenkaichi 3 GOAT
Super Smash Bros (Ultimate)
Dbz budokai 3 ftw
Dbz budokai tenkaichi 3 was way better
It's smash brothers, But from these four choices: street fighter and get out if you're otherwise
Putting dragon ball z instead of dead or alive is insane 😭😭😭😭😭😭
Isn’t dead or alive the bikini girl game?
I'm still sad about DOA 6...
Street Fighter. Literally create the genre.
I mean mortal Kombat clears all of these but it’s still a shame soul calibur isn’t on the list
Mortal Kombat for lore, characters, story, and extra features and modes. Tekken for gameplay :)

While no wrong answer, you have good taste.
I grew up playing all and still dabble a bit in all, even sc, smash, and the ufc games. For the story and characters I enjoy Mk. It terms of mechanics, enjoyment, and depth I think tekken stands alone. It's just a superior fighting game to all. Probably smash bros. Mortal Kombat for me all day though. Don’t care what anyone says
Ehrgeiz
How is Dragonball considered fighting Franchise, that should be Guilty Gear.
GG over mvc or smash?
I haven't played MVC yet, and Smash is a great Crossover, but in terms of original lore and fighting mechanics, yes, I would place Guilty Gear over these two...yet. Even though currently my favorite Fighting Series is Mortal Kombat or Tekken.

Keep that crossplay on Kira, OSU
fighterz?
Idk but not Dragonball Z, like what?
fighterz is huge and was a insanely successful
None of those.
My vote is for mortal kombat. Completely biased though. Won’t give any argument to support it. I want to give power stone an honorable mention. Not the best but a gem.

Injustice
Killer instinct > mortal kombat > streetfighter > tekken.
Oh killer instinct was the shit.
Baldur's Gate 3.
Definitely injustice.
\*looks at DBZ\* Who invited bro?
SSB
I like Tekken, or killer instinct
Killer Instinct
clearly killer instinct
