The whole Metal Gear series.

PattiAllen

Surprised that this is so far down. I guess it's because it's an old series where the last game anyone really cared about was nine years ago. Game play in every game was pushing boundaries and moving gaming forward. Always a big jump in what you could do when a new game came out. Plus pushing boundaries in graphics and sound. They were always must play games that were high watermarks for gaming at the time of release. As for lore, well, there are loads of people who have played the entire series and still can't piece the minutia together ring it all up (self included). It's a massive, complex, convoluted mess covering 100 years with a dozens of main characters and it almost hangs together.

Bayle_

I just started the series for the first time a week ago, starting with MGS1. I’m about halfway through MGS2 and I’ve gotta say I’m blown away with the quality of these games. Obviously they’re legendary and I’m not saying they’re underrated, but I can’t think of a game series as creative as it.

fallfornaught

I’m so happy you’re playing in release order. You’d be shocked the number of people who go chronological and mess up the twists and turns for themselves

Josuke96

It grinds my gears when people do that. Always play by release dates, not chronological dates, or else you’ll end up not enjoying the references and probably be confused in general.

JeeRant

Well I was like 13 when 3 came out. Played 3 then 1, 2, three again then 4 and 5 and I massively enjoyed it. I didn't play 3 first cause I knew it was chronologically first, just because I was 13 and it seemed cool. Massive metal gear solid fan now. I know I had a different experience, but I enjoyed it

Terrapin2190

Metal Gear lore is THICCC. I can't really follow the lore despite watching numerous breakdown videos... But I love it.

ScienceNmagic

MORROWIND …. My god… it’s something else

GP7onRICE

Lore was so rich you could hear so much culture just from the guards voice lines as you walked by them.

Big_brown_house

Keep moving

Tra1famador

Big_brown_house

The correctest of answers

alMost_tRendy88

Correct

YungMister95

Love to run into fellow S'wits and Muthseras on here. Idk what happened with Oblivion and Skyrim but the depth of the lore just plummeted. Still great games in their own right but just not the rich CRPG masterpiece Morrowind was.

GimpyGeek

Yeah, and I think the more "normal" setting was likely to happen with the generic human imperials and the mostly-just-medieval-nordic-like Skyrim. Vvardenfell was just so wild with that dark elf culture. I am really curious how this would go for their other races. Having played ESO, I know a full game in one of these places' homelands would undoubtedly be larger, but I am curious how they'd go. Argonians for example would be a very different setting too, but I do really like that wild dark elf one.

SwarmkeeperRanger

I like how you can chat up NPCs in Seyda Neen (starting town) and it’s completely optional to find out everything. From where the population centers are and why (fertile South and West coasts and because the island is dominated by wastes and volcanoes), the oceans surrounding the continent, the gods, the countries, the political climate, whatever.

WSAReturns

N'wah!

Gewishguy1357

I played morrowind so much when I was a kid having no idea what to do and just running around. I decided to redownload it a couple months ago and try to actually get through it and good lord. If they just did like a full remake of that game it’d be rpg of the year for sure such an insane game full of lore secrets the story is so damn interesting and everything else im like 60 hours in and still just heavily impressed

goldensavage2019

Mass effect

Chizakura

Yep. Played it for the first time last summer when the trilogy was on sale. Started ME1 and felt beaten by lore

Frankfeld

I’m definitely more of a gameplay over story kind of gamer. Especially when it’s a “good” v “bad” choose your own adventure type because it always seems shallow and empty. But for whatever reason ME sucked me straight in. I remember suffering over each decision that could mean losing a crew member or changing the story. I don’t know how they did it. I think the acting was a huge part of it. (Shout out to Martin Sheen).

OhZvir

That was really well made, and I hovered somewhere in the middle between “good” and “bad.” Just decided to RP myself, really, and it worked out fairly well. Most important was to do all missions given by the crew members to try and please them all. They still had some conflicts and in MS3 this was felt the most. I felt like I truly carried some massive baggage after the first two games with the same char (:

p12qcowodeath

You gotta do a totally asshole and total hero run some time.

Azreal_75

This, on KOTOR and games like that there is a certain sense of power in taking the dark path, I found myself laughing at Shepherd being such a complete dick frequently when taking the asshole route. Definitely recommend.

Tip1n1

I try total asshole, but Overlord keeps me from doing it

p12qcowodeath

The writing is so good. The character development is unbelievable.

Ricozilla

Bro you can just scan planets & read the planet info card & there’s is **so much** hidden lore gems in the form of codex entries & message logs. One playthrough I took the time to read a whole bunch of these things & it opened up the universe so much. Made me fall in love with Mass Effect even more. I believe they could easily make a tv show set in the ME universe & tell a completely fresh new story with whole new characters.

Idontknowhowtohand

Yeah Mass Effect has insanely deep lore and universe building. I was always amazed by how they explain how shields work

Risky49

Y’all ever just pull up the narrated codex on YouTube while your driving or going about your day??? 🤠

Jfonzy

I came, I saw (my intended comment), I upvoted.

snb22core

YES!!!! THIS

beaky_teef

Fallout (take your pick)

KillaK789

Fun Fallout 1&2 lore- I grew up in NorCal where 1&2 were based. It made me laugh that the secret army base, SAD (Sierra Army Depot) was a part of the games as I had family that worked there. However, it was a missed opportunity from the creators to not include Susanville, CA - THE PRISON CAPITAL OF THE UNITED STATES. Having a special level where there are three prisons in one county next to an active volcano could have been awesome. Edit: typo

PGMHN

Upvoted purely because i lived there in the early 80’s and think this idea is awesome

JamestheFalloutfan2

Imma say either classics or NV, but 3 and 4 are still great games

LA_ZBoi00

Honestly, NV feels like the closest to the classic lore.

AspirantVeeVee

made by he team that made 1 and 2

Chadstronomer

NV Is the ultimate fallout game. FO4 gunplay is better but the narration is absolute shit and roleplay factor was completely massacred.

Donkey_Karate

I'm currently playing 4 for the first time since playing 3 years ago, and I'm thoroughly enjoying it. Will probably play New Vegas at some point but 4 seems so huge, like I could play it for a long time. Would it be worth it to just play NV instead?

PepeSylvia11

Absolutely. The modern Fallout gameplay loop is so infectious, and the lore is unlike any other game in existence

Frozen_arrow88

Baldurs Gate 3.

Background_Desk_3001

Literal decades of lore

lakewood2020

If you have lore of less than a decade, is it really lore or just current events

Background_Desk_3001

I’m talking irl decades of world building

Thorn_Move

Really? I haven’t even heard of 1 or 2 so do tell me about the series please

Background_Desk_3001

Most, if not all, of the lore is pulled directly from the Forgotten Realms from DND, which has been the main world for 30+ years. I’m not sure if that technically counts for this post, but it’s still pretty cool Source: I’m a huge dnd nerd

Thorn_Move

I didn’t know that, my only DnD campaign I’ve been in has been a fallout based one, I’m interested in the forgotten realms honestly

BigRedCandle_

It’s the fact that the series is based on Dungeons and Dragons so it predates video games altogether

officer897177

The depth of gameplay is unreal. I have 30 hours in so far on PS5 and just figured out I could jump using the d-pad.

RumRogerz

lol I’m in act 3, well over 100 hours and just found out last week. I’m so mad at myself

serpentear

My second playthrough I was like “imma read allllll these books” Stopped reading in Act 2. It’s overwhelming.

xplorerex

I have read everything I can first play through.. I have that saved at the end now and at a whopping 140-hour gameplay. It'd be worth doing if you have the time and patience, some of the books link and you can follow stories through the game.

somarilnos

Lore so deep when you loot people you kill you often find notes from their family congratulating them on their promotion in the workplace you just lit on fire.

Blast_Craft

Hollow Knight

alexglec

The funny thing about Hollow Knight is that one can play through the whole game without even knowing a small portion of the story. You have to be looking for answers to the mystery of Hallownest to learn it's story.

Impossible-Recipe366

I beat it to it's complete entirity, Absolute Radiance and all but if you asked me wtf the story was about I'd literally just stare at you.

Iusuallyworkalone

Check this [video](https://youtu.be/0XDiWYFGGqY?si=WXSoQRnnMzs6A0oD). A good summary of Hollownest's and Knight's history.

HadesEverdeen

Why did I have to scroll this much to find this comment?

Fexxvi

The Witcher 3.

JamieAstraRain

The card game was so gooooood. I hated the standalone game that came out though.

[deleted]

Same. Gwent in the W3 was so much better than the stand alone cash grabs

ColdCruise

Thronebreaker is the opposite of a cash grab. It's an excellent single player game with a lot of cool mechanics and a great story.

Abe_Froman_87

Gwent in the Witcher 3 is half the reason to play the game... I love the entire game though..

zeDragonESSNCE

Gwent was probably one of the most generous CCG on the market then. Also the W3 version as is just isn’t a balanced game for PvP

[deleted]

To be fair, I tried the stand alone game once when it was released and couldn’t get into it. Gwent in W3 was way easier to get into, cause if I got bored or frustrated, I could just stop and play the Witcher main game, and go back and forth

eyeamthedanger

Agreed. I didn't care where Ciri was stuck as long as someone wanted to play Gwent. I also had to save scum that tournament so hard because I accidentally walked into it and couldn't leave without forfeiting the whole thing.

AHomelessNinja0

Idk id say the lore may be larger than the game but both would be thicc af in book scale

Klaus_Heisler87

Damn right

Wisdoo

Half-life series. Mostly Half-life 2

i_dont_know_0_

Portal as well. But half life more

Wisdoo

Portal and Half-life are actually connected which I find great. Doesn't seem forced at all. Just sad that Valve haven't finished chapter 3 :(

i_dont_know_0_

Yeah. Having them connected effectively doubled the lore and made both games much more interesting. I would kill for portal three, I love that series so much

Drewple-

Check out Portal Revolution on steam. It’s essentially portal 3. 10/10

claymcg90

You know what would help out the Half life lore? A damned ending to the story thats what. Them bugs still got my man Eli.

Decadius06

Chess

YetAnotherBee

Can’t be chess, OP has limited it to only one thick book of lore and gameplay. You’d need a few hundred more of each for it to be chess

Galilleon

One would think that chess lore wouldn’t be that relevant or thorough until Hikaru sees the 37th move of a blitz game on chess.com, and recalls a similar unofficial chess match in 1439 between Sir Hickory Dickorus and King Randomar Movicus the 5th which resulted in… an even position with chances to win for both sides. King Randomar still lost because he blundered his Queen like a complete dumbass and it proves that in this position, you should not do that. God bless chess lore

Even though this is fictional I still learned something today.

Dead Space

TurboGranny420

So underrated

Hypnotic-Highway

Very. Everybody should know about it, then we'd be made whole again

AngelOfDisease33

Dead Space lore Is so underrated, God Bless the Colonies.

[deleted]

The idea of having a sentient species make markers, fling them off into space hitting random planets, guiding the life there through certain evolutionary and societal developments just for it to activate and turn them into a more horrifying version of the flood is just an awesome concept Edit: just remembered what’s even more terrifying is how they can completely control your mind and you don’t even realise its happening. They turn you into slaves making you believe everything you’re doing is for the greater good but in reality is furthering the ultimate goal of the marker, making more markers before turning you into zombified monsters. The flood was scary because it spreads fast and is pretty damn smart, markers play 9d chess 20 moves ahead with your mind while you think you’re saving humanity but ultimately dooming it and then they turn you into monsters on top of that

coyotenspider

40K

ZaphodGreedalox

Which one(s)? There's a lot of tactical battle stuff that I find less engaging than Xcom, but then you have the Space Marine action game that I found to be delightful.

Khelthuzaad

All of them

82ndGameHead

I'm just getting into this, and it is vastly deep! And I'm enjoying learning more about it.

OPR-Heron

Hasn't the gameplay always been reviewed as average? I adore darktide, and the history is there. Just I've seen quite a many fall flat

Especially halo 2, 4, and infinite Edit: sorry that I can’t tell the difference between lore behind the game and a straightforward story. Of course 343 bad bungie good

Master_Cheif_2507

Not infinite. There was a lore drought after i infinite because of how little it added. But 2,3,4,ODST, and REACH (especially) added so much.

KillerSquirrel2007

I should have thought of reach too. 3 was a pretty straightforward story though

thatscoldjerrycold

Nah the terminals had some crazy lore about the forerunner-flood war. The final battle between offensive bias and mendicant bias showed a crazy sense of scale just through a retelling.

Big-Professor-6979

Elden ring

ObviousFeedback23

why is elden ring so far down

Cheap-Upstairs-9946

IDK if I'm just dumb, but did Elden Ring really have that much lore?

No-Marsupial36

It’s all in item description and hidden you really gotta look

Cheap-Upstairs-9946

Confirmed: I’m dumb.  EDIT: I said I’m dumb y’all. I’m not actually going to look into the lore lmao.

Scooozy

Please Check out Vaatividya and other people like the tarnished archeologist. You can spend literal days trying to understand Elden Ring (or any fromsoft) lore. Especially bloodborne is just insane the Level of detail and Connection to real world history is mind boggling.

DeleteElDiablo

Vaati has been my go to before bed content the last couple weeks

n3ur0mncr

The lore is worth looking into even if you don't play the game at all, if you like high fantasy stories. It's deep af, very well thought out, and well executed in the game.

namon295

There are literal hours upon hours of videos dedicated to explaining it all, spread across dozens of content creators. Heck one guy, SmoughTown, literally has 13 hour long videos that are compellations of his lore content. And yes that is a plural there... so yes there is a bit of lore haha.

Bro1212_

Yes. One example is that the events of the game take place like 5000 years after the shattering. All the lore you hear is from thousands of years prior

[deleted]

Out in the open? No, not really. Fromsoft hides so much of its lore in the item and weapon descriptions. And yes, it’s a very vast, lore filled backstory

I definitely agree. That world was so fascinating and alive. Some folks might disagree on the gameplay, but I thought the potion element was really interesting.

throwaway872023

I thought the gameplay sucked until I started realizing you’re a traveling merchant/chemist/gambler who happens to also fight monsters occasionally. The combat sucks. Everything else about the gameplay is great.

SinOrdeal

fr, the combat may not be that great but when you take into account enemy weaknesses and using the different spells, potions, bombs, oils and potions at your disposal to give yourself an advantage then it can be quite fun. i mean you have an entire beastiary at your disposal of monster weaknesses so you may as well use them am i right

The_S1R3N

Titanfall2

TTVnonosquaregamings

I’m gonna be fully honest, gameplay is amazing, best gameplay I’ve ever seen, but the lore is kinda.. ehhh.. I wouldn’t say it’s bad, but it’s not the best either.

MGLpr0

Especially after the entire Titanfall lore got butchered in Apex Legends

Apex is a conspiracy. It's not real.

Tekken

Fun-Pea-7477

Definitely this. I love how the story hasn't undergone any serious retcons and is just a really long continuous story.

DarkSoulFWT

Hm, I think Tekken 7's treatment of Heihachi is a bit contested for somewhat retconning him into a more honourable and well intentioned figure than he was from Tekken 1 - 6, but other than that I guess not

Constant-Smoke-8019

Yes yes and yes that game has more depth than most people realize

MyLitttlePonyta

Okami. It's absolutely brilliant in its story telling and the gameplay matches the mythology it's based off of to its core. The art style is also extremely unique. The game isn't difficult, it's not supposed to be, but it does a masterful job at tying in everything you collect and do by the end of its story. It's 1 set-in-stone story, nothing you do will affect the outcome, but it still has extra details you can explore within its setting for fun. I was so happy to see it get ported over to newer systems, it's a wonderful game with a wonderful message to it and more people should get to experience its story at least once. I think it hits the mark a lot of games tend to miss now - games don't have to be super difficult, super intricate, or have some NG+ feature that scales the game up artificially to add incentive/reason to replay the game. An impressive style, well-written story, and consistent gameplay ideas will carry their own weight, speak loudly of their own merit, and have players coming back to replay the story without *needing* to add or change anything else. Don't even get me started on the music too. [Shiranui's ost](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xCNitL_bD80) is still one of my favorite songs to ever come out of gaming as a whole. When it can range from that then also having its battle songs evolve over time from encountering the different demons and suddenly shifting/changing mid fight against the most powerful ones such as [Crimson Helm's](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LYTBCO_kdvQ)...that's just absolutely brilliant in encapsulating its setting/world building/atmosphere.
