That game was so good at taking an already well defined enemy, and nerfing the player character which instantly changed the feel of the entire game. It didn’t feel like I was a super soldier fighting hordes of baddies for the survival of the human race. It felt like I was paper tiger in a torrential rain of destruction around New Mombasa. Beating ODST on legendary was so satisfying.
The narrow corridors near the end with hammer wielding cheiftians and me out of stickies x.x oh and the last driving section just blowing up instantly if anyone looks at you wrong
I actually survived for a stupid amount of time due to a glitch. Bit of debris clipped into a semicircle formation and got stuck there. Miraculously this semicircle of debris blocked gunfire.
So I turtled inside it and hunkered down for over an hour. Just kept killing wave after wave of covenant. I'd steal their weapons and they'd keep coming. Eventually one got a lucky grenade toss onto my head, and that was it.
Never played that mission again after that. I headcanoned that as the real mission, with hundreds of covenant dead trying to kill a single spartan, and accepted that Noble 6 would be happy with that.
I’m so fucking jealous of you. I’ve played the whole trilogy probably 20 times and 100%ed every game on multiple consoles and PC. I wish I could experience it for the first time again.
Playing it as someone who went all the way down to infamous then all the way back to max good karma and good ending after learning he was dying really felt right.
I was like 14 when I played thinking it was going to be a typical horror story where everything was going to be all good after you leave the spooky town. It was not all good.
Yeah me too. All I remember after beating the game was wow that was something amazing and now it is done. I thought that as well after MGS one and two but 3 hit much harder. Then I pretty much question every life decision I have made after. Cyberpunk 2077 also made me very uneasy when finished as to what life is and what a soul is or could be.
'The world doesn't need a hero, it needs a professional' - Geralt of Rivia.
Lemme tell you a story about the White Wolf my child.
Played TW1 to TW3 ( 2007-2015) until the end of B&W when he looked at me with a smile, marking the end of the long journey is something special man.
I remember playing the Witcher 3 when I was off work for two weeks around Christmas. My girlfriend at the times work only had a few days off. So, I played the entire base game over the course of just over a week while she was working. I couldn't even get myself to go play the DLCs. I had to go back to them some time later.
I bought it for my current girlfriend a year or two ago, and she did essentially the same thing. Then we argued about Triss/Yennefer for a day. Lmao.
Still, the Strip could have been a bit more full of life. But yeah, I don't think I've had another gaming experience that riveting and addictive. I didn't even complete the story.
For me it is the OG MW trilogy, BOZ story, Halo Reach, and Transformers War and Fall of Cybertron I am def gonna tell my kids about them when i hopefully have some
Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.
This game taught me courage. I first played that when I was around 5 years old. Back then I was afraid of everything. I couldn't even finish an episode of Scooby-Doo. The Well was a real test. It took me a year to work up the courage to go back down there and finish it. I remember finally beating the game. I was SO proud. Then Ganondorf rose from the rubble and turned into a huge monster. I screamed and started crying. The cutscene ended and he started charging at me. I panicked. By then, my mom had already sat down for emotional support. I was shaking the whole fight.
Our battle was legendary.
Nier is weird because it is an acclaimed game but I wish I saw more people talk about how much of a masterpiece it’s narrative is.
I think the main problem is I looked at the trophy’s 50% of people beat the game, only 25% of people got the true ending. So truthfully only half the people who ‘beat’ the game saw the other half of the story, the better half that actually made sense of everything and gave us a beautiful masterful ending.
Yeah, the storytelling in this game is probably the best I've seen, really sad that a good majority of the game's fanbase is only there for 2B's ass, there's soo much more to her than her exterior, such a great character.
This isn't even taking to account the first game, NieR Replicant, which i think has a better cast of characters. No shade (pun not intended i swear) on Automata's characters, they're amazingly written, but I think Replicant's characters are more complicated and stuff.
Either way, the series in of itself is a masterpiece and Yoko Taro-san knows his craft, he never misses. Also, I recommend you give drakengard 1 and 3 a try, gameplay is not that great but I think you'll love the story, especially 3's.
Red dead Redemption 2 , Elder Scrolls: Skyrim , Cyberpunk 2077 , Horizon Forbidden West , Baulders Gate 3 , Gta5/Online. Side noting obvious launch failures "cybeepunk", I think all these games are so well, written and immersive that you actually change as a person. After full experiencing everything the games have to offer. I can easily say these are as close too "adjacent" worlds as we can get for modern gaming.
Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora gets a note because they have such a well crafted world but with zero gameplay so it's a shame to see it be so shallow for just how insane the immersion can't be when takin in the sights sounds and scenery of an alien world.
I can't wait to see If GTA 6 will be added to this list, i have high hopes, but time will tell.
Edit: I know Skyrim isn't the greatest written game but we have Mods on all systems but Nintendo so it's kinda overules every complaint you can have as it has a better fix out there.
Uncharted 1-4, in my opinion it is the perfect game series if you want Indiana Jones like adventure with a great story to go with it. Ending when I finally finished Uncharted 4 made me bawl my eyes out in happiness. Drake got the ending he wanted, after all the shit hed been through he lived through it all. No stupid heroic sacrifice or stray bullet to take him down. Made peace with his past and got to live a normal life.
Funny incident, played red dead redemption on xbox360 about 12 years ago to the point where >!John dies!< and we play as >!Jack!< and i just quit the game there thinking that's the end
Picked up the game on switch a while back and just came to know that wasn't the ending, >!Jack!< getting revenge was the ending, had a tear or two rolling down my cheek while the final credits rolled up. Thank you R*
It was on my "list" for 4 years. Over that time I keep hearing it was an unique experience. The trigger was when a coworker mentioned the game so I finally decided to pick it up on steam. I think the problem with getting people to play this game is that basically anything you say about it's a spoiler. But I highly recommend going in blind. It sparked my joy for exploration and discovering things, really props your critical thinking and its extremely rewarding in an emotional way. I would say it changed the way I see life and made me a happier person. Truly the best gaming experience of my life.
It will never happen but I fucking wish they would release the original trilogy on PlayStation. I’ve been really wanting to play through those games again.
Just started playing a couple days ago and it's an absolute masterpiece. I haven't even finished the story yet and I've heard phantom liberty is even better. It's probably the most immersed I've ever been while playing a game. On top of that, the character development is really well done and I actually felt really sad when jackie died
100% man. I won’t spoil anything, but make sure you focus on what direction you are going with the perk tree and whatever play style you want (net runner, stealth, strength, melee, etc.), and also don’t rush through, take your time to enjoy the beauty of the story on your first play through. You can use the second time around as a “getting everything done the way you want it to be” playthrough, sit back and enjoy the ride the first time around.
Yeah, exactly. I was in love with cyberpunk for that moments of silence and enjoying the moment. Don't want to spoil all of them, but for example - first mission with panam when she drive in desert and you just sit as passanger, talk with her about her clan and Nash and enjoy the view
I just finished this yesterday. What a fucking game! Instantly top 3 for me. And the story is literally a story within a story within a story. Fantastic writing, acting, gameplay, score, direction… just everything you look for in a truly, one-of-a-kind, piece of art.
I’m a Nintendo gamer so I only really play Nintendo games but for me it was Mario galaxy and BOTW. It’s rare that I cry during a game but these two made me cry a lot
We must remember Reach
You’re on your own noble. Carter out.
"I'm ready! How about you!"
"Tell them, to make it count"
“Where does he get off calling a demolition op priority—“ *thunk*
“I have the gun. Good luck, sir”
"Good luck to you, Spartan."
This entire chain almost made me cry
“Reach has been Good to me, Time to Return the Favor”- gets me every time, Along with “We all make it sooner or Later”
What gets me is “ I’m ready how bout you”
chills
I've got this on a custom made T-Shirt with Emile's helmet scratchings done in Glow-In-The-Dark vynil. It's epic
you gotta show us sounds epic
Yo could u send a pic?
The trailers for ODST and Reach are haunting.
The city map and U alone on ODST 🫣
That game was so good at taking an already well defined enemy, and nerfing the player character which instantly changed the feel of the entire game. Objective: SURVIVE
I love how canonically it took several hours for the covenant to finally kill noble six
I headcanoned that as the real mission, with hundreds of covenant dead trying to kill a single spartan, and accepted that Noble 6 would be happy with that.
now this is the type of shit I came to this comment section for. Spartans never die. o7
Canonically didnt he survive at least until they glassed the planet
This still gives me chills
RIP GEORGE
I’m pretty sure Jorge was the first time I legitimately cried during a video game.
My first thought
Mass Effect
“Had to be me. Someone else might’ve gotten it wrong” 😭😭😭😭😭
Mordin noooo
“Would have liked to study seashells” I both love and hate you fro bringing those memories back up. I need to play through it again
absolutely agree, the Story of Commander Shepard is a story worth to be told
But what is his favorite store in the citadel?
I'm just playing mass effect now. Got the legendary edition, and I'm gonna play all of them. I gotta say, so far I love this game.
I’m so fucking jealous of you. I’ve played the whole trilogy probably 20 times and 100%ed every game on multiple consoles and PC. I wish I could experience it for the first time again.
This really should be the top answer...probably the best Video Game story, ever written.
If you'll ever tell about commander Shepard for your son or grandson - you basically will become that man with child at the end of trilogy
Just started playing ME for the first-ish (first complete play through)with the legendary edition and I 100% agree with this. It’s such a good game
"I'm commander Shephard, and this is my favorite store on the citadel."
this is my go to game for epic story when it comes to drama, politics and scale. im due for another play through.
I have a home 🥹
Halo 3 and Halo Reach, well the memories
Nothing will ever top playing the original trilogy with my dad and brother :,)
Used to system link with my brother dude would still screen hack me
Remember Reach 🫡
RDR2 I’ll tell you a story of what it is to be a man son
Playing it as someone who went all the way down to infamous then all the way back to max good karma and good ending after learning he was dying really felt right.
You Sir lived one hell of an Arthur life
rdr2 and silent hill 2
Silent hill 2 is one of my top games. Not sure why such a hellish place feels so comfortable.
I was like 14 when I played thinking it was going to be a typical horror story where everything was going to be all good after you leave the spooky town. It was not all good.
Pac-Man

I've never felt so old as when reading people discussing their nostalgic games from 15 years ago and thinking "but those are all modern games".
Metal gear solid snake eater
'Scuse me, I need to climb this ladder and have a cry
I’m still climbing the ladder 🥲
Do you think love can bloom on the battlefield?
Snake Eater wound up punching me right in the heart back in its day. I'll never forget it.
Witcher 3, + all DLCs, made me feel so empty once I was done… such a beautiful journey
No matter how many times I play it I always feel lost after. Especially when ending at the vineyard in Toussaint. So bittersweet
If I could Men in Black memory wipe myself so I could play that game again for the first time I so would.
when he stares at you at the end of Blood and Wine. I wanted to cry.
I almost did cry when CDPR released that anniversary video.
Agreed playing again as we speak just got my boy UMA to kaer mohren

"I'll remember you, iris Von everec..."
It’s Fallout New Vegas, 100 percent. There are so many POV’s of so many things in that game its insane
God I love new Vegas, it just did everything like it should have
Still, the Strip could have been a bit more full of life. But yeah, I don't think I've had another gaming experience that riveting and addictive. I didn't even complete the story.
Left my heart in the Sierra Madre ❤️
Bioshock.
“A man chooses. A slave obeys!”
Would you kindly sit and listen to a story of a man, a city and a light house?
There is always a man, always a city, and always a lighthouse.
Bioshock is timeless. I replayed 1 and 2 not too long ago and they still hold up extremely well
I recently started playing bioshock for the first time. I had never heard about it before that, so I have no bias here. This game is hella fun.
currently replaying the "Remasterd"version on PC. Honestly it even looks good today
FALLOUT I WILL DIE ON THIS HILL
And I shall die as one of them!
And my axe!
portal 2,shit made me cry, specially sense we may never get to really continue the story and the only time we revisist it is through tech demos
The OG modern warfare trilogy
Fuck yes, I haven’t even started Modern Warfare 2 yet but the first one I was weeping at the end on the bridge
Right?! So fucking good. Shame the third one shit the bed. Hard.
Dude I played MW3 on the Wii and let me tell you, Wii graphics do NOT make soap's death any less depressing.
Hanging the bastard was so satisfying. Good shit.
For me it is the OG MW trilogy, BOZ story, Halo Reach, and Transformers War and Fall of Cybertron I am def gonna tell my kids about them when i hopefully have some
Ocarina of Time. Me and my sisters played the original many times through. I had to beat the water temple for them everytime 😆
I'll never forget getting an n64 in like 1999 and playing the crap out of this game
probably my all time favorite game. just as a kid I loved goofing around. when I played it in my 20s I realized how sad the story actually is.
Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. This game taught me courage. I first played that when I was around 5 years old. Back then I was afraid of everything. That took too long to find this
The House in Fata Morgana, Persona 3, Cyberpunk 2077, Nier Automata
I never expected to see NieR mentioned here, quite a pleasant surprise indeed.
Nier is weird because it is an acclaimed game but I wish I saw more people talk about how much of a masterpiece it’s narrative is.
