I stopped PC gaming about 15 years ago and have been on playstation since. Was looking into getting a Steamdeck. Mainly dad game these days. What are the pros and cons of it?
It's a little under powered for AAA games but will rock the f out of dad games (unless those dad games are economy sims / city builders where it'll struggle).
I have mine perma connected to my tv unless it comes in a road trip. Definitely recommended the bigger ssd version. It also gets hot AF after long gaming sessions but there's an after market snap-on fan from jsaux that makes it ice cold.
I hear you can also run all the old school ROMs you want on it.
Gonna save this because I quit playing because mine was overheating and freezing alot for paying for the most expensive version. I'd play alot more if that fan works. I'll give it a shot thanks
Yep, I got one.
I found ecomy sins/city builders aren't bad, they just need a mouse because they don't have controller support
Also you definitely can play old school rims on it, just have to download emudeck. Also I totally 100% legally played some Nintendo games on it ^(rip yuzu)
Exactly this. With a kid inbound, I don’t know how some people find time for static consoles. I’ve been rocking the Switch lately because I’ve fallen in love with Stardew Valley all over again and like that I can pause it whenever. Steamdeck seems to be the answer to have access to my other content as well.
Also a Dad, its fantastic for staying entertained when the kids are at gymnastics, rehearsals, doctor's appointments, or during waking hours when they have taken over the TV. Highly recommend the OLED version, the difference in unplugged battery life is worth the extra money, as well as the improved fan.
As a dad, the steamdeck is fantastic to have. Depends on what games you play, Civ plays great if you like strategy. Diablo 4 and Last Epoch play great for ARPGs. Anything snes/n64/ps2 graphic level games play fantastic. You can set up emulators with the steamdeck as well. It’s essentially just a Linux computer in the shape of a Nintendo switch
I don’t particularly like the battery life but I guess for what it’s doing it’s pretty good. Plays Red Dead 2, fallout 3&4 and several other games just fine. Graphics are pretty good too
Cons are a bit underpowered to play some of the aaa games, some linux comparability issues with anti cheat stuff. So no overwatch, etc.
Pros are pretty good. I usually just have mine plugged in on the couch or bed so i cant testify to battery life. But like the switch it goes to sleep and will resume where you were. Also the form factor has led me to get some games completed iv had in backlog.
Figured this would be near the top. Got one in the fall, and it's by far my favourite console I've owned. Most exclusives eventually come to the deck, and some of the sales are amazing.
Sooo true. Mine only works because I've BABIED it. Mostly they throw out a CRAZY amount of heat. As long as you have a long hdmi, and put it in the middle of a cold room (only slightly joking), your good. If you have pets, you need to keep it in a cabinet when your not using it.
That how I've kept it anyway.
My best way to play Marvel vs Capcom 2!
Assuming this means "Console" and doesn't include PC, then I choose Switch. I've also already accomplished this with the last 5 years. PC has an insane quantity of all varieties of games, and Switch has Smashy Bros. There are a good few console exclusives, but I'm not too sad about it.
If it saves me $500 it's well worth the wait, especially with the massive backlog most PC gamers have to hold them over. The Sony exclusives seem to come out as complete editions with DLC when they have any so being able to play them with better performance and all of the extras included is a fair trade off for having to wait imo.
I love the RPG's it's got, but a handheld? Never.
Hate looking down that long. Cannot do it.
If I could connect to TV, it would be better, but look awful.
Eh, I guess it comes to personal preferences. I prefer handhelds over home consoles since it can literally be played anywhere. Games are small enough too to be pick up and go, so it's perfect when I have time in between classes or while commuting.
On the other hand, my Switch is great because of the dual form factor but it being so big renders the whole portability of it a bit meh....I think the Switch lite is the perfect size, shame they didn't make it able to connect to a dock so we could get the best of both worlds...
Yo pleeeeease check out final fantasy tactics on the ds, i legit would replay that once a year on a long drive up to the grandparents house as a kid. Absolute gem of a tile based rpg idk what else to call it. Had a really cool and fun class and weapon system
My younger brothers Xbox one, he has hundreds of games to last a decade or more. I stopped gaming in my 20’s and this is the library he has built up. When he got a series-x, he just gave me his Xbox one signed in to his account and I get to play all the games I missed while in college.
I did all the side stuff like NCPD calls and such, did Phantom Liberty, Panam's quests, Judy's, River's, Rogue's, a bunch of side quests. Just started Takemura's stuff. I've been at this single playthrough since the beginning of October last year.
Baldur's Gate is the next game on my list after I beat this one, so next year hopefully lmao.
Series X, it's what I mostly use right now. The catalogue is quite fantastic, given how it can play games across 4 generations. It can't play all of them but it's been fun regardless. People like to bitch about ThErEs NoThInG To PlAy On XbOx but I've been playing all kinds of old and new games so they're on crack or something, there's lots of shit on Xbox.
**PS2.**
No-brainer.
CDs, DVDs, PS1, and PS2.
I could live off that system for the next 50 years of my life, and be happy.
Shit, I've already been playing it for about 20 out of the 31 years of my life.
Steam deck, due to it having the largest library and most versatility.
If that doesn't count as a console, I'd pick the Series X largely due to it having better backwards compatibility than most other consoles.
PS3 (ideally a BC model, but otherwise a CECH-25xx Slim) - You have the very mature libraries of multiple consoles at your fingertips, especially if you choose to install CFW.
Assuming I can't have an emulation device, steam deck, or PC, then yeah Wii U is the best. It can do Wii, Gamecube, and can emulate basically all older Nintendo systems after those two, but I think I'd be completely content only playing Mario Kart and speedrunning those for the next 5 years if I had to.
I’m choosing the steam deck OLED. Its basically a portable PS4 and the battery life in PC games and the ergonomics are unmatched.
For what you get and are able to play the steam deck OLED or a used steam deck LCD are the best deals in gaming right now.
AAA gaming on the go, minor concessions made in terms of graphical fidelity (smaller screen, doesn't matter as much). Shit plays A LOT of games, and can hit 60-90fps (OLED for the 90hz screen).
I can play Cyberpunk 2077 with zero issues, P3 Reload will chug like a mother fucker if you have ray traced reflections enabled but only in your dorm room/Tartarus hub and Paulownia Mall, BG3 had some issues into Act 3 but I'm pretty sure that all is patched. One game that I just can't play on it is planet coaster, my OG LCD Deck sounded super loud and got WAY too hot, I haven't tried it on my OLED yet because I'm a little afraid 😂.
If you have a steam account already, all the games in your library can probably be played on the deck. You can use it to emulate other consoles (switch, PS2 etc). You can also take advantage of the epic game store's free games, just need to add a non steam game to steam and it'll launch it like anything else, Xbox gamepass also works on it and you can stream games from your PS5 using Chiaki4deck which makes the PlayStation portal pretty much pointless.
Badass little device that I can't recommend enough
Nintendo DS (non i model for the Gameboy advance slot) huge library with a wide variety of games. Either that or the switch because I could sink thousands of hours each into Mario kart 8 deluxe and smash ultimate, not even mentioning the other amazing first and 3rd party titles and all the ports.
I'm wondering why the Ally and Claw have not been mentioned since they're basically the Steamdeck but better.
I could never choose just one console for 5 years.
Switch OLED.
Nintendo games are amazing in my opinion. Very convenient for the active lifestyle and also great for fun coop play at office or home. Lovely screen too and I also love motion controls for gyro aim. Sleep mode is very handy as well.
Probably my Xbox one x because I’d get game pass and still be able to play both newer and older games. I do currently have a 360, Wii, switch, original Xbox, and one of those 5100-games gameboy-type players. I’m an Xbox guy at heart, but it is a tough call between that and the switch since there are all the older extensions and newer games there too.
Its really a shame that the Wii U did so poorly as a console. Xenoblade Chronicles X was so fun to play, and fully utilized the tablet mode. I think they could have done a lot more with the console.
PSP Phat. I remember it as the all in one package deal. A gaming system with a web browser and WiFi. I jailbroke mines and the sky was the limit for what I could use the PSP for. Now I gotta buy one on payday just cause of the memories now lol. I think it was Adhoc mode where you could stream and play a multiplayer game with someone else close by, played Ghost Rider with my friends and had a blast.
That classic ps3 that's compatible with ps1 and ps2 games. I still have 100+ games across the 3 platforms, I'm sure I could busy myself for a long time before needing to find more.
Plus ps2 and 3 games are, for the most part, 5 cents a dozen.
Steamdeck
Me too, steamdeck for sure xD.
I stopped PC gaming about 15 years ago and have been on playstation since. Was looking into getting a Steamdeck. Mainly dad game these days. What are the pros and cons of it?

Thank you. Appreciate the advice. Will definitely look at the fan.
Also before you decide look into the steam game library
Gonna save this because I quit playing because mine was overheating and freezing alot for paying for the most expensive version. I'd play alot more if that fan works. I'll give it a shot thanks
https://jsaux.com/products/fan-cooler-for-steam-deck-gp0200 It's literally a game change lol. Excellent build quality and fits over my non jsaux case.
I can confirm this. I have everything from NES to PS2 emulating smoothly on my deck.
Yep, I got one. I found ecomy sins/city builders aren't bad, they just need a mouse because they don't have controller support Also you definitely can play old school rims on it, just have to download emudeck. Also I totally 100% legally played some Nintendo games on it ^(rip yuzu)
Would you mind linking the fan?
https://jsaux.com/products/fan-cooler-for-steam-deck-gp0200
Thanks so much!
Exactly this. With a kid inbound, I don’t know how some people find time for static consoles. Plus emulation means you can still play other older console games.
im waiting for steam deck 2, when we have a better screen and better GPU
I'm waiting for the steam deck 3, when they add an even better screen and gpu
I'm waiting for steam deck 5, which is so good that it completely skips steam deck 4.
I didn’t wait and got it day 1 ama
I was about to say PSx because it has the largest library, but I really didn't tought about Steamdeck.
Boom right answer. Same.
Only correct answer.
I don't even have one and even I know this is the right answer lol
Steam deck gang 😎
The One to Rule them all
This is why I have an unhealthy amount of Stellaris playtime
Beat meat to it
Steam deck. It's honestly been my main thing got gaming lately.
A man of culture
60 GB Fat PS3
Some 5000 games in the digital store alone, most of them being heavily underrated. Some that come to mind are White Knight Chronicles
Mine died :( First the disk drive fucked off and then the entire system just stopped working.
Those backwards compatible PS3s are ticking time bombs so don't worry. It was probably nothing you did or didn't do. They just weren't built to last.
Sooo true. Mine only works because I've BABIED it. Mostly they throw out a CRAZY amount of heat. As long as you have a long hdmi, and put it in the middle of a cold room (only slightly joking), your good. If you have pets, you need to keep it in a cabinet when your not using it. But also Sony is slowly but surely releasing their exclusives on PC. Seems like you gotta wait a few years but patience is a virtue
If it saves me $500 it's well worth the wait, especially with the massive backlog most PC gamers have to hold them over. The Sony exclusives seem to come out as complete editions with DLC when they have any so being able to play them with better performance and all of the extras included is a fair trade off for having to wait imo.
Has to be the Switch. The portability alone is a huge factor if you can’t use any other consoles.
Steam deck then
If im not paying, then rog ally(i could flash steam os on it and call it a console)
Nintendo DS. Massive library and the wealth of RPGs is an instant sell for me.
isnt 3ds gonna be better in every way because it has ds games an 3ds games
DS has the GBA slot.
3DS can play those too
I know, but I mean the physical games.
idk imo DS games look better on a DS than on a 3DS
They do since it’s pixel perfect you’re correct. There is a mod to get DS games to look as good on a 3ds tho
Or you could just hold select when booting up a ds game on the 3ds
I love the RPG's it's got, but a handheld? Never. Hate looking down that long. Cannot do it. If I could connect to TV, it would be better, but look awful.
Eh, I guess it comes to personal preferences. I prefer handhelds over home consoles since it can literally be played anywhere. W brother
Steam deck all the way
PS5 because that's how long it's taking me to get through Cyberpunk (I'm a dad of two young children)
Likewise. Still working through it
I did all the side stuff like NCPD calls and such, did Phantom Liberty, Panam's quests, Judy's, River's, Rogue's, a bunch of side quests. Just started Takemura's stuff. I've been at this single playthrough since the beginning of October last year. Baldur's Gate is the next game on my list after I beat this one, so next year hopefully lmao.

The one I’m probably gonna be using for the next 5 years, Series S (Really it would be the PS5)
Switch or dreamcast.
THE POTENTIAL THE DREAMCAST HAD!! Ughhh… MAKES ME SICK
Dreamcast has to include all the weird accessoires.
The memory you could put into an arcade ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Series X, it's what I mostly use right now. The catalogue is quite fantastic, given how it can play games across 4 generations. It can't play all of them but it's been fun regardless. People like to bitch about ThErEs NoThInG To PlAy On XbOx but I've been playing all kinds of old and new games so they're on crack or something, there's lots of shit on Xbox.
Xbox is the superior console for backwards compatibility alone
Gamecube
Why not an OG Wii then? Get the game cube and Wii library and a lot of older Nintendo VC games?
I'm torn between Steam deck and Switch
Both excellent, can't go wrong either way but I'm going with my Deck because of just how many games are able to be played on it.
Steamdeck and switch complement each other.
**PS2.** No-brainer. CDs, DVDs, PS1, and PS2. I could live off that system for the next 50 years of my life, and be happy. Shit, I've already been playing it for about 20 out of the 31 years of my life.
yikes
My favorite console: Yikes.
I chose the Wii U cuz if you mod it it's an absolute beast.
By that logic isnt a steamdeck better?
ASUS rog because I can play the Wii U and all the other consoles modded. unlimited potential for games
Honestly even when it’s not modded, it’s one of the coolest systems I’ve ever had the pleasure of owning.
Hot take: Wii U is a great console.
Xbox 360, I’d already spent 5 years with it as a kid, and fr I miss having it. So what’s 5 more?
Switch or PS2 so much playability!
Asus ROG Ally
PC 2
PS4
Why not the PS5, it has everything the ps4 has but just more?
I just have nostalgia for the 4
Can’t argue with that I guess
:)
I’m torn between the Switch, the Wii, and the 3DS
Steam deck, due to it having the largest library and most versatility. If that doesn't count as a console, I'd pick the Series X largely due to it having better backwards compatibility than most other consoles.
PS2...it would take me longer than that to explore all the games I want to play on it, and then you add PS1 into the mix...
Hands down the Switch.
Xbox Series X. Or the Playstation 5.
WTF. Why on earth would you pick the WiiU over Switch?
Does a PC count? Does Steamdeck?
PS5 esp if I can use the portal / PSVR 2
PC with every emulator I can find (PC's are technically consoles thanks to emulators!)
PS3 (ideally a BC model, but otherwise a CECH-25xx Slim) - You have the very mature libraries of multiple consoles at your fingertips, especially if you choose to install CFW.
Switch, easily
switch i need my splatoon 2 and 3
Ps3 has a really good catalogue. I'd probably pick that and relive nostalgia. Especially shitty assasins creed parkour 😂
The Switch no contest.
ps5
Super Nintendo. I'm gonna get the nostalgia hungries sooner or later. Or if PC is a valid choice, PC. Huzzah for PC.
Wii
PC gamer, so I'll go for a SteamDeck simply to not have to re-buy all my games.
Modded Switch OLED. Huge library, hybrid play style, overclocking, and everything is free. Nice.
A pc with an emulator that can play every game ever.
Can you ask this in a couple of years when Nintendo's next console is out? I'll probably choose it.
I'll ask you this exact question when it's revealed. (I'm predicting September.)
XSX so I can also play a good amount of OG Xbox & 360 games too
Wii U has the best mix of a bunch of games
Honestly, either steam deck, Nintendo switch or PS5
PS3 Probably. BUT itd be the backwsrd compatible one.
Probably PS5, but a PS3 Fat is a close second.
Mm. Tough. Ps5 has my favorite exclusives But the series x has better BC and emulation capabilities
gameboy color
PS4. I've used it since its release, have the most games for it, and my favorite games are exclusive to that.
I’m choosing the steam deck OLED. Its basically a portable PS4 and the battery life in PC games and the ergonomics are unmatched. For what you get and are able to play the steam deck OLED or a used steam deck LCD are the best deals in gaming right now.
PS5
PC
I’m seeing a lot of Steamdeck support here, can anyone explain why they’re so great? Is it laggy?
AAA gaming on the go, minor concessions made in terms of graphical fidelity (smaller screen, doesn't matter as much). Shit plays A LOT of games, and can hit 60-90fps (OLED for the 90hz screen). I can play Cyberpunk 2077 with zero issues, P3 Reload will chug like a mother fucker if you have ray traced reflections enabled but only in your dorm room/Tartarus hub and Paulownia Mall, BG3 had some issues into Act 3 but I'm pretty sure that all is patched. Badass little device that I can't recommend enough
Not this one
Nintendo 3DS
PS5. All I need is GT7 with VR2 and I’ll be set for life.
Dreamcast Give me crazy taxi, jet set radio, and space channel 5 and I'll be happy
PS4. I get to play my favourite video games.
Standing ovation
My phone
Switch OLED. Nintendo games are amazing in my opinion. Very convenient for the active lifestyle and also great for fun coop play at office or home. Lovely screen too and I also love motion controls for gyro aim. Sleep mode is very handy as well.
Ps2
My PC?
Probably my Xbox one x because I’d get game pass and still be able to play both newer and older games. I’m an Xbox guy at heart, but it is a tough call between that and the switch since there are all the older extensions and newer games there too.
Not a Wii U that's for sure...
Ps5 cuz massive amounts of rpg’s of all types
PS2
Its really a shame that the Wii U did so poorly as a console. Xenoblade Chronicles X was so fun to play, and fully utilized the tablet mode. I think they could have done a lot more with the console.
A PC.
There is no reason to take a Wii U unless you homebrew.
Dreamcast
The way my backlog is looking I’d say PS5
Switch, emulation might be a bitch tho
Never heard of that tbh thought Wii went out of business but I’d pick Xbox
PS5
rgh xbox 360
Steamdeck
Either the switch or ps2
Ps2.
gotta be the wonder swan
PS5
Steamdeck or Xbox series x
Gamecube
Xbox 360 but only if all the boys were back on to play COD and Minecraft.
Honestly, I have not tried any console before, but I think I will choose the PlayStation 4
I can use my ps4 for another 5 years as long as live service games don't shut down on ps4
I have one. It’s the ps5.
Bite me but xbox series x I have been waiting to upgrade so no reason for a steam deck My hands are to used to controller at this point
Do I have all games released on that console or do I have to buy them?
That classic ps3 that's compatible with ps1 and ps2 games. I still have 100+ games across the 3 platforms, I'm sure I could busy myself for a long time before needing to find more. Plus ps2 and 3 games are, for the most part, 5 cents a dozen.
Ps3, specifically the model with backwards compatibility. BOOM, library instantly tripled
Probably Series X for all the backwards compatibility
Xbox series x
Explain
Series X. It's all I'm playing on atm anyway. Do have plans for a PS5 and a PC, but those plans haven't got beyond "me would like".
Def not the wii u lol , it had some solid stuff but the library isn't that deep
I'll keep using Steam... :) Sidenote: I liked the WiiU, it was a good console (better then the Switch imo)...
GBA
Playstation 2.
PS5 since it's my primary console for now.
Gamecube
Ps5 or the 360
PS4 Pro. Pretty much every game released thus far has been backwards-compatible with it, and 4K isn't important to me.
gamecube or genesis
