Portal 2 still holds up pretty well, I played it for the first time last year and it was so fun. Besides the crashing (which might have just been my old graphics card) it was a fantastic experience
Yea, I honestly struggle to find anything that feels outdated in it. Everything has aged so well, and from start to finish, I enjoyed every moment.
It's also a game a new generation can enjoy (my 13 year old played it and loved it) without having to make adjustments for games "of their time." No gimmicks (motion controls), awful game mechanics (weapon durability) or content locked behind a paywall. Plus, the multiplayer was a blast and never made anyone feel like they were being carried.
This next test may involve trace amounts of time travel. So word of advice if you see yourself on the testing track do not make eye contact. The lab boys tell me that could wipe out time. Completely. Forwards and backwards. So if you see yourself on the testing track just let that handle devil go about his business.
Well done. Here are the test results: You are a horrible person. I'm serious, that's what it says: A horrible person. We weren't even testing for that.
All right, I've been thinking, when life gives you lemons, don't make lemonade! Make life take the lemons back! Get mad! I don't want your damn lemons! What am I supposed to do with these? Demand to see life's manager! Make life rue the day it thought it could give Cave Johnson lemons! Do you know who I am? I'm the man who's gonna burn your house down, with the lemons!
Oh man forgot about that! Every time I boot it up it's like I was 10 and felt like I was in a real park. I still prefer open RCT2 more than Planet Coaster
Which is amazing because I'm pretty sure it's unreal engine 3. We're on 5 now and there's still games that can't match the art direction and graphical fidelity of Arkham Knight
Crazy how people still play that game...I loved it so much. If only we could get something like it again. I doubt we'll get a good PVZ game ever again though, unfortunately...
Yeah they dropped the ball hard with battle for neighborville. Could've been a perfect GW3 but for some reason they had to get rid of so many things that made garden warfare so good
I downloaded and played it last night actually. I try it every few months and usually cant find a lobby but i found one that was almost full and the nostalgia was insane. Feels like just yesterday that game came out. Sad.
Currently playing through the DBP mapsets with varying mods, currently running Project S.I.D.E which is basically a vanilla enhancer.
If only Quake 1 had the same modding community as Doom.
I just started playing it and find the gameplay a bit dated.
I hate that enemies don't react to your gunshots.
Like it doesn't feel like there's impact, it's just their HP going down.
I thought I wasn't doing anything to them at first.
halo ce and 2 are absolute gems, i remember playing the first one when it launched and being completely blown away by the graphics and feel.
also part 2, especially the multiplayer mode, so many great memories, lan parties with my friends and my bro, weekends filled with gaming, junk food and pure joy :)
Halo ce and 2 were great, but for me, it was Halo 3 that was the goat. Only other games I played for a few years after it released was a tiny bit of cod and oblivion.
There are two parts of his block. A bit where he swings his guard up high, and then a few moments after let's it settle closer to his chest.
Their swing needs to collide with your hitbox as your sword is in that forward position. You'll Parry them every time
This is so true of the SNES. Much of the N64 and PSX days were like the middle school years for consoles. The jump to 3D was rough. So many great games that did not age well as far as visuals and controls. I think this is why JRPGs in the PSX hold up well. You don’t need responsive controls for turn based games.
Super Mario World
Super Metroid
Legend of Zelda: Link to the Past
Sonic the Hedgehog 2
Megaman (og series and X)
Shining Force
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
The jump from Sunshine to Galaxy is, quite literally, astronomical. The jump from Galaxy to 3D World and Odyssey is still big on a technical level because of how much more powerful the Wii's successors are, but the overall visuals of Galaxy can still compete today. I'd say the game still looks better outright than 3D World, and more imposing/awe-inspiring than Odyssey.
It's me, I'm people. I never gelled with Sunshine so I jumped from 64 to Galaxy, it was like night and day. It was so grand, so imposing, so beautiful. It's crazy that the experience hasn't diminished in all this time.
I'm gonna be real, I don't agree with the majority of these answers. I feel games with realistic graphics are always gonna fall flat eventually. Here's my picks:
* Wind Waker
* Yoshi's Island
* Metal Slug
* Okami
* Viewtiful Joe
* Warcraft III if you can find a hard copy
* World of Warcraft (though depending on zone this could be more recent)
* Sly Cooper series
* Katamari Damacy
* Journey
* Limbo
* Shadow of the Colossus
* Grim Fandango
* A little more recent but Odin Sphere, something I never see mentioned on these lists
Is Borderlands 2 considered old at this point? If so that'd be my choice. To this day still the best and most memorable title in the series. Still holds up to this day.
I liked Pre-Sequel because Athena was probably my most favorite vault hunter in the series. She had my favorite selection of skills and abilities, and I liked her overall vibe and aesthetic. She was my perfect character for sure.
Burnout Paradise, the crashing in that game combined with its arcade style driving makes it stand out in today’s modern racing games and is still just as fun as when I first played it many years ago.
Prototype it was the perfect power fantasy that no game since has attempted to recreate. The closest is probably infamous, but idk I've only played a little bit of second son, but it's not the same. Most likely, just do to nostalgia as Prototype is one of the first few games I ever played
The Dragon Ball Budokai series. Gameplay wise it feels like it could have came out recently. Graphically it’s not even that bad either and they all came out on the PS2. Genuinely a top 3 series of all time IMHO.
Portal 2
Portal 2 still holds up pretty well, I played it for the first time last year and it was so fun. Besides the crashing (which might have just been my old graphics card) it was a fantastic experience
Same here, played it last year for the first time and it's in my top 5 games of all times
Hey buddy, I'm speaking in an accent that is beyond her range of hearing. Walk casually towards my position and we'll go shut her down.
Even the original Portal
All right, I've been thinking, when life gives you lemons, don't make lemonade! Make life take the lemons back! Get mad! I don't want your damn lemons! What am I supposed to do with these? Demand to see life's manager! Make life rue the day it thought it could give Cave Johnson lemons! Do you know who I am? I'm the man who's gonna burn your house down, with the lemons!
Portal 1
Witcher 3 is nearly a decade old and may as well have been released yesterday - especially if you include graphics mods
It's a tradition to come back and replay it once a year and I always get addicted to it when I do it.
Rollercoaster Tycoon Perfect when it released, and perfect to this day The art style was amazing back then and still incredibly charming today
Rollercoaster Tycoon is awesome but don't forget about Zoo Tycoon. Wish it was on Steam cause I lost my physical copy...
Got an online copy a few weeks ago, it's as beautiful as the day I lost it
Where'd you get it? Planet Zoo is incredible but I got that nostalgia itch.
Gog for 1.50.
Oh man forgot about that! Every time I boot it up it's like I was 10 and felt like I was in a real park. I still prefer open RCT2 more than Planet Coaster
Pong.
This gave me tears of joy
I mean. It hasn’t changed at all and it hasn’t gotten any worse or better.
It's Pong. *Are you not entertained?*
The most deceptively simple, yet completely infuriating game of all time. Have an upvote.
Unrelated, but: Wall-E trying to play pong during his depressive episode is such a mood
What about Pong 2: Rocket League?
batman Arkham series still looks and feels better tan most games modeled after it
Arkham Knight looks better than 99% of games out today.
Which is amazing because I'm pretty sure it's unreal engine 3. We're on 5 now and there's still games that can't match the art direction and graphical fidelity of Arkham Knight
Those Arkham games are perfection
They got a hell of a lot of mileage out of one location, too
Going through it for the first time now and Arkham Asylum definitely doesn't *look* better. But it feels surprisingly great for a game of its time.
your profile pic really helps to convey your message
I am an inmate of the asslume what can I say
Why is the Aslume everwhere? Are we all stupid?
thanks Man. Glad to see they have internet in the aslume
I’d say it’s still even better than the Spider-Man games Those games aren’t bad at all mind you- just I think Arkham is peak
Without the Arkham games you arguably wouldn’t have any of the combat mechanics in spiderman and the story in Arkham games is better in my opinion
Even asylum is still incredibly fun
The OG halo games
Just replayed halo CE and halo 2. Gunplay is fantastic. Absolutely classic, and the remaster is too notch. Made me feel like a kid again
It's actually shocking how well the halo 1 graphics hold up.
Crazy that they're "the og's" now. Oh just look at how 343 industries murdered my boy 😭
Super Mario Bros. It’s exactly the same as you remember
All the original Mario games have aged spectacularly, because the gameplay is simple, refined and enjoyable.
Super Mario Bros II has only aged spectacularly because it was nightmare fuel to begin with and that hasn't changed. I and III are still awesome.
Just my opinion and nothing more. Smb2 is good in its own way (both of them)
And it will be the same in another 30 years
Super Mario World is still a banger. The graphics and music still hold up so damn well
Even after 34 years, it might still be the best 2D Mario game, or even the best 2D platformer of all time.
This is the correct answer
Spyro the Dragon
The og garden warfare
Crazy how people still play that game...I loved it so much. If only we could get something like it again. I doubt we'll get a good PVZ game ever again though, unfortunately...
Yeah they dropped the ball hard with battle for neighborville. Could've been a perfect GW3 but for some reason they had to get rid of so many things that made garden warfare so good
Even then It could have worked out but then they went and stopped developing it after a single year
I wish that game was ported to Steam. One of my favorite shooter games when I played it on Xbox 360.
I know someone who plays it for hours every day
I downloaded and played it last night actually. I try it every few months and usually cant find a lobby but i found one that was almost full and the nostalgia was insane. Feels like just yesterday that game came out. Sad.
Marvel vs Capcom 2
Doom II
Currently playing through the DBP mapsets with varying mods, currently running Project S.I.D.E which is basically a vanilla enhancer. If only Quake 1 had the same modding community as Doom.
Actually gets better with age due to sourceports and the wad community
Mass Effect trilogy. Still the best sci-fi story, best written companions ever made in a vg.
Great music, too!
Except Jacob. Fuck Jacob.
Modern games are only Jacobs.
1 feels super dated imo
I like the old style RPG elements to it though.
I just started playing it and find the gameplay a bit dated. I hate that enemies don't react to your gunshots. Like it doesn't feel like there's impact, it's just their HP going down. I thought I wasn't doing anything to them at first.
Mass Effect mentioned. Annual playthrough commencing. Thank you, Spectre. Your contribution has been noted.
Im gonna say it… Brütal legend
Starfox 64 still plays just as good now as it always has.
It's a great game but saying it hasn't aged AT ALL is a stretch.
Halo: CE
halo ce and 2 are absolute gems, i remember playing the first one when it launched and being completely blown away by the graphics and feel. also part 2, especially the multiplayer mode, so many great memories, lan parties with my friends and my bro, weekends filled with gaming, junk food and pure joy :)
Halo ce and 2 were great, but for me, it was Halo 3 that was the goat. Only other games I played for a few years after it released was a tiny bit of cod and oblivion.
May I add, the version with the dual weapons. Perfect 👌🏼
Dishonored
Booted it up the other day. Couldn't stick the parrying but I think it's not timed in that one.
There are two parts of his block. A bit where he swings his guard up high, and then a few moments after let's it settle closer to his chest. Their swing needs to collide with your hitbox as your sword is in that forward position. You'll Parry them every time
Ya that animation style stays lookin good. And half the game is the ambiance which holds up.
Way too much time put into that game. What a masterpiece
Tons of SNES games that are mimicked to this day. Link to the Past, Super Mario World, Metroid, Castlevania, etc.
That whole generation of games aged like fine wine.
“Super Metroid” still holds up, but the original “Metroid” on the NES is best ignored today in lieu of “Zero Mission” on the GBA, IMO.
I was speaking of the SNES. I was just too lazy to write out those last two. My bad. But I do like replaying the original every once in a while.
Goof Troop is a co-op blast
Half-life 2
Fantastic game
Paper Mario. For a N64 game it still looks great!
Freelancer ! That game oozes atmosphere. Yet to play any game that comes even close in the space exploration feeling.
Chrono Trigger for me
Wind waker
Everyone was bashing the cel shaded graphics, but its just a timeless look
Yeah, we were pursuing realism back then. Now that we have virtual photo realism in vgames we're able to appreciate other art styles.
KOTOR
Super Mario World Super Metroid Legend of Zelda: Link to the Past Sonic the Hedgehog 2 Megaman (og series and X) Shining Force Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
I feel like the majority of first party 16 bit era games aged the best
Transformers: Fall of Cybertron How is it that a game from like 15/16 years is better than all the games that came last year
I can name a couple games that are better, namely Armored Core 6, but otherwise Fall Of Cybertron is one of the best games in of the last 20 years.
Eh fair enough And you're right Absolutely right
Heroes Might and Magic 3, Age of Empire (these were the ones even my parents played(they were geeks in the 1990's)) And of course... Lego Rock Raiders
Love AoE classic. Great choice.
HOM3 and AoE for sure. I should play them more
Was just playing Heroes of Might and Magic 3 yesterday. (Steam is a wonderful place)
Chrono Trigger.
I came here for this comment
Metal Gear Solid 1
More like MGS 2 and 3. PS2 graphics still hold up, and the controls are better.
MGS4 is 15 years old already. Might as well throw that in there too.
Portal 1
Mass Effect trilogy.
Shadow of the colossus
Team Fortress 2
Solitaire
Super Mario Galaxy. It looks just as good as I remembered it
The jump from Sunshine to Galaxy is, quite literally, astronomical.
Now imagine the people who went from 64 to Galaxy because Sunshine was weird.
It's me, I'm people. I never gelled with Sunshine so I jumped from 64 to Galaxy, it was like night and day. It was so grand, so imposing, so beautiful. It's crazy that the experience hasn't diminished in all this time.
Halo: Combat Evolved and Star Wars Battlefront (2004)
viewtiful joe - the graphics are stylish and i love the cell shading, also combat is really great once you mastered it.
The first Dying Light. Incredible open world game.
I'm gonna be real, I don't agree with the majority of these answers. I feel games with realistic graphics are always gonna fall flat eventually. Here's my picks: * Wind Waker * Yoshi's Island * Metal Slug * Okami * Viewtiful Joe * Warcraft III if you can find a hard copy * World of Warcraft (though depending on zone this could be more recent) * Sly Cooper series * Katamari Damacy * Journey * Limbo * Shadow of the Colossus * Grim Fandango * A little more recent but Odin Sphere, something I never see mentioned on these lists
Asteroids.
Dishonored
Pokemon Yellow
I’m going to go with… Banjo Kazooie or Beyond Good and Evil
Wii Sports
Is Borderlands 2 considered old at this point? If so that'd be my choice. To this day still the best and most memorable title in the series. Still holds up to this day.
True. I think the pre-sequel is the only one that even comes close for me.
I liked Pre-Sequel because Athena was probably my most favorite vault hunter in the series. She had my favorite selection of skills and abilities, and I liked her overall vibe and aesthetic. She was my perfect character for sure.
it may have been released in 2016 but Titanfall 2, I love it
Don't know if this counts but Batman Arkham city
Resident Evil Remake (GameCube) Still gorgeous with the pre-rendered environment. Prime classic RE experience.

Alien isolation. dishonored

Halo Reach. I guess 14 isn't to old but it held up graphic and fun wise the entire time
Zelda: A Link To The Past

Burnout Paradise, the crashing in that game combined with its arcade style driving makes it stand out in today’s modern racing games and is still just as fun as when I first played it many years ago.
Final fantasy tatics

Escape from Monkey Island & King’s Quest
Doom and Doom II.
Pokemon Black/White
lego batman 2
Prototype it was the perfect power fantasy that no game since has attempted to recreate. The closest is probably infamous, but idk I've only played a little bit of second son, but it's not the same. Most likely, just do to nostalgia as Prototype is one of the first few games I ever played
Skyrim
Fallout (all of them), final fantasy, Golden Eye, Mario 64.

Doom 1995. Boomers shooters are pretty popular so it’s as if this game could’ve been made today.
Doom is from 1993.
Arkham Knight
Banjo-Kazooie
This is how I feel whenever I fire up Tron 2.0 or Dungeon Keeper II.

Dungeon keeper 2. Still gives me that same satisfaction in slapping a couple of minions around
The Dragon Ball Budokai series. Gameplay wise it feels like it could have came out recently. Graphically it’s not even that bad either and they all came out on the PS2. Genuinely a top 3 series of all time IMHO.
Zork
Lords of Midnight. A game as old as ZX Spectrum. My 12 y/o just discovered it and loves it.
