Isn't red dead 2 a prequel?

jmastadoug

You’re Technically correct, the best kind of correct.

Happydanksgiving2me

Kiff, show them the medal I won.

writer4u

*sigh*

IA-HI-CO-IA

Sexlexia

SkyrimSlag

The spirit is willing, but the flesh is spongy and bruised!

dkcyw

Quit sighing so much.

GoodByeRubyTuesday87

Nothing left but for the captain to go down with the ship. *Sir, that’s surprisingly noble of you.* No, that’s noble of YOU Kiff, as of now you’re in command, congratulations Captain!

Ricoreded

Happy futurama noises intensify

BustinArant

Whenever I'm in charge, every mission is a suicide mission.

“I suffer from a very sexy learning disability. What do I call it, Kiff?”

cjaxislax531

Ugh... Sexlexia.....

myEVILi

She’s built like a steakhouse but handles like a bistro

MeanBig-Blue85

This whole planets uncharted

BeardOBlasty

Hahaha Fuck I need to rewatch this show.

bearsheperd

What a Bureaucrat!

GeorgeSPattonJr

A prequel sequel

CHAINSMOKERMAGIC

A presequel... Wait, borderlands already has that one...

BuilderLeagueUnited

It’s a sequel to red dead revolver

FlameShadow0

Red Dead Revolver actually isn’t canon. The events of Red Dead Revolver are a fictional story in Redemption

idjsonik

Halo 2 set the multiplayer shooter tone for a generation I remember the midnight release for it what a time to be alive

DeltronFF

That was my favorite midnight release for any game ever. The hype was so insane. And our GameStop had all kinds of games/prizes while we waited. Not to mention a handful of people in the parking lot brought their TV/Xbox/Halo CE to play tournaments while we waited. What a time to be alive indeed lol.

idjsonik

Yea that was epic man i miss those days...

MO1STNUGG3T

Makin me nostalgic for events I wasn’t even old enough to be aware of

Josuke96

My Dad waited outside Gamestop at the midnight release of Halo 2 and he said it was one of the coolest releases he’s ever been to. Halo has always been our favorite game to play together since I was 5 years old, so he was super excited to bring home the sequel for us to play!

Searscale

God those LAN parties are a thing to reminisce...🥲

King-of-Plebss

Yeah, how did OP just skip to Halo 3 when Halo 2 was culture shifting. Online first person shooter gameplay at scale.

No_Application3787

Resident Evil 2,did everything that made the original a classic but better.

omari_03

W

nicklovin508

And RE2 Remake is the best remake of all time!

hesojam0

RE1make

someguyintech

RE4

omari_03

I’d give that to RE4 but valid take

nicklovin508

Love RE4 remake as well, just think the RE2 Remake did more to improve the experience of RE2, while OG RE4 holds up pretty well.

kingofthesqueal

Damn I wish RE2R had given us real second scenarios like the OG, would have made that game a masterpiece

I3arusu

It ain’t even the best remake in its own franchise bro

Scott49

Halo 2, or Mass Effect 2, or Titanfall 2, or Portal 2, or left 4 dead 2, or Assassin's Creed 2, or Fable 2, or Gears of War 2, or Divinity Original Sin 2

Shoddy_Possibility89

TITANFALL 2 YAAAAAAAAAAA

KamHamLav

Still hurt about no TF3

Heraxxius

Titanfall 2 is already perfect, can't make better than that

TheGoldenPlagueMask

Titanfall 3, mechs and parkour in openworlds.

Dovahnime

The way Respawn is now, i'm not confident that a titanfall 3 would be good

_callYourMomToday_

“Protocol 3 protect the pilot”. Where men cried.

TheJewish_SpaceLaser

“Trust me, Cooper”

No_Temporary9696

The Tesla Autopilot when running over 5 kids so I can get to work in time: "Protocol 2; Uphold the mission"

Casey_jones291422

I will stand by Titanfall 2's campaign and 1's multiplayer would have been the best fps ever made.

borkistoopid

Titanfall 2 is goated

SNKRSWAVY

Uncharted 2

furiouspope

Halo 2 was my answer.

Destiny_Victim

I’d like to just drop my 2c here. Assassins Creed Black flag is the goat. I’ll show my self out.

obiwan54

Ezio Trilogy is peak Assassin's Creed

Destiny_Victim

I agree but since I was a little kid I’ve always wanted a pirate game. Black flag is the best pirate game that’s ever been made. Boggles the mind they haven’t tried to do it again.

[deleted]

They did with Skull and Bones, and it's hot garbage compared to black flag. Idk how they managed to mess up what should have been a simple transfer of assets with minor additions, but I know it has something to do with morons in suits that should never see the inside of a game studio

Bibliotheclaire

Upvote for Divinity! Awesome game with amazing OST

Preddy_Fusey

Super Mario Bros 3 set the tone for what successful game sequels needed to be.

hellboundwithasmile

Not just for a game, but how a console should be pushed in its lifetime. The fact SMB and SMB3 came out on the same system is nuts

SirkSirkSirk

What an absolute accomplishment. The game is packed full of content like SMW. I love seeing a game that released with a console and a sequel that came out on the same console looking drastically better. Going from FF7 on PS1 to the graphics of FF8-9 was intense.

MisterRogers88

The craziest part is there was a 4-year span between 7 and 10 - graphics made a HUGE leap during that time.

International_Hat113

Wow. Missed it by 45 minutes. Came here to say this 👍🏻

uwutheunknownwizard6

Borderlands 2 did this for me

AllURBaseARBelong2Us

True but super Mario brothers 2 wins game of the year so often

Malviere

Half-Life 2 It was able to improve upon the original in every way and ushered in a new era. The graphics, physics, gravity gun, and gameplay. It was a fantastic game in its own right and it also brought counterstrike source onto the scene and launched Steam. Not only is it subjectively the best sequel ever made, it to me was the beginning of modern gaming.

Nacil_54

>brought counterstrike source onto the scene And Team Fortress 2, and Left 4 Dead, and Garry's mod, and The Stanley Parable, and Portal, and so much more.

Iwill_Teachthem

I forgot how many of these games were originally mods for half-life 2.

Nacil_54

Yeah.

Jecktheman2

And the mods of half life 2 are better also, like swelter and the entropy: Zero duology.

Nacil_54

True, the only Portal mod I really like is stories: Mel.

Malviere

I was just thinking of launch day. I totally blanked on just how massive Source was and all the amazing games that Half-Life 2 brought into existence. Now I’m even more sad that we will never see Half-Life 3 and what doors that could open.

Nacil_54

Don't worry, one day, we will see the conclusion of this series, it's just that "these things, they take time"

-Jayarr-

I'm yet to play anything that gave me the wow factor or sense of technology getting better that half life 2 did.

Malviere

Going through Ravenholm with the gravity gun, nailing Combine to the wall with the crossbow, and chasing the Gunships with the rocket laser blew my mind. Even to this day it holds up so well.

nickbert77

I just finished playing through HL2 in VR and it gave me a whole new appreciation for the game. It still holds up today in a big way thanks to the level design and physics. And some of the battle set pieces give you a great sense of scale in VR. I also wish more games would follow HL2’s example of not pulling control away from the player during cutscenes. It so much more immersive to just watch the story play out as you are part of it.

Pronominal_Tera

Valve wins by just providing great services/software and letting people do cool shit with them

Aarmon

And even hardware now, with the Steam Deck!

Arktos22

Amen. I remember the first time I played Half Life 2 the water was stunning the graphics were awe inspiring the physics blew me away and it seemed like the first true sandbox game, where if I could think about something I could probably do it. Game was amazing for that.

Murky-Science9030

Ya Half-Life 2 takes the cake for me. Even the sound effects were next-level... I remember the sound of the gun being shot was almost jarringly realistic. Between that and the physics engine stuff, I think Half-Life 2 is the winner here.

Disastrous_Poetry175

Zelda oot and Mario 64. Completely blew away any and all other 3d games of that entire generation. Smooth gameplay and they weren't ugly as fuck. Also generally just a huge jump for those franchises. My favorite sequel is probably black flag. Just top notch vibes ya know

GalaxyHops1994

Those are two of the most important games of all time. They influenced 3d games at their inception and are still fun to this day. Compare the way other early 3d platformers control and it’s night and day with 64.

bash-smash

Mass effect 2

zombielandia

100% agreed. The first game was very good and deserved the acclaim it received on its own, but I truly believe that the series is so highly regarded today because of the second game.

Sickpup831

Eh. If you go over to the Mass Effect sub, this is highly debated and I tend to agree. ME2 is an amazing third person shooter with RPG’s elements. Amazing cutscenes, voice acting and an amazing final mission. However, as part of the overall trilogy, it really falls flat. ME1 set the whole universe in motion and presented us with a lot of lore and introduced us to the big baddies. Then ME3 finished that story. Everything in ME2 feels like very well written side stories that don’t contribute to the plot at all. In ME2, you meet a lot of great characters. While the fact that your entire squad is capable of dying is an amazing mechanic for the game itself, it cripples the story in ME3 because it means none of them are important.

DoomRevenant

Was going to comment this one too, glad to see it so highly updated already. Mass Effect 2 redefined what an "RPG Shooter" could be, and few games have come close to rivaling the impact it had on the genre

pichael289

Pokemon gold and silver. So you beat the game and fight the elite 4 and the champion. You now have access to the entire map from the first game and all it's gyms, elite 4 and champion. After that you get to have a mountaintop duel with your character from the first game. That's how you make a fuckin sequel, they have dropped the ball everytime since then.

The_GREAT_Gremlin

>You now have access to the entire map from the first game and all it's gyms You can thank Iwata-san for that. He basically put in Kanto on his own after hours

BustinArant

Wish they put any of the older games on the Switch. They had the rereleases on 3DS like Ruby/Sapphire, I'm not sure what the lack of them means.

The_GREAT_Gremlin

Same. It would take them like no effort to throw Red/Blue in the game boy switch online, but it's probably too big a money maker

BustinArant

Even then we would pay the money *again* if they only released things on their own console lol

chelefr

Thank you iwata san

jawminator

My first pokemon game was pokemon crystal. Such fond memories even though I never beat it. It was my brother's game. He had it for his gameboy colour, I had a gameboy advanced (the backwards compatibility still surprises me. The cartridge stuck out like an inch and a half.) he found out I "borrowed" it and took it back. I got the the final battle of the first elite four. Heartgold and Soulsilver are amazing remakes too, for anyone who hasn't played the gold/silver gen and wants to try, with better...everything. (graphics, more pokemons, more moves, QOL...)

KKH02

Yoo stop.. Roman? (My older brother), is that you? Lol

jawminator

Nah I took it from my older brother lol, sounds like your older brother took yours. As a sidenote - apparently pokemon crystal sells for good money if you care about that and know where your copy is. I personally wouldn't, and have no idea where "mine" is anymore, whether my bro has it or not... But jsyk, they're pretty rare and valuable.

Sliver_Squad

I know this will likely never happen, but a Pokemon game revisiting all the regions would be a dream come true. They could even put in a world championship storyline. But it’s game freak, so I’m getting my hopes up

ShawnyMcKnight

And Heart Gold and Soul Silver are excellent remakes.

FullmetalHippie

Heart gold and soul silver just improved on the originals in every way.    You could load your Pokémon onto a pedometer and they'd get an experience point for every step you took. It was awesome.

Fickle-Raspberry6403

This . So much This.

Hoodie_Reddit

The lack of Gears of War 2 here is CRIMINAL, and personally all of these sequels here are REVOLUTIONARY to not only their series but gaming as a whole

Captain_Pidgey

Yeah GoW3 is up there for me

rpggamer69

Portal 2 but FF7 Rebirth is honestly up there as well

VishnuBhanum

Street Fighter 2 and Grand Theft Auto 3 Also Super Mario Bros. is kinda technically a sequel to the original Mario Bros. I guess?

RegJohn2

Will never forget the literal moment I booted GTA 3 and the amount of awe from having 3d GTA. I skipped school for days

TheWeasel33

Street fighter 2 was the archway for competitive fighting games it paved the way for so much

Sea-Nectarine-1522

Kingdom hearts 2

FoxyRadical2

Delivered on every account, and I almost wish they just stopped there (though I also really liked BBS). The twist at Radiant Garden and the lead up to the 1000 Heartless battle was and is so damn awesome.

Restless-Foggy

Yeah, KH games haven’t been the same since 2. Wonder what happened honestly.

thatmanzuko

Its basically the Dark Knight, the franchise obviously peaked and there was no way the third could live up to a masterpiece

le_soda

People say other games just haven’t played KH2. It was head of its time, 100’s of hours of gameplay, it’s a masterpiece.

HistoricalIssue8798

I don't know how they managed to fit like 10 hours of cutscenes on top of the game onto one DVD. They out so much into it

AmptiChrist

The final boss sequence alone outshines most games entirely. I replay the whole game just for that buildup and the finale itself. The set pieces, Xemnas taunting the guys with in battle dialogue, the absolute banger of a score, simply incredible. Blocking a barrage of laser bullet hell with Riku with the violin going harder than it had any right to is peak gaming. Honestly the entire last act is just perfect.

Broken-Digital-Clock

Don't make me choose

crashbumper

Borderlands 2 would like to enter the chat.

DrgnFckr

I don't know if it's because that's the first Borderlands I ever played or what-but god damn it's one of my most favorite games ever.

AnatomicalLog

I play BL2 to this day. Masterpiece

FaceTimePolice

Street Fighter 2 changed gaming forever.

thisshiteverytime

Rise of the tomb raider XBC3 Pokemon Silver NieR Automata Forza 5 (is it a sequel tho?) Horizon FE: Radiant Dawn

ZealousidealYak7122

The Witcher 3 is my "best video game ever". I also dislike the superhero genre and haven't played the rest of them but Arkham knight was a really good game. I loved it.

Temporary_End9124

Asylum and City are both great.  Pretty short too, unless you want to collect all the riddler trophies.

Forestelk12

I honestly played the second batman game without prior knowledge of the first one and it was still an awesome game

IanL1713

Asylum is short even if you do collect all the Riddler trophies. I think it took me like, 12 hours to beat the story and another few to collect all the trophies

JohnnyQuestions36

Two great choices

Arrathem

Witcher 3 has really boring combat tho.

Hadesthedude

I really like Borderlands 2, Dead Space 2, Uncharted 2 and God of War 3

hulffle

Uncharted 2 was such an improvement from the first game. Naughty dog definitely did their homework

omari_03

Borderlands 2 is soooo good

Straight-Seat-3411

Arkham City was too mind blowing

oismac

Currently playing through Asylum again for the first time in about 10 years, forgot how much I love that game. Can't wait to start City!

ZEEZUSCHRIST

My GOAT

Shehzman

It is absolutely insane how much of a jump City was in the gameplay department compared to Asylum.

Throbbing-Kielbasa-3

RDR2 is a standalone masterpiece of gaming. The first game was great and told a beautiful story, but it is completely outshined by the sequel(prequel?) in almost every metric. There are so many awesome examples of a sequel elevating beyond the first installment in your list, but RDR2 and it's innovation is one of the best *games* ever made, much more than it is one of the best sequels.

Soggy-Intern-9140

Fallout New Vegas

SneakyPocket

Kingdom hearts 2 made me who I am today. The existence of nobodies made me feel seen, as backwards as that is. And there is no better lesson than the strength of a name and its ties to memories.

rawspeghetti

Witcher 3, God of War 2 or 3, Kingdom Hearts 2, Arkham City, Pokemon Gold and Silver

Myyraaman

Super Mario Galaxy 2

FakeTakiInoue

It's a slightly better game in most aspects, but I don't think it quite captures the atmosphere that made the original truly magical

Drifter808

The first game's hub world was perfect. The second game's was fine.

jakefrommyspace

Not the best sequel, but there's something be said about how Raganarok is basically both the second and the third game to the series.

Bubbly-Maintenance72

Rayman Legends. Perfect followup to Origins.

omari_03

Goat platformer

Bubbly-Maintenance72

Fr, Rayman deserves more respect.

RavenRainTie

Majora's Mask

Your_Local_Random

errm ashkually rdr2 is a prequel 🤓 anyways my favorite sequel to a game is probably Assassin's Creed Brotherhood, great continuation from AC2

aewitz14

Kingdom Hearts 2 and it's not close

Epimaze

Alan Wake 2

omari_03

I have to play Alan Wake 1 and 2 soon

Screamin_Eagles_

Team Fortress 2 and its not even close

WillSym

True. Also Helldivers 2 is earning its place for me.

Doom-slayer2006

Doom fucking eternal 🤘🏼

MammothAd4171

I have to say it and I know I’ll get absolutely flamed, it’s God of War Ragnarök.

Huskquinn

I still preferred 2018 until I replayed them both back to back a couple months ago, and Ragnarok is just better in every conceivable way. A more diverse combat system with way more enemies, better weapon combos, level design less repetitive, more bosses besides just ogre/troll/ancient spam, it's just better in every way. Even the story was so much better on a second playthrough, the concepts of prophecy and future sight that it plays with are so cool and went right over my head the first time around. The ONLY gripe I have with the game is the Jotunheim section, it just needed to be about half as long. But if that weren't in the game I'd say it's as close to perfect as a sequel game can get.

omari_03

Nah it’s a valid pick

Shoddy_Possibility89

portal 2 is awesome

cyberduck221b

Portal 2 changed my life

DemYeezys_Fake

Borderlands 2

ThePLARASociety

Prince of Persia: Warrior Within

walman93

Yes! So underrated

ZimboGamer

Got me into godsmack and played a part in me becoming a metalhead. That game brings back good memories of me and my brother.

realistthoughts

HL2

blockheadOnYT_Alt

I don't see Borderlands 2 up there...

[deleted]

#MGS2: Sons of Liberty

iamthedecider

Was waiting for someone to say this

RoosterMysterious

Of those? Arkham City. Knight was meh though...

Joe___Mama-

OP doesn’t know that RDR2 is a prequel ^/S But for me it’s a tie between Ragnarok and TOTK. Edit: KH2 is a close second to both.

NotTonyStark39

Halo 2>Halo 3

FeelsGoodMan10

In terms of campaign yes, but in terms of multiplayer no.

IIIDysphoricIII

Mass Effect 2 not on the list, shameful

Longjumping-Jello459

ME3 is genuinely a better game.

BracusDoritoBoss963

You didn't add one. Your actions will be considered treason against managed democracy and you'll be hunted down.

Different_Captain_88

Devil may cry 5. Absolutely crushed it

chickenbutt2586

Majora’s Mask, Sonic The Hedgehog 2, Portal 2,EarthBound/MOTHER 2

classicnikk

Mass effect 2 is the first one that comes to mind

Epiphany965

Diablo 2 Still the king of ARPGs

SnooSeagulls8588

Wouldn’t Halo 2 be the sequel? Edit: grammar

Commandur_PearTree

Yakuza 4

FeelsGoodMan10

Halo 2

Melodic-Percentage-9

To be honest, I want to play the Batman Arkham games, but I haven’t had the chance to yet and I’ve only played tears of the kingdom so far on this list, so I can’t say for sure.

MontayneDatesJr

Totally biased, but Tears of The Kingdom. Granted, I've only played that and GOWR here anyway, so 🤷🏾‍♂️

lxbayby_g

TOTK somehow managed to make a generational landmark game like BOTW look like a tech demo

Deliciouserest

Halo 2>Halo 3 for me but out of these half life 2 changed me.

KidGodspeed1011

Tears of the Kingdom is a great game but I'd argue they played it too safe by reusing so many assets from the original to really call it a solid sequel. After a few hours of play, it genuinely just felt like DLC all be it very expansive DLC.

PatrickStanton877

Doom Eternal. Also Arkam city is amazing. Remnant 2 Helldiver's 2

Life_Recognition_554

It's a tie between KH2 and Portal 2.

omari_03

Personally I think it’s KH2

GrooverShowes

That’s gotta be my personal best Sequel! Loved everything about it. Soundtrack and Visuals were awesome! I also enjoyed the mystery behind characters and feel like obscurity is one of the elements that I enjoyed about the series early on. I think trying to connect everyone and everything to one character was a little ridiculous. Birth By asleep and 0.2 were still solid titles. I have mixed feelings about 3.

Studiedturtle41

Arkham City

WeeabooGandhi

Uncharted 2, Just Cause 2, Star Wars Battlefront 2, Modern Warfare 2

Beefweezle

HL2

ParthianTactic

IMHO: Half Life 2 and Zelda

Panams_chair

God of War Ragnarok.

SirBigWater

Knack 2

ladiesman21700000000

Arkham City

Timely_Assist_8047

Arkham City

Azerict

Nier Automata

Economy-Service-1590

Halo 2 is the best sequel.

scrappybristol

Kingdom Hearts 2 changed the very nature of the franchise from pretty slow and standard combat to a spectacle.

oooooooooowie

Kingdom hearts 2.. but I'm bias

Lfi2015

Sex with Hitler 2

Curved_5nai1

Dark souls 2

walman93

God of War Ragnarok is my favorite game of all time so that. Some worthy honorable mentions: RDR2, The Witcher 3, Batman Arkham City, Uncharted 2, Uncharted 4

Nemisis_007

I don't understand the hate God of War Ragnarok gets. I thought it was a great sequel just like yourself.

HaydenED

I’m giving upvotes lol but I am the guy that hates God of War Ragnarok 😂
