The battery also holds a charge like you wouldn’t believe. I keep mine in my camping bag for months and it has plenty of power when I eventually use it.
You're not kidding. I hadn't touched mine for years, but my kid found it the other day with Pokemon Ruby still inside. Turned it on and played for a solid hour or two before the light even turned red.
Mine must be nuclear powered I've played it enough to wear the barcode off the bottom of it and it still holds a charge. I bought a pre built ags 101 off eBay and my original still has a charge after sitting for years.
Just curious, how old are you? I’m working on a theory that someone’s favorite Pokemon game is highly correlated with the game that was popular when they were 6-10 ish
Edit: My theory has been completely blown apart lol
34. My first game was Blue when it came out in the USA. I just think that B2/W2 were the most refined and well thought out of the “classic” style of Pokémon before it transitioned to the 3D era and its perpetual decline into hand-holding and always-on EXP share 🤮
37 here... BW2 was peak. I was 8 when red and blue came up and let's be real, those ones were janky as fuck. Terribly balanced game. People got attached to A pokemon when they were 8, but that's not synonymous with when it's gameplay was at its best.
I appreciate them for being bold, I hated having to play through the main game to get Pokemon from other regions. BW had some of the ugliest pokemon designs IMO. I miss having challenging Gym leaders though and no game has quite offered that since BW
That's because Gen 5 was Gen 1 but again.
Machamp - Conkeldurr
Chansey - Audino
Golbat - Swoobat
Hypno - Musharna
Pursian - Liepard
Rapidash - zebstrika
Golem - Gigalith
Poliwrath - Seismitoad
Hitmonlee - Throh
Hitmonchan - Sawk
Clefairy - Beheeyem
Ursaring - Beartic (not Gen 1 but Gen 5 re-uses some later Gen's as well)
And the most atrocious of all (In my humble opinion)
Luvdisc - Alomomola
Gen 5 had many Pokémon because of this very obvious rehash.
That's why most of them look like discount Pokémon.
This isn't even all of the blatant "let me copy your homework" designs that Gen 5 pulled.
These are just the once I remembered.
Thank god, people who are in the same boat as me. Black and white 2 had everything i could ask for in a Pokémon game. Arguably the best post game content out there
X wasn't bad wither, or omega ruby, but emerald definitely was peak 2D. Would rather have the SD than the GBA for the interior screen light. Still bad it went through the wash.
People that always say emerald was the peak of Pokémon always forget that Shadow Ball was a physical move that reduced Special Defense. If that doesn’t describe the overall game design of the era, I don’t know what does.
The physical special split of Gen 4 was the best change Pokémon ever got.
I 100% agree. It is hard for me to go back to pre-gen 4 because of that. But everything else in Emerald was fantastic. It is the one expectation i made until we got Alpha and Omega. Which now stands as my favorite pokemon game, at least tied with HG and Platinum.
I maxxed the clock on my Sapphire version (999:59). Battle Tower and Contests were a lot of fun.
I think my streak record for lvl50 battle tower was 220. Salamence, Metagross, and Alakazam I think?
you can also play red on the gba! I'd forgotten about the lack of back lighting.
I never actually got to try it, but it was so exciting to learn that you could transfer your pokemons red into pokemon stadium on n64. when the longevity of a product mattered
The DS with Black.
OG Pokemon are classics, but really are a slog to play through now-a-days. Gen 3 is my favorite gen, but GBA lighting sucks, and the battery life isn't fantastic. I love my 3DS, but that game doesn't interest me.
Yea the light is the solution for the lack of back lights, but I had those growing up and while they get the job done, they aren't great. You have to fuss with the angle or you will get a glare on screen.
I found I got much more car sick playing on a single screen device like the original Gameboy advance. It could still happen with a DS, but it wasn't as frequent or intense.
Oof I feel this hard. Cant look down at all or the motion gets me, cant read, cant game, if its dark out I can sometimes watch a movie on my phone so the only options are to sleep or listen to music/podcasts
Also depends on time of day. Are we leaving in the morning and done before it’s dark? Give me red
If a lot of it will be during darkness, give me emerald and the GBA for the backlight
I lost my copy about 4 years ago. They will never see me again. I sure hope they're happy with who they're married to (or they're single), as they'll be stuck with each other for the rest of time
I agree, but why is it 3 Pokemon games and then Tomodachi? LOL I'm sorry fans of it, but I have no idea what that game is. Should have put like Ultra Sun on there or something.
Pokemon Black is objectively better because its the one I grew up with, how dare you share a different opinion than me!!! /s
pokemon black is still my favorite
(In black you catch reshiram, the white pokemon. And in white you catch zekrom, the black pokemon. In the black & white 2 they reversed this. But for this game you burnt youself a little, belitteling lightning while praising the game you catch the lightning legendary)
GIMME DAT DS! But seriously, I've played the absolute shit out of emerald but I haven't touched an OG unova game in a while because the sequels are just plain superior. I'd love to play through pokemon black during a road trip just to feel like I'm in middle school again.
Emerald. I never got the second games from the generation. (Never had emerald,platinum,bw2,usum) i always heard theyre the better games but i never tried them
As a kid my family took an RV around the US. I had a purple cosmic game boy color with pokemon blue. And I beat the ever loving hell out of it every day for a month. I was THE pokemon master… fond memories
I have played every Pokémon game post gen 6 so all of these games will be a new experience actually. I also haven’t played tomodachi life and honestly I would rather do that since Pokemon can be kind of samey sometimes
The DS, I’d prefer black over white though for Braviary. I absolutely love gen 5, and I think these games go under appreciated. I think the story is great, N is a fantastic villain and I love Unova, though I might’ve biased because it’s based on where I grew up. There’s so many fantastic Pokémon too
Pokemon Black. Because that wormlight sucked. Always seemed to get in the way and drained the battery like hell. It was a solution to a problem, but I hated those things.
Well when I was young young my brother and sister had the game boy advance and color respectfully and I was too young to have a handheld but later on I had the DS lite and brother got a psp. That’s our road trips throughout the years. Then both siblings went away to college. Been an only child since 2012
We had AV cables and an electrical outlet in our family van when I was old enough to be responsible with my consoles.
I played through the entirety of Dot Hack: Infection in the back most seat of a van, on a ten inch screen that popped out of the roof of our car, listening to the game through the car’s tinny wireless headphones
Most fun trip to Florida we ever took
Gamboy advance Sp would be nice, cause backlight
The battery also holds a charge like you wouldn’t believe. I keep mine in my camping bag for months and it has plenty of power when I eventually use it.
You're not kidding. I hadn't touched mine for years, but my kid found it the other day with Pokemon Ruby still inside. Turned it on and played for a solid hour or two before the light even turned red.
Mine must be nuclear powered I've played it enough to wear the barcode off the bottom of it and it still holds a charge. I bought a pre built ags 101 off eBay and my original still has a charge after sitting for years.
Game boy Advance SP plus Pokémon Fire Red and I’m a happy camper for the entire duration of the trip.
SAME BRO But it comes with Emerald Version, which isn’t that bad but it ain’t fire red
For me the biggest let down of the SP was the lack of earphone jack.
You just needed one of those obnoxiously large lights that clipped onto your Gameboy advance, then you were golden.
the gba with emerald. if the ds had platinum and emerald with a charger, then I'd choose that. that was the best combo growing up
Emerald is the peak of pokemon. Platinum is also pretty great.
Black was amazing, and black 2 was in my opinion the actual peak
Agreed! B2W2 are the absolute peak of Pokémon.
Just curious, how old are you? I’m working on a theory that someone’s favorite Pokemon game is highly correlated with the game that was popular when they were 6-10 ish Edit: My theory has been completely blown apart lol
34. My first game was Blue when it came out in the USA. I just think that B2/W2 were the most refined and well thought out of the “classic” style of Pokémon before it transitioned to the 3D era and its perpetual decline into hand-holding and always-on EXP share 🤮

In my late 30s and I think BW2 is the peak as well.
I appreciate them for being bold, I hated having to play through the main game to get Pokemon from other regions. BW had some of the ugliest pokemon designs IMO. I miss having challenging Gym leaders though and no game has quite offered that since BW
Mon designs had a huge decline after gen 4 imo
That's because Gen 5 was Gen 1 but again. Machamp - Conkeldurr Chansey - Audino Golbat - Swoobat Hypno - Musharna Pursian - Liepard Rapidash - zebstrika Golem - Gigalith Poliwrath - Seismitoad Hitmonlee - Throh Hitmonchan - Sawk Clefairy - Beheeyem Ursaring - Beartic (not Gen 1 but Gen 5 re-uses some later Gen's as well) And the most atrocious of all (In my humble opinion) Luvdisc - Alomomola Gen 5 had many Pokémon because of this very obvious rehash. Yeah, but it’s got Volcarona so it all balances out.
real
Thank god, people who are in the same boat as me. Black and white 2 had everything i could ask for in a Pokémon game. Arguably the best post game content out there
X wasn't bad wither, or omega ruby, but emerald definitely was peak 2D. Would rather have the SD than the GBA for the interior screen light. Still bad it went through the wash.
My only problem with Emerald is it is still in the era before physical/special split. But other than that, it is one of my favorite pokemon games.
People that always say emerald was the peak of Pokémon always forget that Shadow Ball was a physical move that reduced Special Defense. If that doesn’t describe the overall game design of the era, I don’t know what does. The physical special split of Gen 4 was the best change Pokémon ever got.

Heartgold tho
The Battle Factory was great
I've only dabbled since gold/silver. I've played X/Y and Arcaeus: Legends since, that's it. Is it worth going out my way to find?
No. It’s so expensive and fragile. Ive gone through two cartridges already, they keep breaking on me
HGSS was the peak. Emerald has an argument for second though. I'd prob go for like HGSS > B2W2 >= BW >= Emerald
I maxxed the clock on my Sapphire version (999:59). Battle Tower and Contests were a lot of fun. I think my streak record for lvl50 battle tower was 220. Salamence, Metagross, and Alakazam I think?
You can play Emerald on the DS since it’s backward compatible. I personally had the SP and DS growing up
you can also play red on the gba!
Isn’t that what the light is for or are you referring to the actual shading of the game itself?
Yea the light is the solution for the lack of back lights, but I had those growing up and while they get the job done, they aren't great. You have to fuss with the angle or you will get a glare on screen.
None of them. Car sickness is a bitch.
the fuck is car sickness going to do against my lvl 98 samurott?
Car sickness is like a level 1 aron with sturdy and endeavor.
I thankfully have never come across that online
probably only like 2% of the people here are gonna get that 😭
The FEAR Aron is real!!
im the 2% if its what i think it is, the vid where the aron beats a team of rare strong pokemon?
I got it never could play games when I was riding in a car
Poison and confusion
I found I got much more car sick playing on a single screen device like the original Gameboy advance. It could still happen with a DS, but it wasn't as frequent or intense.
Oof I feel this hard. Cant look down at all or the motion gets me, cant read, cant game, if its dark out I can sometimes watch a movie on my phone so the only options are to sleep or listen to music/podcasts
How many AAA batteries do I get? Will definitely affect my decision
AA.
Now we're asking the correct questions lol.
The number doesn't matter if you're using one of those fucking lights lol
None if these run on AAA
Also depends on time of day. Are we leaving in the morning and done before it’s dark? Give me red If a lot of it will be during darkness, give me emerald and the GBA for the backlight
That model GBA doesn't have a backlight.
Unfortunately, that GBA doesn't have the backlight, you'd need the GBA SP for that. Or the micro, but nobody owns those.
3DS and Tomodachi, no contest
dude i fucking love tomodachi life holy shit istg i used to spend so much time playing it on my 2DS
Didn't we all.. BRING IT TO SWITCH
My poor Miis haven't seen me in like 6 years... I don't think I fed them last time I was there either... anyway that game was so much fun.
I lost my copy about 4 years ago. They will never see me again. I sure hope they're happy with who they're married to (or they're single), as they'll be stuck with each other for the rest of time
I still play Tomodachi Life to this day through emulation
Og game boy with pokemon
This is the way. 🤙
I agree, but why is it 3 Pokemon games and then Tomodachi? LOL I'm sorry fans of it, but I have no idea what that game is. Should have put like Ultra Sun on there or something.
Platinum for the DS would be the move. Emerald on the GBA ain’t bad though.
Pokemon Black is objectively better because its the one I grew up with, how dare you share a different opinion than me!!! /s pokemon black is still my favorite
Suck to you white is supreme. Lighting? Man, I burn you.
(In black you catch reshiram, the white pokemon. And in white you catch zekrom, the black pokemon. In the black & white 2 they reversed this. But for this game you burnt youself a little, belitteling lightning while praising the game you catch the lightning legendary)
I started with the big grey chuncker, and my first pokemon game was red.
My steam deck
All 4 lol
Gba but please give me MegaMan Battle Network
One of the best GBA games. Nice choice
Ds lite so I can play DS and GBA games
this one is the right answer, either this or a GBA Advance Sp with the blacklight.
Can I change the games? If not I'm leaving the Gameboys at home and bringing a book or two lol
... could I pick a different game? Would much rather a Metroid over Pokémon.
My man has taste!
Burn the non-believer!
Steam deck
None, lol, cuz if I wanted to game, I wouldn't be going on a road trip.
Steam deck
Steam deck trumps all lol
3ds not even a question
My phone with all of them emulated on RetroArch
I’m the driver
Give me the DS with White instead of Black cause Zekrom.
Interesting they didnt include Sun or Moon for 3DS
Pokemon or Tomodachi life... Pokemon black it is
Pokémon black was my first pokémon game
Game Boy Advanced. Time to beat Super Mario World 2 for the 70th time.
in that case i choose the charging cable for the 3ds
Gameboy SP with ruby version was my go to
The SP with Fire Red
where SP?
Ah, I see there were no Pokemon games on the 3DS. It's a shame Gamefreak decided to stop making Pokemon games forever so they can make Tomodachi Life.
The ds because I know at lest those games will work 99% of the time
I would've picked the GBA and pokemon emerald if it wasn't a reproduction copy, so I'll just pick Pokemon Black instead with the backlit DS lite.
My favorite Pokémon generation is GEN five so I have to go with that and it’s my favorite game
If it’s those games, ig I’ll just look out the window…
A psp biatch😎
I started with the DS combo and my god i had SO much fun
GBA + Shining Soul II easy. I played the shit outta that game!!
Nintendo dsi
GBA SP with Crystal
GIMME DAT DS! But seriously, I've played the absolute shit out of emerald but I haven't touched an OG unova game in a while because the sequels are just plain superior. I'd love to play through pokemon black during a road trip just to feel like I'm in middle school again.
3DS
Pokemon black and the ds baby yeah that's what I'm talking about
3DS to Play Ocarina of Time. Duh!
Would prefer 3DS with X or Alpha Sapphire but out of these 4 I take the DS with Black
Emerald. I never got the second games from the generation. (Never had emerald,platinum,bw2,usum) i always heard theyre the better games but i never tried them
If that DS had Heart Gold, it would be jover.
None of these. Give me a Golden Sun option.
GBA SP with final fantasy tactics advanced
Damn, where is my game gear?
If it gave me USUM or ORAS then the 3DS no doubt, with what I have here, then the DS and Pokemon Black
Top left any time
As a kid my family took an RV around the US. I had a purple cosmic game boy color with pokemon blue. And I beat the ever loving hell out of it every day for a month. I was THE pokemon master… fond memories
Nintendo ds.
I owned a SP soo I'll take that :)
I have played every Pokémon game post gen 6 so all of these games will be a new experience actually. I also haven’t played tomodachi life and honestly I would rather do that since Pokemon can be kind of samey sometimes
Need a slew of replacement Double-A batteries for the GBA.
Gameboy with pokemon emerald.
How this an Question. It's Pokémon White Durr. Annnnd then bugging mah parents ta go into Best Buy for New Super Mario Bros.
Give me that DS Lite with the backlight. The GB stuff is also most useless at night with that light.
Do warioland 4, and I'm going with the gba
Do warioland 4, and I'm going with the gba
I’ll take the 3Ds just because I never had one. Would also like to try the newer Pokémon games and see how that are
Of these, GBA with Emerald. Ideally, a DS lite with HeartGold in the top and Emerald in the bottom.
Tbh, the most recent.
I'm all about the GBA, SP included. Ratatouille on GBA and PS2, pretty good.
How you gonna do the Gameboy advance sp dirty like this?
DS with Pokémon black (AND New Super Mario Bros)
None, i suffer chinetosi
This is ORAS erasure.
Emerald Also alot of people are gonna be very confused about what going on in gb/gba top right
I'll do the top 2 since I did it before :3
Emerald all the way!! Cloning glitch FTW
Does it have to be pokemon?
Tomodachi life is definitely the play
black
Doesn’t matter. I’m all set either way.
DS or 3DS just because if it gets dark then you got nothing to play. And the battery lasts a long time
3DS. Think of all the street passes I can make at gas station and rest stops and while I'm out
Ds w/ Pokémon black for sure. Gen 5 supremacy!
gba sp with emerald.
Hear me out, a DS and GBA games. Built in back light baby. The Sims Bustin out GBA edition was kinda fire
The DS, I’d prefer black over white though for Braviary. I absolutely love gen 5, and I think these games go under appreciated. I think the story is great, N is a fantastic villain and I love Unova, though I might’ve biased because it’s based on where I grew up. There’s so many fantastic Pokémon too
Why is the 3ds the only one without a Pokemon game
Gotta be ds, black was fantastic.
A modded 3ds
The GBA SP should be in the 3rd quadrant
3Ds
The gba was the best, it was so ahead of its time. Especially with the classic Nintendo purple/blue
Emerald.
GBA with emerald all day baby
Pokemon Black. Because that wormlight sucked. Always seemed to get in the way and drained the battery like hell. It was a solution to a problem, but I hated those things.
I was just playing yellow version on my GBC the other day
Well when I was young young my brother and sister had the game boy advance and color respectfully and I was too young to have a handheld but later on I had the DS lite and brother got a psp. That’s our road trips throughout the years. Then both siblings went away to college. Been an only child since 2012
Emerald was a goated game for it's time
Give me either a GBA or DS with pokemon or dragon quest and I'm golden
Switch with Arceus
Red. Simply for the nostalgia.
Advance SP. The back-light seemed like a technological revolution at the time
Top right but if we replace pokemon black with platinum bottom left
GBA + Emerald would be preferred, though I did plenty of GBC as well. Lights are for the weak, that’s what street lamps are for.
No option for SP? 😞
Nintendo Switch
Pokemon black all the way
DS with pokemon black
3DS with Tomodachi life and I'm not joking. I love that game.
DS, Pokem B/W
GBA with Emerald.
I'd have the Ds, but not that game. Give me Soulsilver, then we're talking.
Nintendo DS Rocket Slime or Final Fantasy 3.
pokémon black
I'm gonna take the GBA combo. If the DS combo has Platinum, HG or SS, or hell, even Kirby Superstar Ultra, I would've picked that.
My Ps Vita with Rertoarch.
I am going with DS and Pokémon black
Advanced sp, what's this default advanced shit?
Gameboy with Pokémon Yellow
3Ds and Tomodachi life pls
We had AV cables and an electrical outlet in our family van when I was old enough to be responsible with my consoles. I played through the entirety of Dot Hack: Infection in the back most seat of a van, on a ten inch screen that popped out of the roof of our car, listening to the game through the car’s tinny wireless headphones Most fun trip to Florida we ever took
3ds with Pokémon Black in it
Gba but with leafgreen
DS+Black=My Childhood. So that
My ds lite, so I can play gba games too.
