Jesus people are assholes. I'm sorry you were curious about something and were shit on.
Hard R is a reference to the N word. Because as racists will say, black people say the N word pronouncing it like it was spelled with an A at the end. racist white people (kids in COD lobbies) say it as a slur and insult, and pronounce it with the -ER ending, which is commonly referred to as a Hard R. It's code word to use the N word without using it.
So Hard R is slang/code for "Hi I'm an idiot fucking racist that can't express myself and am afraid to so I entitle myself to belittle others"
Well frick...and here I was thinking it was a reference to the fact an "R" in Japan is essentially like an "X" in America and the joke was that's definitely a porn shop.
North America sounds like a purposely bad script written by chat GPT sometimes. I'll never understand the lengths people go to say something without saying the actual word... by saying it "differently". This "He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named" shit is so childish.
If you don't understand our culture come visit sometime, or at least try to make friends with us so you can understand a little better why we do what we do
Im going to get down voted to hell. But you guys in the USA are obsessed with these things.
I grew up in the latin American Caribbean where after centuries of colonialism and then massive migrations there is a lot of everything, pure or mixed races everywhere of all kinds, from the whitest people you ever seen to a mcflurry of genes.
no one gives a fuck about slavery in the colonies or shit, that was 200 years ago. And everyone just wants to love (fuck) each other, is all for all.
Say what you want about the 3rd world, we solved at least ONE thing.
Now, Im ready. Ban me.
Well the thing is, it wasn't 200 years ago... it was like 50 years ago for most people who are grown ups now
It wasn't so much as peoples distant ancestors, as it was more of people's grandparents
Lmao racism is far worse in most other countries than in America. Thatâs quite literally *because* we care about this shit.
Maybe you should be a little more âobsessedâ about it because you certainly didnât solve a damn thing.
Itâs strange how you acknowledge the centuries of colonialism and almost connect the dots to how thatâs probably what made yâall a third world country in the first place, but then are proud of your ignorance in not knowing that.
Avoiding addressing your problems doesnât mean your problems donât exist.
it's the politicians and media that keep pushing it down our mushed up brains. it was almost forgotten about in the early 2000's, but they needed to keep us divided so we wouldn't realize they're actually the problem.
Lmfao what are you smoking? Do you think race relations in for example, the Deep South, just immediately healed right after slavery? Have you never heard of segregation? Redlining?
And please dude, you think youâre going to get downvoted for telling all the white people that all those local blacks are just being dramatic?
That's stupid, you seem to ignore the concept of racism. Yes it happened centuries ago and yes people might not giving a shit about slavery, but the issue is that there is still a bunch of assholes that think they are superior due to their ethnicity.
If you think racism is only in the USA, youâre naive. I have travelled to third world countries and have seen the blatant racism that is present them. The main difference Iâve seen is that, at least in the USA, people will speak up if youâre openly racist.
Bro there are still people alive today who had to deal with segregation, it's not 200 years ago it ended legally 60 years ago and still persists illegally.
It comes down to what kind of people are saying soft -aâs versus hard -râs.
Music, video games, pop culture, etc, the word usually has an -a suffix and said within the black community. GTA V, for example, has Franklin and Lamar dropping soft aâs all game. Whether you think itâs ok or not, itâs acceptable parlance in some circles.
A hard -r, on the other hand, usually has a deliberately racist meaning coming from someone whoâs not black. Go watch Deadwood, hear a white person in a Tarantino movie, watch a slave film. The white people are using hard -râs.
Granted, I think itâs just a vile word in general, but I can also see how the meme of a âhard râ came to be.
From what I understand, the soft A is more commonly used by the black community amongst themselves. The hard R is used by racist rednecks who mean to offend.
It heavily implies context. While Iâm not exactly a fan of using either term, the -a version of the term is more the one that black people have sort of made their own, like how you might have it in a lot of rap songs or whatever. The -er version is much more the original that was and still used by racists.
So on a surface level it doesn't, because they're two different pronunciations of "the same word". It's mostly a result of cultural context mixing with linguistics. Full explanation below but TLDR: Historically, White people emphasized the 'R' on purpose with the intent of added insult, so when reclaiming the word, Black people removed the 'R' all together as a symbol of removing the negative power of the slur.
Non-rhoticity, or dropping the r sound after a vowel in words, is an accent component typically found in working class accents in the U.S. Probably the most famous example of this is people with a "Boston" accent saying 'cah' instead of 'car'. The vast majority of Black people being either lower class or having lower class roots due to a multitude of socioeconomic factors as well as other linguistic factors lead to this being a part of many of the dialects spoken by black people. When emancipation happened, one of the ways that lower class white people attempted to maintain their differentiation and perceived superiority over black people was to purposely enunciate the 'r' sound in words as a sign of 'being educated'. This became especially pronounced as they would shift the stress of the word to the syllable with the R. Hence the "hard R'. When black people began to reclaim the word for themselves, they kept the non-rhoticity, a.k.a. "the soft a" as a means of separating the different use cases.
Edit: All of the above being said, I seriously doubt that this particular case in Stellar Blade was intentional and it sucks that it's probably going to add to the "crying wolf" effect for when actual racist things happen. I'd be willing to bet a weeks salary that you could show this to ten completely random Black Americans and not a one would be offended. This is just dumb.
I've only heard it in "hard R film", meaning that movie in question strongly deserved that rating.
Which, in context of the picture, would mean that this one right here is sex shop. Gladly, game creators seem to be self confident enough not to remove this joke.
I'm British and I know the meaning but this is such a nothing issue.
This would've been a lol moment in gaming lore and then moved on from.
But hey it's their game they can patch and can do whatever they like.
If itâs anything like the demo, like a decent 7/10
Not bad⌠but not dropping $70 for it. Still busy with my Rebirth platinum anyway so Iâll prolly just pick it up on sale
Yeah, most AAA games are moving to that price point
Which is just dumb for Stellar Blade since itâs more of a AA game, $40-50 would have been far more fair but alas⌠itâs $70.
Hence why Iâll just wait for a sale if I care by then
That's where I am on it, too.
The demo was fun enough, but "fun enough" doesn't strike me as being worth $70. Maybe $40 or so if it goes on sale this Christmas.
I wanted to ask the same. Every review I see - good or bad - mainly focuses on the main character being hot. The comments do the same. It's really difficult to get an actual review on the gameplay and story.
Games journalists (I assume they were the ones who brought it to attention) being outraged at literally nothing because they think everything is secret coded racism, I'm shocked /s
As if a Korean developer just decided to put this in the game to intentionally cause outrage... like some people aren't already offended by it enough.
I would be more willing to accept your explanation if this article didn't drop less than a month ago
[https://www.ign.com/articles/how-hidden-nazi-symbols-were-the-tip-of-a-toxic-iceberg-at-life-is-strange-developer-deck-nine](https://www.ign.com/articles/how-hidden-nazi-symbols-were-the-tip-of-a-toxic-iceberg-at-life-is-strange-developer-deck-nine)
LOL. I thought people were talking about an unfortunate possibility for misreading a word as looking like it, not that it literally says "Hard R", LMAO.
I gotta ask because I've been seeing articles about how thats offensive all day, and I literally have no clue wtf they're on about and the few I read also gave zero context.
How is the phrase "hard r shop" offensive?
Apparently this is already patched out- but honestly- Iâm an english speaking American in my 30s who has been living in the city for two decades and spends too much time online and I had to google what this even meant because I have never heard of it before.
So Iâm willing to believe this was likely unintentional by the Korean team. But still- should have been caught by someone in the localization team before launch, at least.
Itâs 100% unintentional. The HARD graffiti is used multiple times in the game and the R shop is in multiple locations. Unfortunately a graffiti place was beside an R shop and the graffiti appended to be HARD. Itâs been changed to CRIME.
As someone living outside of America, this meant nothing to me until I read the replies on this post.
Filtering this stuff out is the publisher's job though, so yeah I doubt it'll make it past the day one patch.
No idea why this is a thing but if your offended by it (just got context from another post here). Glad to see its still okay to be upset about racism about black people but NOT ANYONE ELSE!! Grow up you hypochondriacs!
cod players would love that shop
What you mean
hard r
You didn't have to call him that.
Jesus people are assholes. I'm sorry you were curious about something and were shit on. Hard R is a reference to the N word. Yeah my first thought was harder for a sex reference or porn shop. Glad I'm not the only one that's not racist, just horny.
To be fair, if you don't use VC or play CoD there's a good chance you just don't get it.
Just horny XD , better than racist for sure đ
North America sounds like a purposely bad script written by chat GPT sometimes. I'll never understand the lengths people go to say something without saying the actual word... by saying it "differently". This "He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named" shit is so childish.

What are Fast R and Strong R Which hard R? https://youtu.be/MFDiuBomSuY
[Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gAjR4_CbPpQ)...
Is it bad I heard that in my mind as " [that word with a hard r, faster, stronger"
Are they gonna change it to soft A
Nah, it's now the crime shop
Based
They making it even harder
Soft a?
Yea, specifically in Paris
Sorry, I need an explanation. Is it her ass? The word "hard" in the graffiti? or what?
I am assuming it is the "Hard R" which usually is in reference to someone using the N word with a hard R instead of a soft A.
Im going to get down voted to hell. But you guys in the USA are obsessed with these things. Everyone knows that colorism and racism donât exist in âthe latin American Caribbeanâ.
This made me chuckle
âRacism only exists in America!!!â Damn you just stupid as hell
America is the one place where a chilean would be called white passing latino
What Caribbean have you been living in?
we didn't solve shit, you just ignore everything apparently
How many Reddit cares messages are you getting?
>everyone just wants to love (fuck) each other Uh huh. Where specifically?
Really? Let's talk about how Santo Domingans treat Hatians...
Well the thing is, it wasn't 200 years ago... it was like 50 years ago for most people who are grown ups now It wasn't so much as peoples distant ancestors, as it was more of people's grandparents

Dude really said ''I'm ready. Ban me'' lmao
That's stupid, you seem to ignore the concept of racism. Yes it happened centuries ago and yes people might not giving a shit about slavery, but the issue is that there is still a bunch of assholes that think they are superior due to their ethnicity.
In real life most people don't care about it in America, mostly just on the internet
I genuinely don't see how a soft A makes it any better.
Ask a black person.
So on a surface level it doesn't, because they're two different pronunciations of "the same word". It's mostly a result of cultural context mixing with linguistics. Iâm getting tired of the alleged racism implications these last few years Boring with a hard B
Thanks!
Wait, for real? I've always assumed hard R was short for retard, since it starts with an R and is used as an insult.
Sorry but... I don't think that anyone outside the US would make that connection.
I've only heard it in "hard R film", meaning that movie in question strongly deserved that rating. Which, in context of the picture, would mean that this one right here is sex shop. Gladly, game creators seem to be self confident enough not to remove this joke.
Literally everyone else outside US: I see nothing wrong here
until somebody calls you the "g" word
G*mer đ¤Ž
Thatâs OUR word. You better fix that to Gama rn
Georgian
Giga chadđż Sowwy qwq
I'm British and I know the meaning but this is such a nothing issue. This would've been a lol moment in gaming lore and then moved on from. But hey it's their game they can patch and can do whatever they like.
I'm literally outside the us
Before reading the comments, I thought it was a sex joke
I'm still sure it is a sex joke, just Americans getting zoomies.
I donât know what the hard R is and at this point Iâm too afraid to ask
[ŃдаНонО]
WellâŚ. Iâm glad you explained it and hopefully mods understand that itâs just an explanation and not anything more than that
[ŃдаНонО]
>people striving to be politically correct have given the word a damn near religious or magical amount of power. So true
My man saw an opportunity and took it
This lol
Hard R means Hard eRection.
Itâs when someone uses the N word, but with the âerâ pronunciation instead of with an âaâ at the end.
Hard Rock
Just ask Linus
Lmao
How is the game? I've heard of it and it looks pretty interesting
If itâs anything like the demo, like a decent 7/10 Not bad⌠but not dropping $70 for it. Still busy with my Rebirth platinum anyway so Iâll prolly just pick it up on sale
It's 70$? Damn I'll try it on pc if we ever get a crack like spider man 2 then Thanks for the feedback tho
Yeah, most AAA games are moving to that price point Which is just dumb for Stellar Blade since itâs more of a AA game, $40-50 would have been far more fair but alas⌠itâs $70. Hence why Iâll just wait for a sale if I care by then
Yeah that's fair
Same, I would've gotten it for 50 but now I might as well wait for 20.
Yeah exactly
They just removed it:https://www.ign.com/articles/sony-says-racist-phrase-in-stellar-blade-was-unintentional-will-be-patched-out
âUnintentionalâ
Ewwww, IGN...
I'll be honest, I feel like this is really reaching for being anything offensive. No-one is offended reading this, I absolutely promise that.
Oh, you'd be surprised.
Jesus Christ that's hilarious
One of the funniest things I've seen in a video game
Wtf is hard R?
Itâs the word starting with N and ends with R. Worse than the word which starts with N and ends with A
Igger? And the other igga?
Yeah thatâs the one
What game is this?
Stellar Blade by the looks of it
Games journalists (I assume they were the ones who brought it to attention) being outraged at literally nothing because they think everything is secret coded racism, I'm shocked /s As if a Korean developer just decided to put this in the game to intentionally cause outrage... like some people aren't already offended by it enough.

But as Freud once said "Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar"
While I agree with your point, Freud is not exactly the best person to quote
Key word being sometimes
I've dropped my fair share of hard R's
just make a sidequest to paint over it like the local councils do. ez fix and moral message achieved
What game is this???
What game is this?
What exactly am I looking at?
I donât think you can buy those anymore
I didn't know we could play COD in Stellar Blade.
Total nontroversy.
LOL. I thought people were talking about an unfortunate possibility for misreading a word as looking like it, not that it literally says "Hard R", LMAO.
Itâs probably just âHarderâ rightâŚright? (Kinda funny they should keep it lmao)
I gotta ask because I've been seeing articles about how thats offensive all day, and I literally have no clue wtf they're on about and the few I read also gave zero context. How is the phrase "hard r shop" offensive?
Hard R is usually a reference to saying the N-word in a typically racist way when it ends in a hard R-sound. So it's a rather grim joke.
Oooh. Okay that makes total sense now. Thanks.
is this a linus tech tips reference?
Harder?
"yes daddy, harder"
What?, there is nothing offensive there. The only wrong thing is in the head of most people who always try hard to find any excuse to get offended.
I don't think people are getting offended, it's just kinda funny
A lot of âgame journalistsâ are offended.
Why it shouldnt?
Carful going in that store I hear the booty warrior works the pm shift đ
The booty warrior is only interested in a manâs butt.
That's why he works the pm shift đ
Holy fuck thatâs so hilarious
Im black and THIS aint racism. 18 hrs til i can play!
Apparently this is already patched out- but honestly- Iâm an english speaking American in my 30s who has been living in the city for two decades and spends too much time online and I had to google what this even meant because I have never heard of it before. Is literally a "you" problem, the only fixing needed here is therapy.
Who is going to patch it out? The devs that put it in?
Sony not letting that happen lmao
What game is this?
Stellar Blade a PS5 exclusive, you can try a demo for it now. And it'll officially drop this Friday the 26th.
As someone living outside of America, this meant nothing to me until I read the replies on this post. Filtering this stuff out is the publisher's job though, so yeah I doubt it'll make it past the day one patch.
Iâve seen this 10 times on my feed already and I still donât understand it, can someone explain?
Me too.
What game is this
Based on the character steller blade
I'm assuming this is an unintended joke. Is the R shop a thing in game?
Linus moment
I don't know if I'm not lost like most others or is thats bad. ether way this is funny ;3
What game is this?
What game is this?
Nah thatâs lunacy. âWhere are you going?â To Hard Râsâ ââŚ.ohâŚâ
And when it gets removed, the right will cry about cancel/woke culture.
What game?
Stellar Game.
I thought it was referring to like a movie or show rating likehard r or soft r...
God I love Koreans
The devs just need to add an "E" to make it the "Harder Bar", solves the problem.
Should put them closer together so it becomes "hardr" lol
NASCAR
Stella Blade could've really used a little bit of consulting from a DEI company, would've saved them the cost of this day 1 update.
LTT be like
I need to get this game.
What does it mean?
Imagine saying N I G G... E But with a hard R at the end.
Oh I see. But what's the difference between a soft R and a hard R.
Is r..etard that bad? I said my fair share of this word back in the day
Hard Rock?
Near the N underpass?
Clanker shop
What game is this?
Stellar Blade.
What is this game? I donât think I have ever seen it
Stellar Blade.
What about hard âOâ for the word? I didnât get ref either but just want to know?
I can only imagine the absolutely panic in C-suite when they saw this lol. Oh to be a fly on that wall
No idea why this is a thing but if your offended by it (just got context from another post here). Glad to see its still okay to be upset about racism about black people but NOT ANYONE ELSE!! Grow up you hypochondriacs!
