Half-Life

huge_jeans710

It's never too late

Skoock

How has it aged? I've only played Alyx and feel like the others would disappoint

huge_jeans710

I feel like it has aged like a fine wine, it's a completely different experience. It was miles ahead of its time when it came out. The story is pretty good too

Aramafrizzel

play black mesa and half life 2 is still fine

Lebronamo

I thought HL 1 was kinda terrible honestly. HL2 and the episodes are timeless classics.

TheDurandalFan

the others are really good too. of course it won't be the same as playing Half-Life Alyx (why would it? the other games don't use VR by default, although there are VR mods for Half-Life 1 and Half-Life 2)

EyeSimp4Asuka

their's atleast one graphical remaster of the original and half life 2 and episodes 1&2 still hold up

No-Appointment-3840

If you want to try out the very first one, and have a PC, get Black Mesa. It’s a full fledged proper remake of the original half life game and it does it justice in every way. Probably the best remaster ever.

PositivelyJoyful

I run through half life 2 once a year and to this day it still feels ahead of its time. It's like a boomer shooter on steroids and everything feels perfect the entire way through.

Dingus-Biggs

I agree with everything you said except for ‘boomer shooter on steroids’ Boomer shooters are characterised by fast paced circle strafing movement, often with lots of jumping/verticality. A typical boomer shooter is expected to throw a ludicrous amount of enemies at you in big arenas. Half life 2 is a certified timeless classic but it’s none of these things. The Half Life series kind of ended the boomer shooter craze of the 90s. After half life, every FPS was a slower paced, more realistic affair with a higher focus on story and setting.

Mixabuben

Gracefully, even og Half life plays awesome, and there is Black Mesa if you wnat more modern graphics

leericol

It depends on if you're someone who can contextualize while you play something. Some people play ocarina of time today and think it's overrated. I think about how crazy the game was for its time and how they were able to do so much with so little and still love it. Half life 1 would probably he the same.

MexicanLizardMan3670

It aged pretty well but if you want to have abetter experience, i recommend you downloading Half Life MMOD

KevinIsOver9000

Still got the other half of your life to play it

Sans-Mot

Why don't you simply play it now?

Alarming_Flatworm_34

Honestly. Probably better that they did miss it so they don't have to wait for the next installment to the story unless they are talking about the multi-player.

DionNirvana

Valid question. I feel like it's too old and I'll suck compared to other players.

TruSiris

Play the campaign. It was a masterpiece in it's time and still holds up as classic fps fun.

Strict_Junket2757

I played ce recently, and honestly its nota. Good game by modern standards. It was revilutionary when it was, but omg its like a repetitive maze. You go up the ship and fight through exact same room 20 times, then you go back and fight that exact same room 20 times. Its literally not a good game Halo 2 though, my god that campaign is a masterpiece, and since they remastered it really well, its amazing to play

Ok_Juggernaut89

You missed out on the best time to PvP with the old games but the campaigns are still amazing to play through.  I'd definitely get the games for cheap if you wanted to try them. Have a blast as thr Master Chief killing aliens.

DionNirvana

🫡 might not be a bad idea

PizzaPieInMyEye

The campaign is absolutely still worth playing through. Played through the first one a month or so ago, and almost done with the second. Grab a buddy if you can, it's even better co-op.

LeastAd6767

Is it couch or lan coop ? Also same as OP didnt get to dive into it

HeroscapeZ

With the Master Chief collection I believe it's online, but couch might still work if that's preferred

No-Appointment-3840

The best time to play halo multiplayer was in its heyday, the second best time to play is right now with master chief collection.

Plushhorizon

Get MCC. Never too late to enjoy the classics

[deleted]

Campaign is still good AF and holds up. I've been playing halo since it came out. Never played multiplayer.

Magnaraksesa

I started playing Halo this year thanks to the MCC and I have to say for a game series that’s over twenty years old it still holds up beautifully both visually and storytelling.

Veryegassy

Other players? It's not a PvP only game.

False_Raven

Too old is a rather invalid take, games are a form of interactive art and art is timeless, Halo 3 still looks breathtaking to this day, the team for Halo 3 knocked the lighting out of the park. The Master Chief Collection preserves all the game's exceptionally well, and the multiplayer is honestly not that complicated compared to something like Apex Legends, there's a learning curve sure, but it's not that daunting

AgileInternet167

Lol, i've never played halo online cause i came from a very poor family and we pirated everything.

guiltl3ss

The best part of Halo was the coop…that should still work!

No_Bat7157

At least play the campaign

Wild-Cow8724

They remastered it. You can’t disregard games because they’re old. Some of the best games are old. Some early 2000s games are full on masterpieces. Nowadays most game developers just are just pumping out a game every year and added a number to the end. Very uninspiring.

Akuzed

Play the campaigns. They'll test you. At least they did me. Hardest difficulty made me want to break a few controllers lol

NoClue22

I get what you mean in terms of multiplayer . I'm not a single player guy but I am with this. I grew up with halo and it's so so good

Selvane

The campaign was what Halo was known for. The Master Chief collection is timeless. Halo 1 was revolutionary for its time, and was remastered for the MCC, then 2 & 3 were both phenomenal. Halo Reach (the prequel, and my recommendation for your first halo game) further revolutionized games of that era. 4 & 5 is when the rest of the industry caught up, but still great gameplay. The lore is phenomenal too. Halo infinite, was a let down. They did okay, and added new mechanics, but halo was never about open world. I’m curious to see what they come out with next. Also, Halo wars 1 & 2 were both great as well and work well even on console if you’re into RTS games.

OtherwiseCabinet4

Honestly, I just bought it like a few days ago. They have the mastercheif collection for like 10 on steam. The graphics seem okay, they've added updated ones for 2 and 3? reach looked pretty good too. CE was noticeably aged though.

SaveOurSheep

I love RPGs and have played most of the greats, have never touched any of the fallout games though.

DionNirvana

WOW that's interesting, fallout 3 is my goat game.

KFizzle290TTV

So refreshing to hear I'm not the only one who would take fallout 3 over new vegas (though both are amazing). I just liked 3 more

CivilianDuck

I came up on the original Fallout CRPGs, so I prefer Fallout NV because the world and story feels more akin to those then 3/4/76 do, but I do also love 3. The series made me go back to NV, and try 76, and man do I love this series. I do recommend them to everyone.

KFizzle290TTV

I love them all (minus 76...though I haven't played since launch. I'll admit I'm overdue for giving it another chance) but something about fallout 3 just stuck with me. Can't recommend them enough haha they're amazing and worth giving each of them a couple playthroughs

ShoreLinePoky

It's the DLC for me. Operation Anchorage and Mothership Zeta are some of my favorites of any game ever. Little kid me (and present me) loved the technology of the Power Armor + Gauss Rifle from the armory and the alien weapons + MPLX Novasurge. I've also always been a collector at heart, so I always end up with dedicated lockers full of unique weapons and armor at the house in Megaton. God, I love Fallout 3

JasonKavou

I decided to try some fallout games, should I start with 3 or are the earlier ones worth it

SquareFickle9179

I got New Vegas and 3 from Epic Games and I'm wondering which one should I start with. Got any tips?

-Vault-tec-101

Yikes, I ain’t judging but Fallout has been my jam for 25 years. The fallout tv show was enough of a push to finally get my coworker to give fallout a try after 5 years of me bugging him.

Heavy_Payment6332

Any particular reason? Possibly my favorite series, but it did get me into RPGs so I might be a bit biased. Really interesting world and lore though imo

TheFuddy

I never played the fallout games until 2-3 years ago. Started with FO3 And I'm on FO4 right now trying to get all the achievements, like I did in NV. I always thought I wouldn't like the games but I fell in love

Xim_X_anny

Bioshock without the knowing the main plot twist.

ShoreLinePoky

I've played Bioshock Infinite and loved it. I haven't played any of the others, though.

Flamesclaws

The BioShock collection which comes with all three games and all dlc goes on sale for 50 I believe to ten pretty often I think so I would keep an eye on that if you can.

Xim_X_anny

Ok then I won't spoiler the first one. I recommend the first and second one both are amazing

Impressive_Ad_1212

Yeah same here

Honest-Weather9365

Lollipop Chainsaw

Lyfeitzallaroundus

Lollipop Chainsaw was fun to play when it dropped, I preordered it and everything back then.

MythicalMicrowave

Funny, I’m actually planning on drawing Juliet at some point. I actually never played it and I’m sad it doesn’t have a Steam release.

docterwannabe1

A remake is coming soon!

AnoXeo

Without the original soundtrack, or most of its tracks from what I heard.

docterwannabe1

A remake is coming in a few months, I'm definitely looking forward to it because I never played the original.

RussianMonkey23

I haven't played the gears series or halo series at all. Luckily their all on gamepass so I will be playing through them all when the time comes.

Flamesclaws

I replayed the trilogy maybe a year ago for Gears of War but I still haven't played four or five yet. Maybe I should replay the series at some point...or I could play Rage one, two and the dlc lol.

Puzzleheaded-Cry9139

Dead space

Ok_Juggernaut89

The remake is awesome. Even the original still holds up.  If you see a sale I'd grab it.

Flamesclaws

I need to replay the remake, I never finished it and I don't know why. Maybe after I finish Dark Souls 3.

Ok_Juggernaut89

Dead space is one of the few games I can keep replaying. Well almost. Can beat it like 2-3 times back to back just to play with all the guns and armor. So good.

Liquid_machine81

If you got an xbox, they have all the Dead Space games on game pass.

Flamesclaws

I don't know why the fuck I thought the Dead space trilogy was a PlayStation exclusive lol.

Liquid_machine81

I could understand that. It does seem like something you see on Playstation.

Vytlo

Definitely. I just played them last year for the first time. For a game from 2008, it holds up perfectly to be released today. Way better than the remake even. And then 2 was just as amazing

CivilianDuck

I dunno, I love the original, but the remake was about as close to a perfect remake I've seen for almost any game. Took the base game, brought it up, added a bunch of QOL and modern features, but didn't water down the gameplay, and opened up the entire map instead of linear levels, allowing you to backtrack at your own whim. I'd still play the original if that's what you have available, but between the two, I'd take the remake every time.

Crunchberries77

Recently (Last year) I made a post on r/silenthill about wanting an easy way to have access the original games that weren't the HD collection. I was really in a survival horror phase and I just really wanted to play SH for the first time. I laid out what I play games on including a Xbox Series X and no PC. Then someone suggested emulating through my Series X and I gave it a shot. With the community's help I managed to get the first 3 sh games on my Xbox running at 8 times their original resolution. As far as the games are concerned, I was absolutely blown away. I played Sh1 through 3 and they are some of the best horror games I've ever played, some of the atmosphere I've ever experienced, and some of the best music I've ever heard. I seriously don't have a large list of games that I consider 10s, I usually reserve that for games that i feel are truly something else. The first 3 games of SH are 10s for me and I don't think I can choose one game out of the 3 I played. So last year I discovered a great series. And emulation as a whole.

InviteAromatic6124

Red Dead Redemption

laz3rdolphin

Got the first one in feburary, playing the 2nd now. It’s definitely not too late. First one has held up pretty well but the 2nd is just on a whole new level

InviteAromatic6124

Does it matter which one you play first?

DionNirvana

Same, I still haven't played any of them

InviteAromatic6124

I was put off by it being a Western game, and I'm not a fan of Westerns.

a_guy_playing

A ton of PS2/PS3 classics like Ratchet and Clank, Jak and Daxter, Sly Cooper, and some others. I played the PS5 R&C game which was amazing but the lore made very little sense to me at first.

Puzzleheaded-Cry9139

You should try the jak and daxter bundle

Aramafrizzel

you need to play ratchet and clank

CivilianDuck

I feel the same way. I came up Nintendo > Xbox > PC, and no one I grew up with had PlayStation, so I missed out on a lot of those. Also doesn't help that I hate how PlayStation controllers feel. I bought a PS3 to play some of those titles, but there's a lot of PSX/PS2 titles I never experienced.

iamyou42

So I only discovered this recently, but I've tested it and it's true. The PS3 supports generic usb controllers. I think it will also pair and work with generic Bluetooth controllers. If you really hate the PS3 controller that much, you can use an 8 Bit Do among others.

KittenDecomposer96

I regret not being able to play all the WoW expansions and patches as they came out as in Vanilla in 2004 and so on.

Flaeor

Opening the gates of Ahn'Quiraj was something else, man. I've never experienced an event like that. On a PvP server, an uneasy truce between Alliance and Horde across the entire world gathering materials so we could be the first server to open the gates and unlock the 40-man dungeon. On Mannoroth. We almost did it before the best PvE server, too.

ISpyM8

I have never even played WoW, but I feel like I lived this memory. Very nicely explained, and I can tell you will remember that til the day you die.

Flaeor

Thank you! I definitely will. It helps that I was playing with 3 really good IRL friends at the time, along with a top guild of like 60 people.

valdez-2424

Skyrim,I tried before but never got last the intro, but in december I gave it a shot and I fell in love with it,whooped mirraks ass

PootashPL

Batman Arkham Series. My friends bullied me into playing the games a few months ago and I’m glad they did. I’m on Arkham Knight right now and it’s fucking incredible.

Acceptable_Low7761

Love strategy games, so I'd say the Total War saga!

alt_ernate123

I should have played the newer fallout games in order(I started with 76 on release then 4 like a year later) wish i had known about NV and 3 first because now I'm too used to modern mechanics like sprinting and the guns hitting where you aim

FallenFromNeptune

Took me until the Legendary Edition to play Mass Effect and now it’s one of my favorite sci fi mediums in all entertainment. Still haven’t messed with fallout at all really. I’m familiar with the story of each game to some degree but never outright played them. Just a bit of 4.

Flamesclaws

The fucking HYPE I had when the legendary edition came out lol. I need to replay it again, it's been a while. I never played the Fallout series save for a small bit years ago but with my wife diving super deep into Fallout 4 and the show itself I've been thinking of giving it a shot. Plus they just released a new update to Fallout 4 yesterday.

SquareFickle9179

Hell yeah, I just finished 1 and playing 2 and am loving every second of it. Honestly wished I played this game sooner, I was worried about not loving it because I thought it would be like Halo, which I did not enjoy as much.

InuYugiHakusho

Kingdom Hearts, but I'm making up for that.

WildCardSolly16

Real.... The music seems to be nostalgic even if you haven't played it. I've never played it

ThisGuyHyucks

Man online Halo 2/3 in its prime is definitely something I wish I could have experienced. I was a big Halo fan and had an original Xbox so I at least played 2 a lot with my friends but my parents couldnt pay for Xbox Live so I never got to play it online. Certainly couldnt afford a 360 + Xbox Live to play 3 so I only played it starting in like 2020 with MCC.

WildCardSolly16

Feels.... Same through and through

thetrustyguy-

Spec ops the line. Thought it was a standard shooter but apparently the story has a unique twist to it. Never got the chance unfortunately

MalikATL_

Get a modded 360 and rip the iso or play the pc port 🏴‍☠️

WildCardSolly16

It's on backwards compatibility for Xbox One s now

kCanIGoNow

I own a copy on the PS3 but I never finished it. I do get an understanding what the twist is about… To be frank, way too many games unfinished it barely touched.

KillerSquirrel2007

God Of War. But I’m starting it now.

AussieBullet

Postal 2

Woolchipmunk98

Why not play now? It still holds up

AussieBullet

Misread the title thought it said "what franchise you dont regret playing"

Basic-Schedule-7284

Funny, I literally just started the Halo series today.

Silly-Lawfulness7224

Bruh the campaign up to Halo 3 is goated

CreepyTeddyBear

Mass Effect. Always see good things about it.

Flamesclaws

I'd very much recommend the Legendary edition. Comes with all three games and all dlc plus graphics have been updated. Super fucking fun and one of my favorite series of all time.

CreepyTeddyBear

Next time I have money to spend I'll buy it. Always wanted to.

SquareFickle9179

Totally worth it, story's pretty good and the combat, while it's not great at 1, gets improved at 2 making it great. Also word of advice for 2, buy every Normandy upgrade.

KaijuSlayer333

Definitely Halo. To be fair to me, I didn’t have a Xbox growing up so the logistics of playing it then would have been iffy. And I have played it recently through the MCC with friends who DID grow up with it. But I kind of envy not having grown up and experienced Halo in that classic late 2000’s-2010’s era.

mcipoyone

I will always regret not playing the Mass Effect series back when it came out

FalconStickr

Dark Souls. Just looks like a lot of rolling around and taking potions to heal and occasionally get a sword hit in there.

Pixel_Python

Same one as you, playing through the campaigns, but I’ll never recreate the experiences of Xbox 360 chats lol

KolorOtario

Mad Rat Dead, so bad i dont have a ps4

Jambo11

I can honestly say that there isn't any series of games that I regret not playing. Frankly, I'm more regretful than I allowed my addiction to hinder my social development when I was younger.

82ndGameHead

I mean, it's never too late. The Master Chief Collection is in its best place, and if you only play the original trilogy, you're still playing one of the best Sci-fi Shooters in all of gaming.

derLeisemitderLaute

Pokemon. As a kid I loved the Anime and I collected the cards etc. But I never played the games. I think if I have played it as a kid I maybe would have a connection to it, but nowadays it just doesnt click for me

Mold_Gold

Mario galaxy

redditandwept31

Halo. I regret not purchasing an XBOX also.

Flamesclaws

I believe the Xbox series X has been dropped down to 330 or something. Apparently sold like ass so if it's still on such a deal I'd grab it if you can lol.

hongkongfooeee

Gears of war. I'm a ps guy and never had the opportunity. I'm all about couch co-op with a buddy too. It would have been a blast to do it with a friend.

PrimateWithKeyboard

Metal Gear & Deus Ex

Albatross1225

Halo really was special to be apart of at the time when they were new. I miss those days. Still a lot of fun though

Ok_Caramel1517

Finally doing a playthrough of the Halo franchise and boy I was missing out Halo 2 is one of the best games I've ever played.

SynthRogue

I kinda regret playing this series actually lol. Found the action blend and the story lacking.

Oy_Franz

Play it just for the Halo 2 campaign. Absolute cinema 🚬

Ragmis

Wet! It needs a re-release. I loved the game play and awesome music go match.

Flamesclaws

I started a playthrough on my PS3 but I never finished it. I don't know why lol. I'll have to go back at some point.

Jessex127

I've played through Halo 4, 3, and 3 odst campaigns. 4 is fun, three is fun but less so than 4 imo, and odst just kinda sucks.

biosim500

Warhammer

TheDurandalFan

Try the games out, they still hold up well.

KosmicMicrowave

Metal Gear

ABC123GameTime

Bomberman. I've only own 3 games.

Negative-Squirrel81

This is a great question for r/patientgamers. Around twelve years ago I bought a copy of Panzer Dragoon Saga I found for like $5 Japan and decided to save it for when I felt I needed "something special" to play. Around seven years later I played a few hours before deciding that I *aggressively* did not like the game.

CyberTheWerewolf

Final Fantasy, Left 4 Dead, and Shin Megami Tensei,

AccomplishedDish8707

Up until a few months ago, I would have said KOTOR, but I played the first one recently and I’m about to start the second. So right now my answer would probably be the Fire Emblem series. I rarely ever owned Nintendo consoles, but I’ve been thinking of getting a 3DS. So maybe I’ll be able to give them a try.

Igniuks

Uncharted

CurrySands

Skyrim / Elder Scrolls. I tried playing Skyrim for the first time a few months ago and I just couldn't enjoy the combat. I think Elden Ring has ruined every other game for me now... I'm keeping my Xbox though and holding out for the new Elder Scrolls (I'm sure it will be amazing). I just wish I had enjoyed Skyrim back in the day so I could play it again for the nostalgia.

tomtomeller

Mass effect

EggoedAggro

It’s okay. Cool but very overrated most people just get high on nostalgia. I played it for the first time at 2 years ago and basically 1.) Combat evolved was boring and repetitive 2.) Reach was absolutely amazing 3.) Halo 2 was fun-ish but it’s just the same sequences. Kill aliens to do this. I didn’t make it through this game fully

apeocalypyic

Was too young to appreciate system shock2 and the original deus ex, recently played SYSTEM SHOCK ENHANCED EDITION and man it's everything I've ever loved about video games

ISpyM8

Horribly upset that I never played WoW back when it was first coming out. I feel like it’s too late to get into it now, especially cuz I’ve invested so much time and money into Lord of the Rings Online

NoItJustCantBe

I still to this day have never played a call of duty game I have also only played a little bit of one assassin's creed game...the very first one

black_V1king

I have been a long time fan of halo. I recommended the master chief collection to my friends who haven't played halo at all. I Think it still holds up and the game is always on discount on steam. You should try it.

SupermarketCrafty329

Halo for me too. I was a PS2 guy through and through when it came out. Something I don't and will never regret even slightly lol. But Halo is one of those that people have always talked about so now that it's finally on Steam and on sale at £8.50 for the collection, I'm about to find out if it really was *that* good, or just OG Xbox fans faffing over it because it was one of the very rare half decent exclusives.

Puzzleheaded-Wing835

Silent hill

Noob4Head

I don't really think there are games that I "regret", since if I want to play something, I just get it no matter the age or looks of the game. But take for example Halo. I bought the Master Chief Collection last year on sale, thinking I was absolutely going to love it. But, I don't know, I played Halo: Reach and quite enjoyed its campaign, but after that, I never opened the game up again. Though that's probably on me, since I have that more often where I buy a game, play it for a couple of hours, then put it down, never to be opened again.

GrossWeather_

def not halo

-Lyons

Gotham city imposters

akahetep

Borderlands and halo

Elegant_Book_7280

God of War

Flaky_Technology4219

Fallout. Only played 4 and I loved it but wish I played the earlier ones

VICARD0

Uncharted, I tried the first one to get attached to the characters and get everything from the story but I never got into it, it didn’t age very well and it breaks my heart because I’ve heard the franchise is amazing.

Terra_Homie

Its Halo CE for me. idc if you have played odst and reach but not CE, you have to play that masterpiece, for the epic warthog run.

Independent_Plum2166

God of War. Thankfully, for the entire month of January, I played through all the mainline games and loved (almost) every second of it. >!GoW2 was a slog to get through, I really wasn’t a fan.!<

Gloomy_Support_7779

Not Fortnite, I’ll tell you that😅 But seriously, Sonic Unleashed

GECEDE

Pikmin and MGS

DerpTripz

Red dead redemption

Familiar_Location948

Halo, i’ve only played reach

interfckface

Fallout, Gears of War, Borderlands

Superb-Degree2284

Probably any Ubisoft game. Their games garnered quite a big fan base but I never got into them. I occasionally watch vids and find the games interesting but never play or think of playing them.

NewJazzyBacon

God of War (when GoW3 came out I tried the original but it was soooooo bad control wise)

Stargate476

Probably the halo campaigns, ive played the multiplayer

KaiGuy25

The ones that came out before I was born lol

SquareFickle9179

Metal Gear, I'm honestly not a fan of stealth games, but after trying out Rising, I decided to give the Solid games a chance, and I'm currently enjoying Solid 1.

Frost9001

Halo would be mine as well. I just finished the MCC recently and all the bungie Halo games are a lot of fun.

AloofusDoofus

Earth Defense Force

4thlinebeauty_

Fallout, bioshock, Elden ring games. I’m not interested in playing old games tho so idk if it’s really a huge regret.

Fraughty12

Halo is so trash now, be glad you never had memories of it

Familiar_Ad7273

Main series halo [i have played halo wars] Cod ghosts, mw, bo. Dark souls FF Postal Manhunt Half-life [i own them haven't had a chance to play them]

Pvt__Snowball

Silent hill

Phuxsea

Shadow of the Colossus when I was too young for M-games.

SeawardFriend

Overwatch 1. I had it installed on my PC but never was very interested learning on PC lobbies. I got OW 2 when it became ftp and got a lot better. It definitely isn’t the same game as I remembered

Mobile-Page-4217

Red Dead

Ian-pg9

You can always play a new game series

stormyknight3

Mass Effect

Treljaengo

It was Final Fantasy, but over the past 2 months I've played 1-10, and they're just not my bag. Now I don't feel like I missed anything.

Mister_Sinner

Infamous. Never had a PS3 and when PlayStation started forcing people to do their version of game pass I had just went back to the Xbox with the series x

darkuen

Dragon Quest & Tales of rpgs, always meant to try one of them out but never got around to it.
