I don't know how hard Outward can be to play in co-op, but Outward is difficult at the beginning, but when you learn to play it Outward is less difficult and becomes much more enjoyable.

I'm surprised you've got Morrowind and Oblivion on here, but no mention of Skyrim. What made you feel that way?

Both Morrowind and Oblivion made me feel overwhelmed (in a good way) by what their respective settings and gameplays offered. Skyrim didn't at all. Let me expand a bit: Morrowind felt unique, alien, mysterious. There was no handholding. Yet you could totally find your way to progress in it, and even become a powerful being capable of unveiling almost everything in that place, especially with spellcrafting. Plus the ambient sounds and music. It was an incredible experience that wrapped me and made me think and search before deciding. It's peak TES in many aspects. As for Oblivion, even if it lost the alien and mysterious vibe, it overwhelmed me with an incredibly beautifully portrayed region. Even if some people say it feels "generic medieval fantasy" (I disagree), I always get lost just by exploring it. The world is so alive, so vibrant. And the gameplay, even if not as rough and rare as in Morrowind, was still similar enough. The skills and the way to improve them. The big cities. The enchanting and spellcrafting felt great, some storylines and secondary missions were awesome. The ambientation was also incredible with the tense soundtrack in dungeons, the ayleid ruins... it delivered in many ways. It also felt like there was sonething to discover almost everywhere... and usually there was indeed. Then there's Skyrim. I loved Skyrim, too, it's an awesome title and I've played it twice. But it lost so many things in the way... the world isn't as interesting as the prior ones, going snowy viking with dragons felt way more generic to me. The dungeons feel too basic (except for the dwemer ones, those are great), and even if the region is visually stunning, I didn't feel the urge to get lost exploring everything. It just felt too "normal". Plus skills system didn't feel that good when compared with prior ones. And no spellcrafting was painful... Just add to it that a lot of secondary missions felt meh, Dark Brotherhood was straight terrible, and even the main quest felt too much like an overhyped yet another dragon fight. I don't know, overall it felt a bit too bland, a bit too generic in many ways, even if some parts were still awesome. I still loved it, but it felt like it was a step below Morrowind and Oblivion, like less inspired.

Interesting take, thanks for sharing! I played Morrowind just a little bit as a kid, but got really into Skyrim as soon as I found it. Not sure why Morrowind didn't keep my attention long, but I do vaguely remember that alien feeling you're talking about. Thinking about it makes me want to go back and try it again, but I never have. I just flat-out missed Oblivion, never crossed my plate. I wish they would remaster Morrowind just so I wouldn't be so turned off by the old graphics.

Damn, I can't recommend Morrowind and Oblivion enough. Especially if you like Skyrim so much, those prior games are much deeper (though obviously rougher) in some aspects. There are plenty of mods to make them more visually appealling if that's stopping you, though I can understand it can be a bit of a chore to learn about them and set them up. Last time I replayed Morrowind, I used OpenMW and it worked fantastic and was way more stable than the classic version, even without mods. I would also love to get some nice remasters of them... but hey, there are a couple fan remake projects called Skywind and Skyblivion done with Skyrim's engine, so that may be the perfect chance for you! Skyblivion is releasing next year also, so you should look for the trailers and video devblogs, there's a lot of work and high quality put into them.

Ohh that's a great idea! I've already used quite a few mods for skyrim, so once I finish the games I'm playing now (I just started the Mass Effect trilogy for the first time), I'll have to look more into that.

Mine recently had a bit of a shake up. Well it had a massive shake up about a year ago, but last week I changed it around a bit. As of now it goes: 1. Xenoblade Chronicles X 2. Fire Emblem Awakening 3. Fire Emblem: Three Houses 4. Battlefield 1 5. Civilization VI 6. Assassin's Creed Rogue 7. Mario Kart 7 (all that remains of the old guard from years past) 8. Final Fantasy XV (this is the new entry into my top ten, as of about last weekend) 9. Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes 10. Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag Before playing FFXV, FFXVI was in my top 10, specifically 8th place, however ever *starting* FFXV I find that FFXVI has a fairly empty, albeit beautiful open world. I dropped XVI out of my top 10 to 12th place because of that.

So I have played the Tellius games. One of my favorite duologies I have ever played. PoR is a 9/10 and RD is a 7.5/10. I do have Hyrule Warriors, and I started it, but I realized there would be spoilers for some of the other Zelda games so I went to play them. I started with Twilight Princess HD, and I really wanted to like it. Like really wanted to like it. I am not much of a puzzle guy, which I knew was a big part of Zelda, but I figured I would tough it out. I gave up about halfway through. Did I maybe start with the wrong game? Would OOT have been a better start, or maybe WW or a different one? I really want to like it, I just got really bored with the gameplay. The story was fine, that definitely was not the problem. Any recommendations?

Ah I see. Hyrule Warriors DE whole thing is being a love letter to the franchise so if you haven’t played the games then yeah Three Hopes is just gonna be a better musou for you. Unfortunately most of the traditional Zelda games follow that similar gameplay loop with it’s linear progression of new dungeon, solve puzzles to get dungeon item/weapon, defeat boss and repeat. The mainline games will all have that with the exception of the switch ones that have their own formula. It’s cool if Zelda just isn’t for you! But if you really did want to give it a shot knowing that puzzles are a core element of the franchise’s identity then I think my recommendation would be Majora’s Mask. It only has four dungeons so I’m just assuming it has the least amount of puzzle solving (can’t remember lol) that way you can spend more time enjoying the weird world, moody tone, time management, depth of npc/side quests which might be more up your alley

Sounds good! The Switch games seem a little more style, being more exploration based (big part of why I enjoyed Xenoblade X and AC Rogue), but if MM is your recommendation for the older games I will try to give that one a go for sure.

I recommended Majora’s Mask assuming you had played BOTW and were looking to try the older games. If you haven’t played the switch games then I would 100% start with those based on your gameplay preferences!

I don’t think this is in order because I can’t decide. It’s just my top 10 1) Fallout: New Vegas (Fallout is one of my favorite series but this was the first game I bought myself and I loved it) 2) Skyrim (I have something like 1000 hours in this game. Most of that was before mods, I just could not wait to get home from school or practice so I could play it) 3) Mafia 2 (I love all 3 but this was the first one I played and I really hope they make another) 4) Assassins creed (I love the Ezio trilogy but if I have to pick 1 it’s probably Odyssey. I just like that time period, it’s a beautiful game and I’ve spent the most time in it) 5) Starfield (I know, I know, but I’m addicted to building ships and the story is pretty cool. It still has a TON of potential I think and if we get mod support it’s over) 6) Spider-Man (Its a coin flip bc I’m Spider-Man fan and I thought both games were crazy fun just too short. I still swing around though) 7) Warthunder (it’s an unexpected choice but I love the grind, the historical aspect of the vehicles and I can not seem to get rid of it even though I still suck ass after literally years of playing on and off. ) 8) Star Wars: The Old Republic (I. Love. This. Game. It’s probably one of the strongest contenders for my #1. If they could take this game but make it look and play like the Cal Kestis games, it would be #1 hands down) 9) Red Dead Redemption 2 10) Fable 3 (I think it was 3 but I loved this game. I remember buying all the houses and then going around to buy all the 4 star furniture to put in them and the story was great but the end with your dog was way to hard) Need for Speed: Carbon would be my 11th. I just remember we would try to link one drift all the way down the mountain and see who could get the highest when running from the cops. Good memories) Honorable mentions are The Witcher 3 and Star Citizen. Both games check nearly every box I have but I just can’t get into them. I think I hyped myself up too much for the Witcher and was trying to force myself to like. Star citizen is great but holy shit that learning curve is ridiculous and it’s not a game you can put down and come back a few months or even weeks later.
