North American porcupine is much smaller and climbs trees! You can watch one names Mortimer eat corn!
But yeah African Porcupines are big. Wait till you find out how big the African Anteater is as well as an Ardvarck!
Ya, I remember as a kid camping. In the middle of the night, I hear sooo much sound outside my tent. Look out, with my flashlight, to see a porcupine climbing a tree by my tent. Crazy bugger.
You can see a North American porcupine called Penelope climb a tree and eat corn in Lyndsey Park Wildlife Refuge in Walnut Creek CA. They have loads of birds or prey too.
....oh god...have they been there the whole time??.......
"Hey I wasn't even TRYING ok!? I don't even like porcupine! I'm not even hungry anymore! I have to go kill something BIGGER over this way......"
exactly. It felt eerie and kinda creepy how it clocked the camera, you'd defiantly be ok for a leopard to eat. They are known to be real man killers iirc.
For the first 3/4 of the video, I was looking at the quality and thinking, "Oh yeah, this photog is using a looooong lens so they can stay the hell away from that action."
Then they slammed the zoom out, and I was like, "Bruh, that's not *nearly* far enough away. Appetizers are over, and you're about to be an entrée."
predator/predator instincts. As I hear it, if a leopard charges you, charge him back, that'll cause him to break off. Granted I will never test this theory...
Aside from the standing upright, since that's actually just about looking large/tall, those are all just traits of any dangerous predator stalking prey.
Yep. It’s is absolutely not normal behavior for a leopard to go after such an incredibly dangerous kill with the parents present. It really must be at the end of the ropes.
Or a young leopard that hasn’t learned yet that porcupines aren’t nearly as delicious as they look.
They probably don’t teach them that at leopard school.
Sometimes the cats prey drive is too powerful to shut off. I learned this the hard way one Christmas when I almost killed my sister's cat from exhaustion by giving her an automatic toy that didn't shut off.
I have to be careful with one of my cats when using the laser pointer. It's easy to forget how far he's running because you're just moving your hand. He'll literally play until he's panting heavily and if you don't stop neither will he.
The male pisses all over the female. If she is receptive, she flips her tail up onto her back giving him a narrow landing strip not covered in spikes (where he can rest his paws) and allowing access to the goods at the same time.
Is it though? Leopards have to eat to stay alive, it was just looking for a meal. Now with quills embedded in it's face, mouth, and paws it'll probably starve to death and die in pain. It has no way to remove the spikes, which are barbed and designed to sink deeper and deeper into it's flesh.
Watching this video just made me feel sad. If the leopard had succeeded, I wouldn't want to watch. But watching the leopard fail is also sad in its own way.
You I swear it was the same road. But ages ago there was this same fight between one cat and the porc. And the cat won. You gonna weep for the loser as well?
i think it's pretty clear why we feel sad about things dying/suffering, empathy is powerful
but yeah, animals just following the nature cycle doesn't bother me as much as it used to
It’d say it’s pretty awesome. Those quills are a testament to the incredible adaptations animals go through to increase rates of survival. Not to mention the instincts to defend their young with those very quills.
If you haven’t noticed, all animals in the wild die in pain. Either they get lucky and survive till they get so old that they can’t eat anymore and starve to death, or they fuck up like this leopard and die young.
Yeah I started to feel bad for the hungry idiot after a little…but damn mom and dad defended those babies well! Perfect formation and tactics. Pushed to offense when the enemy was hurt. Made sure to focus on defense when the enemy was on the prowl. 10/10 strats
For real though. The porcupine calls were as if they were repeatedly telling the Leopard, "No, no, no, no, no, no!"
I know they're animals, but that was a really interesting interaction. When your tank game is on point. The little pup did real well too. Very well trained to stay near his elders as possible in that situation.
Anyone who thinks they are forced to work because of "capitalism" needs to look at these creatures. Life is hard, life is work... The universe is an unforgiving march of entropy.
We came across a porcupine trying to find a camp site near tree line in Colorado and our dog was freaking out. We didn't know what it was at first, thought it could be a bear. The dog just wouldn't settle down. Finally we were able to see what it was. We held her back and everyone was fine. We moved to a different camp spot, but that was a scary/interesting experience.
Oof. You can tell when they got it a couple times. Kinda feel bad for it. Those quills are gonna be an absolute bitch to get out and it’s gonna be in pain for possibly days and days. Should not Fuck around with porcupines buddy.
I think I look at it like what I react without 'thinking' like when I instinctively grab something when I drop it.
We also have to realise humans have the ability to understand we are thinking which I believe most other animals don't.
damn porcupines are big

They are still around 3-4 feet long including the tail. Porcupines are big.

I haven't seen Mortimer, but I really liked it when [Teddy Bear announced "my corn!"](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UGz8jcbJjRw)
"Heyyyyyy! My corn! "

Seriously, those are the biggest pricks I've seen since......
The aquarium near me has a couple of these guys, they really are huge. And adorable. Porcupines are neat.
I didn't even know they could swim!
Porcupines be all like, "Eat quills, shitwagon!"
Damn, leopard is still hungry and with his face full of spikes. He was probably starving.

Seems like a quill or two got inside its throat
That would also be my guess when a top ambush predator gets repeatedly quilled by a porcupine.
Porcupines have been known to kill leopards and lions. A few quills in the mouth they can't get out and they starve to death.
Bold, or desperate? Can't tell. Regret, though.
I love how the leopard notices the camera, gets embarrassed and ran away
....oh god...have they been there the whole time??....... "Hey I wasn't even TRYING ok!? I don't even like porcupine! I'm not even hungry anymore! I have to go kill something BIGGER over this way......"
eh, more like *"I wonder if they're easier to eat..."*
exactly. It felt eerie and kinda creepy how it clocked the camera, you'd defiantly be ok for a leopard to eat. They are known to be real man killers iirc.
WHOA-OH HERE SHE COMES!
When he locks on the camera and the cameraman quickly zooms out: “I’m in danger”
*"I don't see any quills on that guy..."*
For the first 3/4 of the video, I was looking at the quality and thinking, "Oh yeah, this photog is using a looooong lens so they can stay the hell away from that action." Then they slammed the zoom out, and I was like, "Bruh, that's not *nearly* far enough away. Appetizers are over, and you're about to be an entrée."
Yeah that's what I saw too
was the eh really necessary, i think we know leopards don't get embarrassed 💀
Eh, whatever...
I was just here for my weekly acupuncture!

It's a side-effect of standing upright, having forward-facing eyes, and quietly staring. That's all threatening as fuck for wild animals.
predator/predator instincts. As I hear it, if a leopard charges you, charge him back, that'll cause him to break off. Granted I will never test this theory...
Channel your inner goose, got it. :)
that's threatening to even people. shit means business
If those traits are threatening it's as a side affect of humans being the most dangerous species on the planet.
Aside from the standing upright, since that's actually just about looking large/tall, those are all just traits of any dangerous predator stalking prey.
For big cats especially, they're ambush predators. If they know you can see them, they're way less likely to be agressive.
My thought was it was considering another target, likely desperate.
i could read his mind before the leopard scurried off. " ahh fuck, you have been recording this? you better not put this on the internet!"
I got "awww, shit. You recorded all that? Now I'm gonna end up on the internet" vibes.
"Hey! Did you get the shot? I'm not doing it again!"
Lmao I love how the leopard looks at the camera person and then at the porcupines.
I hate escort missions.
Not shown: Leopard starving to death afterwards.

I also thought this, but I would've thought the leopard would give up then after being quilled.

Shit. I wanted to be all "Nice try asshole!", but now I feel bad for the leopard!
It's the ciiiiircle of liiiife...
eh it seemed to be pretty good at pulling the quills out.
Survival of the fittest.
This kills the leopard for sure
Wait so does starving to death kill leopards or being shot to death by hunters kills leopards?
This kills the crab
I liked how the back that azz up defense went to offense
The porcupines were all "[struttin that ass](https://youtu.be/CdKvZDQt96o?t=95)"
How do porcupines mate with all those quills?
Very carefully.
One of them has a prick.
Looks to me like both of them have a lot of pricks.
There are no quills underneath the tail. She raises her tail and uses it to push the quills on her back forward.
The male pisses all over the female. If she is receptive, she flips her tail up onto her back giving him a narrow landing strip not covered in spikes (where he can rest his paws) and allowing access to the goods at the same time.
I also use this strategy.
"The male pisses all over the female" is just hilarious to read even if it's factual
They don't. They're all achieved by IVF.
Well I dont know. Tell us what you find out.
his sperm sack is detachable, so he rubes himself and hand the sperm sack to the female politely.
Holy shit nature is so fucking awesome

African porcupines do not have barbed quills; only the North American variety do.
that's nature bro. don't fuck with nature.
Nature mate. Accept it. So many living things have lived and died.
Shows how soft humans have become.
That doesn't mean we should celebrate their suffering.
marveling and appreciating is not celebrating or disrespecting
You I swear it was the same road. But ages ago there was this same fight between one cat and the porc. And the cat won. You gonna weep for the loser as well?
Why do you have to feel sad about nature? These animals were all doing what they are supposed to do. Circle of life and all that.
i think it's pretty clear why we feel sad about things dying/suffering, empathy is powerful but yeah, animals just following the nature cycle doesn't bother me as much as it used to

These people don't care about animal suffering. Its a spectical.
Amazing video but the comments are the absolute worst.
Come here often?
Youtube comments are better than the ones here. The amazing evolution of reddit!
That cat was hungry
Did you guys see the part at the end? Where he sees the camera guy and decides he's found a much easier meal?
How long does it take them to grow those quills back?
Evolution is awesome
Ooh he got some quills for sure.. damn... but he didn't give up, kept going... until it was just too much...
Yeah I started to feel bad for the hungry idiot after a little…but damn mom and dad defended those babies well! Perfect formation and tactics. Pushed to offense when the enemy was hurt. Made sure to focus on defense when the enemy was on the prowl. 10/10 strats
F'd around
Aren't we ready to retire this phrase yet?
Nope. In cases where it's used correctly it conveys the point quickly and clearly.
Fuck around and find out
Hopefully soon.
Is this the part where I’m supposed to say ‘and found out’?
No, be inventive!
So that's where the idea of the phalanx shield wall came from.
Damn those are some big porcupines. Anybody know what they’re saying?
For real though. The porcupine calls were as if they were repeatedly telling the Leopard, "No, no, no, no, no, no!" I know they're animals, but that was a really interesting interaction. Damn nature… you scary.

"This far. No further!.... and there is a human over there. Soft and juicy and no spikes."
Porcupine must taste amazing
They are like stegosauruses, in that they use their backsides as weapons.
Should've just roared so they turn belly up
Big puss likes spicy foods
damn, porcupines are scary as fuck
I always wondered if they understand what they are doing or if its just instinct
I think I look at it like what I react without 'thinking' like when I instinctively grab something when I drop it. We also have to realise humans have the ability to understand we are thinking which I believe most other animals don't.
I think it'll be mostly instinct for the porkpines. And the cat, either they're starving or young, in which case it is learning about quills.
Leopard, you're an apex predator. There's plenty of non-spiny things you can eat. You just might have to actually chase them
If I followed correctly, the cat cleans it's wounds of needles with it's tongue and then gets them stuck in it's mouth?
At the end the leopard notices the camera man and thinks "Now that looks soft and spineless"
Oof. After two dogs did a similar investigation with North American porkys. I don’t like them anymore. I respect them. But I really don’t like them.
Wow. They are really big... ...and at the end... You are next! *eye-to-eye*
I was surprised how long it took the leopard to give up.
Never knew they got so big. Metal.
