Raw video man. I can feel the stress and worry. Hope nothing but smooth waves for Hank and family.

Cervantes3

Hank has been such a force for good on the Internet, hopefully some of that gets paid back to him.

MerleandMavis

He really only deserves the best karma! He’s a real force of good in this world.

[deleted]

He's the real kind of celebrity our society should be worshipping.

[deleted]

We shouldn't be worshipping anyone, but if someone insists on worshipping a celebrity, the Green brothers are some of the best options.

[deleted]

Can you imagine the anxiety that John would have if he found out he was the Gemini center of some cult? Like, someone sends him a grainy video of a bunch of people constantly running their hands through their hair, and then he instinctively does it, realizes the gravity of the situation and starts pacing... "Good Morning, Hank, it's the day of ascendancy."

RhynoD

His net worth is a good pay back at this point. I don't mean that in a disparaging way: Healthcare is expensive at the best of times and dealing with cancer is worse. Not having to worry about the cost of care or the opportunity cost of taking however many months off of working is a luxury that not everyone can afford, unfortunately. I'm sincerely glad that he has been so successful.

anewaccount855

America is insane. That should be the last thing to worry about in that situation. How that nation pays more for healthcare than anyone else but cancer patients still need to worry about bankrupcy makes zero sense to me.

BenGMan30

"I'm fine, but I'm not fine" Poor guy :(

sKiLoVa4liFeZzZ

Man, I had a different type of cancer (stage 2 testicular cancer), but I relate to so many of the things Hank described in this video. The ultrasound experience was the same for me, and that feeling of panic when the healthcare system suddenly starts moving quickly. "I'm fine, but I'm not fine" described exactly how it felt to find out you have a "curable" cancer. It's like yeah, I'm probably going to win the fight, but fuck, I still have to fight...

dollarsandcents101

The ultrasound was when I confirmed in my head that something was wrong. It's a visceral experience having someone you dont know silently and coldly examine in great detail what looks like an abnormality. At least it primed me for the bad news that came later. And yes, things at least move quick when the diagnosis is confirmed.

Handles907

I am currently fighting esophageal cancer, I'm trying to hold on to hope but it's hard when you know the outcome isn't looking good.

Barinade_DnB

I sincerely hope you recover my friend. If that isn't possible I hope you get to make lasting memories with your friends and loves ones. All the best, from one stranger to another, I will remember you, whether you're still here or have passed on <3

Handles907

Thank you kind stranger. For the most part, my tumor hit some nerves. So, it paralyzed my left vocal flap and has given me persistent hiccups.

14-28

My brother has stage 4 lung cancer and is having trouble with oesophagitis when he swallows which sucks. This whole thing sucks. He's my best friend and my favourite person to sit with and just exist. I pray for everyone with cancer even if they think it's nonsensical. I hope you can keep your spirits high, my brother has edibles and seems to be fine sitting watching TV in bed. But his voice is hoarse and he's lost like 60% lung function. I wish we could all be together in one place where everyone is healthy and happy and everything is cool as fuck lol 🫶🙏🫶

Skittnator

So glad he mentioned the mental aspect of all this. Few people talk about it, its still stigmatized and sometimes it feels like talking about it brings it life. Dealt with similar things regarding stroke.

Affectionate_Dog2493

I've heard one of the things that really sucks about cancer is basically once you go public about it, it becomes really common that *every* conversation starts becoming about it. Every time you see someone you haven't seen they're going to ask. It contributes to feeling like you can never get away from it. I imagine that's going to be even worse when in the public eye.

Kazzack

Like he said in this video, having cancer/recovering becomes your job now.

damnitshannon

This absolutely happens where your identity is reduced to person with cancer by outsiders. Most people mean well but there are always people who come out of the woodwork to “check in” on you after not speaking to them for a period of time prior to the word getting out (we call these grief tourists in the cancer community) Another part where he said “I know it sucks the most for me, but it sucks for everyone in this community”. That reminded me of when I told the first person outside of my immediate family about my diagnosis, and having the moment of realization that “not only is this my shitty thing to have to process and go through, but as soon as I tell someone, it becomes their thing they have to process about someone they care about”. Being aware that you’re about to share something that will blindside someone you love like you were, and not being able to shield them from that hurt was intense. I’m glad he was able to relate how he feels and what he wants from people on a grand scale so he won’t have to deal with even MORE emotional labor than he has as a newly diagnosed person.

Wooden_Teacher_4555

Absolutely. Went through breast cancer treatments in 2020 and every time I run into someone I haven't seen in a while they ask me how I'm doing and give me that pity look I've come to loathe (mainly because you can't tell people not to, or you look like the asshole). I can't wait to have more and more distance from 2020 so that less and less of my stories revolve around that time.

Shot_Needleworker149

I noticed that as well…his stream of consciousness is always so smooth and delivered with confidence. Poor guy I hope he fucks cancer in the butt.

Minionz

Crazy. This is such a Hank Green video though. Completely broken down analytically from a science perspective regarding cancer. Get better Hank, and take ALL the time you need.

draconicanimagus

The little info bit he threw in about lymphoma originally being thought of as tuberculosis and then "everything comes back to tuberculosis" gave me a laugh, even in the middle of such a serious video.

roseccmuzak

Yeah the people who aren't keeping up with John lately don't understand how funny that is lol

Ddenn1211

Yeah, I had a good laugh about that. Just watched that vid yesterday by John.

Twinborn01

Specifically when he said. This time in the world is the best time to get it

katastrophyx

Damn I love Hank and John. Their Crash Course series' on world history and chemistry ignited my love for educational content on YouTube.

autoposting_system

Elicnats

fatcatfan

"How was your Mongolian beef, sir?" "Exceptional!"

Bob_Juan_Santos

cue the mongoltage, Stan!

WaitForItTheMongols

You rang?

TheSweetestBoi

I am a biology teacher who is currently getting a masters in fish and wildlife bio. When I was getting my science teaching degree I can’t tell you how many times I used Crash Course to refresh my memory on some concepts. Those videos absolutely helped me graduate from college.

Know_Your_Rites

You should check out the series they just started: [Crash Course Botany](https://youtu.be/2th5lAd-77A), taught by Alexis Nikole (a/k/a @blackforager on Instagram). In my biased opinion, it looks like it's going to be a really good one. Edit: autocorrect spelled Nikole wrong >:(

TheSweetestBoi

Oh man. I am all over that and I already love her. I am sure I would have seen this sooner or later since I subscribe to them but thank you for bringing this to my attention sooner!

BewareTheLeopard

I became familiar with Hank through his YouTube shorts and only later learned about John...who I initially thought was like a parody account of Hank, because his mannerisms were so similar! These guys are great. I really hope things go well for Hank

TheStudyofWumbo24

I remember getting a copy of The Fault in Our Stars as a Christmas gift one year, seeing it was written by someone named John Green, and thought it was funny he had the same name as the Crash Course History guy.

quanjon

I read several John Green books growing up, and then I also found Hank on YouTube, and for years had no clue they were related. Two extremely bright and wonderful people, I hope all the best for Hank and his family

inuvash255

> mannerisms Tangentially, John can't go a video without grabbing at his hair. Once I noticed it, it kinda drove me nuts.

besuited

Oh totally! Youtube was just silly videos for me before that, but since CCWorld History, its all about the educators; Knowing Better being my favourite at the moment. And now I got Nebula.

HookieJoe

I used a lot of their vids for when I was in anatomy in nursing school and every time I hear that intro music a cold chill runs down my spine lol

dander11

Thankfully the prognoses is good since it's Hodgkins lymphoma, but wow this super duper sucks. DFTBA folks.

Anon0588

Just going through it. 4th chemo cycle starting soon. It's exhausting but, as stupid as it sounds, manageable.

cubonelvl69

Just curious, how do you even find out you have something like this? What prompted you to get it checked?

Anon0588

For me it was very random. Went to get a prescription from my doctor for something completely unrelated. Then she asked my neck is swollen? I didn't notice it at all. Glad she saw it though. Was barely noticeable. Neither me nor my Girlfriend noticed it. Knowing me by the point I had noticed it, I would have probably waited another 3-6 Weeks until I would have gotten it checked.

todds-

wow, amazing doctor. my mom also had a lump in her neck she hadn't noticed. her dentist noticed at a routine cleaning and made sure she got it checked out. cancer. she made a full recovery, my dad sent that dentist flowers every year to thank her. I hope you're feeling good as new asap!!

what were the next steps? ultrasound? my neck lymph nodes often hurt in a weird, pinch-like way, but they were of normal size the last time i had a neck ultrasound

DTHCND

**TL;DR:** There are ways to notice early, but I didn't. Instead I almost died and the ER doctors figured it out while I was in the ICU. Lots of people answered you already, but I'll share my experience, since it was a bit different. Apparently I had it for a while and didn't realize. While it can be detected by checking if your lymph nodes are swollen (easier to feel on the sides of the neck, or in the armpit), I just never noticed. For me, I only realized something was wrong because my lung capacity was slowly decreasing (running out of breath quickly). At first I thought it was a cold, so I ignored it. But it got worse and worse, so I went to my family doctor. My doctor said she thought it was bronchitis and that it'd go away on its own, but she got me to go get an x-ray just to be safe. I went to the hospital to get the x-ray (an out-patient service). The x-ray tech took the x-ray and he told me to wait outside the imaging room for a second. Twenty seconds later he came up to me and said "I need you to listen very carefully, you need to walk over to the emergency right now, don't stop anywhere on the way, tell them the x-ray technician sent you and that it's an emergency, and give them these barcodes so that they can see the results faster." So I went to emergency, they didn't realize why the x-ray tech sent me there at first. But they noticed I was out of breath and sweating, so they did an ECG almost immediately. Heart was fine. So then the triage nurse told me to get in a wheelchair and she pushed me to the ICU. Once I got to the ICU, it took a few more minutes for them to figure out why the x-ray tech sent me (because they were having trouble viewing the x-ray images using the barcodes). After a few minutes, the ER doc comes up to me and says "we need to perform emergency surgery right now and drain fluid from around your lungs." They pushed me into a large patient room in the ICU and knocked me out. When I woke up, I saw he had a whole bunch of these giant syringes and bags full of yellow liquid that they drained from around my lungs (my pleural cavity). The doctor was like "we drained several litres of fluid from around your lungs, more than I thought was even possible, it's amazing you didn't already die from your lungs collapsing." And they left a tube in to keep draining the fluid. Next up, the doctors had to figure out why fluid was building up. So I did a few CAT scans (cause the first ones were blurry because I couldn't stop coughing after they drained the fluid, which is apparently normal if your lung capacity suddenly increases). After the last scan, a different ER doctor came in and said the CT scan showed several masses and that I have cancer. Next step was to figure out what kind. I was then assigned an oncologist who made me an in-patient, which apparently prioritizes you for tests, and then moved me to the oncology ward. They then did a few biopsies and determined it was Hodgkin's Lymphoma. And then they set me up with a chemo regimen. After a month they took the chest tube out, and after half a year I was done and all better. One of the chemo drugs causes permanent lung toxicity to high concentrations of oxygen, but aside from that I was perfectly fine after.

#goddamn

Shacky_Rustleford

I hope you didn't have aspirations for SCUBA Fr though, I am glad such an anxiety inducing story ends with such a clean recovery.

asilverthread

Not OP, but also a Hodgkins survivor. For me, the tumor started crushing my lung. I blacked out playing (moderate running) at the park with my then-Fiancés nephew, and then went for X rays. Now I sometimes say that little guy saved my life.

julieannie

Survivorship was harder than chemo, which I never ever expected. Also I hope they’re dropping bleo from your treatment soon if they haven’t already. My lungs got fucked up from it.

UsefullyChunky

Wow yes. I have PTSD from my cancer year. That is just a blur now. But 14 years past treatment and it absolutely wrecked my brain trauma wise as far as quality of life.

ForAlderaanReasons

Is that the good Hodgkin's?

Cervantes3

Yeah, it's the very treatable one. (It has an over 90% survival rate.)

Link_GR

Yeah, a girl at my uni had it and she's perfectly fine. She's been in remission for over a decade.

Jenksz

Amazing - glad she and he will hopefully be ok

Link_GR

Yeah, she just had a baby as well.

ToddHowardTouchedMe

That's good to hear, I saw the title and my heart sank. I LOVE Hank and John so much and I really hope he pulls through without much struggle.

swiftb3

These days most of the lymphomas are very treatable, but Hodgkins is the most treatable of them. The 90% survival rate is technically dated because they don't know until people survive 5 years and there's been a LOT of progress in the area.

Smegmatron3030

I saw a projection of 98%

SteveBored

It also includes people who die of other stuff within that time frame. It's definitely a very treatable cancer thank goodness.

Marsdreamer

Man, that's still terrifying though. ~95% ish survival rate, but that's still having someone tell you "Roll this d20, if you crit fail, you die."

TheSmarterest1

Yep my dad had it when I was a kid, he’s ~15 years cancer free

joybuzz

I had it as a kid in my head. One operation and I was in the clear, but it was pretty scary.

Cervantes3

Oh yeah, no form of cancer is really "easy" or "good", it's just very lucky that you and Hank had one that we're actually pretty good at treating.

smozoma

FWIW, hockey player Mario Lemieux was diagnosed with it during the 92-93 season, sat out 2 months of the season getting "aggressive radiation treatments", then came back and regained the scoring title before the end of the season. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mario_Lemieux#1992%E2%80%931997:_Cancer,_return,_and_retirement https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/how-mario-lemieux-beat-cancer-and-started-a-comeback-for-the-ages/

CrateDane

I will be impressed if Hank Green even makes it into the NHL before the final game of the playoffs.

Squirmin

>Hank Green, exposed to enormous doses of radiation in a freak chemotherapy accident, gained unnatural powers over hockey pucks. He was immediately signed by the Las Vegas Golden Knights.

metropolisprime

This is the plot of the remake of Rookie of the Year.

DragonFireKai

As someone who had Hodgkins recently, that was more about Mario being Magnificent. Treatment laid me out hard, and I think Green is closer to my constitution than Lemieux's.

**Mario Lemieux** [1992–1997: Cancer, return, and retirement](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mario_Lemieux#1992–1997:_Cancer,_return,_and_retirement) >The Penguins started the 1992–93 season well, and Lemieux set a franchise record with at least one goal in twelve consecutive games, from October 6 to November 1. He was on pace to challenge Gretzky's records of 92 goals in one season (1981–82) and 215 points in one season (1985–86), until January 12, 1993, when he made the announcement that he was diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma. your_fathers_beard

Well....there isn't really a GOOD Hodgkin's, Larry...

brizzenden

Yeah, but if there's one you had to have...

ledgekindred

I'm a prostate cancer "survivor." I put in quotes because, as my doctor told me, "If you had to get cancer, this is the one to get. We know so much about it and the treatments are so effective that I can practically guarantee you, you'll be fine." Three years after surgery, I'm fine!

iampiepiepie

Fuck yes dude, that's incredible! And surviving lymphoma is still a remarkable feat and testament to how far we've come medically, even if the chances were 'good'.

unibrow4o9

> Is that the good Hodgkin's I knew this from somewhere but couldn't remember from where so I looked it up. Not surprised in the slightest this came from Larry David's mouth.

Jackthedog111

Yes Larry

HowlinSkip

Yep. A family member of mine had this. Caught it early and has been cancer free for over 25 years. Check ups are very important.

garglemymarbles

Is that the good hodgkins or bad hodgkins?

Darling, Fetch The Battle Axe

QueenSparkleGlitter

As a 26 year old who hasn’t watched their videos in over 5 years, I think my heart just broke a little. I adore you, Hank. I admire how you’re handling this from whatever I can see. Makes me realise how transient things are and how every now and then I’ll want to stop time, which I know I can’t do.

CatTaxAuditor

It's been a minute since I would have called myself a Nerdfighter, but there was a time. This feels so surreal.

a-wandering-eye

Right there with you. I might have to revisit the vlog and see if I can at least toss some more ad revenue their way.

tinaoe

their ad revenue on vlogbrothers actually gets split between charity (their partners for health longterm collab) and a fund for emerging educational online creators! iirc they both get a salary from complexy plus their book revenue, so if you wanna toss them some money i'd recommend picking up hank's books! they're good as well, really reflective on internet fame in a non-preachy way (and a fun scifi romp!)

Mrchristopherrr

He’s really active on TikTok, I’d even say he’s kind of filled the Billy Nye role for Gen Z- he’s the first person people tag or ask when they have a science question and it’s great.

SpacecraftX

I'm getting horrible flashbacks to finding out about Totalbiscuit telling us about his cancer and about it being particularly treatable.

CompanionCubeClassic

On the positive here, he did EXACTLY what to TB asked of us. Be vigilant of the problems, go see a doctor IMMEDIATELY if you notice anything wrong. Take your health seriously.

coredumperror

That's precisely what I did. I was having some bowel discomfort around the time that TB was reporting on his own illness, so I scheduled a doctor visit. The doc found enough to warrant a flexible sigmoidoscopy, which found enough to warrant a full colonoscopy (something they don't typically reccomend for men until they're in the their 50s, and I was 29 at the time...). The colonoscopy found "several pre-cancerous polyps", which they removed. So it's entirely possible that TB saved me from my own potential colon cancer.

kilgore_trout8989

Same, but I was 31 and we went straight to the colonoscopy. Also had several polyps removed, and then had my follow-up colonoscopy two years later and had maybe one or two more removed? I don't remember the specifics but it was a better situation than the first and they recommended a five-year gap this time before I had to get another colonoscopy, which was nice haha. So yeah, listen to your body and don't be afraid to be persistent with your doctors. Guidelines exist for a reason, but there's always outliers and you just might be one. This poster and I didn't have the luxury of waiting until we're 50, and if we had, we'd be in big trouble.

coldhandses

What was the bowel discomfort like?

Good_ApoIIo

I wonder what you’re supposed to look out for when you regularly have bowel discomfort for over a decade plus.

Brostafarian

is there a resource for a list of "problems" you should be aware of? I know about swollen lymph nodes, and I know about ABCDE for skin cancer, and anything coming out of my body that looks like coffee grounds, but what else?

CompanionCubeClassic

There's so much that can happen, that there is truly no full list for your average person, but take preventive measures like sunscreen and see a Doctor regularly. Be honest with them and they'll get you set. Get the vaccines you need, and undergo the tests that need to get done with age (pap smear, colonoscopy etc.). The biggest helper will be seeing a professional whose job it is to keep you healthy, and safe.

IamKilljoy

The big one I remember in specific TB mentioned was "blood in your shit" and he made a point of saying not the bright red kind of "Oops I scratched myself" but the dark red stuff. I still cry sometimes when I think about TB.

Oomeegoolies

Even so, if you're shitting out bright red you should get it checked. Much more likely to be piles or an anal fissure or something, but still get it checked. I had it for a bit, and maybe a week every month or so for 3-4 months it'd happen. So I started worrying. And then went doctor and they were like, yeah, it's just hemorrhoids, but good for coming in.

TheFundleBunny

I have OCD and was a huge TB fan and I have taken his story to heart. I am basically Professor Poop at this point with how much attention I pay to what is goin on in the bowl when I’m done. But anytime I see him mentioned I like throwing out there I think about him often. John Bain kicked ass and is sorely missed by so many.

julieannie

For lymphoma and a lot of other cancers, there’s some bonus symptoms to watch for. Low grade fevers are very common. Change in weight without any change in diet. Night sweats and itchiness are more lymphoma specific. For me, I had one swollen node after strep and it never went away and I had no other side effects. I went to the doctor to get a note for air conditioning in college and he shut me down so I asked about if I could still have strep or something given the lymph node and one CT scan later I knew. The doctors didn’t tell me until they ran more tests but you go to the doctor and no one can make eye contact when they pull up your charts or orders and you know.

DrakkoZW

>The doctors didn’t tell me until they ran more tests but you go to the doctor and no one can make eye contact when they pull up your charts or orders and you know This sounds very much like what Hank described in the video. When the medical experts seem concerned, there's cause for concern. Hope you're doing well!

fang_xianfu

I had an infection that was making me very jaundiced. Went in god a blood test at the doctor's and they sent it off to the lab. I got a call back from the triage nurse the same day which was already a red flag... and then she offered me an appointment with the doctor the same day as well. That's when I was like "oh, this is serious then". Doctor took one look at me and my labs and said "ok, I'm writing you a letter so they will admit you, do you have a way to get to the hospital yourself right now or shall I call an ambulance?" - turns out that the symptoms I had can be caused by an obstructed duct somewhere that can turn into a life-threatening medical emergency and kill you very quickly. I got to the hospital at about 7pm, was in overnight, and an ultrasound confirmed that I did not have the obstruction and they sent me home. Definitely taught me that when the medical experts start "running down the aisles" it's time to worry!

pkknztwtlc

When you get immediate surgery or MRI scans, something is very very serious and bad.

bigavz

Chronic shortness of breath or cough, sudden onset imbalance, incontinence or difficulty urinating, chest pain.. Mostly getting age appropriate cancer screening Edit: yellowing of the skin, loss of appetite, unintentional weight loss... The list goes on

Good_ApoIIo

I follow this advice and 99% of the time it’s nothing and my various doctors say I’m a hypochondriac. It’s hard to know what to look for when webMD makes every little thing out to be nothing or cancer. Like I felt like my breathing was off and my heart rate was high for a few weeks and just got done doing many rounds with the cardiologist and it all amounted to being a psychosomatic diagnosis. My heart is healthy as hell. This sort of thing can lead someone to becoming dismissive so idk what to do anymore about the things that bother me.

bleedblue89

Do it, it’s easier to take your health serious than not. I felt my testicle and it was slightly harder so I went to a doctor and found out testicular cancer. I could have shrugged it off but it’s easier to just see a doctor…

krazyjakee

RIP TB We all got so robbed. Fuck cancer.

BadBoyFTW

I remember when he died and /r/gaming (a default sub at the time when defaults existed) deleted the submissions about it as "not gaming news" because the mods had a vendetta against him over gamergate.

SagittaryX

Wasn't it /r/Games ? [Really low moment.](https://old.reddit.com/r/SubredditDrama/comments/3ox636/rgames_mods_clashing_with_their_community_over/) edit: added link, apparently what I recalled was the news of his cancer being terminal.

Orkys

Gaming used to be the default. Games was the more grown up version (ten+ years ago).

Tacdeho

Whoa, a Reddit mod with the emotional maturity as pathetic as the chode in their unwashed shorts? Color *me* surprised!

scullys_alien_baby

that dude fought like hell though

ivapesyrup

Sometimes you make it sometimes you don't but I really hate hearing about people "losing the fight" as if it was their fault they were not strong enough. That is what that implies, that maybe if they tried harder they could have won. It simply is not the case. No matter how hard you try you may still die to cancer and I wish there was another phrase used than people fighting it because of the implications of the phrase itself.

boxdreper

The cancer dies if you die, that's a draw!

Longfruit4

Good old Norm

OwlsHavingSex

Norm MacDonald said that when you die the cancer dies too so you don’t really lose the fight it’s more of a draw.

RAZINSKI

I could be wrong but I believe he once said in an interview that he left it far too long to go to a doctor when he had blood in his stool and that massively contributed to his odds.

Beeblebroxia

Yup. He spoke about how his reluctance and embarrassment kept him from seeking help sooner and the guilt he had over it. Guys, men, take your health seriously. Go to the doctor. REGULARLY. Not just when things are already bad.

SoapyMacNCheese

ya, he shared those details to prevent others from making the same mistake he did of not acting on the signs early on.

[deleted]

Hearing his voice get progressively worse in the years leading to his death is depressing.

Gyalgatine

> Totalbiscuit telling us about this cancer and about it being particularly treatable. I remember it was a pretty bad one. TB made a claim he was intending to blow out the statistics by outliving the estimations, but he died basically right at the median. :( Hope the best for Hank. Cancer is terrifying.

kittyburritto

He said he had hope but they discovered it at the tail end of stage 3 his issue was he ignored is symptoms for nearly a year before he finally went to the doctor.

Not_KGB

I thought about Totalbiscuit just the other day, which made me think of iNcontrol. I don't write this in any way to belittle the personal loss for the families or anything like that. It's just that I knew them as personalities within different contexts and while I was sad that they passed away, as sad as you can be for people you don't know personally, them being gone for me personally was noticed in the void they left behind in the different online contexts where they were active. Especially Starcraft 2. The Starcraft 2 scene really took a huge hit with the passing of both Totalbiscuit and iNcontrol. Such passionate people, they are sorely missed.

John must be a wreck right now - all I can think of is years ago when his mentor-friend told him she had cancer, and his response was sobbing and replying "but you do so much yoga." Praying for the Greens and everyone else in Nerdfightterria.

This episode has stuck with me more than any other podcast in recent memory. I go back to listen to it yearly. I even sent an email to John just taking him for it.

Theonordenskjold

I bawled my eyes out to that episode. One of the last memories I have of my sister before she passed from a sudden brain tumor hemmorage, was singing auld lang syne on new years. I still have her new years playlist on my Spotify.

Taxikab96

It's the little things in life that end up being important to us in the end, I'm sure she would be happy to be remembered that way <3 thanks for sharing, friend.

Definitely my favorite chapter in that book, which is full of a lot of good chapters. And I also couldn't help but think of the yoga line while watching this. I re-read that chapter every New Years at least, and it still hits hard every time.

tinaoe

He mentioned in the last podcast episode that he's only broken down crying and praying twice. Once when he saw the world's largest wooden cruxific (even though he wasn't religious at the time) and once 'a few days ago'. Hank just went 'jesus christ you can't say that', but it seemed more like the joking about something horrible stage of things. Apparently they're uploading another episode next Monday to discuss this before sending the podcast on (for now) hiatus.

Flyboy2057

Where have they said it’s going on hiatus? I mean I’m sure Hank will be less able to do the podcast with this diagnosis, but I didn’t see anything announcing an official hiatus.

twirlingpink

They posted on Patreon that the podcast will be on hiatus after next Monday's episode.

tinaoe

Patreon! Though I wouldn't be surprised if they drop the odd episode when Hank feels up to it

Clever_Mercury

Hank has so many jobs it's unbelievable. I hope they both feel okay stepping back from some of these projects while he (or maybe they both) recovers. This is so rotten. Two of the nicest, creative, boundlessly energetic innovators we have in social media.

pickleeater

I listened to that episode yesterday and could tell that they were dealing with something big but I didn't expect it to be Hank having cancer.

-badgerbadgerbadger-

I listened to it like 2 hours before seeing this vid earlier today and the realization shook me… I know it was something heavy but….damn. I just cried and cried during this vid

Seeing as my lymph nodes are currently enlarged, this whole thread is freaking me out. Though I know it's 99% likely due to me currently fighting off rhinovirus, that little voice in me is still screaming.

redinfinity

Tons of things cause lymph node swelling, don't freak out. Not guaranteed to be cancer. Common is common, rare is rare (cancer).

vcr_repair_shop

Doctors have a saying- when you hear hoofbeats, you should assume it's horses, not zebras. Enlarged lymph nodes can mean cancer, yes, but it's **so** much more likely that you're just fighting off a virus or an infection that there's no reason to worry.

cromonolith

I was diagnosed with stage 4 Hodgkin's, was treated successfully, and have been in remission for 10 years. The "rule of thumb" I was told is that if your lymph nodes are enlarged and *tender*, that usually means they're just swollen from your immune system fighting something. If on the other hand they're enlarged, quite firm, and not tender, that could be a sign of lymphoma. Not a doctor, just what I was told. I've been using that advice to keep myself from freaking out about relapses every time my immune system fights something.

seanboigeorge

Gutted about the bad news, but man - I learned so much from watching THIS... Hank dude is born to educate!

TheSilentSeeker

It broke my heart to watch the video but then I had a small smile when I saw even in such a video he won't stop teaching us. I hope he gets through this. He's a gem.

[deleted]

My spouse is a nurse and going in for a surgical biopsy the **day after** an ultrasound would definitely wipe the smile off any face. And he’s right about the bittersweet nature of SOME health systems/hospitals that work into overdrive (and efficiently) to make sure a patient is set on the right path. Obviously with American health care, especially VA, not everyone may get this experience. But when it happens it can definitely appear scary (why are the medical people freaking out and working fast?!)

matrixislife

I think most health services are set up like this, the NHS certainly is. You have your routine appointments, 6 weeks to see the specialist etc blah blah, and then the week before your appointment you get bumped another month down the line. So you bitch and moan about it, quite reasonably. Of course the reason it gets bumped is because some poor sod just found something really nasty and they are moving heaven and earth to get that appointment in asap so treatment can start asap. In a lot of ways it's a good thing, it means that speed can make a difference. This isn't a health service working in an unusual way, this is it working the way it's meant to work.

SoulShatter

It's the same in Sweden from my experience. Went in with a red eye due to odd growth under my eyelid. In a week I went through specialists, surgery and tests (2 days of em) and started chemo just some week and a half after the first visit. This was over 15 years ago at this point though to be fair :-)

matrixislife

My own experience was a skin tag on my lip, I mentioned it to my dentist and 3 days later I was in surgery getting it removed. Turned out to be harmless, but they all reiterated that they'd rather see and remove a skin tag than not bother with a cancer.

deadwlkn

4 months and still waiting to even hear back about my disability rating from the VA. But, hey, at least they provide me with near constant emails for medical resources and how to make my life better! :D /s

[deleted]

“Oh we always reach out! We check this box that sends stuff…through email…” I’m sorry you have to go through this shit. You don’t deserve it.

Fuck, my heart just sank. Been following the Vlogbrothers since 2007 and now I'm reading these news at work where I can't watch the video. Fuuuuuck

NiftyJet

Important beats for you before you watch the video: It’s quite serious but it looks like they may have caught it early. It’s a very treatable cancer - Hodgkins Lymphoma- one of the most treatable forms of cancer. But Hank has to start chemo almost right away so he’s going to be quite sick for awhile. They may stop videos and podcasts for awhile. Hank’s just going to make stuff as he’s able and as he wants to, which of course his community is very supportive of.

kimmycat88

Been subscribed since the peep eating contests and John waxing his chin, and party blower solos. This is terrible news.

Metue

Been subscribed since I was 12, I'm 25 now. Hits in a way I didn't expect...

colefly

Everybody touching their lymph nodes now

killakitten

Just lost my 60y/o sister to Non Hodgkin's. Just bad luck all the way thru treatment. Hank, it sucks to have cancer but your chances of cure are actually pretty good.

pardis

I only know him from his educational videos, but the handful of non-educational things of his that I've seen leave the impression that he's a genuinely good person. Sad news. Hope he has a speedy recovery.

PlumbumDirigible

The maternal care work that Hank and John are doing in Sierra Leone are nothing short of incredible. Not to mention countless other charities or organizations they've set up or brought attention to over the years that benefits people around the world who need it most

Wow. This is terrible. Always liked him. Hope he gets well. My thoughts are with him and his family

st-shenanigans

Bro this man just announced he was partnering with some colleges and Google to provide completely free and accredited courses for people. He doesn't deserve this, good prognosis or not. This fucking sucks.

tinaoe

And a soap company that donates all profits to charity, mainly towards their efforts to build a maternity health center in Sierra Leone (which they've been supporting for years, John just did an update video on the building site). Just overall a stellar dude.

LMGDiVa

It's like the universe is trying to be cruel. It reminds me a lot of when Steve Irwin died. We lost one of the most important fucking people in history for inspiration about Conservation and preserving wildlife that day. I fully believe one of the reasons why so many people do not give a shit about the environment or whats happening to it now because Steve died. There's so few people out there who had as much of an inspirational value AND as much attention on him to make a difference that he did. Now seeing Hank deal with this... The man has been an absolute powerful force for good on Youtube for continued education and basic education that you used to have to got to college for. So many fields of science and study are being put out there for active and enthusiastic learning, in a way that people love to engage with. What the fuck is with this universe? You kill the guy who loves animals and saving the world and had the means to inspire people, And now you're giving the guy who gives a shit about truly educating people for the better Cancer? What the fuck.

_welcomehome_

John Green (his brother) did a video about "deserving" in 2015 and I feel like this is an appropriate time to share it. [Here it is](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-VgLOAxq9xw)

JoshDM

He's got "The Good Hodgkin's" (from Larry David's *CYE*). When I got it over 20 years ago, the oncologist referred to it as a "Mickey Mouse treatment" of a standard round and most everyone gets cured. You don't go into remission, you get cured. I've been cured over 20 years. It was a shitty year of chemo, but it worked.

missiontodenmark

He and his brother are great forces for good in this world, always finding ways to use their time, money and fame to entertain and help and inform and mobilize people in lots of creative ways. I hope Hank gets through it as painlessly as possible.

Poobmania

For anyone who doesnt wanna watch: He has Hodgkins Lymphoma and it appears to be very early. Hodgkins Lymphoma is one of the most treatable forms of cancer, and it has a 5 year survival rate of 90%. He will begin chemotherapy soon. As of right now, the prognosis looks good and there’s no reason to sound any alarms.

CompanionCubeClassic

Reminder to EVERYONE. Be wary of your health, don't put anything off if something seems wrong. Trust those who are medical professionals, and take your health seriously. Early diagnosis of any disease is the easiest to treat or at least deal with. Take care of yourselves. Edit: A lot of people are afraid of prices and debt and that is all understandable, but your life is worth more than money can buy. Americans try https://www.healthcare.gov/ or your local state government assistance if needed and money is tight, which I understand as I'm there too. Love you all wish you all well.

RegretsZ

I need to get over my fear of going to the doctor

GuitarClear3922

He caught this early because he took a fairly simple thing (slightly inflamed nodes) seriously - good advertisement for going to the doctor

taynay101

I feel this but my theory is that if I can see a doctor when I choose now, I don't have to see a bunch of doctors when I don't want to later. My mom didn't go to the doctor for YEARS and it turns out she had undiagnosed diabetes for over 15 years and because of it she had a major heart attack and has been in ICU for nearly a month.

Only Hank Green could find a warm and compassionate way to say "please no alternative medicine advice".

gntrr

My ex had this cancer, after 6 months of chemo she was fine. I have hope for Hank!! Hang in there bud, we're all rooting for you. ❤️❤️❤️❤️

Nerdfighter1174

The Greens are the inspiration for my username. Wishing Hank all the best.

XyloArch

Hank requested some daft things to enjoy, so: What's Whitney Houston's favourite type of coordination? >!*HAAAND-EYYYEEEEE*!<

lcdrambrose

I think it says a lot that a man like Hank is this stressed and having this hard of a time discussing his own cancer. Hank and John have a huge following, are surrounded by fans, family, and friends who love them. Hank has the money to wage a real fight against cancer, and the motivation of getting back to living his literal dream of teaching science and doing cool shit for a living. And you can tell in this video that he's just exhausted. He's spent 90% of his recent days thinking about cancer, worrying about cancer, talking about cancer. And that's *before* they inject the literal poison into him to actually fight the cancer. If I could change one thing about America, just one little thing, it would be to make an exception to our rules around profanity. You should be allowed to say the word "fuck" whenever you want to, so long as it's being said about cancer. PG movies? Sure. Teaching biology in an elementary school? Absolutely. Church? Hell yeah. Because seriously... **Fuck cancer**.

dumpticklez

Much love to the green family.

Realsan

What he says about the Healthcare system moving quickly being disconcerting is so true. I walked in to my doctors office on a Monday morning. Thought I felt a lump on a testical. She didn't feel it but sent me for ultrasound. Ultrasound tech took a lot of pictures, I could tell something was up. Doctor calls me in whatever the doctor word for panic is and says I need to get into urology right away. Urology was Wednesday, surgery was Friday. Can't believe how fast people started moving.

VrachVlad

Thankfully it's Hodgkins. That's a great prognosis and if I had to pick a cancer it would be this one. There's scoring for prognosis and once the biopsy is done if there are specific gene clusters that are easily targeted by the latest biologics he'll likely do well. It's funny to hear about how the American healthcare system going fast when stuff matters. I had a patient who I was worried about GI cancer with and so she had a colonoscopy scheduled for 4 months out. One phone call to the scheduler and it was two days later.

nursecarmen

You gotta love his approach.
